in the Freie Universit채t. Berlin. The project is located within the main campus of the Freie Universit채t (FU), in southwestern Berlin. This University is the largest of the four universities in the city and one of the largest in Germany, with 37,825 students. The main building where the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters is located, was constructed in 1963 from the competition won by Candilis, Josic, Woods (members of the Team X movement). This building was conceived as a place of intellectual exchange, where the corridors are considered as streets along which the activities of the university are organized. The project proposes the creation of a School of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts, as an extension of the main building of the Freie Universit채t. It is designed according to the urban context within which is located, including university buildings, single family houses and botanical gardens.

FREIE UNIVERSITÄT

The Freie Universität is composed of amoeba-isolated units scattered in a suburban neighborhood of single family houses isolated, so each unit operates autonomously forming a separate unit relationships between students.

According with that, the frame desing comprise four main corridors interconnected with other perpendicular and secondary corridors as streets that link different spaces of the university.

The main building designed by Josic, Candilis and Woods (members of TEAM X) is the amoeba unit more representative for its size and the heart of the university for its position. The architects tried to end the situation of isolated institutional buildings, seeking a richer relationship between campus buildings.

Open spaces of the Freie Universität. Team X architects designed open spaces related with the mentioned corridors frame, understood as a continuous figure of the public inside and outside. So the classrooms are are located in the space between the corridors and that figure.

Pattern/frame design of the Freie Universität and circulations. The main university building was a social experiment for the architects, who asked themselves the meaning of university and designed a installation capable of accommodating the various relationships between the individual and the collective, tranquility and activity, isolation and changing information.

SCHOOL OF ARTS

The location of the School of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts in relation to other buildings and its morphology serve the fundamental intentions as relate and encourage exchanges between the different university buildings, students and neighbors, offering a new and interesting situation for them. Thereby, the idea of the design of the main building by Candilis, Josic and Woods as a city is extended beyong the building itself. The design is developed with two levels in the northwest of the main building, in contact with the upper edge of the mentioned building. The classrooms, seminars and workshops proposed are distributed in several elongated strips that organize the movements in the building and also the connection between the different university buildings and open spaces. Open spaces, both outdoor and indoor spaces, are an essential item in this school, in order to develop creative exchanges between students.

The elongated strips mentioned above distribute these open spaces between them, including the large workshop rooms for painting, designing and sculpting, the gardens, patios and space for showing and discussing the academic work. The university buildings located opposite the main building and art school are kept changing its use, proposing a services for students and neighbors, as library, bookshop, snack-bar, screening room, exhibition,... Project items are shown in the picture: 1. FREIE UNIVERSITAT 2. SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND FINE ARTS 3. EXISTING UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS, CONSERVATED WITH CHANGE OF USE 4. WOODLAND 5. Pattern/frame design of the Freie Universit채t and circulations. the frame desing comprise four main corridors interconnected with other perpendicular and secondary corridors as streets that link different spaces of the university.

Road traffic. The major roads are indicated in scheme in orange. The dark lines show different controlled access of the Freie Universit채t, art school and the other university buildings associated.

Vegetation. Existing woodland and green spaces are extended as well between the buildings and into the patios (of) art school.

Open spaces of the Freie Universit채t. Team X architects designed open spaces related with the mentioned corridors frame, understood as a continuous figure of the public inside and outside. So the classrooms are located in the space between the corridors and that figure.

Access/entrances of/to the university and movements of the students in the art school. Main steps of the Freie Universitat are preserved and extended enhancing the connection between students, university buildings and open spaces.

Lighting. The light entering art school occurs through three systems: Firstly, through the opening of the school in its northwest and southeast facades and courtyards to the workshop spaces, exhibition and meeting. Secondly, throught Northwest oriented skylights inclined 45 degrees in the classrooms. Finally, the corridors are illuminated by strips of direct light through skylights on deck.

Connections between universitary buildings: The mentioned open spaces of the main building are prolonged into the art school and beyond it, linking by corridors which continue the pattern created by Candilis Josic and Woods.

Classrooms and longitudinal circulation: The ends of the elongated strips include theoretical classrooms, conferences and seminars (mustard), while the three main bands (yellow) include workshop for students and tutoring. The accesses are through the longitudinal corridors .

Open spaces in Art school: The yards provide a quiet green space where the communication between artists happen. The interstitial spaces between university buildings are also a meeting point for students and neighbors, including public uses, such as snack bar, exhibitions, performance, screenings, bookstore and gardens.

Open spaces and trasversal connection: Between the elongated strips of classrooms and workshop are the yards and open spaces (indoor and outdoor) including meeting point, exhibition and discussion (red). Art workshops (orange) and libraries (yellow) are located surrounded by courtyards. It is proposed a trasversal connection between theses uses.
