With the weather turning colder, many restaurants are re-inventing their menus for winter, bringing out warming and comforting dishes to ease into the chilly months of the year. (as well as Chinese turnip and soft rice noodles). Entree #2 — Vietnamese spring rolls In lieu of dessert after the meal, we opted for another snack-sized addition to the menu — Vietnamese style spring rolls. Anyone who has never had these before should definitely give them a try. Wrapped in rice ‘tortillas’ which are so thin as to be transparent, these little bundles of meat and crunchy fresh vegetables are the south-east Asian equivalent of sushi. But the changes afoot at Dargaville’s Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee restaurant are a little different from most, and hinge upon new ingredients and spices, sourced during the proprietors’ recent trip to Auckland for Thai new year celebrations. We tried a selection of dishes from their winter selection. Entree — Rice noodle soup with chicken and vegetables. This arrived piping hot and absolutely stuffed full of fresh green veg and a generous helping of tender chicken pieces. The soup itself is not like a thick, European-style broth — it is light yet flavourful, taking up the essence of the chicken and all those exotic greens
