Indo-Pakistan War 1947-1948 Indo-Pakistan War of 19471948, was the first war for Kashmir. The first war fought by the newly independent nations India and Pakistan. Pakistan led the war a few weeks after the independence as an attempt to capture Kashmir. Kashmir was located in between India and Pakistan. Though it was ruled by Hindu Maharaja at that it was mostly occupied by Muslims. The Hindu Maharaja

of Kashmir was in confusion to join India or Pakistan. As Kashmir was occupied by the majority of Muslims, Pakistanis wanted Kashmir to be part of Pakistan permanently. But the majority of the population of Kashmir did not want to join Pakistan and instead wanted to join India or else as an independent state. The frustrated Pakistanis started conflicts and made a timetable to capture Srinagar the capital of Kashmir, within a week.

Pakistani efforts of occupying the South Kashmir were not fully successful. They failed to occupy most of the towns. During the war, 1500 soldiers died during the war and Pakistan was able to gain roughly two-fifths of Kashmir which is named as Azad Kashmir which means free
