We fought for children’s online safety

Throughout 2022, with your support, we’ve worked hard to make sure there’s an Online Safety Bill that does everything it can to protect children online.

Online grooming crimes have risen, but with your help we’re doing everything we can to make sure the Bill’s passed this year. We won’t stop until every child is safe online.

1. Online grooming crimes recorded by police have risen by more than 80% in four years
We kept children safe through our Helpline Last year, the NSPCC Helpline responded to almost 67,000 contacts from people with concerns about a child’s welfare. 2. The NSPCC are so important. They have years and years of experience in child safety so I really trust them.” Debra, who contacted our Helpline “

speak out Thanks to you, we’ve been able to continue delivering our virtual Speak out Stay safe programme to schools. And your support means we can continue with our plans to go back into schools this year. 3. Last year, we reached nearly 900,000 children in over 3,800 schools through our Speak out Stay safe online programme

We closed the loophole!

In June, the Positions of Trust law was finally extended. It’s now illegal for sports coaches and faith leaders to sexually engage with anyone under the age of 18 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Thanks to you, and our years of campaigning, we’re helping young people take part in activities they love, safely.

Closing the loophole in the law means a huge amount to me… No child should have to fend off the sexual advances of an adult they trust.”

We helped boys open up

Boys are less likely to contact Childline when they experience suicidal thoughts. So we wanted to encourage them to reach out with our We All Feel It campaign. It led to Childline’s online mental health hub seeing a 195% increase in users!

You’re helping us be here for these young people – 24/7, every day of the year.

5. Over the first 14 days of the campaign, we saw a 33% increase in boys contacting us by email

Mental or emotional health remains the top concern for children and young people contacting Childline. This year, thanks to your support, we can make sure we’re here for them.

We helped Childline be there for children
6. Over 200 thousand Childline counselling sessions last year
If you’ve been helped by Childline in the past, and would like to share your story with us to help raise awareness of our work, campaign for changes in the law and raise vital funds, please email casestudies2@nspcc.org.uk
