And since a new school year can be worrisome for parents and children with food allergies, this edition also shares safety suggestions to prepare students and school staff for adhering to dietary special needs (page 24).

Now is also the perfect time to remind your student to be on the lookout for kids who are new to their classroom. A little kindness goes a long way toward settling children who may feel lonely or out

of place into their unfamiliar school environment (page 26). Taking someone under their wing can also help children ease their own new-school-year anxiety!

New Treat Combos

’mores are a summer staple for a reason, and while the classic recipe never disappoints, it’s also easy to turn the nostalgic treat into something a little more playful. Whether families are gathering around a fire pit, setting up a backyard campout, hosting a barbecue, or planning an at-home movie night, a few simple add-ins can make s’mores feel special for kids and adults alike. Think creamy nut or seed butters, fresh or freeze-dried fruit, a drizzle of caramel or honey, crunchy nuts, coconut, or even a sprinkle of sea salt.

Summer S’Mores Caramel Delight: Top the bottom graham cracker half with chocolate, then add a dollop of cashew butter followed by a few chopped cashews. Cover with a toasted marshmallow, along with a pinch of sea salt and a small drizzle of caramel sauce. Cover with the top graham cracker and let sit to melt before enjoying.

Tropical Vibes: Start with a base of graham cracker and dark chocolate. Cover with a toasted marshmallow, then garnish with toasted coconut and crumbled, freeze-dried mango.

Chocolate Strawberry Cheesecake: Start with a graham cracker, then add dark chocolate and a dollop of ricotta or cream cheese. Cover with a toasted marshmallow and sliced strawberries.

Cool Mint: Cover a dark chocolate graham cracker with milk or dark chocolate and a toasted marshmallow. Add a dusting of crushed mint candy and cover with the top graham cracker.

Elvis-style: Peanut Butter, Banana, Bacon, and Honey — Spread peanut butter over a graham cracker. Cover that with a banana and a toasted marshmallow, then follow with crumbled cooked bacon and a tiny drizzle of honey.

Back-toSchool Reset Weekly Guide to Easing into Routines

he lazy days of summer are winding down, and the back-to-school transition is approaching fast. Instead of diving in headfirst, take a gradual approach to ease kids (and yourself) into the new routine. This week-by-week guide will help you prepare for a smoother start to the school year, no matter your child’s age.

Three Weeks Before School Starts: Establish Sleep Schedules — The shift from late summer nights to early school mornings can be tough, so start adjusting now. Slowly easing into a consistent sleep routine will make those first school mornings much smoother.

Preschool and Elementary: Gradually move bedtime earlier by 15-30 minutes every few days. Wake kids up earlier to match school wake-up times.

Middle and High School: Reinforce bedtime limits, especially for teens who have shifted into a August 2026

late-night summer schedule. Start cutting back on late-night screen time.

For Parents: Adjust your own sleep schedule if necessary. Set a personal bedtime routine to ensure you’re well-rested before the school rush begins.

Two Weeks Before School Starts: Organize and Plan — With the first day approaching, now is the time to get organized. This is the perfect week for supply shopping, finalizing schedules, and getting kids excited about the school year ahead.

Preschool: Begin practicing simple routines like getting dressed, packing a bag, and using the bathroom independently.

Elementary: Review school supply lists and take kids shopping. Let them pick out some of their own items to get excited for school.

Middle and High School: Organize supplies, binders, and backpacks.

s the new school year begins, a question many parents ask themselves is which extracurricular activities to sign their kids up for. If their school or your local community offers lots of options, how do you choose? Start by talking to your kids about their particular interests. Here’s a list to get the conversation going:

Cybersecurity Lessons for the New School Year

he back-to-school season is exciting — new knowledge, new digital tools, and new discoveries. But it also brings higher cybersecurity risks for both schools and children.

Cybersecurity experts are urging children, parents, and school communities to stay extra alert during this period.

“The back-to-school period requires additional efforts to keep children and school communities safe online. A new beginning means new digital tools, online searches, and registrations for learning platforms. All of that increases cyber risks that must be taken seriously,” Karolis Arbačiauskas, head of product at NordPass, said.

A new study by NordPass, in collaboration with NordStellar, reveals a worrying truth: many educational institutions are still using shockingly weak passwords to protect sensitive data. Entries like “123456” appeared frequently, showing a widespread reliance on predictable or outdated credentials August 2026

that are easy for hackers to guess.

This is why the back-to-school season is the perfect moment to talk to children about cyber hygiene — the dos and don’ts in digital environments — and to help them build strong habits for digital security and privacy.

“Learning about cybersecurity can be fun. Many families of cybersecurity professionals make it a game — they host a small party with snacks and guide their children through five simple but essential exercises,” Arbačiauskas said.

Cybersecurity experts advise to take these steps to preserve your own cybersecurity and that of your family members (it can also be used as inspiration for your family’s Cyber Party): Create strong and unique passwords.

School Year Safety Tips For Children with Food Allergies

or parents of children with food allergies, starting a new school year can seem daunting. As the mom of a daughter with celiac disease, I know how overwhelming food allergies are at times. To ensure a safe, positive school year that meets the needs of a food allergic child, follow these tips from moms and experts who’ve been there.

Communicate Early — The best time to communicate with teachers is early in the school year, before classroom celebration policies are established for the year.

Build a Team — A team invested in supporting your child includes teachers, coaches, and the school nurse. Tiffany Hinton, mom of three daughters with celiac disease and several food allergies, and author of GF Mom Certified, meets with all teachers and the nurse at the beginning of each school year. suggests supplying the nurse with necessary items such as EpiPens and allergy medication.

Do Your Research — Newly diagnosed? Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) provides helpful resources to support families.

Put Requests in Writing — I write a letter every year that is shared with the teacher, school nurse, substitutes, and all extracurricular staff: PE, art, and music teachers. By providing information in writing, I August 2026

My letter defines celiac disease and cross contamination, and includes my daughter’s specific symptoms and history. I also ask for accommodations that will help include my child and ensure her safety. I keep it positive by always thanking people in advance for all they do to keep her allergy-safe.

“Setting up and following through with a 504 plan is the best tool to keep the school staff informed of what your child needs,” said Julie Bradley, secretary of National Celiac Association San Diego.

Maureen Dempsey, a Board Certified Educational Advocate said, “Any child with a food allergy qualifies for a 504.” She advised parents to read section 504 on the U.S. Department of Education’s website and contact a local education advocate if needed.

Be Direct and Specific — Not all allergic reactions are the same. Be specific about your child’s reactions, whether they are life-threatening and require an EpiPen or are more hidden as is the case with celiac disease where, according to Bradley, obvious symptoms may not be exhibited, but internal damage may still occur.

Hinton finds it helpful to share a photo of how a past allergic reaction looked when it began to help educate the teacher.

Ask for What You Need — “Explain how you would best like to receive communication,” Hinton said. www.sonomafamilylife.com

“I prefer an email or text message at least two days before an activity to ensure I have a safe [alternative] for my daughter.”

Bradley said teachers should avoid putting a child on the spot to read labels right before an activity.

Label-reading requires keen attention to detail. Request that teachers always communicate with parents, even if a food seems safe. She also recommended educating staff about the importance of proper hand and desk washing.

Party Safely — I provide a list of kid-friendly, allergen-safe foods to room parents, and ask that alternative snacks from the list are incorporated into class parties. Keep a stash of cupcakes and donuts in the freezer to

have on hand. Fill a special lunchbox with your child’s favorite allergen-free snacks and keep it in the classroom.

Create a Culture of Awareness — FARE suggests speaking with teachers about the role of food in the classroom to help lower the risk of an allergic reaction.

Perhaps non-food items and activities can be emphasized during cultural events and holiday traditions. Hinton likes to share food-allergy books with elementary classrooms to spread awareness, such as Itchy Pig by Nicole Bruno Cox. Teach Kids to Self-Advocate — Self-awareness is the most important element according to Hinton.

occurs and how it presents itself helps them begin to understand allergies.

“Empower your child to understand what is safe to eat, and why and how to speak up if another child wants to trade or share food,” Hinton said.

Make Lunchtime Safe and Enjoyable — Use a separate table at school to help avoid cross-contamination or trading food.

Have kids help choose fun, colorful lunchboxes, placemats, and containers.

Before school starts, stock the pantry and bake freezable, allergen-free snacks and reheatable breakfast favorites.

Student mobility can be voluntary, such as changing schools to participate in a magnet program, or involuntary, as was my case, due to a change in a parent’s job.

Classroom Kindness Teach Children to Watch for New Kids

adjusted my off-the-shoulder sweatshirt covered in splatter paint. Stylish as I thought I looked, my sweatshirt did little to distract from the fact that I was a 5’8” tall 12-year-old standing alone outside a middle school classroom. It was the first day of school and I knew no one. My family had just relocated to the area from several states away.

As I waited for the door to my classroom to open, I saw two girls whispering nearby.

“Smile,” I thought to myself as my lips curled over my teeth, covered in braces. “Make new friends,” I could hear my mother’s voice inside my head coaching me.

They approached, with the kind of confidence reserved for kids who grow up in the same place their whole lives.

“Are you the new teacher?” one of them asked.

“No,” I replied. Then I froze. I knew I was taller than the average 12-year-old, but had I just been mistaken for an adult? “I’m a new student here,” I told them.

And then they walked away.

But on that uncomfortable first day, I was not thinking about what kind of statistic I was. All I knew was that I was alone, nervous, and scared. The experience of being the new kid has encouraged me to teach

Below are 10 concrete ways I’m teaching my kids to help the new kid in school. May you find these helpful to share with your own kids as the school year begins: 1. Recognize that there will be new kids at school, kids who do not know anyone. Look for them, don’t look past them.

2. Say hi. Ask where the new kid is from. Do they have any pets or siblings?

3. Sit with the new kid at lunch. Oh my word, at least sit with them at lunch on the first day!

4. Invite the new kid to hang out after school.

5. Did I mention just talk to the new kid? It’s OK if you’re not best friends. Maybe you won’t have anything in common. But if you never even talk to the new kid, then you won’t find out if you have anything in common or not.

6. Tell the new kid about clubs, sports, or other activities at school.

When I was invited to join the basketball team, I gained a whole team of friends.

7. Help the new kid find things like the gym and the cafeteria.

8. Sit with them on the bus or stand with them at the pick-up loop. Even if it’s just for a day or two.

9. Compliment the new kid. Maybe they have a cool backpack. Maybe they’re wearing a shirt with a sports team that is also your favorite

Regional Parks Clean-up

R

iverfront Regional Parks volunteers are needed to remove trash, and possibly invasive species, to keep the shoreline and aquatic ecosystem healthy for native species. Participants should dress in layers, wear comfortable, closed-toe hiking shoes, and bring a hat and sunscreen.

Ages 13 and under require a parent or guardian present. Ages 14–17 may participate independently with a signed permission slip. Organizers should be informed ahead of time if volunteers have accessibility needs. Parking fees are waived for volunteers.
