Featured Events and Programs NVDPL Celebrates Family Literacy Day Family Literacy Day is Sunday, January 27. Here at NVDPL we are celebrating the day (and the week and month leading up to the day) with a variety of programs designed to help encourage family literacy. Family Literacy Facebook Contest NVDPL is hosting a Family Literacy Facebook Photo Contest from Monday, January 7, to Friday, January 25.

Family Pajama Storytime Thursday, January 24, 7:00pm - 7:30pm Parkgate Branch Library Enjoy stories and songs by the fire at the Library. Come in your jammies and fuzzy slippers! Free; no registration required. All ages welcome.

Family Literacy Storytime Sunday, January 27, 2:00pm - 2:45pm Capilano Branch Library Bring the whole family for a fun storytime that will celebrate the joy of reading together. Free; no registration required. All ages welcome.

A Sneak Peek at Parent-Child Mother Goose

The contest involves practising a literacy activity together with your family for 15 minutes per day, taking a photo and posting it to the Library’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nvdpl. For contest details and ideas for family literacy activities, visit www.nvdpl.ca.

Wednesday, January 16, 2:00pm – 2:30pm Capilano Branch Library Find out more about our popular Parent-Child Mother Goose program at this informal information session. Capilano Branch Library will be hosting the ParentChild Mother Goose Program® this winter (see inside this newsletter for details), so this will be a great time to learn all about the program. The Capilano Universe Lecture Series Returns! The popular Capilano Universe Lecture series returns in 2013! Five engaging lectures featuring Capilano University faculty are planned for the winter 2012 series. The first lecture takes place Tuesday, January 15 at Lynn Valley Main Library from 7:00pm - 8:45pm, where Dr. Leonard George will be speaking about Spiritualism. As a psychologist, Dr. George wanted to find out what mediums experience when they “meet a spirit.” To do so, he traveled to New York to train with renowned medium, Dr. Judith Rochester. At this lecture, Dr. George will review the history of Spiritualism, note what psychologist know about mediumistic phenomena, and report on his experiences.

SFU Philosopher’s Café Series

Wednesday, January 9, 7:00pm – 8:45pm The SFU Philosopher’s Café is your chance to debate philosophical issues in a group setting. Join us on January 9 as we discuss education. Are we headed in the right direction? The Ministry of Education is considering revising the K–12 curriculum. We will review the Ministry’s proposals and discuss their wisdom. Free; no registration required.

District Library Gallery

Drop by the second floor of the Lynn Valley Main Library to check out the exhibitions of the District Library Gallery. • Neil MacDonald’s exhibition runs until January 29 • Peterson Turgoose’s exhibition runs January 30 to March 26. A free opening reception for Peterson, hosted by the Friends of the Library, takes place Saturday, February 2, from 2:00pm–4:00pm. All are welcome.

Parent-Child Mother Goose

The Parent-Child Mother Goose Program® is a fun group experience for parents and their babies (birth to 12 months) that focuses on the pleasure and power of learning rhymes, songs and stories. Registration for this free program opens Thursday, January 17 at 10:00am. To register, call 604-987-4471, ext. 8175, or visit the children’s desk at Capilano Branch Library in person. Space is limited to 25 registrants. Please register at one location only. Registrants may not register by email or on behalf of someone else. The ParentChild Mother Goose Program at Capilano Branch Library will run Wednesdays from 10:30am - 11:30am, January 23 - March 13.
