Tricks of the Trade for Nonprofit Communications Generating dollars for an organization is dependent upon the ability to tell a good story--and to have others tell it for you. Pitching the media can be a delicate balancing act, and understanding the best approaches to gain media exposure can save your organization time and money. Please join us on July 11 as we hear from three veteran media experts and learn tricks of the trade for nonprofit communications. Steve Conley, a longtime Memphis radio personality, Candace McCowan, a reporter for WREG News Channel 3 and Emily Keplinger with the Commercial Appeal will discuss your communications questions and concerns and provide valuable insight on how to get your nonprofit noticed. *Crytal Awards winners will also be announced*
Thursday, July 11th CBU, Thomas Center, 11:30am - 1:00pm To register for the July 11th luncheon, please visit www.afpmemphis.org. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
A Message from President Leigh Hersey
Kimberly Crafton Memphis Goodwill Industries, Inc.
I am so excited about this month’s panel on the media. I grew up in the newspaper business and, as my birth announcement says, my blood type is printer’s ink. Growing up in a small town, everyone knew our family – and our home phone number. I remember my Dad getting calls at night and on weekends from people who didn’t want to “bother you at work.” But, they wanted a photo taken for the paper – right now – about something that had been planned for weeks. My Dad is a gracious man, and he interrupted his plans to take almost every single one of those pictures. He would have loved having a session like this to help people understand how the media really works and the best way to work with them to get your organization noticed.

You may wonder how having connections with the media can help you and your organization. In 2009, AFP International released the report “Tips on Cost Effective Media Relations” identifying four key reasons why this relationship is important: 1) It is a cost-effective way to establish and enhance your brand 2) It helps your cause and demonstrates impact 3) It positions your organization as a leader 4) It can be a good stewardship tool for fundraising.

So, take advantage of this month’s luncheon and improve your relationships with the media. Leigh N. Hersey President

It Makes Sense to Give to AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Fundraisers do more than just raise money—we make positive change happen! Without fundraising, donors and charities wouldn’t be able to transform communities and improve the quality of life for everyone. Fundraising increases the capacity of nonprofit organizations to create impact, and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy is proud to play an important role in that process. Through education, training, ethical practices, research, networking, collaboration and community building, we help fundraisers raise more money to increase their organizations’ capacity. Since our formation in 1960, AFP has helped fundraisers generate more than $1 trillion in gifts and donations, and AFP members raise more than $100 billion every year for charitable causes around the world.
