SWINE FLU UPDATE

While the novel H1N1 Virus, Human Swine Flu, media coverage has seemed to quiet down as of late, it definitely does not mean the threat is over. Far from it. As a matter of fact, public health officials believe the start of the 2009 school season will see newly reported cases swell exponentially, and there is fear of mutation to an even deadlier strain. However, many people feel that since the average flu causes roughly 50,000 deaths annually in the U.S., there’s no reason to worry about this virus. That is a very dangerous stance. New information analyzed by the CDC indicates the novel H1N1 Virus has shown the unique ability to attack very healthy people - especially young people. As a matter of fact, the largest number of cases have been in people between the ages of 5 and 24 years of age. Which definitely puts school age children at great risk. The incidence of contagion has been higher in young people under the age of 25 - than it has been in the typical flu high risk class of people older than 64. However, people with high risk medical conditions appear to be at greater risk for contracting all types of influenza, including the novel H1N1. These high risk conditions include asthma, heart & kidney disease, diabetes, suppressed immunity cases, pregnancy, neurocognitive, and neuromuscular disorders. Due to the fact that these conditions are more prevalent in the elderly - does put our senior community at greater risk as well. The novel H1N1 Virus, unlike the average flu, can cause a healthy immune system to overreact, which can lead to a pneumonia like condition, and ultimately cause death. That is why we need to remain extremely proactive in combatting the H1N1 Virus. It remains a serious threat. How Swine Influenza Virus Is Spread Generally infection occurs where individuals have contact with pigs. Cases are reported every year. The novel H1N1 Virus can be transmitted via person to person as we’re now seeing. Transmission occurs when infected respiratory moisture comes in contact with objects or another persons eyes, nose, or mouth - either directly or more likely by touching these areas of the body with now contaminated, unwashed, hands. How Long Can An Infected Person Be Contagious Whether it be seasonal flu or the novel H1N1 virus, contagion can occur from 1 day prior to symptoms appearing - up to 7 days after becoming sick. In children, and high risk people, this can even be longer. Especially with the new novel H1N1 Virus. That is why prevention is so important.

What Can I Do To Protect Myself Currently there is no novel H1N1 vaccine available, although there is one in production. Of course, there are vaccines available for seasonal flu. When dealing with any contagious virus such as seasonal or novel H1N1 influenza - there are practical steps you can take to protect yourself: 1. Wash your hands with soap and water often. Especially after you cough or sneeze. Use hand sanitizers, especially when washing is not practical. 2. During coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Properly dispose of afterwards. Do not use again or leave on a surface. 3. Germs can enter your body through your mouth, nose, and even your eyes. Avoid touching them unless you wash your hands before and after. 4. Avoid contact with sick people. Stay home if you have flu-like symptoms. Intervention & Prevention Within Your Facility Proper hand washing, for a full 20 seconds, using soap and water is the most important behavior in preventing influenza contagion. Emphasize this fact emphatically with everyone within your facility - including visitors! If soap and water is not present, in accordance with CDC guidelines, use a hand sanitizer such as our North Woods® D-Germ or Derma Foam Hand Sanitizer. Placing readily accessible containers and dispensers in all areas is highly advisable. Make hand sanitation convenient. Many schools, nursing homes, and hospitals are now placing hand sanitizing stations in hallways and in every room. The CDC is recommending good solid cleaning practices utilizing hospital grade disinfectants. North Woods® ready to use, hospital grade disinfectant cleaners such as Mega Quat, Mega Wipes, and Sunbath are excellent choices. These products carry Influenza A efficacy - widely considered essential by pathogenic experts. Disinfection of the air is always an excellent practice during influenza outbreaks to help reduce contagious spread. North Woods® Mega-Cide, Sun Fresh, TB Plus, and our new Zone Defense Total Release Disinfectant Spray are phenomenal options. Ensure bathrooms, lunchrooms, classrooms, and common office areas are properly cleaned and disinfected daily. Again, wash your hands. These steps will all help reduce potential contagion spread within your facility. For specific up to the minute control measures involving the Influenza Strain H1N1, please reference the Centers for Disease Control link which is being updated as information becomes available http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/general_info.htm. ®
