The tradition The marriage proposal The marriage proposal is an official meeting of two families whereat the groom’s family comes to the bride’s family with offerings including betel leaves and areca. The families then decide a propitious day and time for both the engagement and wedding ceremonies based on the lunar calendar; and the number and type of engagement gifts based on the request of the bride’s family. Ours is on the twentieth eight of October, two thousand and sixteen! The engagement This ceremony officially announces the wedding and the relationship between two families. On the day, the groom’s family and friends come to the bride’s home with engagement gifts, and the two families then ask and give permission for the marriage. Upon getting approval, the groom goes to get the bride and they then present themselves. Prayers for the marriage are then offered to the ancestors of the bride’s family. Ours is on the first of November, two thousand and sixteen! The wedding ceremony The most important event is the wedding ceremony itself where the two families announce an official bond and give blessings to the newly married couple. On the day, the groom’s family comes to the bride’s family bringing flowers, betel leaves and areca, and a family representative formally asks to take the bride to the groom’s house. When the bride’s family gives their consent, the groom may see the bride. In the company of their parents and witnessing family, they offer prayers to the ancestors before officially exchanging rings and presenting themselves as Man and Wife. The bride then leaves for the groom’s house where the ancestral ceremony is also conducted before they enjoy the celebration together with their families. Ours is on the eight of November, two thousand and sixteen! The celebration with the extended families and friends is held on the same day after the traditional wedding ceremony!
