NEW YORK CITY CENTER EDUCATION 2012-2013


NEW YORK CITY CENTER EDUCATION PROGRAMS 2012-2013 SEASON Each year, New York City Center works to provide New York City public school students the opportunity to discover the worlds of dance and musical theater through in-depth creative programming. By collaborating with world-renowned dance companies and City Center’s acclaimed Encores! productions, students are able to cultivate their artistry, discover new cultures, and experience the joy of self-expression through learning in art. Throughout the year, teachers participate in professional development workshops, learning skills to prepare their students for live performances. This season, through our Dance & Operetta program, schools were able to experience Ailey II, New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players and Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía in their own classrooms and on our mainstage. Through our Musical Theater program, productions of Fiorello! It’s A Bird... It’s A Plane... It’s Superman, and On Your Toes, were presented as a part of the Encores! 20th Anniversary Season. In addition, as a part of our Introduction to Musical Theater program, students from across New York City were able to attend City Center’s collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Cotton Club Parade, view New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players productions of The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, and Yeomen of the Guard, as well as all three Encores! shows.

LEVELS OF INVOLVEMENT New York City Center Education is celebrating over 20 years of bringing performing arts to the NYC public schools. Each year, City Center reaches over 8,000 students in grades K-12 through performances and workshops, while addressing the NYC Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, New York State Standards and Common Core Standards. By building on the diverse works presented on the City Center mainstage, the Education Program is able to offer four levels of involvement across all performing arts disciplines offered each season. Our Introduction to Performing Arts program offers schools the opportunity to bring students to see a live performance on our mainstage. In our Workshops program, students connect to performing arts through pre- and postperformance workshops taught by dance company members and City Center teaching artists in their own classroom. Mini-Residency and Residency programs offer schools the opportunity to dive deeper into the worlds of dance and musical theater. Today students participate in City Center education programs, not just as spectators, but also as dancers, writers, composers and choreographers.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DANCE

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Schools that have established partnerships with City Center welcome dance teaching artists for students grades Pre-K-3 into their classrooms. These artists collaborate with teachers to actively engage children in experiencing the power of dance as a way of communication and self-expression. Students learn basic movement and choreographic skills in musical and rhythmic contexts and begin to work independently and in small groups.

For all programs, teachers attend day-long professional development workshops at City Center, providing them with the necessary skills to prepare their students to participate in dance and musical theater learning. Study guides, lesson plans, and DVDs are provided to help teachers extend learning through the performing arts and integrate the work with what’s already happening in their classrooms. Workshops are co-presented by City Center teaching artists and professional artists from participating companies.

FALL FOR DANCE LAB The Lab is a full day of professional development that provides a rich opportunity for teaching artists and dance educators to explore the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts: Dance. Participants take two master classes from Festival performers, followed by a workshop that investigates approaches to teaching dance, critical and creative responses to different dance styles and genres, and applications to classroom practice.

Rachel, 11th Grade Cardozo High School, Queens My favorite part of the experience was being able to see how powerful dance can truly be. I love the fact that you can really convey strong emotion through Flamenco. Jalyn, 5th Grade PS 84, MANHATTAN I learned that musical theater performers have to work together with their fellow performers. Also, I learned that you have to pracice a lot to get it right. Cassie, 8th Grade MS 210, QUEENS I discovered you can’t give up. Whether its singing, acting, or dancing - you always have to keep going no matter how much practice it takes. Jannatul, 8th Grade MS 210, QUEENS I didn't know how to dance, but I learned. We made a song by ourselves and I never knew we could do that. Michaella, 8th Grade MS 210, QUEENS This residency did affect my work in school because I was usually happy after the rehearsals so I would be more focused on my work. Betsy, 8th Grade CS 211, Bronx Doing the Fiorello! song was a fun experience that me, my family, friends, and my class could all share together!

It was fun because we were looking for words to rhyme. Also, we were working together and everyone had a lot of ideas. Emma, 7th Grade CLINTON SCHOOL FOR WRITERS AND ARTISTS, MANHATTAN It inspired me to want to pursue ballet more seriously. Elymarie, 9th Grade HIGH SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCE, MANHATTAN On Your Toes inspired me to visit and see more musical theater productions. Ashe, 5th Grade PS 144, QUEENS My favorite part was the music and dancing. I liked the music because it was catchy and had a nice melody. I liked the dancing because they were very graceful, elegant, and inspiring.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEATER I WAS INSPIRED BY THEIR EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE THEY MUST HAVE PRACTICED A LOT. Kevin, 3rd Grade Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Manhattan Kayla, 8th Grade JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 194, QUEENS My favorite part was the singing - how fascinating it was and how high and clear the voices could go. The dance coordination was impeccable. Also, the way the actors connected to their characters was so amazing. Jeremiah, 10th Grade UNIVERSITY HIGH HS, BRONX The dancing was outstanding and just made me want to try. Ariana, 3rd Grade PS 193, QUEENS I want to be an actress when I grow up and it was nice seeing actors on stage. TEACHER REFLECTIONS

Megan Minturn, 8th Grade Teacher BROOKLYN INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, BROOKLYN This is a priceless program essential for our students! As international students, it is especially powerful for them to see a performance by such an incredible, moving company. Tanya Mgrdechian, High School Teacher CARDOZO HIGH SCHOOL, QUEENS Learning Flamenco choreography was new to a lot of the students. It opened their minds to learning dance from another culture. Tom Amper, Math Teacher PS 21, QUEENS It was successful because it was challenging, yet attainable, so the students felt themselves making progress in accomplishing something difficult. So many students said this activity made them more confident in themselves. Since my students really “get it� - it makes the concept of being a performing artist or an audience member more real to them.
