Welcome to Theatre Royal We are delighted to feature two of the very best large-scale musicals touring the UK at the moment in this brochure, as the Royal Shakespeare Company’s award-winning Matilda The Musical comes to Norwich in summer 2019, following Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Miss Saigon as our next summer blockbuster.   I have seen and absolutely loved Matilda. It is an utterly joyful and fun show that will delight people of all ages. It also has a strong message about the strength of the individual spirit and the value of learning, a message that we live everyday here through our learning and participation work with young people and adults (see pages 58 - 65). Alongside these two epic musicals, I am thrilled that 2018 sees us form a new producing collaboration with our longstanding partner Kenny Wax and Global Musicals to stage the first ever professional performances and open a UK tour of SIX at Norwich Playhouse.  With a similar feel to the current global smash, Hamilton, this is an unashamedly irreverent, fun and celebratory account of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. It is one of the most exciting pieces of musical theatre I have seen in a long time and I implore you to see it in Norwich first before it too becomes a smash hit.   In addition to a feast of musical theatre, our drama programme goes from strength to strength with the National Theatre’s new production of Macbeth (directed by Artistic Director, Rufus Norris) visiting us this autumn.  It promises to be an epic and visually arresting staging and I salute the National Theatre for continuing its commitment to regional touring, following Curious Incident, Jane Eyre and Hedda Gabler last year, and we very much look forward to building on this important artistic partnership.   In Stage Two, we’ve been bowled over by the reaction to our last Creative Matters season focussed on Men’s Mental Health, and our next one in May, on Caring for Dementia, is set to be our biggest yet, with performances and activities across the Theatre Royal, Playhouse and Stage Two (see page 58).  Whilst this work is small in scale, it is huge in impact and it’s integral to our mission of using the power of arts and creativity to help people discover and support themselves and others.   We are going on an exciting journey with lots of new developments and projects both on and off our stages. If you’d like to help support us in all of our work then there has never been a better time and we have some great schemes that allow you to get involved and that will give you the opportunity to come on this journey with us.

Produced in the West End by Nica Burns, Neal Street Productions and Headlong

Thursday 3 - Saturday 5 May

An energetic new production of one of the world’s most beloved operas. Figaro and Susanna must overcome every obstacle put in their way by Count Almaviva and his cronies before they can finally be married. Blanche McIntyre (Tosca, 2017) returns to direct this most warm-hearted of operas.

Puccini’s IL TABARRO & GIANNI SCHICCHI (Sat 5) Sung in Italian with English surtitles visible from all seats These two one-act operas could hardly be more different: the first is a moody romance ending in a grotesque murder on a barge in Paris, and the second is a sparkling comedy about a family inheritance in Florence. First performed in 2011 to great acclaim, this double bill shows Puccini at his finest as a master of theatre that speaks to the heart. Eves 7.30pm a) £37.50 10

Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread.

James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs. Directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall), This House gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.

Wednesday 25 - Saturday 28 July It’s 1959 and the teenagers of Rydell High are back at school after their summer break. The duck-tailed, hot-rodding boys, and the gum-snapping, hip-shaking girls conjure up the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head greaser Danny and good girl Sandy try to relive the Summer Lovin’ of their holiday romance, whilst the rest of the gang sing and dance their way through You’re The One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and more.

You don’t want all your dreams to come true

a dance by Kim Brandstrup Thursday 27 - Friday 28 September With dramatic and lyrical dancing from Rambert’s brilliant ensemble, Life is a Dream is a lavish spectacle, an emotional reflection on timeless questions, and a vivid piece of contemporary dance story-telling.

Legendary filmmakers the Quay Brothers place the action in an ever-changing, dream-like world, and a full-size symphony orchestra adds to the otherworldly atmosphere with the rich, harmonious music of Witold Lutosławski. Kim Brandstrup, choreographer of Rambert’s award-winning Transfigured Night, returns with a full-length work telling a story of alienation, vengeance, tenderness and redemption.

“Superbly constructed, inventively musical, beautiful and profoundly humane” The Guardian on Transfigured Night

In the same room, many decades apart: a woman incarcerated, presumed mad; a boy experiencing the world through his computer screen; a theatre group discovering a 400-year-old Spanish play with surprising relevance today. As their parallel stories unfold, their room transforms. The characters are transported to a bustling city, a dense forest, an opulent garden, a vast arid plain. Could it be that too many of their dreams are coming true…?

will take place in the Targetfollow Room at the theatre on Friday 28 Sept at 6.30pm. Tickets are FREE but must be booked in advance 33 from the Box Office.

“Cirque du Soleil’s hipper, sexier cousin.” The Stage, London “Extraordinary! There’s the circus, and then there’s Cirque Éloize. These guys are on a whole other level.” New York Post The critically acclaimed circus extravaganza Cirkopolis - by Montreal-based troupe Cirque Éloize - is set to thrill audiences of all ages, in Norwich this autumn. Classic acrobatics and tightly choreographed dance numbers are performed against a backdrop of original video projections. Experience perfectly-timed dance passionately delivered with a combination of narrative, circus skills and an extraordinary soundtrack that fills the theatre even before the curtain rises. Expect jugglers, contortionists and Cyr-wheel artists in pieces inspired by the struggle to escape a soul-crushing industrialized city. The poignant but still family-friendly Cirkopolis, is a particularly stunning combination of theatre, modern dance, original music, evocative projections and top-notch circus skills. No wonder it has sold out more than 4,000 performances in over 550 cities and 50 countries. Suitable for ages 8+
