Mission We accept from God the call to reach out to the people with unmet needs, to nurture in them a conviction of God’s love that they may recognize their own gifts in and through their limitations and pain.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT November 2023 Greetings to you all in the spirit of hope and unity! As I sit down to reflect on the past year, the challenges and the opportunities that have come our way, I am filled with gratitude for the continued dedication and support of our extended Notre Dame family. In a world marred by division, chaos, violence, and poverty, we find ourselves asking, "How do we bring light to those in darkness, those longing for peace and justice?" Our response remains resolute; we continue to persevere. We persist in our mission to reach out to people with unmet needs, to nurture in them a conviction of God’s love that they may recognize their own gifts in and through their limitations and pain. To do this, I find it means we need: Prayer Understanding and Openness Healing and Reconciliation Attentive Listening Peaceful Presence Our efforts may not always yield quick and smooth results; however, they require us to work together, listen attentively, be open to diverse viewpoints, trust in the Spirit's work, negotiate ideas, reconsider options, and stay faithful to God's promise that, "I am with you, and together you have all you need." In our Omaha Province, we currently have 29 Sisters, with 24 residing in Omaha and 5 living out of state. In light of our Sisters' health needs, this past year we have taken significant steps to ensure their well-being. We hired a Director of Health Care, Theresa Swoboda, RN, to assist us in caring for our Sisters. Theresa's presence ensures that the Sisters receive the highest quality of care now and enables us to assesses our future needs to continue providing the best possible support. Currently, Notre Dame Housing, occupying the former Notre Dame Academy, now houses over 125 lowincome seniors, including 12 Notre Dame Sisters. Today, it is the primary ministry of the Notre Dame Sisters, and we take pride in its role in our legacy. Notre Dame Housing provides programming to thousands in our community. We are excited to share that we have begun remodeling the Life Enrichment Center at Notre Dame Housing. This remodel features a modern food pantry, a dedicated space for group exercise, a large meeting area for programs and group discussions, and an entertainment area equipped with chairs, couches, TVs, and games. This rejuvenated space will not only benefit our residents but also the broader community. Enjoy reading about our accomplishments from this past year and join us in prayer to have a successful 2023-2024 fiscal year. May we continue to embrace life each day, honoring our connectedness with each other. We recognize that the journey may be challenging, but with faith, love, and unity, "together we have it all." With heartfelt gratitude and blessings,
Sr. Rita Ostry, ND President, Omaha Province PAGE 3

FAITH INTO ACTION
You put your Faith into Action this past year and it certainly shows. Your actions allowed us to hire a full-time registered nurse to assess our healthcare needs going forward, supported our annual fundraiser Celebration of Spirit, as well as our online community giving days. She provides input and suggestions to the Notre Dame Sister’s Leadership Team.
CELEBRATION OF SPIRIT
HEALTHCARE NEEDS Theresa Swoboda, RN, MD, was hired to provide health care to the Notre Dame Sisters through healthcare management, nursing care, health education, prevention, and navigating the healthcare system. She is dedicated to providing care through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach within our complex health system. PAGE 4
Our annual Celebration of Spirit unfolded on March 26th at the Happy Hollow Club, offering guests a delightful dinner and the chance to bid on over 137 items. The event proved to be a tremendous success, raising over $163,586. The palpable spirit during this occasion is truly felt by everyone in attendance.
GIVING DAYS Participating in events like the Joy of Giving, Do Good Week, and Giving Tuesday in the Omaha area, where the community is encouraged to support their favorite nonprofits, we collectively raised over $11,738. These contributions highlight the generosity and commitment of our community, underscoring the impact that can be achieved when faith is translated into meaningful action.

2022-2023 FINANCIALS We were blessed to reach over $1.2 million in revenue between July 1, 2022, and June 20, 2023.
2022-2023 FINANCIALS This financial success is attributed to a variety of sources, including salaries from our employed Sisters, Social Security, retirement benefits for those who have retired, generous donations and charitable contributions from individuals who support the mission of the Notre Dame Sisters and legacy gifts from those that have named the Sisters in their estate planning. It is important to acknowledge that our financial responsibilities have also grown. The largest share of our expenses is directed towards healthcare, living expenses, and the operational needs of the province. As anticipated, the costs associated with healthcare and living expenses continue to increase due to the aging population of the Sisters. As our Sisters age, additional resources will be needed for the day-to-day operations of the Notre Dame Sisters.

MISSION MINISTRIES We are a group Sisters involved in a wide range of service ministries. Guiding our areas of service is our mission “to meet unmet needs.” This translates into work, including supporting senior housing, eliminating domestic violence, serving immigrants, and advocating for human rights.

Notre Dame Housing (NDH), former Notre Dame Academy and Motherhouse, provides housing for over 125 low-income seniors.
It goes beyond being just a residence; Notre Dame Housing fosters a community where seniors can thrive, contribute, and receive comprehensive holistic care. This innovative approach challenges conventional notions of housing, health, and addresses senior poverty with dignity, grace, and hope. Emerging from an idea in the 1990s, NDH has evolved into a model for affordable senior housing in Omaha. It stands out as a senior housing facility in Omaha offering a service coordinator, a public senior center, and an on-site Life Enrichment Coordinator. Breaking it down, the service coordinator works individually with residents to ensure they don't miss any available opportunities. This includes access to health benefits, inhome assistance, guidance with Medicare and Medicaid, assistance in finding appropriate transportation, and registering service animals.
PAGE 7
Instead of navigating a maze of organizations and endless phone calls, residents can simply walk downstairs and meet with a dedicated professional for assistance. The Life Enrichment Coordinator ensures that seniors can participate in Notre Dame Housing's programs. The public spaces within the facility echo with laughter and conversation, fostering a sense of community. Programs are designed to combat isolation, address food insecurity, and offer educational opportunities. In 2022 alone, the Life Enrichment Center at Notre Dame Housing hosted over 283 programs, engaging more than 7,000 participants. Notre Dame Housing further extends its impact through a weekly food pantry, providing free, healthy produce and staples to residents and anyone in the community, with no questions asked. In 2022, the housing initiative distributed more than 63,000 pounds of food to the community.
NOTRE DAME SISTERS
Safe Homes remains a steadfast ministry for the Notre Dame Sisters. In the previous year alone, we aided 151 women and 259 children in breaking free from the vicious cycle of domestic violence. The ministry is dedicated to addressing the urgent needs of those undergoing such hardships, helping them initiate the process of rebuilding their lives.
The Sisters contribute to creating safe homes by financing essential items required for women and their children. These items encompass the initial months' rent, utilities, daycare, legal expenses, or other initial expenditure necessary for a woman to embark on her new life outside of a shelter. This crucial support enables them to establish a stable foundation for their future. At our annual Celebration of Spirit Dinner, we proudly showcased and supported this impactful ministry. Through our collective efforts, we successfully raised approximately $30,000 in funding for the program during the“raise the paddle” portion of the event. In the past year, the Sisters allocated over $97,000 in financial assistance, directly benefiting 410 women and children combined.
The color purple represents survivors of Domestic Violence. The color is meant to be a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending violence.”

This underscores our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by domestic violence, providing them with the means to start anew and fostering hope for a brighter future. An integral aspect of our ministry involves reaching out to women during their transition period. Sister Marie Alice plays a pivotal role in this process, engaging in conversations with survivors to offer not only words of encouragement but also connecting them with valuable free resources within our community. Many have shared accounts of Sr. Marie Alice Ostry acting as a personal cheerleader, steadfastly encouraging these women as they navigate their journey to recovery.
NOTRE DAME SISTERS
COMMUNITY MINISTRIES The Notre Dame Sisters are actively engaged in a range of community ministries. Here are some areas of focus:
SERVING HOMELESS VETERANS Sr. Stephanie Matcha, ND, assists homebound, disabled veterans who live in veteran apartment facilities by providing them with rides to medical appointments, food pantries and veteran events. Because many are on fixed incomes, she provides them with food, clothes, and personal items as needed. She continues to assist the Siena Francis House Homeless Shelter with their Veteran’s Day Celebration to ensure Veterans know they are appreciated and to thank them for their service.
SERVING ON BOARDS The Notre Dame Sisters have had a strong presence in education over their years of existence. They were called to educate those who did not have easy access to education. Even now in their retirement, they continue educating in many ways. One example is Sr. Margaret Hickey’s service on Roncalli Catholic High School’s (RCHS) Board. The Notre Dame Sisters maintain a strong support for RCHS because they helped to form the school in 1974 along with the Christian Brothers. The mission and legacy of both congregations stay strong within the school community and each in-coming class is taught the history of the school, from Notre Dame Academy and Rummel High School to Roncalli Catholic. Sr. Margaret and the Notre Dame Sisters are helping to assure the bright future of RCHS.
PRESERVING THE SISTERS LEGACY As archivist for the Notre Dame Sisters, Sr. Anita Rolenc, ND, is responsible for updating the biographies of the Sisters, recording events of the year in the annual Chronicle, preserving documents, photographs, and historical data, writing “Snippets from the Archives“ for the monthly Clarion, and providing information for the Provincial Team and the Advancement Office, and visitors seeking information on Sisters and relatives.

European Sisters Visit In a heartwarming and meaningful event, the Notre Dame Sisters in Omaha, Nebraska, welcomed two very special guests from Europe in July: Mother Metoda Piatnickova and Sister Fidelis Jaksicova. Mother Metoda is the General Superior over all four Provinces in the Notre Dame Sisters Congregation – the Bavarian Province from Germany, the Czech Province, the Slovak Province, and the United States Province. Managing her responsibilities, Mother Metoda divides her time between offices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Sister Fidelis, residing in České Budějovice in the Czech Republic, is a dedicated teacher by profession. This event marked a historic moment, aligning with the 170th celebration of the founding of the Notre Dame order in Hirshau, Bohemia, dating back to 1853. The significance of this visit reached far beyond geographical boundaries, uniting the global Notre Dame community in a profound way. The Sisters in Omaha were deeply touched by the wisdom and grace shared by Mother Metoda and Sister Fidelis, an experience that strengthened the bonds of sisterhood and reaffirmed their commitment to the values and principles guiding their order for nearly two centuries. As they celebrated this momentous occasion, the Sisters found renewed inspiration to carry forth their legacy into the future, continuing their vital work in education, social justice, and compassion for the betterment of society.
