Essential Students Danielle DeStaso

By Jeff Finkle

Lauren Schlanger

Softball Pitcher

Lauren Schlanger is a strong young woman both mentally and physically. She is a freshman athlete on the track team at the University of Vermont and competes in throwing events like the discus and the shot put. She graduated last year from Clarkstown South and in her first year at Vermont she was nominated for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, as well as making the Dean’s List for the College of Education and Social Services. She started her track career in ninth grade and made her way from a sprinter Lauren Schlanger - Rockland discus thrower to the throwing events. The throwing events at University of Vermont might appear to be simple feats of strength, but there’s a reason they have been an acclaimed Olympic sport since the days of the ancient Greeks. “The sport is about strength and technique. Without the two, you cannot perform to the best of your ability,” said Lauren. As a thrower, she has to make sure to not lean too much out of the back of the circle, and to keep her core tight. Throwers also have to be quick, because the faster they spin, the farther the discus goes. “Compared to the runners on the team, throwing is much more of a mental sport,” said Lauren. In a competition she has three attempts to get her best mark, so a lot of the time she will be complimenting how to tweak her action for the next throw, while a runner just runs the race without a second chance. With Lauren’s enthusiasm and drive to succeed in the classroom and the track, I think she won’t need too many second chances to achieve her goals.

Clarkstown Youth Court

The Clarkstown Youth Court program has been in effect since 1981 and is one of the oldest peer courts in the tri-state area. Juveniles are tried, judged, defended, and convicted or exonerated by a court compromised of other teenagers. The Court has guidelines established by adults and the kids in Youth Court go through a ten-week training program. Adults are always available for advice but the youths who are selected to serve on the Court make the final decisions. Youth Court gives teens a chance to take pride in performing jobs in which their actions can affect the lives of their fellow teens and they take it very seriously. Youth Court teaches teenagers a level of responsibility that is beyond that of typical extra-curricular activities. Det. Eileen Malloy oversees the Youth Court and loves watching the teens enrolled in the program “just blossom” over the years. Teenagers between the ages of 13-19 can fill out an application with two recommendations to apply to be in Youth Court. They can be judges, prosecutors, bailiffs and start out as assistants to the defense attorneys or the prosecutors. All the defendants are under 16 years of age and the cases are all petty larcenies, mostly cases of pit-pocketing. The children who go before the Youth Court are “used to having grownups telling them they have done something wrong,” said Det. Malloy. They understand the consequences of their actions easier when it’s their peers explaining it

to them. It also gives them a chance to avoid Family Court for a minor offense, which isn’t as child friendly. “Most of the kids that go before the Court are just like any other teenagers, they have just made a foolish mistake,” said Det. Malloy. For the teenagers who are enrolled in Youth Court, it is a maturation process for them. They learn real life responsibility and get over any early nervousness to perform their duties and begin to yearn to do things as a member of the court that adults might find uncomfortable, like explaining to the parents the process that their children are going through, which is something that really impresses Det. Malloy. Most of the teens that serve in Youth Court are from the upper middle class area of Clarkstown and get an early life lesson that they might take things for granted that the kids they deal with in other towns might not. “Some kids were shocked to learn that other teens’ families might not have a car to take them to community service,” said Det. Malloy. The teens that go before Youth Court are mostly just kids acting out for attention or caught up in peer pressure. A few teens that have served community service after being judged by their peers in Youth Court have gone on to become members of the Court themselves. Youth Court provides an opportunity to learn and grow not only for the lawyers and judge but the defendants as well.

Danielle DeStaso is a two-sport senior athlete at North Rockland High School. Although she was the Player of the Year for her team’s league in basketball, she will be taking her pitching talents to Seton Hall, as she has earned a softball scholarship there. While basketball might have come more naturally to Danielle as she used her strength and size to score 1,000 points in high school, she has put in years of practice to make herself a dominant pitcher on the softball diamond. Along with being on the high school team, she has played in softball travel teams which provided Danielle DeStaso was nominated for the Outstanding Athlete Page by the competition from the most dedicated athletes in New York and New Jersey. Clarkstown North Athletics Director, Tess Brogan Danielle also does winter softball workouts and has a private pitching coach who has been guiding her since she started pitching years ago. Danielle can throw a softball up to speeds of 62 mph which is the baseball equivalent of 92 mph, but she is not just a flame thrower, she has an arsenal of six pitches, including a drop pitch, curveball and a screwball. What Danielle likes about pitching is that the pitcher needs to have a “good head” and maintain the ability to shake off mistakes like homeruns to get the next batter out. Danielle has thrown no-hitters and contributed to a combined perfect game on a travel team. She once jumped over a catcher to score the winning run at home plate, which is a perfect example of the enthusiasm she has for the sport.

Essential Women of Rockland

By Jeff Finkle

Women of Rockland County who are making a difference in their communities

Jackie Guy

Carolyn Fish Carolyn Fish has been a Rockland County resident for over 40 years and the Executive Director of the Rockland Family Shelter since 1978. “In the 1970’s, there really were no services to help battered women,” said Ms. Fish. This motivated Ms. Fish and other community activists at the time to form a coalition that grew “with the help of an array of successful people in Rockland County to become the Family Shelter,” she said. Carolyn Fish has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally for her ongoing work to realize the RFS mission; which is to “create a society in which all individuals can live with dignity and equality, free from fear, violence and oppression.” Ms. Fish is extremely proud of the difference that the Rockland Family Shelter has made in the lives of thousands of people over the years, as everyone is affected by abuse, not just women. Many women have told her over the years that the shelter has saved their families and she considers that to be a “treasure that she holds dear.” The Rockland Family Shelter offers support groups, emergency shelter for people, a 24-hour crisis hotline and various other services geared to aiding victims of abuse. Ms. Fish has based her life around breaking the cycle of abuse in families and she is especially proud of the Shelter’s “Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program,” for preventing future violence in adults by reaching them as teenagers. Carolyn Fish is not just a feminist, but a wife, a mother and a grandmother and she has dedicated her life to stop the abuse in families.

Jackie Guy has been teaching the children of Rockland County tennis since 1988. She is currently the director of Pee Wee Tennis, which is located in the Lifeplex tennis complex in Monsey. Jackie’s devotion to teaching youths the sport has earned her the prestigious “2009 Tennis Woman of the Year” award by the USTA. Jackie’s foray into the world of tennis began in the 1980s. Jackie lives in West Nyack with her husband but was born in France. On one of her trips back to Paris she wondered into a tennis shop and realized that the French were using smaller 19” racquets. She noticed that the Wilson was selling scaled down racquets there for children and recommended it to the USTA. Wilson then presented her with 19’’ and 17’’ racquets to use for her program. Jackie Guy’s tennis program enables kids to learn the sport at their own pace so that they grow to love tennis, as opposed to what was done in the past. Children would use adult size racquets and hit adult size balls at the net, as opposed to other sports, like basketball where kids started off with a smaller ball. She teaches kids to love the sport and the kids that do end up becoming tennis pros with her and they learn from her how to instruct younger kids. “I want young children to enjoy tennis so much that they will come back and continue to play as they become older,” said Ms. Guy. In recent years, the USTA has spent millions to attract kids ten and under to compete in tournaments. Jackie Guy teaches kids the proper technique and a few might end up playing on the tour, but for her, that’s not what it’s about. The kids that learn from Jackie end up loving the sport and that’s why she loves teaching them. She has devoted much of her life to teaching the sport of tennis in a way that they will stick with the sport and don’t give it up as they get older. She has run all the after-school tennis programs for the Clarkstown schools and has built a legacy there. Jackie got involved with free programs to build the thirst for the sport with kids who can’t afford lessons, in cooperation with the Girl Scouts and the LifePlex Health Facility and the Westrock Tennis Club. She also donated her time for seven years to provide tennis lessons for kids at a camp for disadvantaged kids. Jackie Guy won the USTA Volunteer of the Year Award for the Eastern Region in 2011 for all the work she has done to bring enjoyment of tennis to area kids and has become a Rockland County pied piper; leading children to a lifetime of tennis fun and exercise.

Kathleen Troy Maier Kathleen Troy Maier is a marketing consultant for a renewable energy company who always has the energy to spend her free time doing volunteer work to help organizations like Joseph Home and Loeb House succeed in their mission to provide housing for formerly homeless people in Rockland County. She is currently working on a “Homes for Heroes” project that she is especially proud of which is going to build a housing unit for disabled veterans at Camp Shanks in Orangeburg, which used to be a processing center during WWII. Senator Charles Schumer is a supporter of the project and helped get funding for the project which will break ground on June 5th, a day before the anniversary of D-Day. The “Homes for Heroes” housing complex will be a 52 unit complex to home disabled and homeless veterans and it is a “perfect fit for what that area was,” said Ms. Maier. There had been some community opposition on to the complex which befuddled Kathleen who compares being against it to “being against a rainbow.” Ms. Maier also works with Camp Venture which is dedicated to providing acceptance to mentally ill patients. She got into fundraising as a teen doing face painting at fund raising events and she continues to help people have fun at fundraising events by painting butterflies on people’s faces, including her two young children.

Strength is shown in many ways. Ashley May is a 15 year old, second degree NY state champion black belt in Muay Thai karate and has spent most of her life honing her physical and mental strength through martial arts. She also has a more important strength, which is the strength to stand up for what is right and the strength to endure. She has witnessed and endured bullying in her high school by a group of insecure boys and girls who join together under a sort of mob mentality to put down one student with the intent of breaking this person emotionally. In the age of Facebook and immediate information, students are able to post rapid nasty comments about an individual which can be difficult to ignore for a teenager. In Ashley’s case, she stood up for a boy who was being cornered and teased by a group of twenty students, who then turned their focus on her. Ashley, being the strong person she is, has not only endured the bullying but has gone out of her way to help other teens who have endured bullying. She has become the national teen spokesperson for an anti-bullying organization called Gurlfyturz.com which is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to fighting domestic abuse and empowering women with strength and self confidence. Gurl Fytrz tries to get women who are battered or have been emotionally scarred to use martial arts as a way of building back their damaged self confidence. “The first thing you learn in karate is to be respectful of others,” said Ashley, when describing why she had a hard time sitting back and watching a group of kids verbally bully a boy. Ashley has seen the abuse of domestic violence first hand, as her mother has been the victim of domestic violence, and that helped frame her strength to want to prevent other women from getting stuck in the downward spiral of abuse. Ashley posts videos and blog posts on the gurlfyrtz site for teens living in abusive households to see that they are not alone and that they can break free from the abuse. “My mom has been my role model, with the courage she uses to defend my sisters and I. She’s so strong and she passed that strength on to me,” Ashley wrote on the site. Ashley is very passionate about Muay Thai karate and when she’s not practicing, will instruct younger kids. Although Ashley May can punch through wood, it doesn’t take that kind of strength to defeat this new wave of teen bullying in our schools. All it takes is for the schools to catch up to the technology and to toughen their penalties for mental abuse and most importantly for parents and other teenagers who see what’s going on to stand up and call the bullies out as individuals. All it took was one little girl in “To Kill a Mockingbird” to point out that no one wants to be in a mob of one.

Anne Marie Gaudio has always loved dogs and when she found a puppy 17 years ago and the police got her in touch with the Humane Society, she ended up adopting the dog but falling in love with the work of the Humane Society. She spends thirty hours a week providing marketing consulting for the Hudson Valley Humane Society which is made up of volunteers like her who are devoted to promoting the cause of animal welfare. She has a marketing consultant firm that specializes in consulting for professional sports firms such as World Team Tennis and helped get the Sportime tennis complex built on Randall’s Island. Anne Marie Gaudio is excited about the two new adoption centers the Hudson Valley Humane Society is building. They are converting a Revolutionary War era barn into a low cost spay and neuter clinic. In one of the adoption centers, a pet food pantry was put in place six months ago in which people can come every Saturday and pick up a two-week supply of dog food that is donated by companies like Petco and PetSmart. In a time where people need to cut back on expenses and the unemployment rate is so high, this program is a great idea to allow some people to keep their dogs who might have not have been able to afford to. Anne Marie Gaudio has always been passionate about sports and feels that the “unconditional love of pets provide their owners with the same heartwarming escape from the stresses of life.” Her marketing consulting firm is called Roxy Blues, which she named after her basset hound.

Denise Serra Denise Serra is a Nanuet resident and a breast cancer survivor of nine years who has gotten her family, friends and neighbors involved with raising money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Last year, Denise and her husband came up with the idea to do a tractor pull as a fun event the community could participate in to raise money. They went to neighbors, the police and fire department and local schools to get people to form groups of ten to compete in the fire truck pull. The fire truck pull was held outside the Visions Sports Club in Pearl River where Denise works. An antique fire truck was used as teams competed to see who could pull it the farthest. The various teams raised over $9,000. Three years ago, Denise found out a cute way to get people involved to raise money for the Avon Walk after talking to a friend in NJ who gave her the idea to use pink flamingos. For the past three years Denise has been placing pink flamingos at night on people’s lawns in town with a flier attached. The note tells people they can have the flamingo removed for a $5 donation and for another $5 donation a “pink flamingo trainer” will remove it from the yard. For an additional $5, people can buy “pink flamingo insurance,” she said. People really enjoy when the flamingos show up. The first year she did the flamingos she raised over $11,000. Denise and her husband are like Santa Clause, except instead of dropping off gifts, the people who receive the flamingos get a chance to give and most people gave generously.

Sandra Szpicek-Leylegian Sandra Szpicek-Leylegian was brought up in a family that always gave back to the community. She owns a jewelry and gift store called “The Things I Love” in New City and for the past few years she has been holding two fund raising events a year at the store that have wine, cheese and music for the attendees. She donates 20% of the purchase price of items in the store to an organization she cares deeply about like the Rockland Family Shelter and the United Hospice of Rockland. A raffle is held during the event and all the raffle money is donated to the organization that the fundraiser is for. Sandra is an alumnus of Spring Valley High and a lot of students come into her store and buy expensive jewelry to wear to the prom which gave her the idea to donate crystal jewelry every year to ten deserving girls that are chosen by a prom coordinator from Spring Valley who can’t afford to buy the jewelry on their own. “The girls get to keep the jewelry after the prom and it gives them a chance to feel fancy and special,” said Sandra. Sandra Szpicek-Leylegian has a sister who used to work at an orphanage in Basseterre, St. Kitts that did not have public funding. Two years ago, Sandra and her sister Dr. Debra Smatt came up with the idea to give care packages of basic necessities to the girls at the orphanage like hair brushes and toiletries and other things they don’t have and what kids in Rockland County would take for granted. They use the store to help pay for care packages by using the proceeds of a specific glass jewelry that is sold at the store. Out of all the items that the girls get, “what really meant the most to them were framed photos of themselves,” said Ms. Szpicek-Leylegian. Most of these girls had never seen themselves in photographs and to be able to deliver this feeling of self realization to them is definitely one of the things that Sandra Szpicek-Leylegian loves.

Beth Blecker Beth Blecker is the President of the Rockland Business Women’s Network (RBWN) and joined its board in 1995. She is proud of the support system that RBWN has created for women in the county. “Women helping women is an amazing commodity,” she said. She is also on the board of “People to People,” which is Rockland County’s largest food bank. Ms. Blecker is proud of a program “People to People” has created called “Project Joy” which gives people in the community a chance to help families down on their luck fulfill their children’s “wish list” for presents during the holiday season. Another program she is involved with is called “Back to School with Dignity”. Through this program, people and local businesses donate school supplies so children of Rockland’s struggling families have a successful school year like any other kids. “Feeding people is wonderful enough but keeping kids in school will help break the chain of poverty,” she said. Ms. Blecker lives in Nanuet and has a financial planning company in Pearl River that helps retired-minded people achieve their goals of financial independence. Her company motto is “Plan with confidence. Enjoy Life” and Beth Blecker finds joy in helping others do just that.

Realizing her passion for fine art in high school, Tammy began studying jewelry and light metals at the prestigious fine art college, Rhode Island School of Design.

Vedetta Hanley Vedetta Hanley is the Executive Director of the Community Action Partnership, which is an organization dedicated to helping families break the poverty cycle. The Community Action Program is a multi-purpose agency that puts together many different programs, such as food pantries in their locations in Spring Valley and Haverstraw that provide hot meals for families five days a week. “In this economy, families who have not suffered economic hardships in the past, are coming in for family services,” she said. Ms. Hanley takes great pride in the programs that she is involved with that aid children in succeeding in school and having their confidence built to want to achieve in life.“Watching children develop in the youth programs is a very rewarding task,” said Ms. Hanley. She felt blessed when a woman told her that her child who was helped by the youth program’s tutors who had gone on to college and became a lawyer. There is a language barrier in Rockland County based on the various ethnicities that make up its demographic and the Community Action Program “has tutorial programs that can work with kids who speak all languages, as well as new math,” she said. Ms. Hanley will take the time to personally give students who need extra help learning plans to get them back on track. As gratifying as the immediacy of the food bank is to Vedetta Hanley, giving parents the tools to work with their children on their own and guide them towards a brighter future is what really drives her and the entire Community Action Project that she represents so well.

Gina Bertollino Gina Bertolino, owner of Mystic Images Salon, celebrates in 2011 the 20th anniversary in its current location at 75A Lafayette Avenue in Suffern, NY. Today, Mystic Images offers a full line of beauty services for the entire family, and features a retail area in which Gina sells hair care products, body essentials, clothing and jewelry. Her professionalism, creativity and caring go beyond business to give back to the community. This October 2nd, Mystic Images will take the lead to celebrate breast cancer survivors with the “3rd Annual Mystic Makeover Fashion Show for Breast Cancer Awareness”.

Laura Sarter has devoted a good portion of her life to ensuring that other people will have the opportunity to extend theirs. She recently retired from 33 years of service as an assistant director with the MIS Dept. of Rockland County but it is her work with blood drives that has sustained her passion to give back to the community. In 2002, she received the Laura Blanchfield award from NY Blood Center for commitment to volunteer blood donor campaign. The county hosts between 4-6 blood drives every year and Ms. Sarter would try and incorporate fun raffles with each drive. Ms. Sarter would get into the holiday spirit in December and dress up like “Ms. Clause” to encourage participation in blood drives. Laura Sarter became so synonymous with blood drives in Rockland County; her friends began calling her “Vampira.” Ms. Sarter has motivated her friends to give blood and urges people to donate blood during the month of May in honor and memory of moms everywhere. “Truly the best gift ever,” she said. Laura Sarter has donated over 55 pints of blood in her life and considers herself to be a “late bloomer” and even though she has passed on the organizing torch, she still continues to donate. If you want to enable others to bloom, you can contact the Hudson Valley Blood Services. Donating blood is giving the gift of life, “which is still the one product we have not yet invented a replacement for”, she said.

The Detail Work: In mediation, we also have the advantage of thoughtful time and the experience of a facilitator who has heard every problem and dealt with thousands of solutions… we are not a “one size fits all” firm. We think ahead to many problems that could be generated in the future and deal with them now, so that the parties never have to fight. The Legacy: The grace of having dealt with a difficult situation in a decent and kindly manner transforms the entire family. The children are better for it. The parents are better for it. It creates a legacy of civility and compassion where otherwise there might be adversity and war.

The

Distribution of Assets and Debt: When a couple is in Court to accomplish a divorce, the Judge does his or her best to equitably and evenly split the assets, the presumption being that everything accrued from the date of the marriage forward, whether asset or debt, is shared. The Judge does not know either party, does not get to hear what their emotions or psychological needs are, but rather needs to “do the numbers and get out.” In mediation, it is personal and it is boutique. It is also ALWAYS cheaper. We sit together and all “hear” each party’s “needs” and “comfort level”. One party will give up something that is not that important to him or her in order to get something else that is. The key is understanding what the Court would do and then finding a creative solution that the Court would not.

Custody and Parenting Schedules: In mediation, we have the advantage of focused time without threats and an atmosphere of civility that allows us to come up with options and permutations for customizing and personalizing to the needs of the children and each party a way in which to deal with the children’s lives in all aspects.

From years of working out in, and working in various gyms, I can’t tell you how many times I see the same scenario: the poor uninformed female flailing away with the pink 3 lb. dumbbells in hopes that her body is mysteriously going to turn into Giselle. Having trained a vast array of clients everywhere from Division I athletes to extremely obese clients, with about 70% of them being women, the one thing I’ve learned is that strength training with 70-85% of your one rep maximum is not only beneficial, but necessary for the female species. Most females have a way lower strength to body weight ratio than males. Females also put on more lower body fat as they mature than males, not to mention their high-risk of osteoporosis as they get older. All of our female clients here at Rockland peak performance receive full body strength workouts, accompanied by 5 to 15 min. of metabolic work to finish off their program. And it’s not a coincidence that they all not only get leaner, but also move better. So why don’t more women strength train with weights? The answer lies in numerous myths created by society over the years. Here are a few: Myth: women should lift light weights for high reps in order to slim down and not get bulky. Fact: muscle bulk comes from a high volume of work. High-volume results in muscle damage, which in turn results in hypertrophy. More weight/ less reps contrary to popular belief, is better for losing body fat, and increasing muscle tone. Myth: women who lift heavier weights will get bulky. Fact: women do not have nearly as much testosterone, a muscle building hormone as men. As a matter of fact, women have 15 to 20 times lower testosterone levels than men. This myth is built upon the chemically altered women that we see on the front of bodybuilding magazines. Myth: doing steady-state cardio will make you skinny. Fact: doing lots of steady-state cardio work might make some people skinny, but it will also make you flabby and eventually injured. Steady-state cardio eats away at muscle mass eventually slowing down your metabolism, resulting in less calories burned per activity. None of my clients have ever come up to me with a picture of a marathon runner and said, “I want my body to look like this”.. However, look at the body on the sprinter low body fat and extreme muscle tone. But I don’t want to turn this into a “why you shouldn’t do steady-state cardio” article. So here are my top reasons why women should strength train with weights: 1. Reduce your risk of injury: weight training strengthens not only muscles but connective tissues and promotes joint stability. If your strength is increased, daily tasks and routines will be far less likely to cause injury. 2. Lower percentage of body fat: increasing muscle mass turns the body into a fat burning machine. Each pound of muscle you gain, burns up to 50 to 75 extra calories / day. This adds up over time. 3. Shape the body proportionately: full body weight training also trains muscles in proportion to the demands of functional movement. A body in appropriate proportion is always more attractive. Physical appearance is determined more by overall shape, not by the size of individual muscles. 4. Helps improve posture: by strengthening muscles and connective tissues, and promoting joint stability (point #1), helps improve postural distortions, thus improving posture and help give the appearance of long lean muscles. For example, by adding pulling movements such as pull-ups and rows to a program, can help rounding shoulders by depressing the scapula and relaxing the cervical extensors revealing the neck, which creates a slimmer appearance without having to do more cardio. 5. Increases bone density: this is an extremely important factor for women over the age of 40. A decrease in bone density is the number one cause of osteoporosis in females. So there is my take on it. Take from it what you can, and hopefully you’ll be reaping the benefits this spring that my girls do. Don’t run your body into the ground with pointless steady-state cardio. Be good to it and it’ll be good to you. Good starting point is strength train with weights 2-3 per times a week, full-body, multi-joint exercises, no more than 10 reps per set. Finish your workout off with 5 to 10 min. of high intensity metabolic work such as Sprint’s, bike sprints, or stair mill, and you’ll love the way you look and feel come the spring.

Obese patients with a body mass index of 30 and obesity related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea now qualify. Patients with a BMI of 40, or 100 lbs over weight still qualify based on weight alone. “Getting started with weight loss surgery can be daunting. a Center of Excellence Surgeon by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The Lap Band system was first approved in 2001. The recent approval to expand the use of the Lap Band system is based on a review of 12-month data and available 24-month data from a prospective, single-arm, non-randomized, multicenter, 5-year study and the more than 17-year safety and effectiveness record of the system. Results from the 12-month dataset showed that 83.9% of the patients lost at least 30% of their excess weight at the 1-year time point, more than twice the percentage required for success. More than 65% of patients were no longer obese after 1 year. Weight loss was maintained in the second year of the study. After 1 year, 22% to 33% of patients saw their obesity related conditions resolve. In addition, approximately 60% of patients who had an obesity related condition at baseline had improvement of at least one of those health problems by month 12.

Organizations For Women In Rockland Are Here To Help. by Jeff Finkle

R

ockland County has many organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of women in many ways. Here are a few of those organizations that make the community a better place. The Rockland Family Shelter is a privately operated, not for profit community agency that is dedicated to ending violence towards women and children. It was founded in the late 1970s “before violence against women was a specific crime in NY,” said Candi Pittari, the Director of Public Relations and Volunteer Resources. The Rockland Family Shelter provides sexual trauma services and an emergency shelter to people who experienced

Family Shelter runs is SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Exam) which offers certified forensic examiners to provide care to victims of sexual assault throughout their entire stay at both Nyack and Good Samaritan Hospital. The SAFE program aids patients from all over the county who come to the hospitals after experiencing their traumas. “It is very rewarding to meet a patient at a hospital and provide them with all the medical services they will need throughout their stay,” said Tara Healy, SAFE coordinator. Without the SAFE program, they might end up at a facility that did not provide the same total care. The Rockland Family Shelter puts together fundraising events to show their appreciation to the community and to raise funding to continue running their operations. An annual Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner was held on May 1st, which honored people who have made special contributions to the community. On May 16th, a reception will be held honoring students who won a photo contest on the theme of ending violence against women, which is an excellent way to make girls aware of the problem at an early age by letting them express their feelings creatively. The Rockland Family Shelter is an invaluable organization that not only functions to aid victims of domestic abuse but develops programs that work to educate youths in order to prevent it from ever happening.

Care Net’s peer counselors are “trained in crisis intervention 101,” noted Ms. Walker. Their services are free and confidential and can have a calming effect on what is no doubt a troubling time for a woman with an unexpected pregnancy. Care Net educates women on abstinence and STD’s as well as guiding them through the decisions they will have to make regarding all pregnancy options but does not actually provide abortions or refer for abortion services. They provide the comfort that comes with information so that women going through a difficult, emotional time can make the best decision that suits their lives.

RBWN supports and empowers women by providing network and educational opportunities.

The Rockland Business Women’s Network (RBWN) was founded in 1979 by a group of women that would meet in each other’s kitchens to help each other expand their career goals. The Health Center which has been funded by the Heinz foundation “uses special equipment during exams that are tailored to the needs of disabled women,” said Diana Hess, Jawonio’s Chief Communications Officer. The Health Center provides services like breast exams and pap smears, but what makes it unique is that the staff has an “understanding and compassion that is unsurpassed when it comes to dealing with women with disabilities,” said Ms. Hess.

The Community Action Partnership of Rockland County is an organization that helps families struggling to get above the poverty line with many different programs, such as food pantries in their locations in Spring Valley and Haverstraw that provide hot meals for families five days a week. They also offer youth counseling, job training and placement. The organization has a Women’s Entrepreneurship Program that last year graduated 18 women out of 30 enrolled who were able to start their own businesses. “We all have skills that can be developed under the proper guidance,” said Ms. Vedetta Hanley, the Executive Director of the Community Action Partnership. Clothesworks is a Rockland County nonprofit organization that provides low-income women with outfits for job interviews to help get them back into the workforce. Naomi Steinberg, who is the Co-Director of Clothesworks along with Sally Heller, takes great joy in “seeing women transform in front of my eyes.” The staff of volunteers runs the organization in the top floor of the Catholic Community Services building. The Catholic Community Services lets them stay there rent free, which enables them to keep their expenses low. Women are sent to Clothesworks through social service agencies and they arrive to be fitted with suits after they have interviews set up. When they get a job, they can come back and pick out more nice clothes that were donated to Clothesworks by various manufacturers and retired people. Women will put on the clothes and immediately change their demeanor and posture as it gives them a chance to look and feel like everyone else. Out of all the organizations that benefit women in Rockland County, perhaps no other one offers the volunteers quite the same satisfaction of witnessing a sudden transformation in the people they help. Putting on a nice suit helps them shed their insecurities and restores their confidence.

profit organization that focuses on building personal relationships, leadership, and professional development for women in business and female small business owners. It supports and empowers women by providing network and educational opportunities. The RBWN puts together several fundraising events such as their annual awards dinner which will be held on June 1st at the Pearl River Hilton. The event will include fun activities such as a “Sing-Off ” and a professional acapella group to entertain those in attendance, as well as giving out the Women of the Year awards and the Charity of the Year awards. The organization raises money each year to set up scholarships to send three deserving high school girls to college. Beth Blecker is the President of RBWN and has been on its board since 1995 and loves that it enables her to “mentor and help other people.” The great thing about being in RBWN is that the different members can meet women who can sometimes help them with their business weak points. Ms. Blecker is an owner of an independent financial planning firm but was able to meet women whose expertise is in marketing which enabled her to learn from them and apply their marketing advice to her own business. RBWN is an excellent resource for established women in all fields of business to network and for women just starting out in the workplace who could use the guidance of a mentor who has already achieved success in the business world. An organization dedicated to the personal growth of others through business networking has become one of Rockland County’s best resources for women.

Considering weight loss surgery? Obesity is a complex, multi-factorial chronic disease involving environmental, genetic, metabolic, and behavioral components. Obesity is now the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. after smoking. The United States National Institute of Health recommends weight loss surgery and has endorsed weight loss surgery as the only effective means of inducing significant weight loss for the vast majority of severely obese patients. “With weight loss surgery, patients have a tool that has been proven to help them lose weight and dramatically improve or eliminate the health related problems such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea in the overwhelming majority of patients.” says Dr. Edward Pucci of Rockland Bariatrics. With over 10 years experience and outcomes better than the national average, we are proud to provide the highest quality bariatric surgery New York and New Jersey has to offer. We are certified as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The “Scarless Surgery Revolution” has arrived! Our surgeons use the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures including single incision laproscopic surgery, also known as SILS. This allows our patients the possible elimination of scarring, minimal pain and a shortened recovery time. We also provide the latest in Medically Supervised Weight Loss and support programs.

FACT: Kids Learn Best When They’re Having Fun! 5 Ways to Make Learning Fun for Kids 1. Make it Interactive When kids are engaged in an activity, they are more focused and entertained than when they merely sit and listen. TRY THIS: The game “Simon Says” is a fun, interactive way to teach kids about basic human anatomy. 2. Make it a Treat Kids love desserts, and there are many ways to use ordinary desserts as extraordinary teaching tools. TRY THIS: Demonstrate a practical use for fractions by slicing a cake or pie into halves, fourths, etc. 3. Make it a Family Affair Kids learn by example, and who better to set that example than parents and close family members? TRY THIS: Take a family trip to the zoo, asking kids to identify the names of different animals they see. 4. Make it Familiar Ease the stress of learning something new by incorporating familiar characters from your child’s favorite book, movie, or TV show. TRY THIS: If your kids love Dora the Explorer, have them write a story about Dora, and draw pictures to go with it. 5. Make it Musical Educational videos and songs are great for holding kids’ attention, and are inherently entertaining, especially during long car rides and flights. TRY THIS: Change the words to a familiar tune like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” to help kids remember concepts they are learning in school. Find the best learning tools and teaching resources for your child at Educational Warehouse®, where Bringing Education and Fun Together has never been easier!

What Does Our Treatment Address? It is okay to use several methods of treatment, as long as they are safe and effective. Some clients have been on Weight Watchers, Medifast, seeing a nutritionist or have had Gastric Band surgery. Our treatment addresses a number of needs not always identified or treated in weight loss; subconscious motivations and factors, habits, erroneous theories and learning, emotional factors, ways to address and overcome any existing barriers and others that we identify together. Methods not addressing these areas leave us vulnerable to the impact of them being “under the radar”; having an effect we are not aware of and therefore unable to notice and address. The time is now to start. You can do it. Take the first step. What is Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis? It’s a fact that if you’ve taken that first step and begin this Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis at Harbor Crest uses hypnosis, process, with whichever method, you will be weighing less and the power of your mind, to help you feel as if you have had feeling better than you are now. Remain focused on progress, gastric band surgery and that your stomach is reduced in size. not perfection. Together with education, and cognitive-behavioral tools and What Else Does Being Overweight Effect? There are a number of health conditions that weight can impact including pressure on joints, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and others you may have heard from your physician. It’s important to make an impact now; as it has been said a journey of a thousand miles (and much less pounds!) the process begins with a single step. At Harbor Crest we are invested in success; long lasting success. Our best advertisement is seeing our clients lose weight and feel better physically and mentally. As Harbor Crest is a counseling practice we are dedicated to helping people feel better and succeed in their goals.

TESTIMONIALS Edward age 45 reported, “I had severe pollen allergies for years and 2009 was the first year I got no Ragweed allergies. It works...amazing!”

Stephen age 11 reported, “I had severe cat allergies that caused my eyes to swell horribly. After six laser treatments for cat I can now play with cats without any reactions and it’s been over six months since my last laser treatment.”

Dr. William Johnson, B.S., D.C. 221 South Middletown Rd. Nanuet We treat the patient who has the condition, not the condition of the patient. Laser reduces neurological stress associated with substances.

Advanced Laser Therapy for: Quit Smoking, Migraines, Brain Fog, Weight Loss, Shingles and Chronic Viral Illness

Frequently Asked Questions Q: How does the laser help? A: An allergy is an error. The BAX-3000 uses a laser to stimulate a patient's nervous system and gives the body energy to change it response to an allergen. Laser therapy helps recondition the body to no longer perceive specific substances as harmful, thus calming down the immune system. Q: What allergies can the BAX-3000 identify? A: The BAX-3000 computer has over 96,000 substances in the advanced procedures libraries. These substances are stored in the computer in the form of a digital frequency that matches the energetic frequency of the real substance. Q: Is the BAX-3000 safe for children? A: Yes, the BAX-3000 FDA cleared and is safe for people of all ages. Q: Are there any side effects? A: No. A small percentage of patients report slight flushing for a short time (an hour or so) after their session, but this is actually a sign that the body is detoxifying (a good thing)! You cannot feel the laser and it works great for allergies. Q: How many visits are needed? A: The number of visits required depends entirely on the severity of the case. It depends upon how many and what types of allergies the patient has. A typical patient might require 2, 6, 10 or 30 visits. The average number of visits required is 10. Q: How long is a typical visit? A: The typical first visit last 60 minutes. Normal treatment visits is no longer than 10 minutes. Q: Is this an insurance-reimbursable service? A: All insurances vary. New City Fire Chief builds beautiful homes while helping to protect the community he loves. Jim Avaras has lived in New City his whole life. He is a successful home builder in the Rockland area and has been designing homes through his company Executive Homes for over thirty years. He is as passionate about creating beautiful homes as he is dedicated to protecting the homes of Master builder Jim Avaras. people in his community as the New City Asst. Fire Chief. He has been a fireman even longer than he has worked as a builder and joined the fire department when he was just sixteen years old. Mr. Avaras considers the other firemen to be his second family and like the rest of the volunteer department he is willing to drop whatever he is doing and be on the scene within four minutes. One time he had clients in his vehicle when he got the call so he took them along to the fire. “Some people go to therapy, I go to fires. The clients got a big kick out of it,” he said.

Jim Avaras is more than just a home builder; he is an artist who spends his free time on the look-out for items like the antique mirrors or stain glass windows which would fit the rustic, yet modern look for the homes he designs. “The wood floors in our own home are 150-year-old reclaimed barn wood that Jim found,” said Mrs. Avaras, who is also a home builder in her own right. When Avaras finds pieces like antique fire place mantles or old gorgeous sinks, he buys them, knowing they will make a perfect touch for one of the homes he will work be working on.

While discussing Jim’s passion for design, Mrs. Avaras noted that the family owns a farm upstate and Jim literally redesigned the surrounding area by creating a waterfall and a lake that he stocked with fish. He took a quaint farm and turned it into a picturesque country getaway spot that would be fitting of a “Wish you were here” postcard.

As much pride as he takes in being a fireman, he is not a boastful man and his wife Connie Avaras was the one who brought up his twelve year service in the Rescue 3 division in New York City. “Only the top of the top firemen get to serve in Rescue 3,” she said. Homeowners choose Executive hind, but the fire dept. has train set and walked and stomped on the set, crushing most of Homes, because of Mr. Avaras’ belief in designing and renever been just a job to Jim the tiny buildings in his highly-detailed train town. He rose to youngest son to help him pick out pieces for the train set and modern homes that have a “country looking feel”, he said. Jim Avaras is a self-described old-fashioned type of guy the level of Asst. He recalled a story of a man who called him up on a Sunday and told him that he hated the house he lived in and after the renovation was complete he said to Mr. Avaras “I come home and I’m happy now. I have a smile on my face.” “If you’re not comfortable in your home and it’s not you, than why do you have a home?” stated Mr. Avaras passionately. Jim Avaras uses the finest materials for his home designs and only uses top of the line craftsmen, or journeymen.
