LATEST Department for Education official figures have recently been released and show that Nunnery Wood's GCSE results are well above average. Mr Powell said, "We’re delighted that Nunnery has come has come top in Worcestershire based on our students’ progress. Progress is the fairest way of judging a school, in my opinion. We say we believe that every child can succeed and these results are one indication that we are living up to our expectations; students stand more chance of thriving here than in almost any other school across the county. These kind of results come from everyone – parents, students and staff – working together and believing in themselves. It comes also from great pastoral care and enrichment – things that make students welcome and happy here. Here’s to a great year group who deserve every success in the future." The score is a measure of the progress students make between the end of primary school and the end of secondary school. It is designed to
encourage good quality teaching across a broad curriculum. The score is based on students’ performance in eight qualifications. These are English and maths, up to three subjects from the Ebacc list, and students’ three highest scores from a range of other qualifications, including GCSEs and approved non-GCSEs. English and maths are given double weighting to reflect their importance.
The Progress 8 score is calculated by comparing each student's Attainment 8 score to those nationally of other students who had the same KS2 SATs results. This is designed to measure how much progress each student has made from Year 6 to Year 11. In theory, all schools have an equal chance of getting a high Progress 8 score. A school’s Progress 8 score is usually between -1 and +1. A score of +1 means that pupils in that school achieve one grade higher
in each qualification than other similar pupils nationally. A score of -1 means they achieve one grade lower. The average Progress 8 score of all secondary schools nationally is 0. Schools with a Progress 8 score of below -0.5 are not achieving the minimum standard expected by the Government. A score of +0.5 of above shows that pupils in that school are making well above the expected level of progress. /nunnerywoodhighschool Wolfson Foundation The new Art teaching and exhibition area is due for completion in the February half-term break. What was already looking to be a fantastic facility for our students was given an extra dimension when the school heard that it had been successful in a bid for state-of-the-art ICT equipment for this new teaching area. The aim of the Wolfson Foundation is, “to support and promote excellence in education, science and medicine, heritage, humanities and the arts…” They have decided to give Nunnery a generous grant of £75,000 which will allow 3 classrooms to be fully equipped with iMac computers, cutting-edge interactive teaching screens and photography equipment. This will give every Nunnery student the chance to take their creativity in new directions, as well as helping GCSE Art and Photography students use industry standard equipment.
The new block will have an official opening in the Summer Term by which time the large exhibition area should be packed with student work.
IN the final week of the summer term students in years 7, 8 and 9 participate in two days of free choice activities. The aim is to extend learning and opportunities beyond the normal classroom environment. Students choose from a wide choice of trips both in and out of school. There are over 25 activities. We have ensured that there are activities to appeal to every budget and every interest. No one will be left behind! The activities this year are more exciting and varied than ever and the week promises to be a great hit with everyone and a fantastic way to end the school year. These include
mountain biking, trampolining, The Space Centre, AirHop, a day at the seaside, computing, Workshop skills, Drayton Manor, West Midlands Safari Park, textiles, pottery, photography and many more. Teachers are currently planning the activities which will be launched to students very soon. We have launched early so that parents and carers can plan ahead if they want to opt for activities with financial cost.
League Tables I hope you feel as parents that the school wants more for your child than just good examination results. Through trips, assemblies, SMSC days and good teaching, we want to empower your child to be strong, confident and ambitious in their life – and to support you in giving them a strong moral code. However, it would be naïve to pretend that examination results don’t play a huge part in opening doors to our students’ futures. The School Reward System - ePraise EPRAISE is a digital system that allows rewards to be allocated, tracked and reported on. All students will work to a points system. Milestone certificates are awarded in year team leader assemblies as they are achieved through an accumulation of the number of points a student has received. Nunnery Launches Student STEM Ambassadors! PERHAPS you have seen the term before, or maybe STEM is brand new to you. STEM is not new, but it is gaining a lot of attention in recent years. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM education is far more than just sticking those subject titles together; it is a philosophy of education that embraces teaching skills. Rarely does a job require only one skill set; jobs in the real world are interdisciplinary. Picture an architect; they use science, mathematics, engineering and technology to design complex buildings.
At Nunnery Wood High School, we want our students to develop diverse skills sets and have a passion for exploration and growth. Learn how to think critically, evaluate information, apply knowledge, research and skills to problem solve. STEM embraces these skills as well as
the 4 C’s: Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Communication.
Therefore along with a team of STEM teachers and Miss Lott our new STEM ambassador students will be responsible for developing STEM across the school. If you would like to get more involved in STEM keep an eye on the notices for future events, speak to your STEM teachers or Mrs Gwynne in the Careers office, or pop see Miss Lott in SC1. We will also be launching a STEM Club and STEM Competition to design a Nunnery Wood STEM logo – keep an eye on the daily notices for updates!

STUDENTS from Nunnery Wood High School have taken part in this year’s BP Ultimate STEM Challenge: Wearable Tech. Students nationwide have been learning about wearable technology and were challenged to use their imagination and develop a new device that could improve lives in the future. Entries from Toby Alexander 9.4, Abel Linas 9.6, Isaac Perks 8.4, Thomas Rhodes 8.4 and Matthew Blaikie 7.1 have submitted their ideas and are awaiting the results from the judging panel. The judges will select two entries from primary and secondary schools and invite those shortlisted to an all-expenses paid, exciting Hack-

Decision Time for Year 9
YEAR 9 students are currently in the process of taking their GCSE options. This is a very important time in their school career and a very big decision to take. Students have been allocated to different pathways to help guide them in their choices. Within lessons teachers have taken time to explain the options to students and then an options evening was held for students and their parents to attend. the evening was extremely busy, students and their parents were able to walk around the hall and the studio where each subject area exhibited information on the courses on offer. Teachers were on hand to explain the courses available and to answer questions about the courses, exams, topics and careers links. After the evening, all students have a one to one interview with a senior member of staff to ensure that the students have correctly selected subjects and they have considered their choices carefully. this was an opportunity to check that they have made the correct decisions and help and guidance is on hand for any who were undecided or who had particular career or future training specific needs or interests. Don’t forget that our careers officer, Mrs Gwynne, is available to all students in all year groups for advice. Her office is located next to the library. Feel free to pop by at any time. The library also holds information on colleges, universities and careers.

Eco Club - Going Green THE environment is an issue that is very important to us at Nunnery Wood. Staff have been working with students to promote environmental issues in school. Part of student parliament is now responsible for all things eco and an eco club has been set up. The projects that are currently underway involve all students and staff in school and encourage us all to do our bit for the environment. Many students have expressed
concerns about climate change and eco issues and so this has enabled them to take action to make a difference.

The Big Bottle Collection SINCE the beginning of January students across the schools have been collecting two litre plastic bottles. These have all been washed and are being filled with unrecyclable plastic to create eco bricks.

The competition between forms is heating up, with many students collecting plastic at lunch or arriving at school with contents for their bottles. Herb Planters OUR herb and compost delivery arrived early January from St. Peters Garden Centre ready to be planted by the Eco club! Students keenly planted up the herbs into pots and planters donated from staff around the school. We are hoping to use our herbs in both our nutrition lessons and in the school canteen.

Standing Together - Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 HOLOCAUST Memorial Day on 27th January provided an opportunity for students to explore issues relating the Holocaust and examples of genocides including Armenia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year was “Stand Together “ In history lessons all Key Stage Three students investigated the Holocaust and Genocide.
Students in history and EP lessons were also able to watch a live web cast of a Holocaust survivor speaking about her experiences of being in Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Students in 9X1 history class had already been studying genocide and worked in groups to plan and prepare lessons for Year 7 and 8 students to learn about Holocaust Memorial Day. The class worked in groups and presented their ideas. The results were impressive, rather than taking one whole lesson, bits from several were selected to be delivered to the classes. Y10 GCSE Dancers performed some very moving and creative work, which was inspired by Holocaust Memorable Day 2020. The emotional piece is about the relationships between an Eastern European Family who are living in fear of what lies outside their front door. Miss Speechley said that, “It is vitally important that we ensure our students have an understanding of genocides that have taken place throughout history and continue to happen, which is why we have placed a big emphasis on Holocaust Memorial Day. It is important that misconceptions are challenged and that students are able to explore these issues fully.”
educating young people about the horrors of the holocaust as well as the dangers of intolerance and discrimination and she also spoke of the growing need that we have, as a society, to stand up against bullies and ensure that evil does not have a place in our lives. As the result of her relentless charity and her inspirational words, she was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honors List by the Queen and it only goes to show how powerful the words that she spoke were and the influence that she had on everyone who hears her story and the message that she has to tell.
Lucy Evans and James Thatcher attended a commemoration ceremony at the Guild Hall in Worcester. The 27th of January marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Concentration Camp, a place that bore witness some of the worst mass killings of the Holocaust. No one knows exactly how many innocent people were slaughtered in the camp, but it is estimated to be around 1.1 million people died with a total of 1.3 million people being sent there. But there were still some survivors, one of which was present at the Guildhall in Worcester at a commemoration event to honor those who dies and to tell her story to the county. Mindu Hornick MBE was sent to AuschwitzBirkenau at the age of 12 alongside her older sister and her mother. She was separated from her mother as soon as they entered the camp and she was left with her sister to try and survive the atrocities that would lie ahead of them. She
spoke of her time in the camp. Of the atrocious conditions in her, and hundreds of others, sleeping quarters. Of the hard and gruelling work they were forced to endure sorting through the belongings of the bodies that had become victims to the holocaust. And also of the happiness and relief she felt when the camp was liberated by troops. Her life had been a hard one. After the camp was liberated she was sent to some remaining family in Prague, but she was not out of harm’s way as she was again forced to evacuate when the Russians invaded after the war. She then moved in with family in Birmingham where she has stayed since. Despite the hardship and utter terror she had gone through during her life, she was undeterred to fight for her rights and to protect others. She has spent the last few decades
THIS term gave students in different year groups the opportunity to explore a range of important topics that are relevant to their ability to lead a fulfilling and active life in the wider community, both now and in the future. Each year group had a different theme. Year 7 students learned about healthy and active lifestyles. Part of this included getting outside and trying orienteering. Year 8 focussed on business and enterprise. Students were challenged to plan, design and pitch a business idea to the rest of their year group. Well known company Air Products ran this enterprise which is part of a national programme. Groups of students designed and presented a product made of recycled, metal canisters. The product had to be practical, popular and eco-friendly. Students were led through how to market their idea and were given strict criteria. They had to consider the marketing strategy, an advert as well as a social media campaign. Sophie Cockeram said “My product was a walking stick for the blind. We thought of this idea because it’s charitable as we would be providing aids for the blind.” There were many other great ideas being produced in the hall and the concentration levels were high. Miss Speechley who judged the presentations along with Mr Haywood said, “The ideas that the students presented were superb! Imaginative, innovative and creative. It was extremely difficult to decide upon a winner, but only one team from Nunnery Wood could go through to a national competition against other schools.” The winning team was FIND OUT We will keep you updated on how they do in the next stage of the competition. Year 9 students focussed on options and careers. They had sessions to find out about their options
process and what each subject involved. They had the chance to learn about which subjects were suited to different careers and what they could do post 16 with different GCSEs. Year 10 students tackled the issues of body image, gambling and abuse . This included a theatre company performing to them to highlight how people can become exploited and how to try to prevent this from happening. Year 11 students also looked at gambling and attitudes towards sex. Students in all year groups found the day to be interesting and useful and gained valuable knowledge and understanding. What is SMSC? SMSC is an important part of the curriculum. It is delivered through subject areas but also in special days set aside just for SMSC. Spiritual Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; useimagination and creativity; reflect. Moral Recognise right and wrong; respect the law;
understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views. Social Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' ofdemocracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance. Cultural Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate therole of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
This is an important message for our society. With growing levels of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and homophobia in our society, we need to come together and unite against intolerance and fight for goodness and equality.

Tea and Cake in the Library! On the first Wednesday back after the Christmas holiday, ‘top form’ readers from across KS4 were invited to the Library to enjoy tea and cake with the Librarians. Out came the best china as students (and Librarians) had a lovely time drinking tea (or hot chocolate) and eating cupcakes.

Harry Potter Book Night 2020
LIBRARY club is so much fun! Each week the club does different activities, or sometimes just take the time to read. . It’s a really good way to get people reading, and is clearly popular. Many students from all year groups attend. Why not come along? It makes people enthusiastic about reading. It’s on a Wednesday at lunchtime. You bring your lunch with you, make new friends and have fun. Hope to see you there!
School Survey to Hear Student Voice
NUNNERY Wood High School celebrated Harry Potter Book Night in true ‘wizarding’ style by holding a Harry Potter themed Library Club. The Library was transformed into Hogwarts with floating candles, owl mail, our very own sorting hat and students got in to character by bringing in their own robes and wands. The Triwizard Tournament from The Goblet of Fire was the theme for this year’s celebration. Students were able to choose from a selection of fun activities; completing wizarding word searches, colouring ‘House’ bookmarks and bedroom door hangers. Some students were happy to read one of the fabulous books from the J. K. Rowling’s magical series or sat quietly to watch round one of the Triwizard Tournament on DVD. Everyone enjoyed being immersed in the magical world, however, the spell was broken when the bell rang for PM Registration. Special thanks to all those students who brought along their costumes from home. The Library
truly felt like Hogwarts!
NUNNERY Wood Library Club has, in the past, participated in the Worcestershire Teen Book Award which was organised by the Worcestershire Schools’ Library Service. However, since SLS closed, we feel that our students are really missing out on following a local reading award so we’ve decided to hold one of our own…the NWHS Teen Book Award! Thirty fiction books (all published during 2019) were selected from our resources covering different genres and reading abilities. These books were then used for ‘speed dating’ during a recent Library Club session. The books were divided equally between five numbered tables, with groups of up to six
students sitting at each. Their challenge was to look at each book and rate it to ultimately find their top six favourites. Each session lasted for five minutes, before a timer sounded, indicating it was time to move to the next table. After half an hour of reading, judging and making notes, students then selected their favourite top six titles.

The questions asked students what they think of all aspects of school life in order for the student voice to really be heard. NWHS Teen Book Award…and Speed Dating!
Stage is Set for Lydia LYDIA Dimmock, Year 10, auditioned last summer to participate at a Performing Arts School in London and she was awarded a half scholarship. This is an exceptional achievement and a fantastic opportunity for Lydia. Lydia attended the school during the Christmas term of 2019 and she will go again during the Summer term this year. Lydia said, “It’s absolutely brilliant. It’s exciting to be in London and I get to work with industry professionals. I have had the opportunity to sing in front of Natalie May Paris who is currently performing in the musical, ‘6’. I have also had workshops with Nathanial Morrison who is performing in the musical ‘Waitress’ and Scott Harrison who is a BBC vocal coach.”
This reading award will be rolled out initially through Library Club and then ultimately to the whole school when students will be able to vote for their favourite title via the portal.
TALENTED dancer, Jessica Rich, took part in the Redditch And District Dance Festival on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January. Jessica competed in the dance festival, working hard to compete in various sections of the competition. Jessica gained 3 golds, 1 silver, a bronze medal and a trophy. She performed 10 dances in total.

Nunnery Wood Pupils Beta Tests Games for Public Health England
In 2019, a collaboration was developed between Game Doctor Ltd (industry), Public Health England (healthcare) and Gloucestershire College (education) to develop a series of games on important public health topics for young people. The games are intended to educate young people on vaccinations and air pollution and will be used at science festivals, events and be installed in Public Health England’s new Arrival Zone at Harlow. Nunnery Wood was chosen to test the air pollution game due to our reputation in Computing and IMedia within the UK. Thirteen of our pupils from Computing Club were the first in the Country to play Attack of Toxins a 2D game that educates on how air pollution damages the lungs. Players play as
air pollutant and must invade lungs, avoiding defence cells and antioxidants in the lung. Once they had played the game pupils gave online feedback on the game so that it can be improved before launch . This is one of the many that the Department are engaged in with both Universities, Government Agencies, and National Cyber Security Centres.

Valentine's Kindness • • • • YEAR 9 students organised a Valentine’s Day card service to raise money for their selected charity ‘Ava's Angels’ Students designed, produced and sold Valentine's Day cards. The money raised was donated to Ava's Angels. For an additional charge of 20p the cards were also delivered on Valentine's Day. The idea was to make someone smile on Valentine's Day for a variety of reasons and not just the traditional sense of Valentine's cards. They decided that reasons to send cards could include:

This Valentine's Day was about spreading positivity and kindness, making people feel happy whilst raising money for this worthy charity. Ava's Angels is a charity that provided relief of sickness and suffering among children being cared for in hospital by providing items, services and emotional support for families to enable them to visit, spend quality time with and care for such children.
Prom Lending Scheme Gets Underway THE Year 11 school prom is a really exciting time for students and marks the end of their time at high school. With it can come the expense of outfits and accessories. A local mum from Pershore has begun an initiative to help students and parents keep the cost of going to the school prom affordable. There will be an evening at Pershore High School where students from schools across the county can come along to try on dresses/suits/ book hair/makeup and book out the dresses/ suits for prom, free of charge. #This Girl Can IN March we will be getting involved in the national #ThisGirlCan campaign. This encourages girls and women to get active. This Girl Can is funded by The National Lottery. It promotes the ideas that believes that there is no “right” way to get active. So we will be jiggling, kicking, lifting, stretching, dancing, sprinting our way through this campaign. It is a sad fact that many girls and women do not regularly take part in exercise at all outside of PE lessons at school. Body image and fear of what they will look like and wear are all reasons given for not taking part.

What’s next for Labour? Louis Foreman YEAR 9
WARNING – Contains Opinion! Labour has received its worst result in a General Election since 1935, with the Conservatives (despite frequent blunders during the campaign) storming to victory with a 74 seat majority, smashing Labour’s ‘Red Wall’. The left has blamed the Peoples’ Vote campaign and their demand for second referendum (adopted as party policy at the 2019 conference) for alienating ‘Red Wall’ seats that vote overwhelmingly to leave. The centrists (often the ones backing a second referendum) has blamed Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and the party’s radical manifesto for the stunning defeat; I find their argument falls flat when the polling shows that things like renationalisation, a National Education Service, and a Green Industrial Revolution are very popular amongst all demographics and regions. Labour became one of the two main parties in the early 20th century, replacing the Liberals (now the Liberal Democrats), but now like never before that position in doubt; with social
democratic parties across Europe failing, creating voids then filled by the far-right (such as Lega in Italy) or by left-wing populists (such as Syriza in Greece and Podemos in Spain), will the Labour party be able to hang on? The next leader (who will lead the party at the 2024 election, when current Year 9, 10, and 11 will be eligible to vote) could make the difference between victory and oblivion. Jeremy Corbyn is on his way out, but will his politics leave with him? Shadow Business Secretary, Rebecca Long-Bailey, a frontrunner for the leadership and Corbyn loyalist has declared she is committed to keeping Labour socialist. In an article for the left-wing Tribune magazine she writes, “we need a leader that can be trusted with our socialist agenda. A leader who is totally committed to the policies and has the political backbone to defend them. We need a proud socialist to lead the Labour Party, driven by their principles and an unwavering determination to see democratic socialism in our lifetime.” With party chairman and former General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, Ian Lavery, not standing for the leadership, the left has to back Long-Bailey to keep hold of the leadership.
Shadow Brexit Secretary, Sir Keir Starmer, is currently leading in the opinion polls; although seen as a centrist in the party, his pitch affirms his commitment to keep the party left (whether the membership will believe this, especially after his involvement in the 2016 failed coup against Corbyn by Labour MPs, is another matter). A video produced for his leadership campaign puts his fighting for workers’ rights as a barrister front and centre, papering over his record as Director of Public Prosecutions. Born to a working class family but now representing an affluent London constituency, it is yet to be seen if he can connect with those in the North and Midlands that Labour so desperately needs in order to win an election ever again. The other contenders able to gain enough nominations from their fellow MPs are: Lisa Nandy (MP for Wigan and passionate advocate for the interests of towns), Jess Phillips (MP for Birmingham Yardley, committed feminist, and frequent critic of the Corbyn leadership), and Emily Thornberry (MP for Islington South, Shadow Foreign Secretary, and opponent of Brexit). It is yet to be seen if they are able to gain grassroots support among Labour and af-
filiated trade union members. Meanwhile in the race for Deputy Leader, created following the resignation of Tom Watson (who often had a strained relationship with Corbyn and was credited with keeping defections to the minimum after the creation of Change UK), a clear frontrunner and almost certain winner has been found in the MP for Ashton-underLyme and Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayner, receiving 88 nominations from MPs and being seen as the running mate to her flatmate, Rebecca Long-Bailey. The other contenders are Rosena Allin-Khan (MP for Tooting and Shadow Sports Minister), Richard Burgon (MP for Leeds East and Shadow Justice Secretary), Dawn Butler (MP for Brent North and Shadow Equalities Minister), and Ian Murray (Labour’s only MP in Scotland). Although we can’t be certain of who will be the next Leader and Deputy Leader, we can be certain that it will decide the future of the Labour party.

Natural History Museum Trip Carys Slimming YEAR 10
ON the 9th January Year 8 had the opportunity to visit the Natural History Museum in London. It was an early start, but the trip was fully booked within days. Once we got to London, everyone was split into two groups, and went our separate ways. First, we went to the earthquake section, where we filled out a worksheet. There was an earthquake simulator, and examples of different rock types. We learnt about rivers, erosion, and sediment as well.
Then, after a quick lunch, we got back to exploring the museum. We were first taken to the dinosaur section. We looked at their sizes, shapes and even fossils. Then, we went to the human biology section as well as the mammal section, the sea creatures section, and of course, the gift shop.
It was a great trip, which was full of interesting facts and amazing artefacts. Thank you to the Geography department for running this trip, which I hope the Year 8 next year will be able to experience!
Year 10 Birmingham Trip
YEAR 10 GCSE Geography students headed out of school for their field trip that is a compulsory part of the course. They visited three different locations and completed a variety of surveys. They had to speak to local people as well as complete other written tasks. They went to Birmingham city centre as well as Sparkbrook and Bournville in order to compare population, jobs, facilities and housing. They all managed to collect the data that they needed for their course, which they will use to in one section of their final GCSE exam.

A traditional English pancake is very thin and is served immediately. Golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar are traditional toppings for pancakes, but anything can be added, sweet or savoury.American pancakes are thicker and often served with maple syrup. SHROVE Tuesday or Pancake Day falls on 25th February this year. This day is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter and was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession at church. A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the â€œPancake Bellâ€? and is still rung today. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. I Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before starting a fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients. People often give up something for
Ingrediants 100g plain flour 2 eggs 300ml semi-skimmed milk 1 tbsp sunflower oil or vegetable, plus extra for frying pinch salt Put 100g plain flour and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Method Make a well in the centre and crack 2 eggs into the middle. Pour in about 50ml from the 300ml of semiskimmed milk and 1 tbsp sunflower oil then start whisking from the centre, gradually drawing the flour into the eggs, milk and oil. Once all the flour is incorporated, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little more milk if it is too stiff to beat.

Heat the pan over a moderate heat, then wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around for a thin and even layer. Quickly pour any excess batter into the mixing bowl, return the pan to the heat. Leave to cook, undisturbed, for about 30 secs. If the pan is the right temperature, the pancake should turn golden underneath after about 30 secs and will be ready to turn.
Hold the pan handle, ease a palette knife under the pancake, then quickly lift and flip it over. Make sure the pancake is lying flat against the base of the pan with no folds, then cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate. Continue with the rest of the batter, serving them as you cook or stack onto a plate. You can freeze the pancakes for 1 month, wrapped in cling film or make them up to a day ahead.

Industrial Cadets at Mazak UK DURING January, a group of Year 10 students from Nunnery Wood High school attended the Industrial Cadets programme at engineering firm, Mazak. Students had to apply to take part and the successful applicants were then able to take part in the programme. There were a very limited number of places available and so a good application was really important. Students had a very realistic experience of the world of work, completing approximately 30hrs of work from 8:30 every morning until 4pm. When students arrived on their first day, they received some information about what they would be doing during the week. They were also given a proper uniform. When they were all kitted out, they went on a factory tour. The students listened to a talk about some of the machines produced at Mazak and what exactly they did. It was a real insight into the world of engineering. Many everyday items have been produced on a Mazak machine; they included the medical sector, aerospace sector and oil & gas sector.
Students were divided into groups and were set to work with different taks to do. There were a range of departments and tasks. These included working with sheet metal, electrical sub assembly and turrets, spindles and ball screws. An exciting part of the week was actually producing items from each department, which gave students the chance to really get hands on. Throughout the week the students worked on a presentation which was delivered on the last day. This was a big event as there are managers from Mazak watching as well as some teachers and parents. The presentation explained all that the group had learnt throughout the week and how it relates to the original information which they began the week with. The students were well looked after by two members of Mazak staff who guided them through the week. There was also time to speak to and learn from apprentices who are already at the company. This was a useful way to find out what it is actually like to be an apprentice. Imy has used varied sources of inspiration in her work - we are particularly impressed with her drawings of Billy Eilish which have been completed for the music element of Imy's Identity project. His followers think he can perform miracles and replace god for him. His intention is to get many people’s attention and then manipulate them from their beliefs telling them they have studied wrong. Anyone who tries to stop him will eventually be dealt with. The followers are then driven to starve for many days on end. Recently I have been introduced to a Netflix programme called Atypical. The show follows a teenage boy with autism and his everyday life along with his family and relationship matters including love, friends and bullies in school.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came out on the 16th November 2018 and was a huge hit to both Harry Potter fans and people who have only heard of it. This film is set in 1927 and is about a wizard called Newt Scamander who came to New York to set a magical creature free. Along the way he met lots of friends but also lots of enemies that try to kill and attack the weak. People who like magic and danger
His life is crazy, amusing, but every so often, we take a peek at what its really like to be a teenager with autism. These moments are touching, enlightening and creates a better awareness of somebody you may know with autism and autism itself. This show would definitely be relatable to people with autism and maybe even teach them a few things. I feel that it would definitely teach people who do not have autism

This book is written by Greta Thumberg who is a 15 year- old climate activist from Sweden striking off school to persuade people with power in the government to do something about climate change. This book has both her writing for the book and her speeches. I recommend this book to people who don’t know very much about both her and also climate change because it explains what she is doing and what she wants to happen. The author of this book started the
school strikes and inspired many students across the world to do the same. Even though this book is quite short it is very interesting and even people who know lots about her will love it and find it very intriguing.

As she grows up she starts to love fossicking even though being a scientist back in those days was something which people looked down on. Mary didn’t want to get married and have children despite how much everyone said she will. She wanted to discover how animals moved and how their joints worked. When she finds the bones of dinosaurs no one believed he because she is a woman. This book was a true story and she goes on to discover three dinosaurs proving despite a woman she can be a scientist. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy science and true stories.
Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker - The newest and final film is both the best and the most baffling, which is why it isn’t higher on this list. They basically took The Last Jedi and said that didn’t happen, which doesn’t help its case, but overall it is a great inclusion in the Skywalker saga and is a brilliant way to conclude the trilogy and saga.
The Poison Artist
Maryam Khan YEAR 8 The Poison Artist written by Jonathan Moore is a thrilling book about a man who met a woman when he was younger. As his life progresses he forgets entirely about his past as his memory has been erased, he finds himself thrown back to his childhood unknowingly until…. He visits the local gallery and sees the photo of this woman who died 100 years ago he feels this image is very familiar but doesn’t know where he’s seen this. He sees this woman at a bar and then invites her to his house but she keeps disappearing mysteriously! He ends up being arrested for murder and this mysterious woman helps him escape from the authorities and then, as usual disappears without a trace, only leaving a note saying ‘Soon Caleb. I will come back soon.’ This book is full of mystery and horror.
Episode 2: The Attack of the Clones - This film is appallingly bad for an action space adventure; it just revolves around intergalactic politics which would be fine if it wasn’t a Star Wars film. Episode 8: The Last Jedi - This is probably the most controversial film in the franchise and it managed to split the fan base in two, either you love it or you hate it. I, as you can tell, love it. It looks stunning and changes expectations a lot, but that isn’t a bad thing. All together I think that it is one of the best Star Wars films to date. Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back - Now before you shoot me I can respect that most people put this film as the best, which for a while I did to, but since 2015 my thoughts changed. This is still a masterpiece, however, and I still regard it as so.
The Assassin’s Blade
Maryam Khan YEAR 8
Main character, Celaena Sardothien is an assassin raised by Arobynn Hamel the king of the assassins. Haunted by her past Celaena must fight the memories in order to achieve the impossible. Being a slave with blood oaths means following orders and if one foot is out of line then there will be severe consequences. But this also means losing what she loves the most. Finding out the missing pieces to her past is crushing and life changing decisions are made but turning from a young assassin to a beautiful queen, some people are bound to be unsure and Celaena is bound to rid them. I really love this series as the storyline is continuously surprising me as a reader. I would recommend this to peo-
ple of 14-16 years of age. My favorite character is Celaena and Aedion who are both in line for two different thrones but of the same family, they must fight their way to the throne and be extremely cautious of their potential allies and court room.
Dante’s Inferno Sophie Cockeram YEAR 7
Written in the 1320, this is the horrifying tale of Dante Alighieri’s journey through hell. He describes each layer or ‘ring’ of hell (upper and lower) until you reached the centre of the earth. Each ring punishes those who have sinned in life in more and more excruciating ways. Although it is basically one long poem it does not rhyme. However, it does in Italian as this is
the language it was originally written in. Dante Alighieri has written a few other books like these, such as: Dante’s Paradiso and the Limitations Modern Criticism as well as Dante: The Divine Comedy.
Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Similar to the above, this film is incredibly slow and boring, very awfully written and the dialogue is terrible. Not to mention Jar Jar bloody Binks the epitome of dreadfulness. Rogue one: A Star Wars story - This film was the first of the Disney spinoffs and it was Okay. The last half, however, was brilliant; it’s just a shame to see the first half being as bad as it is. But at least it isn’t space politics or jar jar Binks. Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith - The last fifteen minutes, similarly to Rogue One, is brilliant and consists of some of the greatest scenes in Star Wars history, but the other 2 hours fall under the same tragic fate of the other prequels bad writing and stupid random irrelevant stuff. Solo: A Star Wars Story - This film is fun and I don’t care if you guys don’t like it. It’s exactly what you want to see in a Star Wars film, a fun action packed space heist. What more could you want? Episode 6: Return of the Jedi - The weakest of the originals still has its highlights and is regarded as a masterpiece. It has great ideas and a well thought out plot.
Episode 4: A New Hope - This film is still awesome to this day, it may have come out in 1977 but the effects are still groundbreaking and are better than a lot of features today. Episode 7: The Force Awakens - This film might be a bit bias as I experienced the hype, but I think this truly embodies what it means to be a Star Wars film. It has action, comedy and of course war in the stars. Which surprisingly you don’t get in a lot of the films.

The Great Outdoors! A GROUP of adventurous students from Years 8, 9 and 10 students spent the last week of term (before Christmas) in Llanrug in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, on the annual outdoor activities week. The weather was wet and there was a lot of mud, but that did not stop them from having an amazing time. The students worked in small groups to try their hand at a range of different outdoor activities. These included: water rafting on the lake, Winter mountain day, evening walk to Castle Beaumaris, slate mining, orienteering, zipline, water rafting on the Menai Straits (the sea), gorge walking/ scrambling, obstacle course and abseiling. There was also rock climbing. The students were kept busy and active all day each day. The activities really pushed students to their limits to achieve more than they thought they could. Everyone tried all of the activities and supported each other to do so. It was a real team effort. The food was also fantastic! Mr Russell, who organised the trip, which runs each year said, “ It’s amazing! Letters are now available via the Parental Portal for this year’s trip, which is now proving very popular.” There are also opportunities throughout the year to be involved in outdoor activities through the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and with the PE department who organise a range of sports clubs each week.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme AT Nunnery Wood, students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DofE). This has been offered for many years and continues to grow and attract a large number of students as well as staff. Miss Humphries, Mrs Westhead, Miss Gonzalez, Miss Ledbury, Miss Young and Mrs Scoby are all involved in running the award. What is the DofE? A life-changing experience. A fun time with friends. An opportunity to discover new interests and talents. A tool to develop essential skills for life and work. A recognised mark of achievement; respected by employers. The DofE is many things to many people, supporting generations to successfully navigate adult life. 14-24 year-olds can do a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, train-
ing for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.
Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries. Through a DofE programme young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive, enhancing CVs and uni and job applications. Top employers recognise the work-ready skills Award holders bring to their business. The DofE licenses organisations that work with young people to run DofE programmes, such as schools, colleges, youth groups and clubs. Through the Licensed Organisation (LO) young people (or their parents / carers) pay for a Participation Place and are supported by Leaders who support them through their programmes, helping them to choose their activities, set their objectives and achieve their Award.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a registered charity, funded by donations, Participation Places and licences. The charity works with LOs across the UK to increase opportunities for young people to gain the benefits of doing their DofE. There are three levels of programme you can do which, when you’ve successfully completed them, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The main differences between them are the minimum length of time it takes to complete them, how challenging it is and the minimum age you can start. Activities for each DofE section take a minimum of one hour a week over a set period of time, so they can be fitted in around academic study, hobbies and social lives. Development and regular progress must be shown and all activities must be completed by the participant’s 25th birthday. Depending on your age, you are free to start at any level but most people prefer to start at Bronze and work upwards.

Over Easter students will be travelling to Italy to explore the culture, geography and cuisine of the country. In May, Year 9 and 10 students are heading to Berlin to learn about Weimar and Nazi Germany and the Cold War to support their studies in class. We offer an extensive programme of overseas trips to all students at Nunnery Wood. However, we also ensure that there are extensive opportunities for free and low cost trips and visits as well as a range of speakers and performances that come into school to enhance the curriculum.

Molly Phillips, Anisa Westbury, Lydia Dimmock, Georgia Satchwell, Molly Tyrell, Adam Bourke, Olivia Lee, Haydn Jenkins, Alfie Thompson, Anjes van der Kleijn and Kaitlyn Norwood will be among the cast of 70 youngsters at Worcester’s Swan Theatre for the sixperformance show from Tuesday, August 4 to Saturday, August 8. Based on the story from the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, this hilarious musical is set in a mythical ‘once upon a time’ sort of land and turns the world of fairy tales upside down.

I am currently studying A-levels at King Edwards VI College, Stourbridge, as well as training in contemporary dance in Birmingham. IN the glorious surroundings of The Birmingham Symphony Hall, a group Year 10 students had the pleasure of listening to a collection of poems read by the poets which they themselves have been studying in the lead up to their GCSE exams. The day was full of well-known poets such as Gillian Clark, Carol Ann Duffy as well as Owen Sheers and Daljit Nagra. The day gave students the opportunity to hear poets share their poems and the stories behind the poetry, giving students an insider’s view into the inspiration for some of the poems that they have to study for their examinations in May. Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage was also in attendance, sharing his comical, honest and yet thought provoking poems with the crowd as well as his inspiration behind why he became a poet and the important job that it serves to society.
As part of the course, students do need to tackle unseen poetry and this element was catered for on the day with a talk from Examiner Peter Buckroyd, who gave advice on how to approach these poems in the exam. The day came to a close with the final poet John Agard entering the stage to a standing ovation and the eruption of applause. Agard recited his famous poems, ‘Checking Out Me History’ and ‘Half Caste’ to the 2000 students who had been
waiting in anticipation for his arrival all day as well as sharing his love for language and how he sees it as his ally.
Dance Careers Trip
Overall it was a truly inspiring day for all, with fantastic opportunities for Nunnery Wood students to experience and hear poetry read aloud and how different it is to reading it from a page.
YEAR 9 Dance Careers trip last Friday. The Dance careers event was held at Wolverhampton University. It’s a unique opportunity for young people interested in pursuing Dance as an examination subject, to find out about Post 16 and Post 18 Higher Education Career routes, to meet first hand a range of people employed in the Dance Industry and to participate in a variety of workshops led by Colleges, Universities, the Centre for Advance Training (CAT), and industry professionals. Our year 9s were amazing and were complimented by the professional artists delivery the workshops on their high ability and enthusiasm!

Young Voices Miss Harper MUSIC TEACHER
IT was another year of Young Voices and an excited coach of KS3 students made their way to Resorts World Arena in Birmingham on Tuesday 28th January. It certainly blew the January grey skies away and reminds me why I’m now in my sixth year of either running or attending this trip. The power of a large group of students singing is palpable. As Jo Brighouse, writing for the TES, after attending a Young Voices concert for the first time this year reports, “What’s not to like about collective singing? It can give confidence to troubled pupils, and it brings communities together”. Our students always have a wonderful time and feel a part
of something bigger than themselves; there is a real sense of “belonging “to the Young Voices choir. It’s always wonderful for our students to work with a professional choral conductor and be inspired by the note perfect live band who always sound amazing. Although aimed at primary schools, our KS3 students still enjoy following “Andy” with his Urban Strides dance group in the dance moves, and this year all the adults enjoyed watching Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet) revving up the students in the Queen medley. We were also the first coach out of the carpark and back to school by 9.30pm. Result! A huge thank you to all the staff and students who year on year help to make the trip such a success.
Community Festivities IN the final week of last term, after the Nunnery News had gone to press, we held our annual party for local OAPs. This year we had a great turn out from local senior citizens who joined us for this popular event. They were entertained by the school choir who gave a hearty rendition of classical carols as well as popular seasonal tunes. Many of the guests were joining in and singing along.

During the afternoon, refreshments were served by Year 10 students who offered a range of beverages and seasonal nibbles to the guests, as well as an opportunity for a chat. Entertainment continued with a dance presentation from several dance groups who performed impressive pieces which delighted the audience. Guests were also treated to the much anticipated bingo and raffle. No christmas party would be complete without a visit from Father Christmas

ON the 17th December, Nunnery Wood High School held their traditional Christmas Concert in the Main Hall with music performed by students in Voices, Brass Band and Orchestra. Soloists included Alfie Thompson, Isobel Webb and Rebecca Troughton. The choir, conducted by Miss Harper and Miss Davis, sang well known pieces such as ‘Mary did You Know’, ‘Drummer boy’, ‘O Holy Night’ and Carol of the Bells’ and the string group, led by Mr. Poll, played a beautiful arrangement of ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’. The programme was chosen to evoke the Christmas spirit, and readings were given by several students and staff, telling the Christmas story. Mr. Powell praised the students for their excellent efforts at the close of the evening, and wished everyone a well deserved holiday over the Christmas period. Nunnery brass, led by Nicky Dawe, provided further entertainment with playing of traditional carols in the canteen whilst parents and students partook in mince pies and refreshments.
“We are all extremely proud of our students and are grateful to them for their many talents and commitment to school performances. It is a very special evening in the Arts calendar” Miss Harper said. Delfini Pagan, 8.6, said, “It improved my confidence, singing on stage. I have never taken part in a carol concert but this was very exciting and enjoyable.” This showcase is an annual event that highlights the talents of students at Nunnery Wood, if you would like to take part please attend rehearsals at the beginning of September every Tuesday at lunchtime in MU2.
Sixth Form Musical Trip Sophie Cockeram YEAR 8 ON Tuesday the 10th of December, Miss. Sharpe and Mr. Burford took a group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students to Worcester Sixth Form College. They watched their interpretation of the musical ‘Into The Woods’. Carys Slimming 8.10 said: “It was extremely enjoyable, the songs were very catchy and the
actors were all brilliant. Especially Sophie Nixon playing Cinderella.” For those who are unaware, Into The Woods is the story of all your favourite fairytale characters if they lived at the same time. It tells of Cinderella and her ugly step-sisters; Jack and his beanstalk; Rapunzel with her witch of a mother and Red Riding Hood with the Big, Bad Wolf. This version of the story was found to be innovative, interesting and hilarious
IN order to promote the school production of the Addams Family, a competition was launched to design a promotional poster. Students were invited to design a poster which would be eyecatching and informative to promote the forthcoming performance. Year 7 Amber Knight has won the competition and her winning design can be seen around school and on all school social media. Amber said, “I enjoy art. Motocross Champion Kurt Evans YEAR 8
KURT has been racing motocross since the age of 6. After winning at club championship level Kurt has moved on to compete at both British national and European championships. Whilst training in Spain 2018 Kurt was approached by an ex GP rider who now coaches
Seconds Out! YEAR 10 pupil, Ryan Jones who trains with Worcester City Boxing Club recently fought in Ireland and won title ‘Best British Boxer’ at the championships which took place in Ireland 15th-17th December.
Ryan also competed at Kingshurst WMC in December 2019, entering the ring against Ethan Fletcher. Both started the fight with similar records of 18 wins and 3 losses. Ryan picked up a unanimous points win. Ryan said, “I was pleased to get this title. I am now training for my next championship after Christmas. My goal is to go professional in boxing.” Ryan’s younger brother, Tristan Jones, Year 8, is also celebrating his recent win. Tristan competed at a competition in Kent on Saturday 11th January, winning all 3 of his rounds unanimous-
up and coming riders along with professional GP riders, to become part of his academy. Since joining the academy Kurt has travelled all over Europe training and competing against riders from all over the world. One of Kurt’s most memorable achievements was competing in the Arena Cross Tour. This gave Kurt the opportunity to be one of only 12 competitors in his class, race in arenas across the uk and Ireland in front of up to 10,000 spec-
tators per night. Kurt fully enjoyed the experience of being part of a professional show along side professional riders from as far as Russia, America and Australia. The 2020 outdoor race season will begin in March so Kurt is training hard both on and off the bike and is hoping for some good results this year.
YEAR 9 student Markus Telger has been training hard and has recently played this debut match for Worcester Bears Basketball Team. FOR the second year running, the Year 10 boys’ rugby team found their way to the Year 10 Rugby Cup Final.
Tyler Bryce year 9 pupil who also trains at Worcester City Boxing Club took Silver at a tournament at the Riviera Box club in Torquay and a Gold at his most recent tournament which took place at Moseley Rugby Club in December.
Harry Male stepped in as captain to lead the team against Prince Henry’s High School. Some of the highlights included Ned’s fast feet evading some strong tackles made by the opposition and some incredible kicks from members of the Nunnery team.
The opposition played well, excelling in side stepping. Nunnery were up against a tactically strong and determined team and played the game with good spirit. Some intense training for the final paid off. In the end, Nunnery lost to a well prepared Prince Henry’s Team – Congratulations to them. Well done to Oscar Vickers, Nunnery’s man of the match. Thanks go to Prince Henry’s High School for hosting the game and also to the referee.
Ryan said, “I feel really passionate about what I do. I train 4 times per week and I run an average of 2 miles per day which really helps me in my fitness training. I would like to continue boxing and look to do this for a career.”
Couch to 5K Challenge
STAFF have been encouraged to get active and complete a ‘Couch to 5km’ running challenge. Mrs Coggins, who is a qualified running coach, encouraged staff to take to the challenge and has been training them to make the distance. They have been running on Fridays after school and have been given homework to do in between each session! The group have got different levels of running experience and fitness. Some have never run at all before, whilst others have been out of it for some time and wanted to get back into it. The programme is tailored to meet the needs of everyone and make sure that they all succeed in getting to the 5km distance.
The sessions have included bursts of walking, jogging and running, gradually increasing the running time and reducing the walking time. We will keep you updated on how they all get on.

A HUGE well done to the Year 7 Football Girls in their tournament with The Chase and Hanley Castle last Thursday. In total there were 6 Football teams which allowed the girls to play plenty of football. The standard of football was fantastic along with the respect and sportsmanship from every player.

Worcester County Cricket Club Tips PLAYERS from Worcestershire County Cricket Club came to Nunnery Wood to meet students and to share their tips on training and getting into cricket. The team began by demonstrating a training session to the students. This included warm ups, stamina and endurance exercises
as well as stretching. Following the training session, the players took questions from the students and also got their autographs. Year 8 student Erin Kemp said, “I went along as I really like cricket and so does my dad. I play outside of school and want to keep on doing so. I got
all of their autographs. Isobel Hunt, also Year 8 said,”They were really friendly and it was fun to watch them train. It was really interesting to see what they did to trainI really like sport and now definitely want to get more into cricket.”
