to the “First” Rotary Club of Northwich River Festival. This is a unique event for the town, with activities focused on and around the River Weaver. The event, which has been 18 months in the planning, is aimed at celebrating the River’s importance to the town and to encourage visitors from near and far to explore what Northwich has to offer - both as a great tourist centre for boating and for the range of other attractions and shops in and around the town. We also hope to raise lots of money for our local good causes - including this year’s Rotary Club of Northwich Nominated Charity, St Luke’s Hospice Cheshire. I hope you all enjoy the weekend of activities we have arranged - including the Dragon Boat Racing, Northwich Rowing Regatta and the famous Duck Race! Don’t forget that on Saturday evening, we have our tribute to BritPop with live music at The Memorial Court. Full details of what’s on, and when, can be found in the middle of this programme. The weekend couldn’t have happened without the generous help and support of the committee, made up of representatives from: The Canal and River Trust, The River Weaver Navigation Society, Northwich Town Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Business Support from The Ian David Group, Northwich Marina and Northwich Rowing Club, as well as my fellow-Rotarians. Last - but by no means least - please support our sponsors and advertisers in the year ahead and don’t forget to cheer on the rowers and Dragon Boat teams! ton Chair, l a W The Rotary Club of Northwich John River Festival Committee CONTENTS

River Weaver Navigation Society Our society is delighted to participate in that all-too-rare phenomenon in Northwich, activity on its own delightful river, the Weaver. It is our aim to encourage use of this impressive, historic and picturesque navigation, thus providing more pleasure activities and job opportunities across the North West conurbation. The River Weaver Navigation Society last held a major Regatta in Northwich in 2012, on the current Marina site, which received high acclaim, and successfully invited HMS Charger to cruise to Northwich and allow visitors on board in 2014. We also organise the annual Regatta at Winsford (it's on Sept 15/17 this year) to promote use of the whole river, as Winsford is at the head of the navigation. So it is a matter of great delight to us that Northwich Rotary and Northwich Rowing Club are devoting their many skills and time to arranging this multiactivity weekend centred on our river. It will surely help to emphasise how lucky we are to have the benefit of a wonderful water playground, created by our forefathers for us now to enjoy. Our Society is delighted to be part of these festivities. Come and talk to us on our stand by Town Bridge, and find out how you can be part of the future of the River Weaver. Chair. Regatta Northwich Rowing Club is proud to host its annual Regatta this weekend as part of the Northwich River Festival. Rowing Clubs from across the UK will compete over a 900m course on Saturday, followed by Sprint & Super Sprint racing on Sunday.

Racing will start from Anderton Nature Park, home to Northwich’s famous boat lift, and finish at Baron’s Quay where visitors to the River Festival will have a spectacular view as boats race to the line. Northwich Rowing Club is well known for its strength at local, national and international level, and as the home club of Matthew Langridge, Gold Medal winner at the 2016 Olympics. We are delighted that Matthew will be presenting the prizes to our race winners over the weekend. The regatta promises to be an exciting part of the town’s celebrations and we hope you enjoy watching the competition. Turn to the middle pages of this programme for an overview of the weekend’s racing. For the full racing schedule, please see the dedicated Regatta Programme or visit:

The Canal & River Trust are the organisation who manage over 2000 miles of canals and rivers across England and Wales including, the Weaver Navigation here in Northwich. We are delighted to be working in partnership with the event organisers to bring this exciting event onto the Weaver Navigation with hopefully many visiting the waterway for the first time. This event is an exciting opportunity for people of all ages to explore the Weaver Navigation and take part in some fun activities on the river right in the heart of the town of Northwich. We do hope the people of Northwich and the surrounding area will appreciate how much the waterfront in Northwich has been transformed over recent years; with many more exiting improvements yet to be established. We would like to wish all the participants the very best of luck in their chosen events and we hope all those attending the event enjoy their visit to one of the major waterways in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. Wendy Capelle Waterway Manger - Canal & River Trust.
