It has been quiet around here for too long. Sometimes life just happens, gives you new and exciting opportunities and overthrows all your existing plans. But after a long break, we are back at it with a new team and so ready to dive back into the crazy and fun world of fashion and all the new and exciting adventures! We are going to do things a bit differently from now on. The issues will be shorter and more frequent. They wonâ€™t necessarily follow any rules, and you might never know what to expect. We are going to take the freedom to do whatever we want, have fun while doing it and hopefully inspire you. For our new readers, here is a quick recap of what NUDE magazine is all about: We focus on visually stimulating quality content, interviews with inspiring people, editorials and articles about fashion, culture, beauty, health, lifestyle, interior, travel, and whatever we feel like writing about. Our target group are women of all ages, interested in fashion, lifestyle, beauty, culture and all aspects of life. NUDE magazine was established in early 2010 in Iceland and quickly became the leading fashion magazine. A few years back I took a big step, decided to launch an English version and moved the office to Copenhagen. We are still finding our place, but we are full of hope and excitement about the future. HOW IT ALL BEGAN
I was offered the opportunity to visit Kenya as part of a consultancy project for Ethical Fashion Forum in 2007, and it was here that I fell in love with Kenya and the idea of SOKO came into fruition. In 2009, my husband, who is an artist, and I moved from our hectic lives in London to Diani on the coast of Kenya, and that idea turned into a reality. Fashion is just being recognised now for the damaging impact that it is having on communities and the environment, but at the time too little was being done to counteract that. However, I have always felt that fashion had both the power and the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Harnessing my experience in the fashion industry in London, I applied this logic to SOKO and created a company that prioritises fair wages and good working conditions.

Through the network I had built working in the fashion industry in London I was able to secure a meeting with the Buying Director at ASOS. At the time, I had no idea how much of an impact this one meeting would have on SOKO and its story. This relationship has really been instrumental in SOKOâ€™s growth and has allowed us to flourish into the company that we are now.
T H E K U J U W A I N I T I AT I V E A N D T H E WASH PROJEC T
Chronic levels of absenteeism and drought consistently plague Kasigau, where we are based. Our aim with the Kujuwa Initiative is to take small but sustainable steps towards reducing both of these issues. As the project has developed over the past year, we have realised that both the Kujuwa Initiative and WASH are intrinsically linked. Feedback from our project schools has
shown that we can not hope to increase the number of girls going to school by merely providing them with our reusable pads. Most of the schools we work with offer the students little to no private space or water to wash with when changing their pad or more commonly, a piece of old cloth. The hope is that by providing both clean, stable VIP Latrines/toilets, and rainwater catchment infrastructure alongside the reusable pads and menstrual hygiene management training, the girls will be equipped with the tools that they need to attend school on a more regular basis. This project is still in its infancy stage. However, as we develop, we would like to support boys as well as girls in normalising menstruation and ultimately reaching our goal of reducing period poverty in Kasigau.

I think as any entrepreneur would tell you, any day is a pretty hectic one and juggling a business as well as two young children only serve to make it more so. I try to balance the two while working from home, striving to focus on one at a time, rather than dividing my attention between the two, with a 10-minute meditation to start the day. This means having lunch with my son for 45 minutes and making sure that I spend a few hours with both of my children when my daughter is home from school at 5 pm. When I am with my team at SOKO, I do not have a moment to spare, with back to back meetings throughout the day. However, we have just moved to a sisal plantation on the coast and are really relishing the new opportunities this brings as a family, whether it is kayaking in the creek or bike rides around the plantation, there is always something new to discover.

I think one of the main challenges with working in Kenya is that the systems and support networks that you would find in the UK, for example, are limited and often we are paving the way with the work that we are doing – at times this is thriving and excited and at others totally overwhelming.

It has to be our Michelle Obama moment! In 2011, we were still only a team of about ten people and had just produced our first few collections for ASOS Africa, when we saw pictures of Michelle Obama wearing a couple of the items. We couldn’t believe it. My team were convinced that there must be a much larger, more established factory that had made the same clothes like us. It was amazing for myself and the team to feel that our tiny workshop in rural Africa had somehow connected to the world of the First Lady. We will forever feel immensely proud of that moment.
THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE
From a business perspective, my ultimate vision has always been one of empowerment through employment. This means expanding our capacity and continuing to provide more people with sustainable careers. However, SOKO is more than just a clothing manufacturer. I am incredibly excited about all of the possibilities that come with running a Community Trust, and the Kujuwa Initiative is such a dynamic initiative that the opportunities are endless. That being said, if I had to pinpoint a couple of goals, I would love to see our reusable pads become the go-to product in the community, while simultaneously changing the attitudes of men and
providing them with the opportunities to flourish.
THE FIGHT FOR GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS AND STRONG ETHICS W O R K I N T H E W O R L D O F FA S T, C H E A P FA S H I O N
In a world where the consumer is still disconnected from the maker and fashion is seen as disposable, it can occasionally feel like an uphill struggle as a manufacturer to remain competitive. However, the number of ethical brands is growing, and it is becoming more and more fashionable to prioritise good working conditions, something that I can only hope will continue to improve. I am incredibly proud to say that SOKO is a living wage employer, which is an essential benchmark for any company or manufacturer, and alongside the work of the Community Trust, we will continue to strive to empower our local community and improve the conditions in which they operate daily.
HOW HAS THE COMMUNIT Y RESPONDED?
We are lucky to be surrounded by another organisation, called Wildlife Works, who is also a living wage employer, so it is something that the community is starting to view as normal rather an anomaly. What’s more, I live in an incredibly creative community that has a similar ethos to SOKO, so there are a number of ethical brands and producers around. That being said, Kenya and other African countries still have a long way to go in terms of improving working conditions across the board. I can only hope that by creating a small positive change in our community, we can create a larger ripple effect across the fashion industry.
