ARMED WITH A CAMERA, PEN, PAPER WE SAID, “LOOK FOR WHAT IS POSITIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY.” THEY SAID, “WHERE?” WE SAID, “BEGIN WITH YOURSELVES.” BEHOLD, OUR MILWAUKEE: ONE CITY, MANY SOULS. YES, MANY BEAUTIFUL SOULS 3

Considered the neighborhood medicine man since 1968, 79 year old Lester L. Carter Jr. ‘Doc Carter’ not only dispenses medicine and herbal treatments, but also gives kind and gentle care to all his patients. A permanent fixture on 24th & Burleigh, he is much endeared to all.

The Legend of Dr. Carter by Shawn Matlock Made a heart spot on Burleigh Where there’s no meaning for the word die Where all the good birds fly And the guys on the corner heart is Smarter than a college degree with a tie And no one can explain why Why the guy on the corner’s heart is Sweeter than the brown sugar in an apple pie You can’t step into his store when Being shy And his selection of items may vary Although all are worth a buy You can’t leave his store without A great selection And you leave with a conversation That’s so great That it seems like he’s perfection The store with love that leaving Makes it harder And you won’t leave unsatisfied When meeting the legend Of Doc Carter

Faith by Neosha Hampton Dedicated to residents of Safe Harbor Men’s Shelter Uplifting, Like a bird spreading its wings Taking flight as the wind pushes it upwards Invisible force taking its toll Moving with haste Gentle Reassuring, Like the air I breathe Veiled, Like the mask of hope Hidden, Like the emotions we feel But never seem to see Faith, It’s the force that moves us

Converting an industrial Bayview warehouse building in 2008 into an urban, sustainable farm, Sweet Water Organics aims to produce fresh, safe produce and fish for local Milwaukee residents, restaurants and stores. Focusing on turning wastes into community resources – using unique methods in soil, water, and energy – they are a model of the community that we all admire and love.

Award winning John Tanner & Bob Monagle know music and the business of music, providing artists with a state-ofthe-art space for composing, sound design and audio/video productions. Their philosophy of giving back to the community in many ways has greatly benefited Milwaukee. TANNER-MONGALE INC 1120 N. MARKET ST. 32

Tanner-Monagle by Neosha Hampton The beating of my heart echoes through the beating I can feel the vibrations biting at my fingertips Making its way into my arms Running its course through my body I can hear it Let the music blast and the speakers play The lyrics encrypt themselves in my brain Like a catchy jungle that wont go away I relate this back to my past I feel a smile coming on I open my moth repeat the word Over and over as it replays in my head I sing it before I go to bed This song This tune Was all created in Tanner-Monagle Studios

In 1965, Bezelee & Lena Martin wanted to offer inner-city residents a neighborhood grocery store that would offer healthy and fresh foods from the Southern states – to provide many of the staples of the African American diet. Following Lena’s original mission, the six Lena’s Food Markets in Milwaukee are now owned and run by the sons and brother of the founders, and continue to be known and endeared to all who shop there. Fresh Fruits and Work Boots by Shawn Mattock Fresh Fruits and Work Boots The home of the hearted Open like automatic doors where the fresh smell started And you walk pass a person who relationship has parted As they leave the automatic doors You start to walk on the white paved floors Where the store’s workers walk around with open pours Because of the hard work that they put in They leave the stress behind for work and tries to put their foot in Helping all the workers and helping all the guests You walk pass the old woman in distress Looking at the foods, her mind criss-crossed like a nest She’s trying to figure out which meal is the best She has little money, but she don’t want to use the rest Picking up pieces of change off the Earth’s crest Because it’s hard out here and the bank is where it hurts And that’s why the Lena’s workers work It’s a place where a family grew roots Where each person shares positions of working in Fresh fruits and work boots

White’s Barber Shop by Darius La’Von Johnson What a difference a haircut makes It brings my mood from deep dark Caves to a beautiful summer day, Towel on the sand... at the lake You would’ve never thought getting cut would actually be a good thing the biggest smile come across my face as soon as the alcohol stings  Especially since I’ve been here all day Arguing back and forth about the comparison Of Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Lebron James I didn’t move my feet unless I wanted to lose my seat I had everything I needed, a bottle of water and  a pack of jolly ranchers from the corner store across the street I just needed a line up, but the styles I seen leans me toward fades Almost makes me miss the days of a bald face and waves Now alcohol stung and feelin very handsome Stop by the shoe man to see if he has the new J’s Then I’m out the door on my way Feeling lifted of much weight

The Closet Room by Shawn Matlock The Closet Room (Barber Shop) With red, white and blue pole, All matching work clothes Where they play many roles And the chairs that many souls have chose And there’s sharp sounds that you hear Like the sharp razors are here Don’t have a stage of fear Just because a shave is near Where there’s brushed waves for wales And the souls told tales, Every cut never fails, And when done, you hear bells To ring up and wait for the next sell The swept hair with the hay broom Where many relationships bloom And you could only assume That this only happens in The Closet Room
