Come one, come all to this amazing book sale at Lynn Valley Main Library, hosted by the Friends of the North Vancouver District Public Library.

Wednesday, February 9th 7:00pm – 8:45pm Lynn Valley Main Library Community Meeting Room.

At this sale you’ll find a huge variety of books and audio visual materials at bargain prices ranging from 50 cents to $2!

During the Cold War of the 1960s and early 1970s the one-upmanship between the KGB and CIA took a very strange turn when it became known that the KGB were forging ahead with research into paranormal abilities.

And on Sunday, everything is half price! Plus, on Sunday, you can get a bag of books for $5, or a box for $10! Location

Gerry Hennessey

Join Cold War historian and professional mentalist Gerry Hennessey for a unique presentation about the involvement of psychics and magicians in major events throughout the last century. Hennessey will perform many of the demonstrations used to convince the KGB that psychic spying was possible. Will these demonstrations convince you? Was the KGB fooled by extrasensory deception? Capilano Universe Lecture Series Tuesday, February 8th 7:00pm - 8:45pm Parkgate Branch Library Don’t miss the second lecture of the Capilano Universe lecture series! This presentation will feature Capilano University’s Michelle Mason, who will explore the question: can documentary film save the world? As part of this presentation, Mason will show her award-winning documentary, The Friendship Village (2002/52 minutes). This will be followed by Michelle Mason

a discussion about the power of documentaries to change the way we understand the world around us. Capilano Universe presentations are free and open to the public. Workshop for Parents and Caregivers: Using Books to Support Social and Emotional Development Tuesday, February 1st, 7:00pm - 8:30pm In this workshop, learn how books can help prepare you and your child for the emotional ups and downs of life. At this event, the presenters will share ideas on expanding the use of books into meaningful, fun activities for children three to eight years of age. This program is presented in partnership with the North Shore Supported Child Development Program. Free; everyone welcome. No registration required.

Author Reading with Kristin Butcher

Thursday, February 17th, 10:30am - 11:30am School groups and interested adults are invited to an author reading event with Kristin Butcher. Butcher is author of Zach and Zoe and the Bank Robber, which has been nominated for a Red Cedar Book Award. The Red Cedar Book Awards are B.C.’s young readers’ choice awards. Teachers of Grades 4 and 5 who are interested in bringing their class to this event should contact the Lynn Valley Main Library children’s department at 604-984-0286. Interested adults are welcome to drop-in. This event is free.

Red Cedar Book Club at Lynn Valley Main Library

Each year, kids in grades 4 to 7 get to decide who will receive the Red Cedar Book Award by voting for best fiction and information books. Come in to Lynn Valley Main Library to pick up your reading log and start reading nominated titles so that you can vote in April. Free; no registration required.

Philosopher’s Café Series, presented by SFU

Third Wednesday of each month, 7:00pm – 8:45pm Vibrant street-level discussions moderated by Mark Battersby, PhD. February 16th’s session addresses the topic of community. What is a community? Is community fundamentally geographic or can it be interest based? Are we losing community in our urban and digital world or may digital connectivity enhance the reach of community? This Philosopher’s Café event is presented in partnership with the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, and the ‘Campfires’ exhibition at CityScape Community Art Space. Everyone welcome; no registration required. Admission $5.

• Nicola Morgan’s painting exhibition runs until February 23rd • Suzy Stroet’s oil painting exhibition runs February 23rd - April 20th. Opening reception for Stroet takes place Saturday, February 26th, 2:00pm - 4:00pm.

English Conversation Corner

Mondays, 7:30pm – 8:45pm, Come and practise your English language skills with a fun group of new speakers. This program is presented in partnership with the Bahá’í of North Vancouver. Free; no registration required. Participants must have some knowledge of English.

Friends Donate $5000 Toward Improved Library Spaces
