nce upon a time, I had never heard of a place called Carbondale, probably just like you. This was despite several trips to Aspen back in the 80’s. My wife and I had found ourselves house hunting in an area called the Roaring Fork Valley. Our realtor suggested we look at a new development in, at that time, a very small town called Carbondale. As we drove down Highway 133 for the first time, we were frankly not very impressed, but we agreed to take a tour of a new development called River Valley Ranch. At that time there was no ranch house, no golf course, and only one lonely dwelling on the west side of the Crystal River. It was a very overcast day so there was also no view of Mt. Sopris, but our realtor promised us “Just wait until you see it!” We would soon find out what she was taking about. It was getting to be lunch time so our realtor suggested, “Let’s check out the historic downtown.” We had lunch at a local establishment and were so surprised to see real cowboys at the bar. I thought that was really cool and all of a sudden my feelings about Carbondale started to change. That establishment is still in business today, and you can still find real cowboys hanging out there. We found the ambiance of Main Street to be absolutely irresistible. We ventured across the old railroad tracks and couldn’t believe what we were seeing. There were horses, cows, and beautiful open spaces with incredible vista views. I began to experience a strange feeling of déjà vu that reconnected me to my childhood and I realized I was actually seeing my dreams of how I envisioned my life to be as an adult. I started to say to myself, “Welcome to Carbondale.” We came back the next week on a sunny day and there was Mt. Sopris in all its grandeur. We knew we had found our new home. I can’t help but think most of the people who call this town home have similar stories of how they came to be here and decided to stay. It is certainly a special place to be and a special community to be part of. So many that call this place home are very involved in the community, whether it be serving on the Tree Board, Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, the Historical Society, or any of the incredible non-profit organizations that base their operations in Carbondale. It is also a great place to do business, and you will find many people here who share a common vision of sustainability for the future. There is certainly a place for everyone here in this incredible Rocky Mountain hideaway and we welcome you with open arms. Welcome to Carbondale. One bit of advice though for you visitors – please don’t honk your horns at the cows while they are making their way through town to change pastures. It doesn’t make them go any faster and besides that, we all really care about them. Some of us even consider them extended members of the community. Welcome to Carbondale.

It all started with the blacksmiths - a craft of iron and fire and sweat in a community of emerging to accomplished artisans and artists. Find yourself in a dramatic outdoor setting as you experience the visual arts, theatre, dance and music. It boasts a history of craftsmanship that is alive and well in the Carbondale area. Wind your way from gallery to gallery. Uncover the spirit of the valley in photography, painting, sculpture, glass, ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, blacksmithing and the performing arts. Several diverse organizations are dedicated to the inspiration and promotion of the arts. Our love of melody has spawned season after season of musical performances in venues from the parks to the pubs. Perhaps one of the most notable is the Annual Carbondale Mountain Fair, which offers three days of music, arts, and crafts. DININ G

From ethnic and multicultural to educational and award-winning, you’ll find a gourmet selection good for everyone - good for the mind, good for the soul, and as you’ll discover, good for the palate. Carbondale continues to draw recognition as a culinary hotspot. A handful of out-of-the-way and un-franchised eateries offer slow food, fast food, eat in or eat out. There are caterers to wow your every occasion and need. They are upscale and casual; sophisticated and succulent, an exquisite dining experience. You’ll find traditional American cuisine, Mexican entrees, Italian dishes, and Thai fair. A blacksmith’s hearth now heats meals, not metals. There’s also several sumptuous sandwich shops, and some of the best pizza parlors around.

Carbondale. It’s creative. It’s colorful. It’s flavorful. It’s delectable. It’s the best of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Through Hunting

70s. It’s only upon living and hunting in the Carbondale surrounds that

One of the Many Elk Herds that Inhabit the Roaring Fork Valley | Photo: David Clark, Highcountry Photography

I’ve discovered this as a reality, one far from the silver screen.

Written By Geneviève Joëlle Villamizar

I grew up feasting on Marty Stauffer’s Wild America back in the warm fuzzy

More than any other pursuit, hunting has married our family to these mountains. It’s in stillness and observing that we’ve connected with and sunk roots in to folds and peaks of our region. I can’t give away names or locations; each of us hunters has to do the work to figure that part out. But I can say we have much to choose from and in which to immerse ourselves. Between diverse geographies and a plethora of game choices, hunting is sublime here. Animals abound! I’m always awed at the sight of wild turkeys. Compared to the robins in my own yard, these birds look like dinosaurshuge and unreal. We often see them as we come down the mountain at dusk. At first all we see is the one…then out of the grass blade shadows and tracery of branches emerges another and another. It’s wild to see them milling about in the meadows,

like a herd of cattle… and to see one fly? How does a bird that large gain flight?! We love grouse season. No 4:00 am wake up call; no frigid sunrises, stiff and shivering in position. Grouse season means a warm breakfast, many mugs of hot coffee, a packed picnic and a leisurely start. Going after grouse is a walk in the woods with friends and conversation, running, leaping dogs quartering up ahead. Its gorgeous days in the high country, savoring Indian Summer–hopefully celebrating the days end with an iron skillet of sizzling grouse tenders–the most delicious bird meat ever. It’s nutty and sweet, a darker meat enhanced simply by a hearty glass of red. Elk hunting seems to be the main draw to our valley, although many locals go for deer as well. From early October to mid-November, our hills and vales abound 16

with blaze orange. For this reason, we chose our hunting grounds based on the sheer difficulty of accessing it…or so we thought. Early this summer, we had come to find those woods were teeming with Marty’s wildlife. We scouted for elk sign each time we hiked or went hunting for grouse. I’ll never forget the pleasure of glassing two huge bears, body surfing on a steep, autumn-hued hillside of thimbleberries. They seemed drunk in their rolling and lolling about. We had to try some for ourselves. The miniscule fruits were like raspberries soaked in wine…delicious. The day before opening, we found an entire herd, with several bulls present, only a mile from our tent! Shaking with thrills, we left them at peace and spent the afternoon tracking bears and deer,

spotting grouse and otherwise getting lost in all that natural wonder. We had the mountain to ourselves. Of course the hordes showed up oh-dark thirty, opening morning and pushed the herd out right before our eyes. There wasn’t a fair shot to be taken. It must’ve been positive hope that brought our bull to us the next day. It was a perfect hunt, both of us working together to make it happen. We aren’t always that lucky. Some years we get no animal. We love what the hunt does for our spirit. Sharing meals of our game with friends truly makes it meaningful. In down time and off-season, we enjoy watching even the animals we don’t pursue, learning from them and their natural antics. Marty Stouffer’s Wild America might not be on tv any more, and that’s okay, because we live it year around, right in Base Camp: Carbondale!

The Hiking Experience In

Carbondale M y

Carbondale is surrounded by a zillion hiking trails, but my favorite is Mushroom Rock. My wife and I got married on a quiet ledge off the Mushroom Rock trail.

c a r b o n d a l e

We scattered my dog’s ashes and hung a prayer flag there a year later. “Luna’s Rock” is surrounded by the most amazing trees – junipers with character and patience. We love it for the best view of the place we call home and the feeling we get knowing we belong right here. Top to bottom, Mushroom Rock is everything that makes Carbondale home.

From the highest point, I can see from one end of the valley to the other. I can see where the Crystal River empties into the Roaring Fork, where the CRMS put-in winds into Cemetery for miles of continuous class II-III whitewater. I can see the multiple personalities of Mount Sopris, stoic with time and light. I can see bald eagles soar above the expansive meadow of Delaney Park, where I proposed to my wife by a brook so sweet, we re-created it with a fountain in our living room. I can sprint, walk or stroll to the top of Mushroom Rock and see sunsets that rival the mighty Pacific. Locals, guests, dogs, mountain bikers, tikes, teens, athletes, families, young and old alike – they’re all making their way up or down at a pace that feels just right to them – and they all feel like family.

There is a tree on the backside of Mushroom Rock trail I have heard people commonly call “the hugging tree.” It reminds me of a wise old grandmother, inviting a hug with her strong limbs reached out like one last snuggle before saying goodbye. Most of the folks I’ve seen reach out and give her a gentle touch. That old tree is as much a part of this town as any of us, and the trail she rests on is an important part of why this place is so special. I can’t wait to hike that trail with my baby girl for the first time. I can’t wait to take her to Luna’s Rock and point out our rooftop next to the Rio Grand bike trail. I can’t wait to watch her scrambling around up there, discovering the timeless trees she was named after. I can’t wait to watch our lives unfold, season after glorious season on a trail overlooking

everything I love about this quiet little mountain town. Out of all the trails to hike, bike, jog, ski and stroll, Mushroom Rock is the one where my heart feels right at home. Evan Z. is the Division Manager (Aspen-Carbondale) for YouthZone, a non-profit working with kids and families.

Cycling In & Around

Looking for the true Carbondale local experience? The cycling scene might just be the answer. Carbondale’s surrounding scenic byways and gorgeous trails rival the town’s gold medal fishing and five-star dining. Thanks to the mix of high desert dirt and alpine terrain the area’s cylcling has everything from buffed single track trails to rugged climbs to fast flowing descents on mountain Roadways.

The Prince Creek trails, south of Carbondale, twist and climb through oak forest at the base of Mount Sopris. There is parking at the trailhead, but many of the locals ride from town to get warmed up and log a few extra miles. The Prince Creek trails have beautiful rolling sections of single track for the beginner rider. For the advanced rider gnarly climbs, high speed banked turns and even a car to ride over are sure to stir up interest. A great place to start is with the Porcupine loop; the trail is a fun easy-going ride that takes a little over an hour. For a longer three-to-four-hour expedition, a cyclist can ride over Crown Mountain to Rock Bottom Ranch, just west of El Jebel, returning to Carbondale on the Rio Grande bike path. The other mountain biking hotspot is Red Hill, the red desert bluff overlooking town. The Three Gulches Trail on Red Hill is a steep challenge offering rocky climbs,

narrow trails, and a hair-raising downhill back to the trailhead. More than one local has a thrilling tale about this difficult ride.

level and the numerous access points allow cyclists to choose the length of the ride and when it’s time to stop for lunch.

Road Biking

The Rio Grande serves as the main artery to many of the popular valley rides found on country roads. Most of the country roads lead to Colorado hill climbing and around Carbondale there are plenty of options. Riding into Missouri Heights is the local’s choice for sweaty ascent above the valley floor. Most cyclists take on the climb by riding up Cattle Creek or Catherine Store Road looping north of Carbondale. Missouri Heights has some of the best views of the Elk Mountains and offers abundant hills to get the heart pumping. To live like the Carbondale locals just bring a bike and go for a ride in the center of the Colorado Rockies.

The mountain biking is top-notch in Carbondale, but so is the road biking. The Rio Grande Trail is one of the best rides in the Roaring Fork Valley. Cycling simplified: no cars, no tight road shoulders, just a smooth asphalt path from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. The world is a little slower on a bike and there is time to take in the landscape of the Roaring Fork. One of the most scenic segments of the path is about five miles east of Carbondale from Catherine Store road to Emma. The bike path snakes along the Roaring Fork River giving glimpses of birds, deer, and ranchland. Plus you are likely to meet half the town of Carbondale riding bikes, fishing, running, walking the dog, and even roller blading. The mellow grade of the bike path makes it fun for any skill

The fir st k now n r esiden ts of t he C a r bon da l e area were migrating mountain Ute Indians. By the late 1880’s, they had been relocated to a reservation in Southwest Colorado. When silver and gold were discovered near Aspen in 1879, droves of prospectors poured into the upper Roaring Fork Valley to settle and establish mining claims, and the rich and fertile river bottom land in Carbondale was coveted by hunters and farmers wishing to supply food to the mining boom towns. By 1881, twenty families made their homes in Carbondale. These early settlers started cattle and sheep ranches and began growing potatoes, which for over 50 years was the mainstay crop of the Carbondale economy. Carbondale found itself a center of commerce with the arrival of the railroad in 1887. Railroad construction and marble and coal mining in Redstone and Marble brought many workers and investors. The last working coal mine, the Mid-Continent, closed in 1991. The town was incorporated on January 31, 1888 and was named in honor of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, the original home of some of the early settlers. During this era, Richard Sopris led an expedition into the valley to explore for minerals. Although the report he filed was largely negative, Mt. Sopris (elevation 12,953 feet) was named in his honor.

Village Smithy • 26 S. Third As small as Carbondale was in the 1890s, it had many blacksmith shops, and this building was one of the first. Note the anvil by the main entrance, similar to one used by Hugh Pattison, one of the early occupants. “There were hitchin’ racks on the north side,” remembered Mrs. Cleone Oliver, an old timer. The building has been occupied by the Village Smithy Restaurant under continuous ownership of the Chacos family for more than 25 years

3 Blacksmith Shop • 102 Main This is one of Carbondale’s oldest buildings, constructed in the late 1800s. The wood flooring, which remains in the building today, was probably planed across Main Street at the old mill and lumberyard, torn down in the late 1940s.

4 Tanney Ranch • 199 Main W a lk t o M a i n s t r ee t a n d t u r n r i gh t

The Creamery • 220 Main was once a tire repair shop. The two-story structure at 202 Main was the local creamery for many years, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Smoke. The creamery continued in business until the 1940s, when it became a private residence. The creamery was a place where local dairy farmers could have their milk pasteurized and sold.

This building is one of the earliest surviving residences in Carbondale, occupied since 1888. It sits on the site of the ranch where Mrs. Tanney ran the State Station, once the only place along the Glenwood-Aspen line that served meals to travelers. It was occupied by a single family for most of the 20th century.

5 Mt. Sopris Hotel • 66 N. Third Built before 1900 and first used as a stagecoach stop, this building became Carbondale’s first hotel. The official population of Carbondale at that time was less than 200, but the town nevertheless boasted a grocery and dry goods store, a 34

jewelry store and watch repair, lodging, a fruit and produce store, a general store, restaurants, a millinery, a livery stable, and several saloons. Post Office • 96 N. Third 6 To the north of the hotel was the post office building, owned by Alberta Sebree, postmistress for many years. Mail was sorted into pigeonholes for pickup in the south room, back when it cost 3 cents to mail a letter. The original building has been recently replaced by a new private residence.

Train Depot • 97 N. Third Carbondale was once a major junction of the Crystal and Roaring Fork lines, which hauled potatoes, coal, and passengers up the Crystal River Valley, over to Aspen, and down to Glenwood Springs and beyond. This building was moved about 100 yards from its original spot. The train trip between Carbondale and Redstone took one and a half hours if everything ran smoothly.

Dad Long’s Store • 303 Main This 1890’s-era building advertised in a 1911 Potato Day program as “The Best...for the least. Dry goods, clothing, groceries and shoes.” The back room was a social center for farmers and cowboys, who sat around the potbellied stove, bought crackers from the barrel and helped themselves to a slice of cheese. The recessed entry, large display windows and decorative brick corbels were typical of commercial architecture of the day and are seen in many of Carbondale’s Main Street buildings. The iron rosettes on the outside east wall indicate where steel rods were inserted to hold high walls in place and keep them from buckling.

mountain districts of Colorado,” according to The Potato, a book by Carbondale experts Eugene Grubb and W. S. Guilford.

Pings Store • 399 Main Once owned by William Pings, a German businessman who once managed the creamery, this was a dry goods store for many years, well into World War II. The building was divided into several commercial spaces, one housing a drug store. Note the coal chute on the 4th Street side.

Livery • 36 N. Fourth This long brick building was the livery stable. When trains arrived at the depot, a two seated buggy (called a “hack”) would be driven over to pick up the passengers and carry them the short (often muddy or dusty) distance to Main Street. With the coming of the automotive age, the livery was converted to a mechanic’s shop

Bagett’s Grocery • 55 N. Fourth The large brick building across the street from the livery was Jim Sheridan’s Saloon, with a brothel upstairs. The business was purchased by the Bagetts, a family of

Italian immigrants, and run as a tavern until Prohibition. It was then converted into a meat market and grocery store.

Lieberman’s Bakery • Vacant lot To the left of Bagett’s, you can see part of the red brick oven, all that remains of Lieberman’s German Bakery. The 1910 census showed that Carbondale had immigrants from Canada, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, Great Britain, Mexico, Sweden, France, Scotland, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Wales, Hungary and Japan. The Liebermans were well-known for their delicious pastries. Continued on Page 36....

Old Town Hall • 319 Main This small false-front building was once the Town Hall. The town offices have moved at least twice since being located here.

Pour House • 351 Main Built in 1896 (the year that the first kiss was shown on film) this decorative brick building with the double transom over the door once housed the Sherwood Motion Picture Theater, where it cost 10 cents to see a movie. “They didn’t really get the good pictures,” an old timer said. “Sometimes, somebody would take us to Glenwood to see a really good picture, but at least we knew what was going on in the world.” Later, the building housed Kenney’s Pharmacy.

Potato Growers Association

389 Main. This bottle glass storefront was once the headquarters for the Potato Growers Association, formed in 1923. The first carload of potatoes was shipped out of the valley 30 years earlier, and by 1912, the Carbondale area was a leading producer of spuds for the hotel and dining car trade. “No part of the world is better fitted by nature for growing potatoes than the

The Dinkel Block • 400 block of Main. “You could buy an automobile, a saddle, a buggy, groceries, shoes, anything that was for sale. If Dinkel didn’t have it, he’d order it for you.” It is Carbondale’s most imposing building, begun during the building boom of the late 19th century. The original part of the structure is the northeast corner on the alley. The Mountain View Hotel operated on the second story, complete with a kitchen and dining room. Additions to the Dinkel Block were built in subsequent years, culminating with the one-story section on the west end, built in 1913 for potato storage. The space at 419 Main housed the First National Bank of Carbondale until it was dissolved during the Depression. The Crystal Theatre, opened in 1948, displays old posters in the lobby that advertise the movies shown there in the old days. PHOTOS BY BRENT MOSS PHOTOGRAPHY

Potato Days • 4th & Main Stop at the intersection of Main and 4th Street. It was at this location that Potato Days were often celebrated, beginning in the fall of 1909. There were prizes for the largest beets, potatoes, and babies. By 1911, there was all-day music, a horse race, and a Grand Ball on Saturday night. The Married Women’s Race featured a pair of silk hose as first prize. This was also the site of an elevated bandstand under which the town fire hose was stored. Carbondale had no fire truck until 1955–only the hose, and a group of volunteer firemen.

The Granary • 505 & 511 Garfield On Fourth Street, walk the short block to the south (towards Mt. Sopris) and then turn right again. You’ll find yourself in a shady enclave, in front of the red Robinson and White Granary, constructed in 1906. It was here that seed, feed, and other grains were stored and sold. A railroad spur ran behind the building on the west and connected with the main line that ran between Carbondale and Redstone.

Electric Company • 553 Garfield The small building next to the chicken yard was the electric company office. Electric lights were installed in town in 1910 and the rates were expensive. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not cites Carbondale as having the highest electrical costs in America at one time.

300 Block of Main • South Side need hires photos This block of Main held a number of eateries, small business, and saloons. At one time, Carbondale had at least 15 saloons, many located on this very block. Leonhardy’s was one of the most popular drinking establishments, with its long, ornate bar.

Odd Fellows Lodge • 302 Main Fire was a constant threat in the West. In 1891, most of the buildings on the 200 block of Main Street burned to the ground. Businesses were quickly moved one block to the west, but fire struck again. The original Odd Fellows Lodge No. 75, dedicated on July 4, 1888, burned 17 years later to the day, It was rebuilt the following year. The fire is said to have ignited when someone tried to light a carbide lamp in the basement. The main floor was used for dances, traveling shows, movies and indoor basketball games.
