Post-Natal Care For New Mothers In Asian Society Most postnatal customs include a special diet, isolation, rest and assistance for the mother. The main focus should be on the rest and care of the mother.

Childbirth and the period after that represents one of the most important transit periods of a woman's life. The postnatal period of confinement is commonly practiced in many Asian countries and is usually observed for a little more than a month. The origin of confinement for new mothers can be traced back to China. Although the customs followed across different cultures vary, there are many things in common between them. Postnatal care also impacts the mental health of the mother. Good knowledge is necessary for good postnatal care. Attention should be given especially on the early phases immediately after the delivery when the mothers become most vulnerable. The practice of confinement in Asian cultures In Asian society, the postnatal period comprises of rituals, traditional health beliefs, and taboos. Nourish confinement meals are provided to the mother to give her the required diet. The mother needs ample rest for healing purposes. This period also helps the mother to adjust to the ways by which she can take care of the infant. These ways include breastfeeding techniques, taking proper food that could enhance breast milk and so on. In almost all countries, maternity leaves are granted to working mothers. The maternity leave enables a mother to stay away from the stress of the office work for a while. Postpartum physiological changes occur in the mother's body after childbirth. These changes

return the state of the body to the pre-pregnancy period. These procedures take place in a normal way but in most cases, complications may arise that may lead to some health problems. So the mother's mind should be kept stress free and away from tension. Things that need to be taken care off Information needs to be provided to the mother before birth to make her understand about the lactation procedure and how to make the process of breastfeeding successful. Sucking causes the pituitary gland to release oxytocin. Oxytocin, in turn, contacts the uterus and reduces bleeding. To make sure that the area around the nipple does not get cracked, the mother may need pharmacological or non-pharmacological attention. During the pregnancy period, the immune system in the mother’s body shuts down in order to facilitate suitable conditions for the embryo in the body. After pregnancy, the immune system is reestablished. But in this period, infections caused by the autoimmune system may occur. Frequent checkup and proper medication help to fight against these infections. The caloric requirement in the postnatal period also varies from that during normal time. Vitamins become an essential requirement for the body during this time. Nutritional supplements, increasing the intake of fluids and nourish

confinement meals are recommended to cope up with the needs of the body during this period. Also, weight loss should be monitored to ensure recovery. Weight loss also affects the lactation procedure. Conclusion Proper education and discussion with specialists and doctors before and after pregnancy greatly reduces anxiety. Medications and some basic household methods also decrease the pain and discomfort during this period.
