NanoScience (Technology) • Nanoscience involves research to discover new behaviors  and properties of materials with dimensions at the ‘nanoscale’  which ranges roughly from 1 to 100 nanometers(nm).

Nanoscale is defined as ‘one billionth of a meter’. How small is  that? Some ways to think about just how small a nanometer is: – A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick. – A blond-color human hair is probably 15,000 to 50,000 nanometers in diameter, black-color hair is likely to be between 50,000 and 180,000 nanometers. – There are 25,400,000 nanometers in an inch. – A nanometer is a millionth of a millimeter.

NanoScience (Technology) • Nanotechnology is the way in which discoveries  made at the nanoscale are put to work.  Nanotechnology is more than throwing together a  batch of nanoscale materials—it requires the  ability to manipulate and control those materials in  a useful way. • What is special about the nanoscale? In short,  materials can have different properties at the  nanoscale— some are better at conducting  electricity or heat, some are stronger, some have  different magnetic properties, and some reflect  light better or change colors as their size is  changed NovaQuest International School, Career Center Copyright 2008 , 12 F.C.C.Gulberg-IV, Lahore, Pakistan. Phone: 042-5777804, 807

NanoScience (Technology) Examples of NanoMaterials: – New Skin: Scientists in Illinois are using corn protein  to create new skin and deliver medicine through  nanotubes.  – Researchers are discovering how nanoscale tracers  can uncover the sources of pollution in America's  farm fields and waters.  – Super Cloth: Using nanotechnology, Cornell  scientists created a fabric that can detect biohazards  like E. coli and other pathogens.  – Disease Detectors: Scientists have developed  nanoscale biosensors that can help detect diseases  on farms and in hospitals.

Materials Sciences • Material Sciences involves the research and  discovery of new materials and strengthening the  properties of existing materials that are used in: – Airplanes, Space Stations, HighPerformance  Engines, Electronic and Mechanical products,  Medical Instruments and Prosthetics, Construction  of HiRise Buildings etc.. • Typical Materials are: – Ceramics – Composites & Fiber – Light Weight Alloys, Metals, and Sheets

NovaQuest International School, Career Center Copyright 2008 , 12 F.C.C.Gulberg-IV, Lahore, Pakistan. Phone: 042-5777804, 807

Optical Technology • Optical Technology involves research and  • • • •

development of products that use ‘Fiber Optics’ as the  transmission Medium. This includes “OpenAir” Optics  Most Information Networks in the 21st Century will be  based on FiberOptics Most Medical and Surgical Instrumentation / devices  will require FiberOptics FiberOptics are used in almost all military ground and  air command and control systems. This technology will be so pervasive that even  household appliances will be utilizing FiberOptics for  command and control
