Saint Patrick

The coming of Patrick to Ireland marks the greatest of Irish epochs. Of all the most momentous happenings in Irish history, this seemingly simple one had the most extraordinary, most far-reaching effect. It changed the face of the nation, and utterly changed the nation’s destiny. The coming of Patrick may be said to have had sublime effect, not on Ireland alone, but upon the world. It was a world event. Patrick first came to Ireland - as a captive - around the year 389. And be it noted, that the Irish land which he had entered as a foreigner, he left as an Irishman. For, as he was destined to give a new faith and a new soul to Ireland, Ireland had given a new faith and a new soul to him. In his seven years of slavery, the Irish tongue had become his tongue, and his spirit was the Irish Spirit. It was 43 years later he returned to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christianity. He brought the written word to Ireland, and began Ireland’s recorded history and the preserving of centuries of Gaelic culture. Saint Patrick began a monastic movement that made Ireland the center of learning in Europe. One of his famous works, his Epistle to Coroticus, a British prince, is preserved in the ancient Book of Armagh. In this intense document, Patrick first gave utterance to that cry against oppression which the agonizing heart of Ireland has echoed every year for the past 800 years. The man in whose honor we march today died March 17th, around the year 465 A.D. His remains were buried in County Down. 3

Welcome to the 40th Annual Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade again marching through the streets of Goshen. Thank you to Mayor Kyle Roddy for once again hosting and supporting the parade. The Parade Committee wishes to thank all of the businesses of Goshen that support the parade and thank you to the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. Goshen is a great place to have a parade! This year marks the 40th Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s parade, and that is no small statement. The parade itself has been marched in many different villages and towns in Orange County and over the years many individuals have worked countless hours to support and keep the parade marching all of these years. Forty years of celebrating St. Patrick, celebrating our Irish heritage and culture is a huge accomplishment. Current and past Parade Committee Officers, Directors, member organizations, Grand Marshals, Aides, marchers, bands and spectators ALL should hold their heads high, and be proud of the parade and all it represents. I would like to thank all of the Priests, clergy and staff at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They have hosted for many years a beautiful Mass in celebration of St. Patrick that begins our day of celebration each year. Thank you to all of our parade journal sponsors. Your support keeps the parade and other events going each year. Many of the journal sponsors have been longtime supporters and in many cases marchers in the parade. The Parade Committee appreciates your continued patronage. Good luck to our Grand Marshal Sister Ann Daly. She is a great representation of what it means to be Irish and to serve God and others, selflessly. The Parade Committee and all of the Directors wish her well as she leads us through the streets of Goshen! Please keep the men and women of our armed forces serving around the world in your prayers. Please pray for their safety while they serve to protect our country at home and abroad. Please also pray for our police, fireman and emergency workers in all of our towns, that they may perform their duties safely. Thank you. Jason N. Fox President Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade Committee

Meet Our 2016 Grand Marshal Sister Ann Daly PBVM A resident of Goshen for more than 50 years, Sr. Ann Daly has been an active force in the Irish-American community, local Catholic education, and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties. She has seen the tremendous growth of the Irish community and culture in Orange County, nurtured by the Irish Heritage Festival and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Her parents met in the United States, married in 1925 and lived in Astoria, Queens. Sr. Ann’s mother was from Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. Her grandmother made her mother’s wedding veil (by candlelight) – Carrickmacross lace. Her father came from Iniskeen, County Monaghan. Her parents had four children, Patricia, (deceased), Joseph, a retired priest who lives at the Vincentian Motherhouse in Philadelphia, Thomas and Sr. Ann, who was named for the Blessed Mother’s mother. She has two nephews, Patrick of Franklin Square, and Kevin, and his wife Annie, of Campbell Hall and their children Kaitlin and Kevin. In the U.S., Sr. Ann’s parents were very concerned about other Irish families who emigrated from Ireland and supported them through good times and bad. They attended the wakes of any person who came from Ireland. Sr. Ann attended St. Michael’s Academy high school in New York City, where she was introduced to the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was inspired and influenced by the example of sisters, who were her teachers, and entered their novitiate in 1958, right after high school. She took her vows and was professed in 1961. Sr. Ann attended junior college at the Novitiate and finished her bachelor’s degree at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Rockland County. St. Patrick’s Day was always a very special day in the Daly family. The day began with Mass, because for Sr. Ann and her family, St. Patrick’s Day is much more than a day for a parade, it is a Holy Day.

5

St. Patrick’s Day always included a dinner of corned beef and cabbage with tea and Irish soda bread, and Sr. Ann doesn’t remember having to attend school on St. Patrick’s Day as a child. Instead, Sr. Ann’s family marched in the New York City parade with her parents’ county, later with her high school. Each year, her grandmother sent shamrocks from Ireland, packaged with a sprinkling of water to keep them fresh, which the family wore on the lapels of their coats with great pride in the parade. Her goal, in her visits back to Ireland, said Sr. Ann, is to find where her grandmother got the shamrocks. Her first visit to Ireland was in 1972 and the many subsequent trips have been a time to reconnect with her many cousins and other family members. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is more than just a fun day, the joy and presence of so many people coming together to support the Irish culture and community was, and continues to be, very uplifting for her, said Sr. Ann. As an adult, Sr. Ann grew to appreciate more the work of St. Patrick in Ireland with and for our ancestors. Sr. Ann began teaching in 1961 at St. Michael’s Academy, spending two years there. She came to Goshen in 1963 and taught third grade for eight more years at St. John’s Elementary School in Goshen. She later became the parish’s coordinator of Religious Education. In 1981, the Hospice Planning and Educational Foundation was incorporated and in 1982 Sr. Ann became the executive director. The Hospice Foundation was certified by the New York State Department of Health in 1988 and renamed Hospice of Orange County and Sr. Ann became the Coordinator of Spiritual Care. In 1993, the foundation expanded and became Hospice of Orange and Sullivan counties. Sr. Ann now is one the Chaplains. Twice a year in Orange and Sullivan Counties, memorial services are held and sponsored by Hospice Interfaith Advisory Committee. Sr. Ann reminds family members, as well as staff and friends, that the greatest gift we can give to any person is the gift of our presence. Hospice staff and volunteers are privileged to share in the final journey with patients and families we care for and support at this most precious time in life. Sister Ann received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Hospice in 2013, for the “care, comfort and compassion” she provided. Sr. Ann was voted Irish Woman of the Year in 1998 by the Irish Heritage Festival Committee for her ongoing support and attended at the festivals throughout the years. In 2009, she was invited by a founding member of the Mary of Gael Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Orange County to be the newly created division’s chaplain, a post she continues to hold today. Congratulations to Sr. Ann on a life and career dedicated to serving others and promoting the Irish culture in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

“THE PRIDE OF OUR PEOPLE” A HISTORY OF THE MID-HUDSON ST. PATRICK’S PARADE COMMITTEE, INC. Some Background on the Parade Starting in 1976, the first Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade was held in Middletown, under the sponsorship of the Middletown Irish - American Society. In 1979, other area Irish clubs including the Middletown Irish - American Society gathered and began the MidHudson St. Patrick’s Parade Committee. The purpose of this committee is to honor the patron saint of Ireland, as well as the Archdiocese of New York, in which Orange County is located. Patrick’s mission to the Emerald Isle forever influenced its history. The parade provides a focus for the celebration of a heritage of a dynamic people and its contributions to humankind. The Parade Committee also presents Mid-Hudson Irish day every year. Irish Day brings together many things Irish, including music, dance, song, Irish history and traditions. Starting in 1976, the parade took place in Middletown. Then it moved to Monroe for two years before going to Greenwood Lake, then Goshen for two years, then back to Monroe again for two years. From 1987 through 1993, the parade took place in Chester. The parade then returned to Monroe for two years, followed by two years in Montgomery, two years in Cornwall, two years in Middletown, and one in Highland Falls. This is our fourteenth year in Goshen. An objective of the founders was to share the parade with communities around the Mid-Hudson by moving its location, and that objective has been realized. 10

St. Brendan’s G.A.A. Club 2016 Cead Mile Failte, This is an invitation to introduce your children to Gaelic Football and Hurling. We have a wonderful club here in Orange County. Our club is co-ed and we invite all kids to come have a great experience with us. Kids age groups are as follows. Under-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18. The season consists of two parts: The first is the Championship season. This runs from the first week of April through the end of June. We break for July and August as this is summer and folks are busy. The second part of the season is the League Season. This starts in September and runs through November. Most games are on Saturdays beginning at 2:00 p.m. We practice on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. at our home field at Gonzaga property, 379 Seven Springs Mountain Road (make a right just past Rambler’s Rest). We have a few home games and the remainder are away in the tri-state area such as Rockland, New Jersey, Connecticut, the Bronx, Long Island, and Westchester. We send kids to Ireland every year to compete in the Féile Péile ná nOg competition and we compete in the Continental Youth Championship here in the USA every year. This is an annual event and is held in a different state every year. This is to mention just a few of the activities we enjoy each year. Come and join us and you too will love the sport and enjoy the camaraderie and friendship our club has to offer.

Contact Aiden Mahoney at (845) 642-4060 or at www.stbrendansgfc.org. We are also on facebook. We promise you a fun time for you and your child. WELCOME. 59 64

History of the INCORPORATED Organized in New York City, May 4, 1836

The Ancient Order of Hibernians was founded in America on May 4, 1836, when a unit was established in New York City. The idea of organizations such as the Ancient Order of Hibernians was known in Ireland long before the birth of Christ. In those days the men of Ireland grouped themselves into special types of organizations called “Orders.” Among the “Orders” were: “Knights of the Golden Chain,” the “Bardic Order” and “The Knights of the Red Branch.” These ancient fraternities were powerful units long before the dawn of Christianity. When St. Patrick came to Ireland in the fifth century, these Ancient Orders embraced Christianity and built schools and monasteries. When, in the early 1500s, the long persecution of the Catholic Church and the Irish nation began, the men of Ireland naturally set up an organization that was patterned after the Ancient Orders with which they were long familiar. The Ancient Order of Hibernians was organized in 1520 in Ireland to protect the Mass, the Priest and the Church. From 1536 to 1547 it resisted the efforts of King Henry VIII to make himself instead of the Pope head of the Catholic Church. It fought the armies of Queen Elizabeth from 1560 to 1603 and defied her plans to exterminate the Irish Catholics by dungeon, fire and sword. The Ancient Order of Hibernians fought Oliver Cromwell from 1649 to 1658. The Order’s purpose of protecting the Mass, the Priest and the Church took on added significance when Cromwell by law decreed that “priests” were to be found guilty of high treason and those who sheltered

114 103

them guilty of “felony.” In 1655 Cromwell ordered “every priest found in the country to be arrested and either executed or sold as a slave to The Barbados Island.” Cromwell paid more money for the head of a priest than for the head of a man-eating wolf which at that time brought a reward of three pounds. A mounting wave of religious bigotry, discrimination, mob action and violence in the 1830s brought the Ancient Order of Hibernians to America. On Aug. 11, 1834, The Ursuline Convent in Boston was burned by a mob which called itself “Native Americans.” At the same time there arose an organization which called itself the American Protective Association. Whenever a member of this association was arrested for crimes of violence against Catholics and questioned, his stock answer was “I know nothing.” To combat these activities the AOH was established in America on May 4, 1836, for the same purpose as in Ireland: to protect the Mass, the Priest and the Church. The Division that was formed in New York City that year continues to this day. By 1840, the AOH spread to Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The reason was to counter plans of the “Native American” and “Know Nothing” organizations which were active in these regions. In May 1844, the “Know Nothing” organization physically attacked Catholics and burned the church, rectory and convents of St. Michael’s and St. Augustine’s parishes in Philadelphia. They also threatened other churches in Philadelphia. The “Hibernian Greens,” a company of Irishmen in the local military forces, were among those who, with civilian Hibernians, defended Philadelphia’s churches from attack. In April 1844, the “Know Nothing” organization advanced and prepared to burn the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Archbishop John Hughes of New York called in the Hibernians to defend it. Armed with muskets, they manned the walls while others manned swiftly erected barricades in the streets. Their action turned away the “Know Nothing” mob that had come to burn the Cathedral. The action is recalled to this day in a plaque on the front wall of St. Patrick’s and it reads as follows: “Erected to the memory of the members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of the City of New York who like their Irish fathers of old were ready to sacrifice their lives for religious freedom and the right to worship God as their conscience dictated and who in April 1844, at the call of the

115 104

Most Rev. John Hughes, first archbishop of New York City, rallied to the defense of this Cathedral when it was threatened with destruction by the forces of bigotry and intolerance.” Resolute Hibernian action such as this also turned away church-burning “Know Nothing” mobs in other sections of the country during the 1844-56 period of “Know Nothing” activity. In the Civil War, whole Divisions of the AOH volunteered and entered the armies at a time when other young were buying themselves out of the draft for one hundred dollars each. The Hibernian Divisions were active in opening the way for Catholic nuns to go on the battlefield as nurses for the sick and wounded. There was no organized nurses corps in the Civil War and the nuns took over that duty. In 1924, a monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” was erected in Washington, D.C., by the Ladies Auxiliary of the AOH on land donated by an Act of Congress. It is dedicated to the 600 nuns of twelve religious communities who volunteered to serve in the Civil War. Official records show that 306 of these nuns were born in Ireland. Today the Society is striving to unite our people in one vigorous organization with aims to perpetuate in America the spirit of our Catholic ancestors and to preserve the ideals and make known the history of the race and to guard and defend the principles of civil and religious liberty in our own heaven blessed land. Nine Famous Irishmen

In the Young Irish Disorders, in Ireland in 1848, the following nine men were captured, tried, and convicted of treason against Her Majesty, the Queen, and were sentenced to death: John Mitchell, Morris Lyene, Pat Donahue, Thomas McGee, Charles Duffy, Thomas Meagher, Richard O’Gorman, Terrence McManus, and Michael Ireland. Before passing sentence, the judge asked if there was anything that anyone wished to say. Meagher, speaking for all, said: “My Lord, this is our first offense but not our last. If you will be easy with us this once, we promise, on our word, as gentlemen, to try to do better next time. And next time — sure we won’t be fools to get caught.” Thereupon the indignant judge sentenced them all to be hanged by the neck until dead and drawn and quartered. Passionate protest from all the world forced Queen Victoria to commute the sentence to transportation for life to far wild Australia.

In 1874, word reached the astounded Queen Victoria that the Sir Charles Duffy who had been elected Prime Minister of Australia was the same Charles Duffy who had been transported 25 years before. On the Queen’s demand, the records of the rest of the transported men were revealed and this is what was uncovered: Thomas Francis Meagher — Governor of Montana Terrence McManus — Brigadier General, United States Army Patrick Donahue — Brigadier General, United States Army Richard O’Gorman — Governor General of Newfoundland Morris Lyene — Attorney General of Australia, in which office Michael Ireland succeeded him Thomas D’Arcy McGee — Member of Parliament, Montreal, Minister of Agriculture and President of Council Dominion of Canada John Mitchell — Prominent New York politician. This man was the father of John Purroy Mitchell, Mayor of New York at the outbreak of World War I.

The Star-spangled Banner Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Heaven’s Very Special Child

A meeting was held quite far from Earth. “It’s time again for another birth,” Said the angels to the Lord above. “This special child will need much love. Her progress may seem very slow, Accomplishments she may not show, And she’ll require extra care, From the folks she meets way down there. She may not run or laugh or play; Her thoughts may seem quite far away. In many ways she won’t adapt, And she’ll be known as handicapped. So let’s be careful where she’s sent; We want her life to be content. Please Lord, find parents who Will do a special job for You. They will not realize right away The leading role they’re asked to play. But with the child sent from above, Comes stronger faith and richer love, And soon they’ll know the privilege given In caring for this gift from Heaven. Their precious charge, so meek and mild Is now Heaven’s very special child.”

In the year that we honor a nun as Grand Marshal, of the Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade, I honor my nun. She was born Catherine McCaffery. But was orphaned at two years old. She was adopted by John McCarthy and his wife. She became a sister of St. Joseph and dedicated her life to Christ. She received a BS and MS from St. John’s University. During WWII, she was trained as a lab tech and was set to go to war. The war ended so she went back to teaching. At an older age, she received a government grant to study modern math at the University of Maine and received a second Master Degree. She was nominated for this grant by U.S. Senator Kenneth Keating. She taught many schools in Brooklyn and Queens. Her last 25 years at Mary Lou’s Academy in Jamaica Queens. She then retired to the St. Joseph Retirement Home in Brentwood. She died the day after her 91st birthday. You were a super Aunt Sister Cecelia Madeline.
