Our Family Tree

Our Family Tree One summer day My brothers and I Went for a walk On our own. We found a small plant That was tiny and green Sprouting out Through a crack in a stone. We knew for a fact That this small helpless plant Would perish If left all alone. So we dug at its bottom And pulled on its top And broke the plant Free from the stone. We placed it with care In a pail full of dirt And with our plant We headed for home. “How will we care For our tiny green friend?” I said as we went through the door. “We must make a plan That will help it to grow.” Then I put the plant down On the floor.

Our Family Tree Ben said, “I’ll water it” Zach said, “I’ll feed it” I said I’d give it Just enough light. It had been quite a day For Ben, Zach and I So we all went to bed For the night. I woke in the morning And moved our new plant To a bright spot In the sun The heat of the rays Made our little plant sparkle I was proud of what We had done. By 10am The plant’s wilting leaves Said, “Push me away from the light!” And since Ben and Zach Were still asleep Food and water Would be all right.

Our Family Tree Plant watered, Plant fed I headed for school. Zack woke up knowing He had something to do. He found food in the kitchen, Poured it on to the plant. It looked so lonely in the shade, Zach said, “Leave it there, I can’t.” He pulled the plant to the sun and said, “Yes, That looks much better”. “And because you look a little dry, I’ll make you a little wetter.” Zach went out the door to play And Ben woke up at last. “I’ve got to water our plant downstairs – It must be lunch or past!” He grabbed his watering can and Found the plant sitting in the sun. He gave it some water Then a little bit more Since he’ d slept ‘till almost one. Ben thought the plant looked a little pale So he gave it some extra food. Then he grabbed his books And went to school In a very happy mood. Http://Nothing-like-it.blogspot.com

Our Family Tree We all came home for dinner Thinking nothing of our plant We’d done our jobs just right that day And thought no more of that. Ben, Zach and I went up to bed And in the morning we came down to see How tall our plant had grown that night Two inches? Maybe Three? Our small green plant had disappeared In its place sat a droopy weed Its leaves were on the floor, And brown We shouted, “How can this be?” “I gave it the right amount of sun And the right amount of shade!” Zach shouted, “I fed it!” Ben said, “I watered it.” Mom whispered, “Its dead I’m afraid.” “If you’ll take it back to its place in the woods It might just be OK.” “I wouldn’t wait, I’d do it now, This morning, Today.” We grabbed the plant In its bucket of dirt And went back to the stone.

Our Family Tree With every care We put it back And left the plant alone. Some time went by so we went to the woods And were very happy to see Our plant was tall And full of leaves It had grown into a tree!
