Music and Art, Within Our Hearts 2011-2012 New York District Key Club Message from the Governor: Hey New York District Key Club! This is Governor Domenick here to tell you about the Governors Project for the 2011-2012 service year. The Governors Project is a service based project each year, focusing upon a specific category. This year we will be performing a very unique type of project, not recently done in the past. This years Governor's Project is called “Music and Art Within our Hearts”. It simply advocates and encourages the planning of service projects or fundraising that somehow involves or promotes the music and the arts. With the economy in its current condition, and school administrators cutting left and right, students are beginning to lose out on things such as music, arts, and even Key Clubs! This is an opportune time to show your teachers, parents, and administrators how much extra curriculars mean to you as well as all of the good they accomplish. A Little More About the Governors Project: Music, arts, and promotion of your club is what you should focus on. We all know what music includes, but the arts is defined below for those of you that would like a more specific take on what you can plan. More resources including information and service project ideas involving the 2011-2012 Governor's Project will be available soon on our website www.nydkc.org, so check it out every so often! Why Music? Music and Arts is academic. For some people, this is the primary reason for providing music lessons to their children. A recent study from the University of California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction. Music And Arts is emotional. Music is an art form. We are emotional beings and every person requires an artistic outlet. Music and Arts is for life. Most people can’t play soccer, or football at 70 or 80 years of age but they can sing or they can play piano or some other instrument. Music is a gift you can give others that lasts a lifetime.
**Clubs with the most creative and successful service project involving the Governors Project can apply to be recognized at our Leadership Training Conference this year. The award details will be announced as soon as our Awards Booklet releases. Awards will recognize 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, so start planning now!
