ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT NORTHWOOD SCHOOLS
ENTRY INTO NORTHWOOD SCHOOLS
Northwood Schools is a group of independent schools in South West London for children aged 4-16 comprising:
l 4+: Entry into Broomwood Hall Lower School Children join in the September after their 4th birthday. We are unashamedly non-selective and all children who are registered and whose parents have visited the school, will be placed in our random ballot which takes place in the Spring, 18 months before entry. Registered siblings and children of alumni and staff have a guaranteed place.
l Broomwood Hall Lower School: boys and girls aged 4-8 l Brooomwood Hall Upper School: girls aged 8-13 l Northcote Lodge: boys aged 8-13 l NorthWood Senior: boys and girls aged 11-16
The ballot: Children are placed in eight buckets by date of birth; four for girls, four for boys. Once priority places have been assigned, we know how many spaces are available in each bucket and names are drawn out at random. Any remaining names are automatically added to the waiting list. l 8 +: Entry into Broomwood Hall Upper School / Northcote Lodge Children from Broomwood Hall Lower School have priority entry, as do siblings. External entrants should register by the end of November before an assessment in the January of the proposed year of entry. Entrance is subject satisfactory test scores and a short interview with the Head.

GOVERNANCE The schools are privately owned and managed by a board of directors including the founding Principals, Sir Malcolm and Lady Colquhoun. Broomwood Hall was founded by Katharine Mears – now Lady Colquhoun – in 1984. Together with her husband, Sir Malcolm Colquhoun, Katharine has also founded Northcote Lodge (1993) the soon-to-open NorthWood Senior (2020) and helped to set-up the Northwood African Education Foundation (NAEF) in 2011 which has built and runs St George’s, a school offering an excellent education for the most disadvantaged children in Gondar, Ethiopia. Each school has a Head and senior leadership team responsible for the day to day running of the school. The Heads of each school are: l Broomwood Hall (Lower and Upper): Mrs Carole Jenkinson l Northcote Lodge: Mr Clive Smith-Langridge l NorthWood Senior: Mrs Susan Brooks
l Entry at other ages into Broomwood Hall / Northcote Lodge Occasional places do arise outside the normal entry points and we always look at individual circumstances and will consider each case on its own merits. We may ask for a recent report and will take a reference from the child’s current school. The candidate will also be invited to attend an assessment morning, afternoon or taster day in school. l 11+ entry Pupils looking for 11+ entry have two choices: l Two years at one of our single-sex prep schools, i.e. Northcote Lodge or Broomwood Hall Upper School, prior to leaving for a senior school with a 13+ entrance. OR l Immediate entry to NorthWood Senior – our co-educational day school that offers a secondary curriculum to 16 (GCSE) l 13+: entry into NorthWood Senior Whilst the main entry for NorthWood Senior is 11+, there will always be some places available for 13+ entry. Candidates from Broomwood Hall or Northcote Lodge have priority entry, as do siblings. Prospective entrants should register by the end of November before an assessment in the January of the proposed year of entry. Entrance is subject to satisfactory test scores and a short interview with the Head.
ENTRY TO NORTHWOOD SENIOR As a small school, what matters to us most is building a community in which children can thrive. Candidates must register and are then invited to an assessment morning in the January before entry. This consists of a half-day at the school comprising baseline tests and a group activity. If a pupil has already undertaken baseline tests at their current school (e.g. InCAS/CAT tests) then we would be happy to take these into consideration and not ask a pupil to take an additional exam. We also ask for a recent report and a reference from a candidate’s previous school. All prospective pupils will also be asked to meet the Head prior to the assessment morning.
