Heart of Worship:

Prepare Him Room by Michaela Frantz

Christmas Eve, I find myself standing in church, singing Christmas carols and

gazing at the beautiful candles, thinking that I feel completely unprepared to fully celebrate the birth of my Savior and King. It’s not that I didn’t do the advent calendars and didn’t hear “Jesus is the reason for the season!” a few times, because I sure did. I think my problem is that I get so excited about all of the magical Christmas time traditions (which, let’s be honest, are rarely ever as magical as people make them out to be) that I forget to slow down and ‘prepare Him room.’ Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, used to be all about Him. Not Christmas trees, cookie baking days, a million shopping trips, ugly Christmas sweater parties, cute seasonal clothes, or holiday drinks. Now, I am definitely a fan of all of the traditions, don’t get me wrong, but, for me, those things tend to crowd out time to reflect on the significance of perfect love coming to be with me. God knew He was sending a precious piece of Himself to walk dirty roads, see sin up close, and be treated like a criminal. Yet. He still sent Jesus because He desired for us to be known and know His love and grace. Everything we have ever wanted in a romantic novel or movie and more is so evident in the Christmas story. My heart just wants to burst at the thought of such sweet love. How can I not take some time to dwell on this beautiful piece of His story? How can I not join the shepherds, angels, and wise men at the manger to adore the tiny baby whose birth changed everything? This year, I want my December to look like the picture on the right, not the left. I want to be full of joy and hope because of the Christmas story first and foremost. Then, because my heart is in the right place, I will be able to enjoy the other little things so much more. I will see family and presents and cookies as His gifts to me, not things that have to be perfect in order to make me happy. So what about you? Will you join me in preparing Him room in our hearts? Come, let us adore Him!
