The Right Stage for Live Theater By Evelyn J. Mocbeichel

the audience must be very quiet and not talk during the play. Let them know the songs and other music will be loud enough so everyone, even those in the very back of the theater, can hear it. As the theater darkens, watch the expression on the child’s face. Usually, it will be one of awe, excitement and anticipation. Five and older is a good age to see a first live show. Don’t rush to introduce children to live theater if there’s a chance of scaring them from future experiences because they were intimidated by the story on stage. After the show, chat with the child about what s/he saw. You may be surprised at some of the answers!

Recently, our two grandchildren were excited to see a local performance of the classic fairy tale Rapunzel. Introducing a young child at the right stage to a theater performance is a joy worth experiencing, and need not be expensive. Check high school, dance or movement programs that welcome guests to their performances, usually at affordable prices. Besides enjoying the storyline, it is a perfect time to teach a child theater etiquette as part of the learning experience. Explain what is expected, describe the storyline, and talk about proper behavior in the theater. Prepare the child for a darkened theater, and stress that they need to stay seated throughout the performance. Members of

As is typical of similar theaters, its repertory favors familiar fare like Annie, Pinocchio and Jack and the Beanstalk. This summer, Yorktown Stage ( is putting up Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At Elmsford’s Westchester Broadway Theatre (, high-flying Mary Poppins is set for May, while the one and only The Wizard of Oz performs his magic in July. To read other Bits & Pieces, go to news.
