The season is upon us!

It’s time to deck the halls and reinforce family traditions for the next generation. Christmas wouldn’t be (and isn’t) the same without children to share it with. I’ve been called a humbug in my lifetime. At times, I’ve even been able to turn a blind eye to the holiday, hoping that by not looking, the hubbub would quickly pass. When grandchild-number-one came along 17 years ago, though, my tune quickly changed. He was perfect - as all grandchildren are - and quickly became the reason for me to celebrate the season in a manner I was unaccustomed to. I was hoping by the time this issue went to press, I’d be able to announce the birth of my second grandchild, but we’re still waiting. Any day now, we’re told. Because grandchild-number-one (Tyler) is essentially a full-grown man, the arrival of his sister, Allyson Rose, will herald yet another opportunity to revel in Christmas through the eyes of a child. For that very reason, children are the best gift of all, no matter the season! They do wonders for hearts that have grown

forgetful and a little bit crusty. Thus, words with greater portent have possibly never been spoken: “For unto us a child is born…” Isaiah 9:6, KJV If you’d like a fun opportunity to celebrate with children, while learning how area nonprofit groups serve kids and families in NWA, please join us at the Kids’ Non-Profit Gift Fair, Saturday, December 14th, from 1 - 3 p.m., at the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale. Local organizations will be onsite with kids’ activities, and to provide alternative gift options for those hard-to-buy-for people on your gift lists. When you donate to a nonprofit group in the name of a loved one, you will be giving a gift that gives twice. You’ll also get to meet The Dark Knight and Diana, Queen of the Amazons, from Iowa League of Heroes! For upcoming fair information, including participating non-profit groups, follow our Facebook page (Kid’s Directory of Northwest Arkansas). May you and yours be richly blessed with a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! Be safe! - Sheila

High quality child care looks like

MATH

In quality child care facilities, there are no worksheets or flash cards. Today’s early childhood educators introduce math concepts through a hands-on approach. Children learn about math through blocks and puzzles. They learn to count with songs and rhymes. They learn about amounts and quantity when they pretend to grocery shop and cook. They learn gradually, by experience and through play.

MAKE MATH

MATTER Help your toddler learn math with these fun hands-on activities. Use recycled cardboard from cereal, cracker or shipping boxes, crayons and playdough to give meaning to math. Teach your child to make playdough “worms.”

Then get busy making shapes, picking apples or putting petals on a flower. Talk about the shapes and colors. Count out loud as you decorate the cookies.

recycled cardboard

The important thing is to play and have fun. The more you play with math, the sooner your child will be doing the counting. These activities help your child recognize and name numerals, shapes, colors and patterns

fun Fact of the month!

Christmas was first declared a federal holiday in 1870 but Arkansas was one of the first states to declare it a holiday in 1838, just two years after statehood. Many of our Christmas traditions stem from European traditions celebrating Christmas and other winter holidays. When immigrants arrived in Arkansas they brought these traditions with them. 18 • Please say you saw it in Kid’s Directory

The important thing is to play and have fun. The more you play with math, the sooner your child will be doing the counting. These activities help your child recognize and name numerals, shapes, colors and patterns
