There’s something for everyone! With over 100 organizations at Northwestern State to choose from, students get involved! The organizations range from religious and service clubs to academic and honor organizations. We also have three Greek councils: College Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council. Northwestern State’s NCAA Division I athletics program involves nearly 400 student-athletes in 14 sports, many excelling on the national stage. What could you see during your days at NSU? A 2019 graduate who enrolled in 2014 enjoyed the Demons and Lady Demons reaching NCAA postseason play in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s tennis, volleyball, softball and baseball, winning 13 first-team All-American honors in track and field, while six former Demons made the NFL and 7 more went in the Major League Baseball draft. Along with competing at high levels, NSU athletes achieve in the classroom (a composite 3.0 GPA in 2018-19) and complete over 4,000 hours of community service each year. The university also offers intramural and club sports. In addition to the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band, there are four dynamic spirit groups - NSU Cheerleaders, Demon Dazzler Danceline, Purple Pizzazz Pom Line, and the Demon Heat Colorguard. Students may audition for selection and scholarships for these groups between April and May of their senior year. The state-of-the-art Wellness, Recreation, and Activity Center (WRAC) makes it easy for students to stay physically fit while remaining involved on campus. The facility includes a cardio theater, group exercise room, racquetball courts, and an indoor track. Students can enjoy the recreation complex near campus that includes an eighteen-hole golf course and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The recreation complex is also used frequently for barbecues and crawfish boils.

“The Governor’s Fellows program has been an eye opening experience. I have truly enjoyed getting an inside look at our state government. I know that the skills and experience I received from Northwestern State have prepared me for this program and have put me on a path to be successful!” 2019-20 SGA President - Jacob Ellis (Athens, LA)

Natchitoches

Northwestern State is the perfect sized university located in the ideal college town of Natchitoches, Louisiana. The community of approximately 20,000 was established in 1714 and is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. With one of only two National Historic Landmark Districts in the state, the quaint and lively town has much to discover including shopping, dining, and attractions plus a national historical park, museums, and year round cultural events and festivals. While Natchitoches has a community atmosphere, it is close to larger cities. Shreveport is only an hour away, and Dallas and New Orleans can be reached by interstate in approximately four hours.
