BYRON BAY WRITERS FESTIVAL PROGRAM
Feature Events SATURDAY 8 AUGUST 1.00pm – 2.00pm The Colourful, Enthralling and Inspiring Story of Protest in Australia – Clive Hamilton Lone Goat Gallery, corner Lawson St & Fletcher St (Byron Bay Library), Byron Bay Cost: Gold coin donation on entry; bookings essential Introduced by Antonia Case, from New Philosopher and Womankind Australia has a rich and fascinating history of protest, not least the huge upsurge of rebellion dating from the late 1960s ushering the nation into the modern world. From sit-down strikes to occupations, from confrontations on Anzac Day to alternative Bicentennial ceremonies, from hoax media releases that stopped the stock exchange to blockades with rubber duckies, and from monster petitions to burning draft cards, the creativity of activists has proven endless. This talk will be a preview of a book commissioned by the National Library of Australia in which Clive Hamilton tells the story of protest by drawing on the Library’s image archives. It will gallop through a few of the most interesting, significant and quirky protests that have punctuated Australia’s social history. And will pose the question: ‘Is the era when protest can change the nation now past?’
