News Updates from ‘Castle! Beach Volleyball’s 2012 Test Event August saw the Test Event for the 2012 Olympic Beach Volleyball Championships, and what an event it turned out to be! With the (indoor) Volleyball Test Event having been for men’s teams the Beach was for the ladies and not only was the event itself a great Success, but the GB teams excelled themselves, particularly the pairing of Lucy Boulton & Denise Johns – who made it to the semi-finals. Hosted at Horse Guards Parade, i.e. the Queen’s back yard, the test event saw a temporary 3000 seats stadium built with a couple of training courts. In the midst of the London riots the sun shone down and massive crowds came each to watch the matches... no sign of the rouble-makers when there’s Beach Volleyball to watch! When it comes round to the actual Olympic Games in July/August 2012 the stadium will be as big as Wimbledon Centre Court with a 15,000 capacity... London’s sporting public and the Media were in enough of a frenzy over this relatively small event so here at ‘Castle News we think we can all rest assured that the Greatest Show On Earth will be gripped by Beach Volleyball fever! On the court it was popular GB pairing of Boulton/Johns who stole the show to reach the semis – outperforming Dampney/Mullins who are way ahead in the qualification rankings, and beating the Chinese pairing who were Beijing Bronze medallists and currently world ranked 3 in the Quarter Finals! This bodes well for the team who are fighting hard for pint to qualify and be part of the action next Summer! Boulton/Johns play in the bronze medal match at Horseguards parade

News Updates from ‘Castle! New NVL Signings for Castle Men 1 It has been a busy summer for the men’s 1st team... First coach Craig Handford departed to be replaced by the new team of Will Roberts and Dave Lovell, and then the playing personnel started to change to. On the way out were Will Roberts junr (Malory Eagles), and Roo Scott, James Goodwin and Rashad Ali (subject to conditinos) – all to Sheffield to play in the Super 8s (...If only we’d got promotion at the end of last season!). But on the way in were three fantastic new signings: Ryan Heath (libero), Alex Jenkins (setter) and Richard Yates (pass-hitter). All three players are part of the National Academy in Loughborough and current England Junior internationals. Coach Will Roberts commented, “to be able to recruit such outstanding young players is great news as we try to bounce back from just missing promotion last season. Ryan is a superb libero with defensive skills that are Ryan Heath second to none. He and Jenks (who played for NSVC u18 last season and knows the team well) really are classic ‘Castle players – they defend hard and never give up! Richard will be a massive asset for us, he is tall, fast and powerful and will be a real threat to our opponents. Coming from Wessex, Rich knows what it is to be part of a big club so he’ll also fit right in.” The additions to the squad, with the likes of other young players, all homegrown, Sam Allen, Adam Bradbury, Sam Shenton, Iain McKellar and Stew Ross, will make an exciting team to watch this season.

News Updates from ‘Castle! Social Volleyball... back in September! The new ‘Castle Social Volleyball sessions were a great success during May and June, regularly attracting 20-30 players. Whilst a number of these were club members who were already active in the sport and just wanted to keep on playing in the normal quiet months before pre-season, the sessions did encourage new players and re-introduced some former players back into the sport. This was made really evident by the ‘Castle representation at the Whitefield Tournament in Bath. The aim of the social side of the club is to add a further string to the bow of the club and provide opportunities for adults to play volleyball outside of the rigours of the NVL and formal competitive (or traditional) volleyball. It is hoped that not only will former players come back to the club, but new members will join and that all members of the club, whether junior, social or NVL will all come together and support each other and be part of a larger club. After the success of the summer’s experiment Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball is pleased to confirm that Social Volleyball sessions will start again on the 14th September:

Training Programme 2011-12: Fridays Following discussion between the two head coaches Ant Viggars and Will Roberts it has been agreed to make a change to the training programme on Fridays in the 2011-12 season – this new programme will be in place from Friday 9th September 2011. This should help reverse the decline in the number of young boys staying on in Madeley until 6pm on a Friday to train. It is hoped that this change will help players to develop in 3 main ways: 1. By having girls and boys train in the hall at the same time will help their learning 2. Younger players will be motivated by the prospect of being invited to stay-on to train in the older session 3. There will be an even better ‘club feel’ to sessions. Training will now be: - 3.30pm-4.30pm – under 12 (year 5-7) boys and girls - 4.30pm-6.00pm – under 14 (years 8 and 9) boys and girls - 6.00pm-7.30pm – under 16 (years 10 and 11) boys and girls

News Updates from ‘Castle! Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Results Update In the July edition we reported on the success of the ‘Castle lads at the Sandbanks Beach Volleyball Classic, but unbeknown to ‘Castle News we also had success in the under 16 girls competition! Harriet Roberts teamed up with Jade Butcher from Redhill to form a West Midlands super-team that went all the way to the u16 girls final! Unfortunately for the girls they lost in 3 sets but did a fantastic job and only went down 15-12 in the decider!
