years. More than half of the men walked an hour or less each day. About one in six reported walking more than two hours per day. During the follow-up period, 195 of the men had a stroke. The researchers found that the more time men spent walking, the lower their risk of stroke. Men who walked four to seven hours each week were 11 percent less likely to have a stroke than men who walked for three hours per week or less. But that difference could have been due to chance, Jefferis and her colleagues reported in the journal Stroke. A stronger finding was that men who walked the most - for more than three hours

each day — had a twothirds lower risk of stroke than those who spent the least time walking.Walking pace was also tied to stroke risk, such that average-pace or brisk walkers had a 38 percent lower risk of stroke than slow walkers. But distance walked explained that finding: men who walked at an average or brisk pace also walked further than their slower peers, according to the study. The findings don’t prove walking prevents strokes. But they could not be explained by factors known to increase a person’s risk of stroke, like age, blood pressure and cholesterol. Reuters

More walking tied to lower stroke risk among men

New York, 24 Nov — Older men who spend several hours walking each day are less likely to have a stroke than their peers who rarely walk, a new study suggests. And walking pace didn’t seem to matter. Researchers said few studies have looked specifically at how both walking speed and walking time or distance are linked to stroke risk. “Stroke is a major cause of death and disability and it is important to find ways to prevent it, especially in older people who are at high stroke risk,” Barbara J. Jefferis told Reuters Health in an email. She led the research at University College London in the UK.

“Our study suggests that maintaining an active lifestyle, specifically by spending more time on all forms of walking, could be an important part of stroke prevention strategies in older people,” Jefferis said. She and her coauthors analyzed data from men enrolled in a long-term British heart study. The men entered the study in 1978 to 1980. In 1998 to 2000, when they were in their 60s and 70s, they filled out surveys about how often they were physically active. The new analysis includes 2,995 men who had not had a stroke or heart disease at the time of that survey. Researchers followed them for another 11

US FDA approves J&J hepatitis C pill New York, 24 Nov — US regulators on Friday approved the use of Johnson & Johnson’s Olysio, also known as simeprevir, as a treatment for chronic infection with the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus. Olysio, a protease inhibitor that blocks a specific protein needed by the virus to replicate, is to be used in combination with interferon, given by injection, and ribavirin, another pill. Hepatitis C affects about 3.2 million Americans, killing more than 15,000 each year, mostly from illnesses such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. The often-undiagnosed virus is transmitted through contaminated blood. Infection rates

have dropped since the early 1990s, due in part to the introduction of blood and organ screening. Still, many older adults remain at risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has called for baby boomers to be routinely tested for the virus. Olysio is a member of the same class of drugs as Merck & Co’s Victrelis and Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ Incivek. The FDA approved both those drugs in 2011. Olysio was shown in clinical trials to cure patients with a shorter duration of treatment. Drugmakers have been racing to develop more effective, easier-totolerate antivirals to treat

hepatitis C Wall Street analysts have forecast annual sales of billions of dollars for new drugs that would allow doctors to skip use of interferon, which can cause severe flu-like side effects. The FDA is slated to decide by December 8 on Gilead Sciences’ application for sofosbuvir, a member of a different class known as nucleotide analogue inhibitors, or “nukes,” designed to block a different enzyme the virus needs to copy itself. European regulators on Friday recommended approval of the Gilead drug, under the brand name Sovaldi. Canada to export more agri-foods to China Vancouver, 24 Nov —As China became one of the fastest-growing markets for Canadian agri-foods, Ottawa plans to increase such exports to the Asian country. Under a new programme unveiled Friday, the Canadian government will invest up to 4.3 million Canadian dollars (4.08 million US dollars) annually over the next five years to fund increasing agrifood exports to China and other Asian markets. China, a “critical market” for Canada, saw its agri-food imports from the western Canadian province of British Columbia grow at 20 percent annually, said

Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Canada’s minister of national revenue. She said with a latest trial agreement between the two nations, fresh cherries from British Columbia have obtained new market access to China. Canada also hopes to secure an agreement with China on similar market access for fresh blueberries exports next year, Findlay said. It is vital to open up new markets such as China, said Debbie Etsell, executive director of the British Columbia Blueberry Council. “We know the demand’s there,” Etsell told Xinhua. Xinhua
