When the legendary ‘log o’ wood’ visited Dargaville last week, it was part of a triumphant tour of Northland, borne by the victorious Taniwha. District Council members. It revealed a modern facility with modular seating, ablutions for players, twin fullsized courts and a covered entrance vestibule.

The position of this new structure would place it behind the existing Sportsville buildings, pushing out toward Pioneer Park and linking to the facilities there. It was suggested this space could also host concerts, trade shows and cultural events. ¢

Paparoa Oakleigh Road upcoming closure Paparoa Oakleigh Road will have a full 24-hour closure, including weekends, between 3208 and 3065 Paparoa Oakleigh Road, from 6am on Wednesday 2 September.

The closure is required to allow council roading crews to complete the next stage of rehabilitation and stabilisation works.

The road is expected to reopen by 23 September at 6pm, weather permitting.

p Te Kōpuru youngsters have new options for recreation and sports thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the Te Kōpuru Domain Steering Committee. Every Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm, students finishing school can drop in to the domain for a round of fun, friendly games, enabled by a whole container full of sporting equipment and a wide-open space in which to play. It’s free, open to everyone, and all-inclusive; a great community effort for spring.

Harbour rescue ‘investing in nature’

A symposium by the Sustainable Business Network has heard a report at the halfway mark of the $200 million 10-year restoration of the Kaipara Harbour that says the project is an investment in future prosperity and resilience, as much as it creates positive environmental outcomes.

Gary Morris turned 88 this year, but he’s not one to put his feet up as he contemplates a career spanning 55 years in real estate; instead, he’s doubling down on his ongoing mission of community support.

With what’s very likely to be the longest and most illustrious career in real estate still going strong, Gary says that he loves his job. However, the highlight of his fiveplus decades in the profession is the way he’s been able to assist others to achieve their dreams.

This has included support for Maungatūroto soccer players, marchers and motorcyclists, as well as aid for Auckland’s specialist burns unit, and a whole lot of gigantic teddy bears given away for good causes. It’s also seen Gary champion the dreams of a local up-and-coming motorsport legend.

“One of my highlights in my whole career is supporting Ben Morrison,” says Gary. “I was one of the first to put my name on his car, and he’s doing very well both here and in the US. He comes to visit me every year, and tells me that if it wasn’t for the ‘little guys’ giving their support when he started he would never have got so far.”

The faith of a man, who has by all accounts sold more than 1,000 properties, gave Ben a valuable initial boost. It’s a reflection of the trust Gary credits with starting his odyssey in real estate. He was noticed for being a hardworking sales rep for Electrolux vacuum cleaners, and worked for Jennifer Williams, a pioneer for women in the professions who was at one time the youngest licensed agent in Silverdale.

Now Gary is the oldest — and most experienced — agent in real estate, having subdivided 300 properties in Kaipara alone, and continuing to add to his four-figure total.

On Saturday, September 19, Team Morris will host a fun day in Maungatūroto, with classic cars, a barbecue, giveaways and a visit from Ben. Gary’s also shouting all-comers free Mr Whippy ice cream, right out the front of First National Kaipara from 10am to 2pm. Come and say congratulations to a local legend. ¢

Indian Consulate visits Mayor Larsen welcomed delegates from the Consulate General of India at a Dargaville meeting last Tuesday, the third time that high-level talks on commercial prosperity have been held between Kaipara and the consulate.

“We were proud to co-host an excellent evening discussing the opportunities the New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement creates for our local businesses,” said Mr Larsen.

“Kaipara may be a small district, but we think big when it comes to building relationships, and some of the greatest opportunities for economic development and growth start with a conversation. It was a privilege to welcome representatives from the Indian Consulate and across Northland to Dargaville to share ideas, make connections and explore how we can work together.”

Rates set at four per cent From July 1 2027, councils across New Zealand will need to be in line with Kaipara, at least in terms of rates rises.

The central government announced legislation capping rates rises at four per cent from next year, as a measure to curb the cost of living crisis.

“For too long, ratepayers have been hit with steep and unexpected rates increases, adding pressure to household budgets at a time many New Zealanders are already feeling the squeeze,” said Local Government Minister Simon Watts.

“Under this legislation, councils will be required to keep annual rates increases within an initial target range of two to four per cent, putting a brake on excessive increases and giving ratepayers greater certainty.” ¢

Last week’s meeting of the Kaipara District Council saw a record number of public groups coming to speak and petition the mayor and elected members for sporting and recreational space, funding and support.

Mangawhai pickleball players, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai Scouts, the Maungatūroto Country Club, Friends of the Maungatūroto Library, Sportsville Dargaville and the Mangawhai Activity Zone all presented on the topic of civic recreation, with a large emphasis on new sporting facilities.

While the extensive double-indoorcourt concept for Sportsville phase two in Dargaville is covered elsewhere in this edition, the particulars of these other public requests for KDC assistance in boosting recreational opportunities paint a picture of a growing district with a wide range of community clubs working passionately to promote better lifestyles.

Pickleball advocates and players from the east coast made their play for land to be put aside for a club for their sport, one of the fastest growing in the world.

“People who may not have played sports in years meet and make friends in weeks at pickleball,” said Bridget Jochins, who addressed the council alongside Gary Hay. “The nature of the game means it can be played intergenerationally. We know that exercise promotes physical wellbeing, and regular social interaction promotes mental wellbeing.”

search of a home for their club. A similar group in nearby Wellsford is said to boast 250 members. The pickleball players are confident they can source money to build courts if the KDC earmarks land for them to grow.

Pickleball’s popularity was also spoken of when Ken Rayward from the Mangawhai Activity Zone made his address, announcing forthcoming plans for big expansions at the popular Mangawhai park.

“The relationship we have and enjoy very much with the KDC has evolved over

the years. We have proof that the council can work with a group of volunteers on long-term plans and bring them to fruition,” said Mr Rayward.

He revealed that work has been ongoing in the background following a survey undertaken by the Mangawhai Matters group, which indicated that onein-three Mangawhai visitors stop off at the MAZ. From this survey, new amenities have been isolated and selected, including three-on-three basketball courts, a five-aside football pitch, a permanent sound shell stage for outdoor concerts, a tai chi

exercise walking path suitable for seniors, and, topically, four pickleball courts.

The Friends of Maungatūroto Library did not seek space for action sports, but for quieter recreation. With the loss of their building, the group has requested that a new library and community hub should be accounted for in the forthcoming Long Term Plan.

“The loss of our building has given us an opportunity to think about the future of library services in Maungatūroto,” said citizen’s advocate Paul Chambers.

“People want to keep the strengths of a community-based library, but also want a modern library.”

To this end, he and his group proposed a hybrid model, blending the work of volunteers with KDC support in a new building, which could also serve as a community IT hub with free Wi-Fi and terminals. Honouring the previous historic library building, and the legacy of libraries in Maungatūroto stretching back more than 150 years, is also a priority in the community.

The Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scout Group is another recreation association with a long history. They have been promoting the development of young east coasters into capable, confident and civic-minded adults for many decades. The followers of Baden-Powell carry on his ethos of

Thespians from Dargaville and Ōtamatea have progressed to the second round of TheatreFest 2026, with two plays making the cut to be adjudicated at a regional level.

adventure, public service and outdoors activity, and currently, they meet at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex.

However, a custom-made den for the Keas, Cubs, Scouts, Rangers and Venturers would allow for outdoor and camping equipment to be stored on-site, as well as for a space where the history of the movement could be celebrated with wall displays, photos and art made by scouting participants. This is what the group, which has a waiting list of young people wanting to join, asked the council to help facilitate.

One of the biggest collaborative groups in Kaipara, when it comes to recreation, is the Maungatūroto Country Club, home of theatre, rugby, motocross, a walking trail, and recently part of the free-fruit-andveggies edible village project.

“We have a large number of volunteers who give hundreds of hours of their time to

make Maungatūroto a great place to live,” said club representative Jackie Fanning.

However, with most of the club’s funds retrenched into providing facilities for the community, those volunteers are stretched thin. Assistance from the KDC to help mow the fields and lawns, which make up part of this 60-hectare site was requested, as this could become a major drain on club coffers without aid.

With seven recreational and sporting groups approaching the Kaipara District Council in the lead-up to spring, last week’s meeting served as a bellwether for a very active community. Combined with the possibilities advanced by Sportsville, the facilities listed here would allow for hundreds more local people, young and old, to enjoy socialising, exercising and getting out from behind screens in the near future. ¢

More than just a money-making idea, for 25-year-old Maddy Maximiano crocheting is a passion that she has transformed into homemade and custom art.

A move to Mititai In June 1921, photographer RH Stark captured the move of the former Aratapu Anglican Church being barged across the Northern Wairoa River.

It was renamed All Saints Anglican Church and consecrated in March 1922 by the Anglican Bishop of Auckland Dr AW Averill. ‘In the afternoon he consecrated the church grounds at Mititai, and held a Confirmation service, which was attended by 165 people, who came from Hore Hore, Arapohue, Aratapu and Te Kopuru and the adjacent settlements. At the conclusion of the service tables were taken out on the lawn, and the visitors were entertained at tea by the Mititai church people.’

Whangārei mayor Ken The use of Couper speaks on debt 1080 in forests Kaipara, through its council, should be commended on achieving relatively low debt levels when compared with other councils around the country.

This did not happen by chance. It happened through decisions on Kaipara Council’s part but largely through the collaborative approach to working with other Northland councils.

There is often a trade-off between debt and progress, and different councils take different approaches.

As we know, infrastructure accom­ modates growth but also comes at a cost. There is a constant tension between asking today’s generation to pay for assets and infrastructure and spreading that cost across future generations.

The debt as sociated with freshwater and wastewater is one example of this. The government set a direction in 2023 and asked councils to work collectively within their regions, and Northland’s three district councils chose to do that together. It was not always easy, and at times, it tested every relationship involved, but we arrived, and largely agreed on the foundations.

The formation of Northland Waters will move most of Kaipara District

Council’s debt into Northland Waters, and the result is that Kaipara District Council’s balance sheet looks very healthy. Kaipara water users will, of course, still be paying this debt through charges to the water company, just as Whangārei and Far North water users will be paying their share, with the ring-fencing model keeping the three council’s assets and debt completely separate.

This allows the benefits of economies of scale to be achieved for all councils and Northland as a region.

Nor thland Waters worked because all three of us stayed at the table from beginning to end.

That consistency is what made the outcome hold together, and it is what will be needed as the wider local government reform conversation continues.

While questions about wider refo rm re m a i n, c o n ti n u e d collaboration as we enter the detailed design phase is imperative for better outcomes for all of Northland.

I received an email. It read in part: ‘My reason for contacting you is to advise that a joint project between the Northland Regional Council and Piroa Conservation Trust to drop 1080 by drone on our land (Section 6, Block X, Waipu Survey District) will take place in late August/early September, weather dependent.’

The clever men — and we know they are clever because they tell us so — work in offices and have nice houses in the suburbs.

Although I have been called a ‘smart ass’, I am a non-clever bloke who works outside and lives in the bush.

These clever ones have decided that it is a good idea to use robots to drop toxic substances into native forests. All paid for by non-clever ratepayers. What could go wrong ?

Not being clever, I don’t have the answer.

I do, however, have questions.

The robots, of course, will not be dropping their poison within my boundaries, drawn by other clever men in offices. They know not to do this because I have told them not to.

This simple old bushman doesn’t like poison.

Because as the name implies, it is poisonous.

The robots, the clever men assert, will not be spreading their poison near waterways.

The robots must also be very clever to achieve this in mountainous country, where there is a waterway in every gully and springs pop up on ridges and hillsides everywhere.

When the not-infrequent torrents of rain hit these mountains, it washes trees, large rocks and tons of silt into the waterways. Are poison pellets immune to this?

Back in the early 1990s, the clever people in the Kaipara District Council contracted the manual spreading of the same 1080 poison through these forested hills. I was much more clever then and supported the idea. The bush was deathly quiet for several years after.

At present, rodent numbers are at epidemic proportions. Last week, I trapped six. Five adult Rattus rattus and one adult Rattus norwegicus. Possum numbers, though, are down. Due, I think, to the efforts of an enthusiastic local possum plucker who accounted for the best part of 300 off the front blocks. Myself and the dog have also shot and caught a few respectively.

I used to have a semi-resident morepork here at home. He would sit and call to his mates across the valley. Since the laying of poison on the adjoining block I’ve not heard a single one. These are just observations, not of a clever man, but of a man who actually lives here.

Whilst wise men observe creation and learn, clever men hire bulldozers and build subdivisions. I’m glad I’m not a clever man.

Boaties crossing the Mangawhai bar this spring and summer have a new backstop for communications safety; a Very High Frequency (VHF) channel on which they can get in touch with the Coastguard.

The new VHF 74 channel is now operational, and it covers the Mangawhai inlet and bar, adding another layer of safety for sailors making what can be a tricky crossing. Until the Coastguard took this initiative there was little or no VHF coverage on the bar or estuary, meaning boaties needing to log or close a bar crossing report had to rely on their cellphones.

“The brief for this build was to be a simple way to provide VHF coverage for the Mangawhai bar and inlet, primarily for bar crossings and trip reports in and out of the heads, to support the new unit,” says Coastguard technology manager James Turner. “VHF 74 is designated nationally as a Coast-to-Ship working channel, so it was an appropriate and available frequency to use for this kind of local coverage.

“Given the challenges of the Mangawhai bar and inlet, having a dedicated local VHF channel means boaties have a direct, reliable way to log a trip report before heading out across the bar, as well as

giving our volunteers the best chance of reaching them quickly if something goes wrong.”

The VHF transceiver driving this new service is located at the Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club. Its activation comes in step with the growth of Coastguard Mangawhai, which became fully operational this year. The channel is monitored 24/7 by the Coastguard’s National Operations Centre, with Coastguard Mangawhai’s own rescue vessel also listening in whenever it’s crewed. ¢

From Monday, September 7 to Sunday, September 13, people around New Zealand will be talking about a confronting, inevitable and ultimately essential topic; the realities of death, dying and leaving behind a legacy for loved ones.

Dying Matters Week is all about helping folks to make informed and meaningful decisions, so it’s no surprise that those

local professionals involved with planning for a time when we’re not among friends and family anymore are active across Kaipara. Karen Williamson is coordinating efforts to host death cafes, symposia and visits to places like Hospice Kaipara for 2026, her third year of helping out with Dying Matters Week.

“The previous years I ran a free workshop, and saw first hand how valuable this was to people. This year, I’ve put my hand up to be Kaipara coordinator,” says Karen. “It’s important that everyone has an equal opportunity to attend, especially in our rural areas.”

That sense of accessibility means that while local residents are freely able to attend the big Shaping Your Legacy Expo, hosted at Kensington Stadium in Whangārei on September 10 and 11, there are also smaller, more local events planned for Kaipara towns, from the east coast to the west.

“Given a safe and comfortable space to discuss death, people do want to talk about it,” says Karen. “There’s a growing

realisation that if you have things in place before you die, there is so much less stress for both you and your family. It’s about freedom to choose.”

Karen says there’s a cultural sea change in the way we look at death and dying, moving away from funerals being one-size-fits-all events with prescribed rituals and observances. Personality, culture and choice play a bigger part than ever before in modern funeral planning, and there’s no need to spend thousands to have a memorial of love, respect and healthy grieving.

Karen came to the discussion through her volunteer work for hospice, and then through her advocacy of using shrouds for burial. This ancient method of gently wrapping the deceased, rather than using a casket, is both ecologically friendly, in line with many cultural burial practices, and provides less of a barrier between those passed on and their loved ones during final farewells.

With shrouding as part of the choices involved in funeral planning, it was natural

Confessions from the grave, pranks from the deceased or a soft whisper from the dearly departed, there are people globally who take on a different role when it comes to funeral services.

From delivering a phone to the coffin, to confessing a crime that laid on your conscience, there are people out there who speak on behalf of the dead, and sometimes rattle cages.

Across the Tasman, Bill Edgar has the interesting job of crashing funerals and is the bold mouthpiece for the person in the coffin. Hired to investigate a dying man’s finances, his client said that he’d seen people not show their personal eulogy.

Bill jokingly offered to crash the funeral and say it on his behalf. The result? Bill attended the funeral and completed his client’s wishes — interrupting his ‘best mate’s’ speech for hitting on his wife.

Some of the most popular requests he has had were confessions of infidelity and kicking unwanted guests and vultures from funerals. There are some heartfelt moments, too, like delivering an electronic chessboard in the checkmate position to a father who used to play chess with his son.

Beef + Lamb NZ reports the intent is for FWFPs to replace the old system of rules and consents, which was muchderided as a level of baffling ‘red tape’ within the industry. However, the group notes that most sheep and beef farmers don’t need consent to farm, so they have been working hard to ensure the farm plan requirements clearly differentiate between levels of risk.

Feedback from farmers supports the adage used in their recent communique to farmers: ‘tailored approaches will always be better than costly blunt national and regional rules.’

“Beef + Lamb NZ had been pushing for an exemption for low-risk extensive farms as we believe the administrative burden for these properties to complete a Freshwater Farm Plan wasn’t proportionate with the low risk they pose,” said B+LNZ chair Kate Acland.

“Although we were unsuccessful in achieving the exemption, the framework proposed by the government, especially around certification and auditing expectations, is much better than it was.”

The detail of the emerging FWFP scheme, which pleased the red sector advocates most, was news that certified and audited farm plans will now only apply to farmers undertaking specific highrisk activities.

These include large amounts of winter grazing or extensive irrigation. Certification is now granular, as well — only the part of the farm where high-risk activities take

place will require cert. That’s important, because in the majority of cases sheep and beef farms would only use a small portion of their available land for such activities. At the same time, unnecessary complex mapping requirements have also been removed.

“All farms that meet the threshold will still need to prepare and hold a farm plan, and declare it to their council, but they will not need it certified or audited if they fit into the lower-risk category,” said Agriculture Minister Todd McClay.

“Most sheep and beef farmers will still need to have a plan for how they manage risks to freshwater, but it will not automatically need to be certified or audited under the changes announced — reducing unnecessary and unreasonable compliance costs. These plans should be able to be completed by farmers themselves,” said Ms Acland.

There’s more to come, with details emerging about how the government will create an equivalency pathway for industry-based freshwater plans, and how the FWFP regime will interlock with the other aspects of the replacement to the Resource Management Act in a wider context.

“While today’s announcement is a positive step forward, we still need to further analyse details which will be clearer once the government releases its National Direction and National Standards — those are where the rubber hits the road,” Acland said. ¢

The Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking applicants for a scholarship programme helping to boost on-the-ground support for farmers and growers with six opportunities of $5,000 each.

“There’s a total of $30,000 for the 2027 academic year,” said MPI’s director of On Farm Support Chad Hoggard. “Applicants must have completed, or be completing, their first year of study and be enrolled in relevant agriculture, horticulture, science, forestry or viticulture degrees.

“The On Farm Support Science Scholarships back tertiary students with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the primary industry advisory sector. It’s the fourth year we have run the programme. Ensuring farmers and growers are supported to boost productivity and profitability are essential to double the value of exports.”

One of the 2026 scholarship recipients, Massey University student Ella Hogan aspires to work as a farm adviser in the sheep and beef sector.

“Receiving the scholarship has given me confidence that I’m heading in the right direction. The financial support has made a huge difference, helping with study-related costs and travel expenses.”
