I dECLARE! Bart Rademaker, Md. Board certified Plastic Surgeon Medical Director of Rejuva Center for Plastic Surgery and Med Spa The holiday season is not joyous and happy for everybody. To many people, the coming days of December are notorious with feelings of melancholy. As the brightness of the day dims and overcast skies linger, many thoughts become more somber. Dim with memories of happy days past or lost loved ones and as days cool down – so does hope for many people’s future. Why does this happen and what can we do about it? There are certain natural changes that have been occurring on earth for millennia and our physiologies have adapted to them. They are almost necessary if not inevitable – perhaps simply to allow us to appreciate and compare these times with the happier spring and summer months. Whatever it may be, just a little melancholy is a good thing and puts our lives in perspective. It also gives us the incentive to make certain changes for the better – it is no coincidence that this is when we make our New Year’s resolutions!! We seem to realize more about the darker side of our existence and find the way to brighten it up. This helps us find balance, harmony, hope, endeavor and finally prosperity. It is very similar to the cycle of crops and the harvest at the end of a season. Truth is – this melancholy can be too intense and this is unnatural. Usually there are deep seated roots to this. Harmony is found through digging into our selves and cutting the roots – releasing whatever is holding us down. Drugs – either medicinal or recreational will do a number on us and finding ways to avoid their use is the primary solution to this problem. Nutritional – sugar is a culprit in today’s depressive states – eliminating this and particularly carbonated drinks will significantly sweeten our lives. Junk food, MSM, hydrogenated fats and so many other products will negatively affect our lives. Be educated – because you are what you eat! Dehydration, fatigue, and the inability to properly manage simple stress in life – let alone the hard ones contributes to personal despair and the

feelings if inadequacy. A good night sleep is often a cure and drinking the proper amount of fluids gives us energy. Stress at any time, especially nowadays, gets in the way of seeing things for what they really are. It changes our perspectives and our current feelings. Finding better ways to manage or even eliminate stress is key to happiness. Choosing a better point of view on the situation, being flexible and finding other options often results in the resolution of the reason for having the stress in the first place. No direction in life. If you do not establish personal goals, make a commitment to go after them and finally schedule them to get results, is usually accompanied by depression, loss of meaning and hopelessness. Toxins are everywhere even when we diligently avoid them. Detoxifying the body through exercise and even better through a body cleansing will dramatically influence how you feel. Regular exercise is mandatory to optimal wellness. And finally, your personal declaration - declare your outcome for yourself. Decide and act and you will find an answer. It would have been easy to describe any of the wonderful holistic or alternative therapies like Reiki, vibrational sound, shiatsu or herbal medicines to give you a single solution to all this melancholy but they may not work for you. Truth is – YOU are the answer by declaring what YOU want and take the appropriate steps to achieve them. Nu You Magazine is committed to making this possible. This harmony has been my personal mission as a surgeon and healer and that is why I contribute to the success of this magazine. Embrace the many stories, solutions and resources this publication has to offer. Make the personal changes and commitments as well as new habits or wellness therapies to make your life better and harmonious.
