A Father’s Day Tribute to my Dad

By Evelyn J. Mocbeichel With Father’s Day approaching, my thoughts turn to loving memories of my dad. When I was little he spent time showing and teaching me some of the things that he enjoyed doing.

My being a girl never stopped him from sharing his favorite things with me and he would say “girls can do anything boys can do”. I grew up in the Bronx where he taught me how to play stickball and how to hit a Spalding clear up the street. Dad enjoyed watching television and he introduced me to what would soon become my favorite programs and movies, too. We watched Roy Rodgers and Dale Evans, The Cisco Kid and the Lone Ranger together and any other western, particularly with John Wayne in it. Weekends I stayed up later to join dad watching old horror movies. We watched Boris Karloff as the Mummy or Frankenstein or Lon Chaney werewolf movies. I would hide under the afghan thrown over the sofa and sit close to him

as we watched the movie, but felt safe next to him. Musicals were popular choices he liked with Al Jolson, Judy Garland, and Johnny Ray some of his favorites. I listened to these singers and watched old 1940’s musicals with dad so often that people always thought I was older than I was because I could name and list the performers, movies and songs like the back of my hand. I loved Gene Kelly’s tap dancing and Fred and Ginger’s ballroom dancing just as much as dad. When these lively musicals came on, it was sometimes enough to make dad want to join in with them. He didn’t dance, sing, or play a regular musical instrument, he had his own that he would pull out on rare occasions. His instrument was simply, two spoons. Placing them between his

them on his knee to come up with the sound that makes them so distinct. To this day, it frustrates me because it was the only thing that he tried to teach me that I couldn’t master, no matter how often he

showed me. He was also a great cook and made a delicious tomato sauce and said “the secret was in cooking it at least three hours”. Stuffed with sausage, ground beef and pork chops, it was better than any you could eat in a restaurant.

As I look over the many years we had with my father, I feel truly blessed and so does my mom, husband, and our three daughters. We miss his funny sense of humor that he had without trying.

He could make a comment or remark that gave you a chuckle as he put his spin on some situation that was taking place. I look around my house and see signs of him everywhere. There are

The Talent Trap

Let’s join to cheer that grand old tradition that mends alcoholics and gimped horses, broken tree branches, the forlorn, and not least, errant economies. “Recovery” is peeping through a still clouded marketplace, as though in step with the anticipated glory attending pent-up demand, and unabashedly the rite of spring. Let’s hear it for a stronger market and the simple joy in employment.

Even small gains can get us into work earlier and to local shops for the things we really needed these past years of belt tightening.

As the economy soars, and jobs grow, the supply of candidates is likely to put pressure on employers to shorten their hiring cycles and beef up their -,+,*)(') &%%,$#+"'! $ ) + ) '&%( ) $) + ( $ ) (,+ ,+ )(&) $, ( ) &$,) ( +) $, (, ) (&) -&$) $ ,() +",'!( ,) &+,') , ,) -,,+) & #+")%&$!$ #',')( ,)$#' )&% ) &&$) " ,+()#+)( ,)$ ' )(&) & ,(, ) ( ') ) #%*) ()($# )(&)- + ,)&+)( ,),+ )&% )( ,) & '# , )- )( () “recovery” usually forms. A good design engineering tool in the hands of a gifted engineer may increase his productivity manifold, but the tool will have little affect on the design team if the organization is not gifted () '#+")#(!( ,)'&%()' # ')&% )"&& )&$" +# (#&+' ) +)&$ ,$) &$ ' )( ,) organization must become the “star.” The “talent trap” assumes that smart people make smart organizations. More frequently, it is smart organizations that make smart people.

In the end, successful organizations are not all-star teams, though they are endowed of star performers. They have a more inclusive + ( $,)-, ',)( ,)', % % *) ,+()&% )'( $')#')&%(,+)#+) &+ )# () #( ) the best interests of the whole.
