Welcoming the participants, the Indian Ambassador to the United States, Harsh Vardhan Shringla noted that yoga is widely embraced by the American people. A 2016 survey showed that there were 36.7 million Yoga practitioners in the United States making America the second home for Yoga. 14

“We are very happy with the support and participation that we saw today. The participants participated in real zeal and enthusiasm. Desert Puts Spotlight on How PUNJABIS

RISK LIFE to Reach UNITED STATES The recent death of a six-year-old Gurpreet Kaur in Arizona desert has put the spotlight on the common practice of Punjabis taking the help of unscrupulous travel agents to enter the USA. WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM | JULY 2019

Gurpreet Kaur, a Punjabi girl died of heat stroke in an Arizona desert recently after her mother allegedly left her with other migrants and went searching for water. According to reports by American news agencies, Gurpreet and her mother were two of five Indians who were trying to enter the country through Lukeville town, where they were dropped by “human smugglers”. The United States has over 250,000 Punjabis, many of whom were Sikhs who first settled in California’s Central Valley to do agricultural work. These days a large number of Punjabis are entering North America from Mexico through ‘donkey flights’, paying huge amounts of money. Law enforcement agencies have little control over this racket and around a dozen people have either died or gone missing on the way.

Sometimes even fake documents are provided to these migrants at the time of traveling,” said a police officer.

Similar Cases in the past Few Years On August 21, 2018, 18-yearold Davinderpal Singh from Begowal town in Kapurthala district had died of starvation

in a Mexico forest while trying to get into the USA via Moscow, Greece, then Italy, claimed his family. He had left his home on June 13, 2018, and landed in Mexico on July 1. After July 6, his family could not reach him. Sukhwinder Singh, Davinderpal’s father, said they had paid Rs 24 lakh to a Hoshiarpur-based agent who had promised to take their son directly to the USA. He said that the agent had taken money in two installments of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 14 lakh. Kapurthala police had booked the agent, but no further action was taken, he said, adding that Davinderpal died of

On May 30, 2016, 15-yearold Ravinder Singh from Salempur village of Hoshiarpur district, drowned in the All-American Canal just north of the U.S.Mexico border, in Calexico, California, while illegally entering the United States. His photos were published in American newspapers, seeking assistance to identify the body. One of his uncles in the USA identified him from a bracelet with a Sikh religious symbol and a partially amputated finger.

Gurpal Singh, Ravinder’s father, and an exserviceman said he had sent his son through an agent of Nangli village by paying Rs 28 lakh. The family came to know about his death 33 days after it happened. In January 2016, two youths from Kapurthala also reportedly drowned in the Atlantic sea while traveling by boat along the Colombian/Panama border (South America). Kapurthala police had arrested some local agents, but there was no further development in the case. In the same year, a Punjab police officer from Tanda

In December 2017, five youths from Doaba went missing on their way to America. The families had paid Rs 12 lakh in advance to travel agents. The remaining Rs 23 lakh each was to be paid after they landed in the USA.

“My brother left home on May 27, 2017, and an agent of Mehandipur village had told us that he will reach the USA in five days. We last spoke to my brother on August 2, 2017, when he was still on his way,” said Satwinder Kaur, sister of Inderjit Singh (22) of Abdullapur village in Hoshiarpur district. 20 agents who had no licenses for operating travel agencies. They were booked for cheating and under the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Act. However, most of them are still at large.

In February last year, 50 Sikhs were put in jail in Oregon USA for the same reason. The North America Punjabi Association’s (NAPA) executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said hundreds of people from Punjab are entering the U.S. through Mexico and are getting caught by police. “We have been taking up their cases to get them released from jail,” he added. Since the Malta boat tragedy in 1996 in which 283 youths, mostly Punjabis, were killed, 65 youths have gone missing en-route to Spain and USA between 2002 and 2010.

SUBMIT 5-YEAR SOCIAL MEDIA HISTORY FOR EXTREME VETTING Under the new rule put forth by the United States, virtually all the applicants of the U.S. visas should now have to provide information details of their social media handles going back five years. The new rule is expected to affect nearly 15 million people annually.

The move is to enhance vetting of foreign nationals and to screen out terrorists and other dangerous individuals seeking entry into the United States. Under a new policy adopted by the State Department on Saturday, the visa applicants, including temporary visitors, will be required to list their social media identifiers in a dropdown menu including some other personal information.

“As we’ve seen around the world in recent years, social media can be a major forum for terrorist sentiment and activity. This will be a vital tool to screen out terrorists, public safety threats, and other dangerous individuals from gaining immigration benefits and setting foot on U.S. soil.”

If an applicant doesn’t use social media, they have an option to say that. However, if a visa applicant lies about social media use, they could face “serious immigration consequences” as a result, a U.S. Department of State official told a media outlet. As of now, the drop-down menu only includes major social media websites, but the applicants soon will be able to list all sites that they use. “This is a critical step forward in establishing enhanced vetting of foreign nationals seeking entry into the United States,” the official said.

The policy originates from a March 2017 executive order issued by President Donald Trump intended to put “extreme vetting” into place. Earlier, social media information was asked of only certain individuals whose applications required further review. Now the information is required as part of all immigrant (form DS-260) and nonimmigrant (form DS-160) online visa applications. A high volume of Indian applications is likely to be impacted by the new proposal.

The social media identifiers will be embodied in a background check review against watchlists generated by the United States government. In the near future, applicants will also be required to turn more extensive information on their travel history.

Processing times for visas to the United States are likely to go up significantly following the implementation of a new rule since last week requiring applicants to declare their social media profiles for the last five years. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had called the proposal “ineffective and deeply problematic” when it was initially proposed by the State Department in 2018. NRI Investment in

Mutual Funds in India

Process, Regulations, and More Most Indians migrate abroad in search of better opportunities. Unsurprisingly, many harbor the dream of coming back one day. A majority has dependents in their home country. In such scenarios, making investments in India is inevitable. 22

Certainly, NRIs can invest in mutual funds in India as long as they adhere to the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). A mutual fund in your home country can give you a diversified portfolio with the desired mix of debt and equity securities. Even if you are risk-averse and want a fixed income investment avenue, the Indian debt market comes with higher interest rates. You may start with equity funds, debt funds or hybrid funds.

1. How Can NRIs Benefit from Mutual Fund Investments? As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Indian economy attracts thousands of investors from abroad. Given below are some of the benefits NRIs can

enjoy by investing in Indian mutual funds. A. Easy to Manage Funds Online from Anywhere With the option of investing online, it is easier to track and manage your mutual fund from the residence country too. Investors can buy, redeem, switch as well as opt for systematic transfer or withdrawals online. No need to give cheques, make DDs, fill in physical forms or even be in the same country! You will receive regular account statements (CAS) via email. Asset Management Companies also post portfolio disclosures online to keep investors informed. B. Scope for More Profits from Rupee Appreciation

If the INR value has hiked on the resident country’s currency, it means more profits for the investor. For instance, if an NRI from the UK invests 1000 pounds in a mutual fund in India at an exchange rate of Rs. 100 to 1 pound. Even with possible depreciation, the investor can reap good returns. NRIs and PIOs can also get the same benefits by investing in India-based mutual funds in their own country of residence.

2. What Is the Investment Procedure for NRIs in India?

Asset Management Companies in India cannot accept investment in foreign currency. For this, the first step is to open an NRO account, NRE account or a Foreign Currency NonResident (FCNR) account with an Indian bank. You can invest by any of the below methods. A. Self/Direct One can carry out transactions, debiting or crediting through normal banking channels. Your application with the required KYC details must indicate

that the investment is on a repatriable or nonrepatriable basis. KYC documents include a recent photograph, certified copies of PAN card, passport, residence proof (outside India), and bank statement. The bank may require an in-person verification which you can comply by visiting the Indian Embassy in your resident country. B. Via Power of Attorney Another easier but common method is to have someone else invest on your behalf. Mutual fund companies

allow Power of Attorney (PoA) holders to invest on your behalf and take other decisions pertaining to your investments. However, signatures of both the NRI investor and PoA should be present on the KYC documents to make the investment.

3. Mutual Fund Regulations for NRIs A. KYC for NRIs To complete the KYC process, submit a copy of your passport – relevant pages with name, date of birth, photo and address. The current residential proof too is must, whether temporary or permanent. Some fund houses may insist on In-Person Verification too. B. FIRC (Remittance Certificate) If you have made the payment via a cheque or a draft, you must attach a Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) with it. In case, that is not possible, a letter from the bank would also do. This confirms the source of funds. WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM | JULY 2019

C. Redemption The AMC will credit the corpus (investment + gains) you get after fund redemption to your account after deducting taxes. They can also write a cheque for the same. Some banks allow crediting the redemption amount directly to the NRO/NRE account. If you have opted for non-repatriable investment, they can credit the proceeds only to an NRO account.

4. How Are NRI Mutual Fund Investors Taxed? NRI investors often fear that they will have to pay double tax when they invest in India. Well, that is certainly not the case if India has signed the Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty (DTAA) with the respective country. For instance, India has signed this treaty with the United States. Hence, you can claim tax relief in the United States, if you have already paid taxes in India. The gains from equity mutual funds are taxable based on the holding period.

Short term capital gains attract tax at the rate of 15 percent. However, Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG), in excess of Rs 1 Lakh, are taxable at the rate of 10 percent. In the case of debt funds, Short Term Capital Gains are taxable at the rate of 30 percent. Holding the fund for more than three years will result in 20 percent tax on the gains with indexation benefit. LTCG

on non-listed funds will be taxed at 10 percent without indexation.

5. Which Fund Houses Accept NRI Investments? a. SBI Mutual Fund b. Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund

d. UTI Mutual Fund e. HDFC Mutual Fund f. Sundaram Mutual Fund g. DHFL Pramerica Mutual Fund h. PPFAS Mutual Fund I. L&T Mutual Fund

c. ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund

If You See Me, Don’t Say Hi -By Neel Patel

Authored by Neel Patel, If You See Me, Don’t Say Hi examines the collisions of old world and new world, small town and big city, traditional beliefs (like arranged marriage) and modern rituals (like Facebook stalking). Ranging across the country, Patel’s stories - empathetic, provocative, twisting, and wryly funny - introduce a bold new literary voice, one that feels more timely than ever. WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM | JULY 2019

About Book The 11 seemingly casual and quietly feverish stories in Patel’s debut follow the plight of young first or secondgeneration Indian Americans. Some characters are gay and some straight, but most of them have grown up in suburban Midwest towns where they are viewed as vaguely exotic as, in an effort to find love, they struggle to please or break away from their families. Expected to become doctors or lawyers, they often rebel in sneaky or ineffective ways. In the wrenching “Just a Friend,” 22-year-old bartender Jonathan falls for, and completely fails to understand, the much older, anxious immigrant Ashwin, who wears expensive clothes and conceals or lies about most of the details of his life. In the title story, the narrator and his older brother, Deepak, move from a close friendship to a state of war over the decades, as Deepak flunks out of a “marginally rated college,” joining his disappointed parents in running the motel they own, while the narrator goes to medical school. “World

Famous” is told from the point of view of a member of an ill-fated couple: Ankur, a medical student from a wealthy family, is attracted to his former high school classmate Anjali, whose family is upwardly aspiring, but their relationship is doomed because of their class discrepancy.

About Neel Patel Neel Patel is a screenwriter and author who grew up in Champaign, Illinois. His short stories have appeared in Indiana Review, The Southampton Review, Hyphen Magazine, The American Literary Review, and on His first book, If You See Me, Don’t Say Hi, is a New York Times Editors’ choice, an NPR Best Book of 2018, and has been optioned for television. He lives in Los Angeles, where he is developing a television series and writing a novel.

Pramila Jayapal Opens up About Her Own Abortion Story Indian American Representative of the United States Pramila Jayapal has recently opened up about the time when she decided to have an abortion years ago. By this, Jayapal has become the second member of Congress to speak publicly about choosing to get the procedure done, in an op-ed for the New York Times on Thursday.

Jayapal spoke up that she had not publicly discussed  it before “because it is an intensely personal decision,” adding the notes that “But I have decided to speak about it now because I am deeply concerned about the intensified efforts to strip choice and constitutional rights away from pregnant people and the simplistic ways of trying to criminalize abortion.” Her story came out in the wake when laws seeking to ban and criminalize abortions now sweeping across the South and Midwest. This surge has sparked many women like Pramila Jayapal to share their stories. The Democratic congresswoman said she had to make a “heartbreaking decision”. “There are so many stories that are far more traumatic than mine-low-income pregnant people and rape victims who face untenable choices. “There are also stories out there that are not traumatic at all—just the free exercise of a protected right. But it must be their choice.” “For me, terminating my pregnancy was not an easy

choice, but it was my choice,” Jayapal said. “That is the single thing that has allowed me to live with the consequences of my decisions. And that is what must be preserved, for every pregnant person.” She shed light on the current abortion storm, revealing what it was like to have an abortion 22 years ago after doctors warned her that she might face a second high-risk pregnancy. Talking further about how she had to make a difficult decision, Jayapal revealed, “I decided I could not responsibly have the baby. It was a heartbreaking decision, but it was the only one

I was capable of making.” Jayapal also noted saying the abortion stories that exist reflect on traumatic stories of rape survivors. But other abortions, she added, are “just the free exercise of a protected constitutional right.” Jayapal, a mother and stepmother, added, “I am fortunate to live in a state where pregnant people’s right to make choices about their own bodies is protected, where so many less fortunate than me can still afford to have abortions, without encountering barriers like forced counseling and waiting periods.” JULY 2019 | WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) Asia Report “Global Study on Smuggling of Migrants-2018”, “Various countries in South and Central America are used as transit countries for migrant smuggling between South and South-West Asia and North America. Sometimes this is due to visa arrangements.” These migrants avoid the

U.S. airspace and they prefer to use the routes through countries including Ecuador, Guatemala, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, El Salvador Paraguay, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Colombia. “And their final destination is Canada and the U.S. The U.S. is sometimes used as a transit point for moving to Canada,” states the UN report. For instance, between 2009 and 2011, Indians used a visa waiver scheme for Indian nationals in Guatemala to gain easier access to the U.S. via Mexico. After the termination of this scheme by Guatemala, Ecuador, which had a similar program, emerged as a transit point for the smuggling of migrants from India. According to a travel agent,

Some immigrants use boats from Ecuador to bypass Colombia, and the Panama Jungles and move directly to Costa Rica, Nicaragua or El Salvador” which is life risk.” The United Kingdom, Spain, and the Syrian Arab Republic are also used as transit points to smuggle migrants from South-West Asian countries to North American, the UN report stated quoting British authorities.

“Often the route taken in Brazil is by travel visa or by cargo vessels and the onward journey is by bus, taxis and walking to reach Ecuador by crossing the borders. On reaching Brazil, they have many options: either they can travel by crossing borders of Paraguay - Bolivia-Brazil Colombia - Ecuador or through Amazonia Jungle (Brazil) Colombia - Ecuador.”

According to the UN report, migrant smugglers often facilitate irregular movements by air from India. Some East and SouthEast Asian migrants pay smugglers to arrange a fake marriage with a Canadian or American citizen in order to enter those countries. Others may be smuggled by air directly to the U.S. or via a neighboring country. The young men and women land in the most obscure cities in the South American nations without knowing the language and from there onwards their adventure starts. In 2018, Colombia Migration has detected 1,200 irregular migrants who were from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Cameroon. On average, each migrant pays a thousand dollars for their passage through Colombia.

Stringent Action Against Traffickers Several diplomats from South and Central America region confirmed that trafficking has turned to be a threat and they are working with the Indian government as well as the Indian missions to ensure stringent action is taken against the traffickers. Despite strict monitoring by Indian missions in South America, especially in

Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Mexico, there has been no significant change in the illegal movement of human traffic. In the last couple of years, Punjab government has registered cases against several travel agencies in Punjab after a boatload of 24 youth had capsized in Panama and there were no survivors. “Unless effective action is taken against Indian agents, illegal activities will continue unabated from North and South India, said an Indian diplomat. All things are arranged by human trafficking Agents. The Indian agent has the responsibility to ensure that that Indian can get migration in Latin American region. Once the person reaches the South or Central America the local agent takes over. This local agent’s responsibility is to provide the immigrant with fake documents, paperwork, food, stay, onward journey and entry into the final country of destination.

The Secrets of Navigating Through Life

-From Gaur Gopal Das Gaur Gopal Das is one of the most popular and sought-after monks and life coaches in the world, having shared his wisdom with millions. Read along to know some important lessons from his debut book Life’s Amazing Secrets.

More to reality than meets the eye “We tend to take everyone at face value, equating what they have on the outside to how they feel on the inside. The paradox of our times is that those who have the most, can often be the least satisfied. We have mastered how to look successful, but not how to organize our lives so that we feel successful.”

Patience develops gradually

“We all boil at different degrees. Some of us have temperaments like the Indian summer- hot, sticky and easily irritable. Yet, some can remain level-headed in the worst of calamities, and as a monk, I was taught to control my emotions. So, naturally, I assumed that I was the latter level-headed category. That was until the day I realized I wasn’t there yet.”

Check your thoughts “The mind is like the tongue. It drifts towards the negative areas of our life, making us restless and uneasy. It schemes to uproot the problems that are causing us so much pain, not realizing that the persistent scheming is causing us more emotional damage.”

Embrace gratitude as a way of life WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM | JULY 2019

“Gratitude is not a feeling; it is a state of mind that can be developed, and it allows us to tap into a reservoir of unlimited positive energy. Being grateful happens in two steps. The first is to realize that there is good in the world and that good has fallen upon us. The second is to know that goodness is coming from something other than us, an external reality is giving the gifts of grace to our very own reality.”

Detachment dissolves anxiety “When we have a problem beyond our control, we have to turn to our spiritual strength and ask, ‘Why Worry?’ Whether or not we can do something about it, our response should not be anxiety. Learning to detach ourselves from situations that are outside our control is an imperative skill to learn for personal growth.”

Meditate to ease away stress “Out of the many types of meditation, I practise mantra meditation. This means I spend some time daily focusing my mind on sacred sounds, chanting the name of God, by which we can free ourselves of anxiety.”

Practice forgiveness over animosity

know that nobody is their competition. They are their own competition.”

Spirituality and ambition are not mutually exclusive “I strongly encourage people to be successful in the world. If you have the desire to have a luxurious life, have exotic holidays; there is nothing wrong with that. If by blessings of God we have the ambition and the capacity to achieve more, we must fulfill our potential, not suppress it by force.”

Be selfless yet draw boundaries

“Forgiveness warms the heart and cools the sting. It is a choice that each of us has to make for ourselves to save our relationships and achieve peace of mind.“

Competition is a dangerous game “People with a closed mindset want to grow by beating others in their field. Open-minded people, on the other hand, grow by developing themselves. They

“I do believe it is possible to be completely selfless, but it is a journey, a process, not a single event. It takes wisdom to know when we are being selfless and when we are simply causing harm to ourselves by being over caring.“

Service to humanity brings ultimate joy “When we practise spirituality, we become like divers: we submerge ourselves underneath the turbulent waves to find a pleasure much deeper, beyond hedonistic ideals. That profound joy is only possible when one feels love to serve others.”

$490 Billion in Black Money

Stashed Abroad by Indians: Report Studies conducted by three premier institutes - NIPFP, NCAER, and NIFM - have concluded that unaccounted wealth held by Indians outside the country till 2010 could be as high as $490 billion, besides black money parked within the country as ‘investments’ in sectors like real estate, mining, tobacco/gutka, bullion, films and education.

This was part of a report of the standing committee on finance tabled in Lok Sabha. This is the first official acknowledgment of the three government-sponsored studies initiated in 2011 to estimate black money held by Indians in the country and abroad. On a reference from the then UPA government, the three think tanks came out with their own estimates of black money. The reports have not been made public yet, though they were submitted to the government during the UPA regime. The National Institute of Public Policy and Finance (NIPFP) has estimated illicit financial flow out of the country during 1997-2009 in the range of 0.2 percent to 7.4

percent of GDP. The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), however, estimated unaccounted wealth accumulated outside the country by Indians between $384 billion and $490 billion during 1980-2010. The National Institute of Financial Management (NIFM) found the total illicit outflow from India (1990-2008) at Rs 9,41,837 crore ($216.48 billion). Illicit outflows from India was on average 10 percent of the unaccounted income, it said. “There are no reliable estimates of black money generation or accumulation, neither is there an accurate well-accepted methodology for making such estimation,” the standing committee on finance said in its report.

It said these estimates were made merely on “assumptions” as there was no uniformity or consensus on the best methodology or approach to be used for this purpose. The standing committee report, tabled on Monday, was first submitted by the panel headed by M Veerappa Moily to the Lok Sabha Speaker on March 28 before the lower House was dissolved ahead of parliamentary elections.

The panel noted that the findings were preliminary in nature owing to the paucity of time. Only a limited number of stakeholders could be examined by the committee, it said and recommended examination of more witnesses, including nonofficial witnesses and experts.

19 Ways To Be Kind To

Yourself Today

Hey, look, I get it. Every now and then, I need it to. The world can be a tough and unforgiving place. It can bring the strongest person to their knees and make them wish they never got up again. It’s fast-paced and doesn’t stop 70

when someone falls behind. Instead, it simply leaves them there. It’s tough to stay motivated and tougher to become motivated.

You and I both know that life can become overwhelming at the frantic pace it operates at. You may even feel like you don’t even know what it means to take be kind to yourself anymore. Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. Just last week I found myself in that exact spot. Instead of beating myself down, I created a list of things that I’ve done in the past to pick myself up. If you’re up for it, I want to share that list with you.

Here are 19 ways to be kind to yourself today.

1. Schedule- in specific time for me

time. Open the calendar on your phone and push aside all activates on a day of your

choice. Take whatever day you have chosen and do the things that you want to do and not have to do. There is a difference. Life is too short to fill the calendar with meetings, sales calls, and events. Try filling it with things you enjoy too.

2. Call in sick If you’ve done the above and searched your calendar but can’t find a day, call in sick. Be sure not to tell anyone but you’re employer that you’re doing it though. Choosing to tell other defeats the purpose because they will want your attention. Please take this day for yourself and do exactly what it is that you want to do.

LIFE STYLE 3.Treat yourself: Keep it within your means but treat yourself to something that brings you tremendous joy. You work hard for your money and as much as all the experts advise against it, go and spend some of it. Buy whatever makes you feel good. If it’s a comic book, go and buy one. If it’s a pedicure, take those shoes off and sit down. It doesn’t matter what it is, just go and buy it.

4. Believe in yourself

When things are as challenging as they are, sometimes the best course of action is to simply believe in yourself. Remember what you have done to get where you are and know that the same belief will get you to where you want to go. Once you start to believe again, step outside and scream it as loud as you can so the world can hear your conviction.

5. Positive affirmations Give yourself that much needed pep talk. You know the one. The

one that starts with “I am great and I can do whatever I want” and ends with “And I know in my heart all of this to be true.” Not only will it change your trajectory but it will also drastically improve a bad mood.

6. Surround yourself Seek out those who look to empower you and will speak positively about you. Jim Rohn is often quoted as saying “You’re The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With.” When life is overwhelming, surround yourself with those who you look up to and let them pick you up. And pick you up they will. All I ask is that you be there on the day that someone needs you to pick them up.

7. Go for a walk If it seems simple, it’s because it is. Go for a walk. Get out into nature and see the world. While you’re out there, smell the smells, listen to the sounds, and feel the wind as it passes by. Some of the most

enjoyable things in life are often free and readily available. This is one of them. Oh, and if you’re really looking to treat yourself, do this in the rain. You’ll be stunned by how much it will change you.

8. Spend sometime

listening to music Music is the universal language and the looking glass into our souls. Technology allows you to play the exact song you’re looking for at the exact moment you’re looking for it. Use this to your advantage. Remember, only you know what that song is so go ahead and load it up. From there, prepare to be taken away to a place that only you know.

9. Read something: If music isn’t your thing, no problem. Unplug from the world and curl up with your favorite book. You know the one. The one that you’ve read more than 5 times and each time that you pick it up, it’s impossible to put down. That one. Pick it up again and get ready to immerse yourself in a place unlike your own.

10. Donate to a

good chemical concoction quite like doing something for someone else. Donating will instantly supply you with a dose of serotonin that will not only change your mood, but also give you that warm fuzzy feeling for days.

11. Take a nap; Is there any wonder that the highest performers take naps during the day? And I’m not talking CEO’s. I’m talking about children and babies. These little people are learning so much on a dayto-day level that their body commands that they take a nap. If you don’t quite believe how much the nap helps, just look at how different they view the world right before and right after a nap. A word of caution comes with the nap, however. Be sure that when you awake, you don’t feel guilty. It’s well deserved.

12. Look in the mirror and compliment who

Nothing releases a feel-

you see:

that a compliment goes a long way. Instead of continuously sending them out into the world, send one into the mirror and watch the reflection light up with glee.

13. Help out a stranger; Imagine how different the world would be if we all treated those that we don’t know as well as those we do know. Go out and be the example that the world needs. Be kind to a stranger. Remarkably, you’ll be surprised to find that the person that you were kind to will often pay it forward to another.

14. Read a journal entry from 2 years ago;

When was the last time you read your journal? Is it just as often as you look at the pictures on your phone? Like the pictures that allow access

to old memories, the journal is a great tool of reflection. So go ahead and take a look through an old journal. Not only will it be fun to read about yourself from the past but it will also serve as a point of reference for how far you’ve come. Don’t have a journal? Start one today.

15. Have a cheat day where nothing you do matters;

In the fitness world eating poorly once a week is known as a cheat day.

There is nothing wrong with incorporating this day into your weekly schedule. Stop doing the things that matter (work, cooking, cleaning, etc) and focus on the things that don’t matter (seeing the latest movie, reading a magazine, spending a day in your pajama’s, etc).

16. Go skydiving; Obviously not for the feint of heart but for those thrill seekers, skydiving may be just the treat yourself remedy you need. The anxiety of the take off coupled with the bliss of soaring through the skies cannot be replicated anywhere. However long it takes you to float back down to the Earth is subsequently the perfect amount of time to think about life.

17. Book that vacation you’ve been putting off:

Nothing says “treat yourself” quite like finally booking that much needed vacation. It really doesn’t matter where you’re going just as long as you decide to go somewhere and actually book it. Knowing that a vacation is just around the corner will keep you thinking about all the other ways that you can treat yourself once you get there.

18. Phone someone and tell them how much they mean to you. Treating yourself doesn’t always mean doing something that directly benefits you. It can mean calling up a friend and telling them exactly what they mean to you. Imagine how it would make you feel if, out of the blue, someone who you

hadn’t talked to recently called you up to tell you how great you are. Now imagine what it would do for them. Go do it.

19. Count 10 ways that your life is amazing;

That’s it. Simple. Just 10 ways. No more. No less. I can’t promise that all of these will work for you. What I can promise, however, is that some of them will. So, take some time to do each of them and figure out which ones will work for you. After you have that information, every time you find a new way to be kind to yourself, add it to your list. Eventually you’ll have a list a mile long. I hope this article has shown you a number of option that you opt to know about the ways to be kind to you by today itself.

How to do: Begin with your hands and knees on the floor. Make sure your knees are under your hips, and your wrists are under your shoulders. Begin in a neutral spine position, with your back flat and your abs engaged. Take a big deep inhale. On the exhale, round your spine up towards the ceiling, and imagine you’re pulling your belly button up towards your spine, really engaging your abs. Tuck your chin towards your chest, and let your neck release. This is your cat-like shape. On your inhale, arch your back, let your belly relax and go loose. Lift your head and tailbone up towards the sky — without putting any unnecessary pressure on your neck. This is the Cow portion of the pose. 2. Warrior: Safe for all trimesters of pregnancy, this is a good pose to strengthen your legs and core while lengthening your spine and opening up your sides. If you start to experience any uncomfortable pulling in your pubic area or the front of your hips (most likely in your third trimester), first try decreasing your range of motion. If you still experience any discomfort, discontinue Warrior 2 for the remainder of your pregnancy.

How To Do: Stand in tadasana (Mountain Pose). With an exhalation, step or lightly jump your feet 3 1/2 to 4 feet apart. Raise your arms parallel to the floor and reach them actively out to the sides, shoulder blades wide, palms down. Turn your right foot slightly to the right and your left foot out to the left 90 degrees. Align the left heel with the right heel. Firm your thighs and turn your left thigh outward so that the center of the left knee cap is in line with the center of the left ankle. Exhale and bend your left knee over the left ankle, so that the shin is perpendicular to the floor. If possible, bring the left thigh parallel to the floor. Anchor this movement of the left knee by strengthening the right leg and pressing the outer right heel firmly to the floor. Stretch the arms away from the space between the shoulder blades, parallel to the floor. Don’t lean the torso over the left thigh: Keep the sides of the torso equally long and the shoulders directly over the pelvis. Press the tailbone slightly toward the pubis. Turn the head to the left and look out over the fingers. Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Inhale to come up. Reverse the feet and repeat for the same length of time to the left.

3. Bridge Pose:

Many women love this pose for opening up their hips and strengthening their core, glutes and hamstrings. It’s safe for all trimesters, unless you don’t feel comfortable on your back. Tip: Be sure to start on your side, then roll to your back, moving your body into bridge pose, this helps minimize stress on your rectus abdominis just the front part of your abs. 80

How To Do: Lie supine on the floor, Bend your knees and set your feet on the floor, heels as close to the sitting bones as possible. Exhale and, pressing your inner feet and arms actively into the floor, push your tailbone upward toward the pubis, firming the buttocks, and lift the buttocks off the floor. Keep your thighs and inner feet parallel. Clasp the hands below your pelvis and extend through the arms to help you stay on the tops of your shoulders. Lift your buttocks until the thighs are about parallel to the floor. Keep your knees directly over the heels, but push them forward, away from the hips, and lengthen the tailbone toward the backs of the knees. Lift the pubis toward the navel. Lift your chin slightly away from the sternum and, firming the shoulder blades against your back, press the top of the sternum toward the chin. Firm the outer arms, broaden the shoulder blades, and try to lift the space between them at the base of the neck (where it’s resting on the blanket) up into the torso. Stay in the pose anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute. Release with an exhalation, rolling the spine slowly down onto the floor.

4. King pigeon Pose: This is a wonderful option for opening up the front of your hips and glutes. When holding pigeon pose, think about keeping a light core connection and lengthening through the top of your head. This allows for deeper opening of your hips by giving your deep core more support, rather then just sinking into the stretch. While this pose is safe for all trimesters of pregnancy, as your belly grows you may need to modify it by propping a pillow under your hips.

How To Do: Keep the knees directly below your hips, and your hands slightly ahead of your shoulders. Slide your right knee forward to the back of your right wrist,at the same time angle your right shin under your torso and bring your right foot to the front of your left knee. The outside of your right shin will now rest on the floor. Slowly slide your left leg back, straightening the knee and descending the front of the thigh to the floor. Lower the outside of your right buttock to the floor. Position the right heel just in front of the left hip. The right knee can angle slightly to the right, outside the line of the hip. The left leg should extend straight out of the hip and rotated slightly inwardly, so its mid line presses against the floor. Exhale and lay your torso down on the inner right thigh for a few breaths. Stretch your arms forward. Then slide your hands back toward the front shin and push your fingertips firmly to the floor. Lift your torso away from the thigh. Lengthen the lower back by pressing your tailbone down and forward. At the same time, lift your pubis toward the navel. Roll your left hip point toward the right heel, and lengthen the left front groin. Push heavily down. Against this pressure, lift the lower rim of your rib cage. The back ribs should lift a little faster than the front. Without shortening the back of your neck, drop your head back. To lift your chest, push the top of your sternum straight up toward the ceiling. Stay in this position for a minute. Then, with your hands back on the floor, carefully slide the left knee forward.

A Cupof Coffee May Help Fight Obesity and

Diabetes, Suggests Study 84

Drinking a cup of coffee might have downsides but it also holds untold benefits. A new study found that a cup of coffee helps in fighting obesity and diabetes as it stimulates the body’s fat-fighting defenses. Published in Scientific Reports Journal, the researchers who led the study found components in coffee that could have a direct impact on brown fat functions. Brown fat is an important organ of the human body, present in quite small amounts, which plays a key role in how speedily we can burn calories as energy. Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT), also known as brown fat, is one of two types of fat found in humans and other mammals. Its main function is to generate body heat by burning calories (as opposed to white fat, which is an outcome of storing

excess calories).People with a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) thus have a higher amount of brown fat. “Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold. Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss,” said study’s co-director Michael Symonds, Professor at the University

HEALTHY LIVING of Nottingham. “This is the first study in humans to show that something like a cup of coffee can have a direct effect on our brown fat functions. The potential implications of our results are pretty big, as obesity is a major health concern for society and we also have a growing diabetes epidemic and brown fat could potentially be part of the solution in tackling them,” he noted.

For the study, the researchers started with a series of stem cell studies to see if caffeine would stimulate brown fat. After finding the right dose, they then moved on to humans to see if the results were similar. The researchers used a thermal imaging technique to trace the body’s brown fat reserves. The noninvasive technique helps the team to ascertain brown fat and assess its capacity to produce heat. “From our previous work, we knew that brown fat is mainly located in the neck region, so we were able to image someone straight after they had a drink to see if the brown fat got hotter,” he said. “The results were positive and we now need to ascertain WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM | JULY 2019

that caffeine as one of the ingredients in the coffee is acting as the stimulus or if there’s another component helping with the activation of brown fat. We are currently looking at caffeine supplements to test whether the effect is similar,” Symonds added. “Once we have confirmed which component is responsible for this, it could potentially be used as part of a weight management regime or as part of glucose regulation program to help prevent diabetes,” he concluded.

Islamophobia in 37of hate speech Disinformation on Facebook’

The study points to failure of the content moderation process by Facebook, adding that 93 per cent of all hate speech posts reported are still available on the platform. An analysis of hate speech and disinformation on the social networking site Facebook India by a South Asian American human rights and technology research organisation shows that the highest proportion of hate speech — 37 per cent — is linked to Islamophobia. JULY 2019 | WWW.NRINEWSTODAY.COM

TECHNOLOGY This is followed by false news (16 per cent), and content that can be classified as casteist and gender/ sexuality-related hate speech, each accounting for 13 per cent of the hate speech content.

The report by the US-based Equality Labs titled ‘Facebook India: Towards The Tipping Point of Violence Caste and Religious Hate Speech’ states that homophobic content is so widely prevalent on Facebook that it had to be tracked as its own category, separate from all other religious minorities. “Homophobic content is foundational to the hate speech echo chamber in Facebook India It is often the most violent, most threatening, and most gruesome,” the report reads. Anti-religious minorities content, other than Islamophobia, accounted for another 9 per cent of the hate speech. The report, which dis-aggregates hate speech content into categories in the Indian context as also analyses Facebook’s response, is set to be released on Wednesday at the RightsCon Summit on human rights in the digital age in Tunis. It looks at more than 1,000 posts in six Indian languages over a period of four months. The sample set is based on Facebook’s own guidelines for tier 1 hate speech which include violent or dehumanising speech that targets a person or people based on Facebook’s defined protected categories (“race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, caste, sex, gender, gender tech identity, and serious disease or disability”). This includes content advocating violence,

bullying and use of offensive slurs. The study points to failure of the content moderation process by Facebook, adding that 93 per cent of all hate speech posts reported are still available on the platform. It also faults Facebook’s hiring policies that do not include those with an understanding of issues of caste, religious, gender and queer minorities. A Facebook spokesperson told the Indian Express: “We recognize, respect, and seek to protect the rights of minorities and communities that are often marginalized, both in India and around the world. We have clear rules against hate speech, which we define as attacks against people on the basis of their protected characteristics, including caste, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity. We take this extremely seriously and remove this content as soon as we become aware of it. To do this, we have invested in staff

anti-Ambedkar messages and anti inter-caste personal relationships content. Similarly, a quarter of the posts containing gender/sexuality hate speech were found to be transphobic or queerphobic in content including calls for sexual violence. Outlining why Facebook needs to strengthen its content moderation policy, the report states, “In a country of 1.3 billion people with over 294 million active accounts, Facebook India’s user base will soon exceed the entire population of the United States. And, unlike the US, Facebook India has an unprecedented growth potential of over 400% because a whole new generation of users has yet to come online. The future of Facebook then is the Indian market.”

in India, including content reviewers, with local language capabilities and an understanding of the country’s longstanding historical and social tensions. We’ve also made significant progress in proactively detecting hate speech on our services before anyone reports it to us, to help us get to potentially harmful content faster.” A further breakdown of posts within each category shows that of the Islamophobic posts, 6 per cent is anti-Rohingya “with calls to violence similar to content that led to the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar”. The rest were mostly pertaining to ‘love jihad’, glorification of violence by alluding to earlier instances of religious violence against Muslims, and Islamophobic profanities. Less than half of the casteist hate speech on Facebook India, it states, is relating to India’s reservation policy with the rest being caste slurs,

Thenmozhi Soundararajan, executive director at Equality Labs, said, “Given the advocacy of many civil society groups in India about the scope and scale of hate speech and disinformation on the platform, Facebook has to work with civil society to conduct an independent human rights audit. This is a call for a thorough examination of their operations that Facebook should itself fund as they did in the US market.” Following allegations of bias from conservatives and minority groups in the US and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Congressional hearings, Facebook asked an American civil rights leader in 2018 to audit the company regarding voter suppression, content moderation, advertising targeting, diversity and more.

Story : A little boy who is forced to be responsible early on, grows up with no regret of a non- existent childhood. He in fact makes it his life goal to put his family before him. The film follows the journey of Bharat (Salman Khan) over the course of several decades as he navigates the ups and downs of life.

Analysis :

Bharat focuses on the personal and professional choices of its righteous hero, set against the social backdrop of its time. Separated from his father and sister during the Indo - Pak partition in 1947 as a child, Bharat decides to dedicate his entire life to keeping the promise he’d made to his missing father. He takes it upon himself as the eldest son of the house to look after his mother and siblings, hoping their family would reunite some day. From 1947 to 2010, the narrative traverses a period of over six decades. He even falls in love with the feisty Kumud (Katrina Kaif), who is brave and honest women the Sunil Grover’s character as Vilayati, Bharat’s best friend and confidante. Interestingly, there’s a hidden Sooraj Barjatya in Salman Khan, somewhere. In times of the ‘hookup culture’ being glorified in movies and web shows, his films with old school values often aim to get the families together and that stands out. He acts well and looks good. The infuses emotions with ample fun Salman elements that will get his diehard fans to whistle. He mounts the meandering story in an unhurried manner on a huge canvas. While he manages to keep you hooked despite his complex source material and misplaced songs, Bharat has too many things happening at once and too many time leaps.

Final Word: This eventually makes the movie an exhausting, scattered watch despite the entertainment, humour and nobility it propagates.

TOLLYWOOD Story : NGK is the story of Nanda Gopala Krishna (NGK) who is a highly educated post-graduate. He works for an IT firm in the city and is a happy going guy. One fine day, he quits his job and decides to test his luck in organic farming. After some incidents that take place, NGK decides to join politics. Though his decision gets opposed, NGK works hard to live up the dreams and serve people. The story of NGK is all about the hurdles and how he chases them to win his dream. Watch NGK to know about the complete story.

Analysis : Suriya is a gifted actor and can step into any role and do it with perfection. NGK is the best example for this. The first half of the film looks decent with good narration and 134 entertainment along with a family drama and enough dose of emotional connect. Some of the episodes have been well penned and presented. The interval episodes elevate the film well and keep up good expectations on the second half. The second half of NGK is a huge disappointment as it offers nothing interesting and exciting. The slow paced drama will leave the audience in splits. Selvaraghavan fails big time in mixing an emotional family drama with a political touch.

Final Word: The pre-climax episodes even turn worst and they test the patience of the audience. On the whole, the second half of NGK is a huge misfire.

Story :

Kalki is the story of Kalki (Rajasekhar) who is a fearless cop and leads the list in investigating cases. He is ruthless and he gets an assignment to investigate the murder mystery of Sekhar Babu who is brutally killed in Kolhapur. The village happens to be the platform where two groups fight against each other. The rest of Kalki is all about the murder investigation, real facts about Sekhar Babu's murder and the real culprits behind the crime. Watch Kalki to know about the real story.

Analysis : Kalki has a lean plot and has no exciting stuff. The film is filled with a bunch of actors whose roles are poorly penned and badly presented. The first half of Kalki makes no impact and is badly executed. The songs are placed bad and the film turns clumsy as it nears the interval. The interval episode has been well shot. On the whole, the first half of Kalki sounds below average and has no interesting stuff. The second half of Kalki turns even poor because of the confused script and narration. The twists that are unfolded lack interest and the songs are poorly presented once again. The pre-climax episodes make the film even worse and the climax episodes have been decent. On the whole, Kalki is a fatal attempt that lacks enough clarity.

Final Word: Kalki is one more poor attempt that can be given a skip. Rajasekhar looks dashing and daring in the role of Kalki. Except this, the film offers nothing.
