EVACUATION SPORTS CENTER

The devastation that Puerto Rico recently faced in 2017 with a wave of recent hurricanes (Maria, Irma) was profound. These natural disasters impacted the majority of the archipelago with severe power outages throughout the major cities leaving citizens without electricity, food, or water. In light of this, Puerto Rico is in dire need of construction and restoration in order to get the U.S. territory back on its feet. One such construction project is the “Design Six Studio” which would serve as a sports facility and evacuation center in Puerto Rico’s capital city, San Juan. To begin, as previously mentioned, Design Six Studio will be both a sports facility as well as an evacuation center located within San Juan, Puerto Rico. Its total lot size will occupy approximately 60,000 square feet, with the dimension of approximately 175’ x 400’. The project shall specifically consist of a community sports center that will be available to residents of all ages, an evacuation community center, once again, for all of those in need (capacity allowing), and residential housing totaling 15 units. This particular location has been affected by hurricanes in the past. For example, the informal housing which spans along the Martin Pena Canal in the Hato Rey area of San Juan, has suffered from extensive flooding after Puerto Rico’s latest hurricane, Maria. In addition to that major storm, this particular area is always subject to damage as a result of runoff and draining issues following frequent tropical storms. This area is directly juxtaposed to the bustling financial district to the West of the region. The locus of this project will be situated between the informal housing structures and a newly designed high-end condominium complex. The original plan was to elevate the evacuation and sports facilities while keeping the residential housing unit at grade. This would assure that in the event of an emergency or crisis resulting from a natural disaster, the units would be elevated on a four feet plinth.

- IRREGULAR SITE GEOMETRY OF THE SITE PROVIDED OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN SPORT CENTER IN 15 DEGREE ANGLE. THIS ARRANGEMENT ALSO COMPLEMENTS THE CONTINUOUS AND GRADUAL SYSTEM OF THE PROGRAM.

A SOLUTION TO THE FLOODING, STORM-WATER RUNOFF AND DRAINAGE ISSUES IS THE CONCEPT OF ELEVATING THE FACILITIES BY 4-FEET HIGH PLATFORM.
