COMPOSERS ROGER BLANC completed a Master's degree in Composition with teacher David Diamond at the Juilliard School, where he was an assistant teacher in Ear Training and Theory for five years. He has had concert music performed at venues including Alice Tully Hall, CAMI Hall, The Whitney Museum Sculpture Court, St. Peter's / Citicorp Center, The New School, Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, the Juilliard School, Connecticut College, and abroad in Italy, London, Brazil, and Romania; and on concert series including Composers Concordance, Eclectix, New York Composers Circle, and Vox Novus. He has arranged, transcribed, composed, orchestrated, produced, or otherwise prepared/organized/supervised music for media including television (the Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Arsenio Hall), film (ca. 60 feature films including Frida, The Untouchables, Wag The Dog, Flirting With Disaster, Fargo, The Stepford Wives, Cadillac Records), the recording industry (many artists including Barbra Streisand, Yoko Ono, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bette Midler, Luciano Pavarotti, Kelly Clarkson), Broadway (Welcome to the Club, Catch Me If You Can) and live performance (venues including Carnegie Hall, City Center, Radio City Music Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madison Square Garden, the United Nations; events including Comic Relief, the 2004 Democratic National Convention, the 2006 Super Bowl, Fashion Rocks 2008, and the 2010 World Cup opening concert). He lives with his wife and son in New York, his instrument is the guitar, and he performs frequently at clubs around the city. Maneuvers for Violin and Viola was originally composed for violist Paul Coletti, and was premiered by him in New York's CAMI Hall with Hanne-Berit Hahnemann on violin. The original inspirations for this piece were the Mozart String Duos for violin and viola (works to which the present piece bears little or no resemblance). RICHARD BROOKS holds a B.S. degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College, an M.A. in Composition from Binghamton University, and a Ph.D. in Composition from New York University. In December 2004 he retired from Nassau Community College where he taught for 30 years; for the last 22 years he served as department chairperson. From 1977 to 1982 he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Society of University Composers (now the Society of Composers, Inc.). In 1981 he was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Composers Alliance. After serving two terms as Secretary and three terms as Vice-President he was elected President and served from 1993-2002. He is an active composer with over 90 works to his credit, including two full-length operas. His children’s opera, Rapunzel, was most recently produced by the Cincinnati Opera, which gave it 65 performances. He was selected as New Music Connoisseur’s New Music

Champion for 2006-2007 in recognition of his work with Capstone Records on behalf of new music. He also served as Composer-in-Residence with The Lark Ascending (New York City). He writes: “Lamentation for Those Departed, written in 2011, is a fantasy on an old Danish hymn. The immediate impetus for this piece was the sudden, brutal death of a young friend, Robert Jackson, Jr. He was struck down at age 35 by an unknown assailant early one morning in September 2010. No one knows why this happened and, as can be imagined, all his friends and family were devastated. 'RJ' was a charming, intelligent, witty young man with a fine future ahead of him. Such a loss is almost incomprehensible. It seems that so many people close to me have died in recent years and I find myself in constant mourning. Once again I have tried to express these feelings through music. 'RJ' was a deeply religious person and so I thought that incorporating a hymn tune into the piece would be fitting. The old Danish hymn 'Herra' was unknown to me, but I find it to be lovely in its simplicity.” JACOB E. GOODMAN, founder of the New York Composers Circle in 2002, is Professor Emeritus of mathematics at City College (The City University of New York), the author of many books and research articles, and a founding editor of the journal Discrete & Computational Geometry. He has composed and improvised all his life, and has studied composition with, among others, Ezra Laderman and David Del Tredici. Recent compositions include a set of six intermezzi for piano, two song cycles, a set of variations on a Beethoven theme, a quintet for piano and strings, a prelude for saxophone and piano, Oui, J'Aime Brahms for cello and piano, a set of nocturnes for violin and piano, a set of variations for piano trio, and the score for the documentary film Meet Me at the Canoe, produced for the American Museum of Natural History by his daughter Naomi Goodman. Variations for a Rainy Afternoon was begun and sketched out on a rainy afternoon some ten years ago. It was performed at the second concert of the New York Composers Circle in 2004, and recently revised. CARL KANTER majored in music at Harvard College, graduating in 1953. Thereafter, he attended Harvard Law School and practiced law for about 40 years. After retiring, he has returned to composition, and has written in a variety of genres including string quartets, a piano and a violin concerto, and numerous smaller works. The title of the Summer Quartet refers to the time when it was composed and not to a potential sunny nature of the music. In fact the first and last movements are rather harsh with a melodious slow movement sandwiched between. Award-winning composer DEBRA KAYE has received a steady stream of commissions since 2003. Critics describe her as “a unique voice, American, through and through,” “colorful and profound,” capable of delivering “large emotions in small forms.” This year she has signed with PARMA Recordings and Grammy-winning Classical Producer of the Year, Judith Sherman, for a CD of her chamber music. Circle, Debra currently serves on the board of the Howland Chamber Music Circle in Beacon, N.Y. She is a longstanding faculty member of the Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division. For news of Debra's upcoming release, contact her to join the mailing list ( Duet after Winter was inspired by the immediacy of an email correspondence with a loved one who was in Japan during the recent earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country. The two violins begin in unison, dovetail and duet, responding to the same themes, never quite in the same place at the same time. EUGENE MARLOW, Ph.D., is a composer/arranger, producer, presenter, performer, author, journalist, and educator who has written 200+ classical and jazz compositions for solo instruments, jazz and classical chamber groups, and jazz big band. Under his MEII Enterprises indie label, he has produced eight critically acclaimed CDs of original compositions and arrangements. Several of his jazz compositions and arrangements have appeared on Grammy-nominated albums produced by Latin-jazz great Bobby Sanabria (on the JazzHeads label). His classical CD, Les Sentiments D’Amour (MEII Enterprises 2006), was lauded by 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec: “With elegance, beauty, and consummate skill, composer Eugene Marlow captures and projects a remarkably wide range of deeply felt sentiments.” His classical chamber compositions have been performed by the Kandinsky String Quartet, the Corigliano String Quartet, the Circadia Woodwind Quintet, the Damocles Trio, Alaria, the Sylvan Winds, 60x60 (electronic), and virtuoso solo pianists Nada Loutfi, Natalie Synhaivsky, Nataliya Medvedovskaya, and Shiau-uen Ding. He has studied classical composition with Paul Moravec, George Tsontakis (2005 Grawemeyer Award winner), and Maurice Peress (former Associate Conductor, New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein). Dr. Marlow is a former member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, and a current member of the Jazz Journalists Association, the New York Composers Circle, Chamber Music America, American Composers Forum, and the National Music Publishers Association. He is a voting member of The Recording Academy (NARAS). La Femme d'un Temps Passé au Présent was inspired by his reconnection a few years ago with a camp counselor from Marlow's teenage years after a fifty-year hiatus. The work is his fourth string quartet. A multi-year ASCAPlus winner, RICHARD D. RUSSELL’s music has been performed internationally and at prominent venues in New York. Highlights include a September 11, 2002 memorial performance of Remembrances at Merkin Concert Hall, and a performance of Design for Lightning by trombonist Haim Avitsur in Israel. His music has also been performed in Bulgaria and Japan. In New York, some venues have included Symphony Space Thalia, BargeMusic, CAMI Hall, the Ethical Culture Society, and Mannes College of Music. The two songs on this evening's program were commissioned for a performance presented by In Mid Air Productions in New Jersey, a performing group that seeks to combine classic literature with modern music.

PERFORMERS Recognized by audiences for her theatrical flair and sparkling performance, soprano SOFIA DIMITROVA currently makes her home in New York City where she enjoys a busy career exploring and performing a wide range of music —from rarely performed Baroque gems to today’s living composers. Her opera roles include performances in both fully- and semi-staged works. In May 2012, Ms. Dimitrova sang Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte. She has sung the role of Venus in Venus & Adonis by John Blow; the title role in Dido & Æneas; the characters of Sospecha and Calliope in a production of La Purpúra de la Rosa under the direction of Andrew Lawrence-King at the Amherst Early Music Festival; and the role of Damon in Handel’s Acis & Galatea. She has also performed featured roles in productions of Caccini’s La Liberazione di Ruggiero (Nunzia), Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (Drusilla and Damigella), Il Pastor Fido (Mirtillo) and Triomphi with the New York Continuo Collective as well as the role of Sappho in Prismatic Production’s show Love Stories. Ms. Dimitrova was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall (under the direction of Ton Koopman) as part of the Carnegie Hall Professional Workshop. She was also a participant in the 2010 Caramoor Bel Canto academy under the baton of Maestro Crutchfield. Her oratorio repertoire includes solos in Handel’s Messiah with the Monmouth Civic Chorus, Graun’s Der Tod Jesu, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio, and Brahms’s Requiem among others. She was also a soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria in a concert performed in Siena, Italy. As an advocate of new music, Ms. Dimitrova has performed and commissioned works by Paul Moravec, David Tcimpidis, Richard Russell, Thomas Addison, Raphael Fusco, Evan Lewis, Marilyn Bliss, and Kevin McCarter. Ms. Dimitrova has enjoyed an international career, having performed in Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, the United States, and in her native Bulgaria. She has sung with The New York Continuo Collective, ARTEK, and Musica Bella Orchestra among others, and is a founder of Ensemble Solaire. She has performed at Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y. Historical Society, Concerts at One, Midtown Music Series, Stony Brook University, and on the New York Early Music Series. As a performing member of the New York Composers Circle she has performed in NYU Engleman Hall, Saint Peter’s Church, and in recorded readings produced by the organization as well as outreach concerts in New York City schools. Ms. Dimitrova started her musical education at the age of five on violin. In 1999 she came to New York to study vocal performance at the Mannes College of Music, from which she holds both an undergraduate and a Master’s degree. Her teachers and coaches include Neal Goren, Diana Soviero, Lois Winter, Amy Burton, Glenn Morton, Kamal Kahn, and Joshua Greene. MATTHEW GOEKE, cellist, performs as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra player in a broad range of musical styles. He is a member of the

Stamford Symphony, Musica Sacra, Eos Orchestra, the Cross Town Ensemble, SEM Ensemble, North/South Consonance, and the Kitchen House Blend. Solo performances include the Dvorak and Brahms "Double" concertos with the Centre Symphony and the Shostakovitch Concerto No. 1 with the New York Repertory Orchestra. He also performs and records with the bands Church of Betty (Tripping with Wanda, Fruit on the Vine), GIANTfingers (GIANTfingers), and Voltaire (The Devil's Bris, Almost Human, Boo-Hoo). Classical recordings include North/South Recordings (Howard Rovics: Retrospective, and Elan) and 4Tay, Inc. (Elodie Lauten: The Deus Ex Machina Cycle), as well as Opus One Records, Polygram, Elektra, Tzadik, and Koch International Classics. Violinist RIEKO KAWABATA made her solo debut with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten. After studying under Toshiya Eto at the Toho-Gakuen School of Music, Ms. Kawabata moved to the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras including the Nova Vista Symphony Orchestra, the Palo Alto Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, the last of these broadcast on WGUC-FM. Among her numerous awards and competitions, she is most fond of being granted the special honor of performing on a Guarneri del Gesu violin formerly owned by Jascha Heifetz at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Currently, Ms. Kawabata is a founding member of the Klang String Quartet and a director of the Amor Ensemble. She has been active not only in the classical field, but also in commercial film, movies, and Broadway musicals throughout the United States. Some of her work includes performances in a Warner Brothers picture and in ESPN films, as well as in a commercial film for the San Francisco International Airport. In addition, she has performed with such bands and singers as the George Gee Swing Orchestra, Josh Groban. Boys II Men, Sigur Ros, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, Ray Chew, and Frank Sinatra, Jr. GREGOR KITZIS, violinist, plays regularly with The Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, is the concertmaster and contractor of Orchestra of Our Time, the first violinist of the Scorchio Electric String Quartet, and a founding member of The Ouluska Pass Chamber Music Festival in Saranac Lake, N.Y. He has performed Baroque music at Blanche Moyse's New England Bach Festival and on period instruments with The Grand Tour Orchestra, and orchestral music with Concordia, the Long Island Philharmonic, and the Roanoke Symphony; premiered and recorded countless new works with ensembles including Speculum Musicae, The Group For Contemporary Music, Bang On A Can's Spit Orchestra, The Glass Farm Ensemble, the Albany Symphony, Ensemble 21, and North/South Consonance; recorded for David Bowie; been the string contractor for TV appearances with Enya, and performed with artists ranging from Anthony Braxton, Elliot Sharp, and Don Byron to John Cage, Morton Feldman, Elliot Carter, and George Crumb, playing everything from solo and chamber music recitals and Broadway Shows to rock, ragtime, Klezmer, Indian, and Tango in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to the late CBGB's, The

Kitchen, The Knitting Factory, Saturday Night Live, the David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Rosie O'Donnell, and Jay Leno Shows, and new music and jazz festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. “New-music luminary” (The New York Times) and “leading exponent of the avant-garde flute” (Village Voice) MARGARET LANCASTER has premiered well over 100 pieces and has built a large repertoire of new works composed specifically for her that employ extended techniques, dance, drama, multi-media, and electronics. Performance highlights include Lincoln Center Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Ibsen Festival, Santa Fe New Music, Whitney Museum, Edinburgh Festival, Tap City, New Music Miami, and Festival D’Automne. A member of Either/Or, Glass Farm, Novus NY, and Fisher Ensemble, she has been a guest of many groups including Argento, Counter)induction, and the New York Philharmonic. She has recorded on New World Records, OO Discs, Innova, Naxos, and Tzadik, and was selected for Meet the Composer’s New Works for Soloist Champions project. Noted for her interdisciplinary performances, Lancaster, who also works as an actor, choreographer, dancer, and amateur furniture designer, presents solo and chamber music concerts worldwide and acts in Lee Breuer’s OBIE-winning Mabou Mines Dollhouse. Her website is Pianist YVONNE TROXLER has performed throughout the United States and Europe. She is the director of the Glass Farm Ensemble, which she founded in 2000 []. Troxler has premiered numerous works by established and emerging composers including Luigi Laveglia, Toshio Hosokawa, Elizabeth Hoffman, Peter Herbert, Wolfgang Heiniger, Rebecca Saunders, and Balz Trümpy. Her playing has earned her critical acclaim, with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung writing “…one could experience the fiery temperament of her interpretation… [Yvonne Troxler] plays with a soft touch, warm sonority and always delicate use of dynamic shading.” Troxler is also active as a composer whose original works have been performed in the United States and Europe. She has released CDs with Innova Records (In Four; Vetro), MGB (Mörike Vertonungen aus der Schweiz), and Percaso. Her newest CD, Brouhaha, with the Glass Farm Ensemble, features her own compostions written for GFE. The CD was released in August 2012 with Innova Recordings. Gapplegate Music Review writes about this new album: "Troxler shows eloquence, memorability and inspired craftsmanship in this round of chamber works. Glass Farm is a superior performance vehicle that excels in realizing the music. That's a terrific combination and this album brings lots of pleasure!" Troxler wrote the original music for the films Off Hour by Daniel Frei and Life Without Compromise by Suzan Al-Doghachi. She has received several awards including ones from the International Mozart Academy in Prague, the Pro Helvetia Council for the Arts, and the Society of Swiss Interpreters, as well as the “Swiss Culture Prize for Music.” She lives and works in New York City. YI-PING YANG, violist from Taipei, Taiwan, started musical training at age thirteen on violin and piano. She holds a Master in Music degree from Peabody

Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and an Artist Diploma from Yale University. An active musician, Ms. Yang has performed in major concert halls throughout the United States, England, Germany, Japan, Korea, China, and her birthplace, Taiwan. Since relocating to Saratoga Springs three years ago, Ms. Yang has devoted part of her time teaching local music lovers and students because she believes music is an important element in everyone's life. Ms. Yang is a regular member of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Musicians of Ma'alwyck in the capitol region, and the Klang Quartet in New York City. When she is not performing or teaching, she likes to spend time in Brant Lake, N.Y. with her two cats, Cleo and Fiona.

The NEW YORK COMPOSERS CIRCLE, now in its eleventh year, is a multifaceted artistic and educational organization of composers and performers, whose mission is to promote public awareness and appreciation of contemporary music through concerts, salons, and other events in the New York metropolitan area. For its members, the NYCC offers a variety of opportunities for testing works in progress at monthly salons open to the public, performing completed works in concert, and fostering collaboration and development, both artistic and professional. For composers who are not members, the NYCC offers the opportunity of a public performance to winners of its annual composers’ competition. For the sophisticated concertgoing public, the NYCC offers four concerts a year of members’ works, curated by a jury of members headed by prizewinning composer John Eaton. And for members of the public who have not yet been exposed to much contemporary music, the NYCC sponsors an outreach program, in which we send performers to various institutions— including high schools and senior centers—at no charge to the institution, to perform musical works of the 20th and 21st centuries. Inspired by a workshop at the American Music Center, Jacob E. Goodman founded the New York Composers Circle in the spring of 2002 as an association of composers meeting regularly to play their music for one another. It soon became apparent that we had the artistry and commitment to present our music before an audience. In May, 2003, the NYCC produced its first public concert at Saint Peter’s Church, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici along with eleven of the NYCC's original members. This well-attended concert was favorably reviewed in the New Music Connoisseur. Under the continued leadership of Debra Kaye, John de Clef Piñeiro, and Richard Brooks, and currently of Hubert Howe, the NYCC's membership has more than quintupled since its inception, and the number of its concerts has grown from one each season to its current calendar of four concert presentations during the 2012-13 season. The group continues to expand its programs. Informal readings of new pieces allow composers to "test fly" their works with some of New York's finest professional and advanced student musicians. Such events, along with our monthly music salons (now open to the public) and collaborations with other groups and institutions, support the creation and presentation of new music through the various stages of its development. In the 2004-05 season, award-winning composer Ezra Laderman joined members of the NYCC in its spring concert. In addition to its own two concerts, in March 2006 the NYCC presented a joint concert with the performing ensemble ModernWorks; during the following season we collaborated with New York University in our first concert at NYU's Frederick Loewe Theatre; in March 2010 we collaborated with the Italian “No Borders” Quartet in presenting a program of works by American and Italian composers that was performed both here and in Italy; and in September 2012 we presented a concert under the auspices of the noted Bargemusic series “Here and Now.” In the summer of 2007 the NYCC held the first of its annual composers' competitions, open only to nonmembers. The winning work in the 2012 competition, Jesse Diener-Bennett's Ninth for Two, for flute and violin, will

receive its premiere performance at our final concert of the season on June 8, 2013, at the Symphony Space Thalia. Four seasons ago the NYCC launched a new outreach initiative—the New York Composers Circle's Community Encores program. We send professional performers to institutions throughout New York City such as schools and senior centers, at no cost to the institution, with the aim of acquainting previously untapped audiences with concert music of the 20th and 21st centuries; each concert is emceed by a member of the NYCC, who introduces the performers and the music they play. The first concert in this series, featuring pianist/composer Nataliya Medvedovskaya with commentary by John de Clef Piùeiro, took place to great audience acclaim on February 24, 2009, at the Hebrew Home in Riverdale. To date, we have presented fifteen such outreach concerts, at public high schools (Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, and Hunter College H.S.) and at additional senior centers (Lenox Hill Neighborhood House at Saint Peter's Church and JASA). A recent Community Encores concert, at Stuyvesant High School, featuring soprano Sofia Dimitrova and pianist Catherine Miller, garnered a rapt audience of 350 students, whose probing questions were fielded by the performers and by composer Richard Russell, who acted as emcee. These free outreach concerts are presented under the sponsorship of NYCC contributors, and the list of schools and senior centers is expanding. See the next page for how you can help support this project, which is bringing new music to new audiences.
