Under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, HPL is granted an allocation of CO2 emission that the site is deemed to need to operate. As part of the CIA Climate Change Agreement, HPL has elected to opt out of the EU scheme. This means that our energy target is calculated using CIA rather than EU formulae. The agreement ends on 31/12/07.

Figure 15 describes the specific primary energy for the site including purchased gas and electricity. This is based on HPL’s meter readings. During 2004 and 2005 we obtained slightly lower efficiency compared to 2003. This was due to a combination of raw material supply shortfall and the reduced availability of our CHP unit. HPL is committed to reducing primary specific energy usage to 4.11 GJ/tonne by the end of 2006.

Figure 16 describes the amount of gas and electricity purchased with no correction factor. This is also based on HPL’s meter readings. The slight rise in the specific delivered energy in 2005 was due to marginally slower operating conditions associated with feedstock supply.
