ITH the latest employment figures showing a slight drop after months of stagnation the Government may have to consider some “pump-priming” of the economy if it is to glean necessary support before the Spring election. Also, if the latest Geo Directory’s report on house prices is to be taken as a barometer for an “upturn” it may have to look elsewhere to convince voters in the North-west that things are getting better. While the national average house sale price for the year was €217,544 the figure for Mayo was €109,159 - well below the national average. Over a period of one year 1,090 homes were sold . Of these sales 87% were second-hand dwellings. Also, additions to the housing stock for the year were just 0.3% compared with the national average of 0.7%. The situation was much worse in Roscommon, however, where 540 houses were sold with an average price of €82,517. This is particularly disappointing in a county where only 24 new homes were under construction, indicating poor demand for the existing housing stock. While auctioneers would point out there are certain regions well above and below these averages this only adds fuel to the argument that remote regions are suffering population displacement with people moving towards the larger towns. It is also disappointing that prices are so low with so few new-builds taking place. In Sligo the average price was slightly better, at €119,647, with 730 transactions, while in Galway homes reached an average price of €173,539 with sales reaching 2,502. Undoubtedly, prices are much higher in Dublin, for many different reasons. Continued on Page 2
