Michael Beswick AMHERST — University of Massachusetts football coach Charley Molnar gave reporters a rundown of who would start at which positions after Thursday's practice, which was the final session of fall camp. Here's a rundown of what Molnar said. Quarterback: Mike Wegzyn Running Back: Chris Burns, Michael Cox, Jamar Smith Wide Receiver 1: Marken Michel Tight End: Rob Blanchflower Slot Receiver/Multi-purpose back: Alan Williams Wide Receiver 2: Deion Walker/Tajae Sharpe Tackles: Nick Speller, Jamie Casselberry, Stephane Milhim Guards: John Wallace, Michael Boland, Stephane Milhim UMass coach Charley Molnar has a pretty good idea of who will play against UConn on Aug. 30
Center: Quinton Sales Defensive End: Stanley Andre, Ryan Delaire, Kevin Byrne, Brandon Potvin Defensive Tackle: Chaz Thompson, Galen Clemons, Hafis Williams, Daniel Maynes Linebackers: Perry McIntyre, Tom Brandt, Greg Hilliard Safeties: Darren Thellen, Christian Birt Cornerbacks: Antoine Tharpe, Randall Jette Molnar said that all eight of the players listed above at defensive end and defensive tackle would play, and the four most healthy would start. As you can see though, not everything has been decided, in particular at running back and on the offensive line.
"Inside positioning of offensive linemen is not settled because we’ve had so many bumps and bruises — literally we’ve had eight guys rolling with the ones. All eight of them have an opportunity to start," Molnar said. "I can tell you what five started today, but they probably won’t be the first five to start necessarily against UConn." Molnar said that if Stephane Milhim does not win a starting spot at tackle, he will start at guard. At running back, junior Jamar Smith has inserted himself into the discussion, according to Molnar. "Jamar Smith has really come on in the last several days," Molnar said. "We didn’t say, here, we’re going to put you in. He just proved that he deserves to have a shot at running out there for the first snap against UConn." Molnar also mentioned that freshmen cornerbacks D'Metrius Williams and Trey Dudley-Giles would see plenty of playing time. "The difference between our third corner and our second corner is tiny," Molnar said. "I would see all four guys playing in the game." At linebacker, Molnar mentioned Tim Brandt, D.J. Adeoba, Jovan Santos-Knox, Rob O'Connor and Leo Krizanovic as guys that were "right in the mix" for playing time as well.
