Emissions reductions (expressed in units of Carbon Dioxide equivalents (CO2e)) resulting from methane destruction; Project emissions of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion and purchased electricity.

LANDFILL GAS COLLECTION & FLARING PROJECT

The Beulah Municipal Landfill, located at 6815 East New Market Ellwood Road, Dorchester County, Hurlock, Maryland, is an active municipal landfill that has been permitted to accept municipal solid waste (MSW) since 1994. The landfill, owned by Dorchester County, is permitted for 1,483,205 cubic yards and is expected to reach its design capacity in 2012. The Project, owned by Dorchester Renewable Energy, LLC, is a landfill gas collection and flaring project that reduces methane emissions at the Landfill. Construction of the Project took place throughout the spring of 2009 and the project began operations on July 7, 2009. The Project consists of an active landfill gas collection system and an enclosed flare. Prior to the Project’s start date, one passive candlestick flare was installed as a test measure in 2007; it was removed in early 2009.


THE THERMAL INSTRUMENTS MODEL 62-9 / 9500 THERMAL MASS PROBE FLOW METER IS FACTORY CALIBRATED EVERY 18 MONTHS PER MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS.

INSTRUMENT QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL:

TerraPass’ instrument quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) plan for the project’s monitoring equipment complies with CAR’s requirements. The Thermal Instruments Model 62-9/9500 Thermal Mass Probe Flow Meter is factory calibrated every 18 months per manufacturer’s recommendations. The instrument was sent for factory calibration at the end of the reporting period to meet the manufacturer’s recommended calibration frequency. When the flow meter is sent out for calibration, a loaner flow meter provided by the manufacturer is used. This loaner meter is calibrated by the manufacturer prior to its installation. During this reporting period, the loaner meter was installed on November 22, 2012 when the site’s flow meter was sent out for calibration. The site’s flow meter was re-installed on December 12, 2012. The flow meter is inspected and cleaned on a quarterly basis and undergoes quarterly field checks performed by a third-party technician, with the last field check occurring within two months prior to the end of the reporting period to meet the requirements of the CAR Protocol. Field checks performed during this reporting period showed the meter to be within the five percent accuracy threshold.


THE CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION REGISTRY IS A PROGRAM OF THE CLIMATE ACTION RESERVE COMMITTED TO SOLVING CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH EMISSIONS ACCOUNTING AND REDUCTION. IT WAS CREATED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN 2001 TO PROMOTE AND PROTECT BUSINESSES’ EARLY ACTIONS TO MANAGE AND REDUCE THEIR GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) EMISSIONS.

Carbon offsetting is the practice of incentivising others to make a carbon saving equivalent to some of the carbon you create. These savings can be made via cleaner energy sources like solar and wind, by planting trees, by switching to cleaner alternative fuels, and by protecting and maintaining the world’s rainforests. The catalyst driving these savings is the carbon credit market. * GHG is measured in tonnes of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide or Equivalent) * 1 Tonne of CO2 = 1 Carbon Credit * The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement overseen by The United Nations which commits industrialized nations including Europe to reduce their GHG (Green House Gases) emissions.
