A Message from the Dean As we enter a season of giving thanks, I have had the chance to reflect on how far we’ve come over the last 12 months. I am humbled and grateful for the generosity of our alumni and friends during Fiscal Year 2013 (September 1, 2012–August 31, 2013). This was our second record-breaking year in a row. With over 3,000 alumni and friends making a gift in Fiscal Year 2013, we raised over $23 million, including over $2.3 million for the Law School Annual Fund. These numbers are truly incredible and will make a huge impact on the legal education our students receive, the financial aid we offer and the programs we support. This past fiscal year brought many exciting developments to Northwestern Law. Our students continued to excel, winning accolades at National Trial Team and Moot Court competitions. Nearly 100 students completed externships with judges across the country and 45 of our recent graduates held clerkships during Fiscal Year 2013. Distinguished faculty members continued to be recognized for their work, including David Scheffer, Director of the Center for International Human Rights and Mayer Brown/ Robert A. Helman Professor of Law, was named a Fall 2013 Berlin Fellow, Professor Kristin Stilt was named a Guggenheim Fellow and Professor Len Rubinowitz was awarded the Leonard Jay Schrager Award of Excellence by the Chicago Bar Foundation.

We added two new endowed professorships to our ranks, the Howard & Elizabeth Chapman Professorship and the Clayton J. and Henry R. Barber Professorship. I was honored to name two esteemed colleagues as the inaugural chair holders this September, Professor Matthew Spitzer (Chapman) and Professor Steven Calabresi (Barber). They will be formally installed this spring, alongside our new Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law, David Dana. In addition, the Children & Family Justice Center in the Bluhm Legal Clinic, was one of thirteen organizations to receive the prestigious 2013 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. This well-deserved honor recognized the Center’s decades of work to

improve the justice system for some of our most vulnerable citizens (see story page 16). Philanthropic support is at the core of our success by supporting scholarships, faculty, research, the legal clinic, public service initiatives and so much more. The extraordinary $10 million unrestricted gift from Lanny (JD ’73) and Sharon Martin is a perfect example of such philanthropy. I am truly grateful for the generosity of the Martins and of the dedication and engagement of our alumni and friends. It is your support that enables us to adapt to meet the needs and changing landscape of the legal market. Thanks to you, we were able to limit tuition increases for our students for the last two years and increase the amount of financial aid offered. This is a small window into the impact your gifts make, allowing us to stay competitive in the legal market. On behalf of the faculty and students of our great law school, thank you for your extraordinary support. I look forward to working with you to make the Northwestern Law School even greater. Sincerely yours,

Dan Rodriguez Dean and Harold Washington Professor

Marlene Nations JD ’82 A dedicated leader and volunteer A love and commitment to all things Northwestern runs deep for Marlene Nations. Marlene earned her Juris Doctor in 1982 from Northwestern Law and hit the ground running from that time on. Marlene is a partner in Dentons’ Real Estate practice and is widely recognized as one of Chicago’s most versatile practitioners. “Northwestern Law has been a big part of my life since my first days on campus” said Marlene. “The legal training I received at Northwestern, along with its close ties to the Chicago legal community, were instrumental in my being hired as a summer intern at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, now known as Dentons, where I have spent my entire legal career.” Beyond her success in the legal field, Marlene is a loyal alumna and volunteer for Northwestern University and the Law School and her commitment can be seen through all that she does. Marlene and her husband, Harold, a fellow member of the Class of ’82 and dedicated alumnus, have been generous donors to the Law School Fund since graduating. “We have donated to the Law School at the Wigmore level donor virtually every year since graduation as a way of saying “thank you” to the place that has done so much for me, and so that the Law School can continue to provide an outstanding legal education to a wide range of students” said Marlene. “ I am proud to wear purple – and those of you who see me know that I do – and hope that through my donations and participation in the alumni community, many others will be wearing the purple.” Recognizing the importance of philanthropy to the Law School, Marlene eagerly accepted her nomination to the Law School Fund Board in 2011. The Law School Fund Board helps determine the Law School’s fundraising strategies and messages, and also oversees fundraising-related initiatives like the Firm and Corporate Alumni Challenge and the John Henry Wigmore Club giving society. Marlene currently serves as Chair of the Law School Fund Board, working closely with board members, staff and fellow alumni to build much needed annual support. Marlene has also served on many reunion committees, Northwestern University’s Council of One Hundred, a women’s mentoring organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Northwestern’s undergraduate and graduate women students and young alumnae, and serves as a Firm Representative for the Law School. 8

Law School and Kellogg School of Management students traveled to Guaymate, Dominican Republic, in March 2013 as part of Northwestern’s Access to Health Project. Co-founded by Juliet Sorensen, clinical assistant professor of law in the Bluhm Legal Clinic’s Center for International Human Rights, the Access to Health Project is an interdisciplinary health and human rights project in which students and faculty from the CIHR and Northwestern Medicine’s Center for Global Health work with a community in the developing world to assess the public health needs of that community and design an appropriate, sustainable intervention.

A True Partnership The Children and Family Justice Center and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

The extraordinary accomplishments of the Children and Family Justice Center were recognized by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation last February, which awarded the Center a 2013 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions in the amount of $750,000. “This award recognizes the Center’s decades of work to improve the justice system for some of our most vulnerable citizens,” said Dean Daniel Rodriguez. “Center faculty, through their tireless representation and advocacy, have changed juvenile justice in Illinois. We celebrate this award because it honors the Center’s many accomplishments and will allow them to expand their efforts in the community.” For twenty years, the Center has fought for and stood with children in conflict with the law, with a focus on zealous individual advocacy and systemic policy reform. The Center seeks to protect the rights 16

of children and to change the ways in which the systems controlling the lives of these children too often ultimately fail them. This award is the culmination of a true partnership between the Children and Family Justice Center and the MacArthur Foundation. Through the hard work and many successes, the MacArthur Foundation has partnered with the CFJC throughout the last two decades. Beginning with a start-up grant to support the Children and Family Justice Center in 1992 and continuing to provide many critical project funding grants, the MacArthur Foundation has made a true commitment to juvenile justice reform through the work of the CFJC. One initiative, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, involved the creation of a statewide juvenile defender resource center and network to provide juvenile defense attorneys with opportunities for leadership, education, training, and mentoring. The Center is also

committed to informing and empowering youth and their families through its Know Your Rights publication and trainings. “On the one hand, we are teachers who are devoted to helping our students develop the skills they will need as lawyers,” said Center director Julie Biehl. “And on the other, we are advocates on the front lines of the Illinois juvenile justice system who work on cases where access to justice is compromised. This award will allow us to expand our advocacy on issues ranging from extreme sentencing of youth, fitness to stand trial, and the urgent need to assist incarcerated young people transition back into the community, while at the same time teaching and mentoring the next generation of lawyers and policy advocates.” The MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions was established in 1997 to help ensure the long-term sustainability of organizations the Foundation deemed to be particularly effective at providing new approaches to persistent problems. “From New York to New Delhi, these extraordinary organizations are making a real difference in the lives of people and communities,” said MacArthur President Robert Gallucci. “MacArthur recognizes their importance and impact, and we hope our investment will help ensure that they continue to thrive and to increase their reach in the future.” The grant is a recognition of past successes and is designed to be an investment in the Center’s future. The MacArthur Foundation does not seek or accept nominations for this award. To qualify, organizations must demonstrate exceptional creativity and effectiveness, have reached a critical or strategic point in their development, show strong leadership and stable financial management, have previously received MacArthur support, and engage in work central to one of MacArthur’s core programs. The Children and Family Justice Center was one of 13 organizations recognized by the Foundation in 2013 and only the second university-based organization to ever receive the award. The Center will use the award to establish an endowment and to expand the Center’s public information outreach initiatives.

GARY JD ’78 & RACHEL SUMERS A deep commitment to student aid

As Senior Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Advisors in New York, Gary Sumers is deeply entwined in the business world. Gary graduated from Northwestern Law in 1978 with his Juris Doctor, gaining important legal skills that he still uses to this day. It is this strong intersection between law and business that inspired Gary and his wife Rachel, to support our JD-MBA students. With their strong commitment to supporting the next generation of lawyers and business leaders, Gary and Rachel recently made a $500,000 gift to Northwestern Law, endowing a scholarship. The Gary and Rachel Sumers JD-MBA Scholarship will support students enrolled in the JD-MBA program at Northwestern. As we strive to

lower the debt burden our students face after graduation, philanthropic scholarship support like the Sumers Scholarship will make an immense impact. “Even though I am in business and only practiced law for a relatively short time, there is no doubt my legal background has been very helpful in my career” said Gary. “As a result, we thought making a gift that could benefit law students as well as business students made the most sense. In light of the cost of providing a first class law or business education, providing scholarship assistance to qualified students seemed like an easy choice.” Gary remains an engaged member of the alumni community, most recently returning to campus in September for All Alumni Weekend and his 35th Reunion. Gary, alongside former classmates and study group partners, Skip Herman, Judge Richard Tallman and Neil Eggleston, served on a panel, The Anatomy of a Study Group. The panel was a true example of the collaborative student experience the Law School has provided for decades, fostering an innovative learning environment and lifelong friendships. Gary has also served as an alumni admissions interviewer and is a former member of the Law Board. Before joining Blackstone, Gary Sumers was Chief Operating Officer of General Growth Properties and spent 11 years at JMB Institutional Realty Corporation, where he was the Managing Director in charge of asset management. He began his career practicing real estate law in Chicago. Rachel Sumers also began her career in law, practicing as a tax associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York, before working at Goldman Sachs as internal tax counsel. Rachel received both her Juris Doctor and LLM in taxation from New York University. She is involved in a number of charities and volunteer organizations.

Jay A. Pritzker Fellowship Program Established The Jay Pritzker Foundation has given one million dollars to establish the Jay A. Pritzker Fellowship Program at Northwestern Law, a program that supports post-graduate public interest work in underserved communities. Each year a significant percentage of Northwestern students aspire to practice in the public interest law sector, where there is a troubling mismatch between demand for services and supply of talent. While there is a tremendous need for legal services in the public interest sector, there is a shortage of opportunity because of the lack of adequate financing. For the past few years, nonprofits and governments have faced steadily shrinking budgets and have been trimming staffing levels accordingly. Highly qualified Northwestern Law graduates thus have difficulty securing positions in public interest law. To address this issue, the Jay Pritzker Foundation has made a $1 million gift to Northwestern University School of Law to establish the Jay A. Pritzker Fellowship Program. Dan Pritzker (JD ’86) and Karen Pritzker are trustees of the Jay Pritzker Foundation. Named after Dan Pritzker’s father, who graduated from the School of Law in 1947, the program will provide post-graduate public interest fellowships. Several fellows will be selected annually over a three-year period, with preference given to talented students who demonstrate financial need. “We need to do all we can to expand opportunities in this area,” said Dan Pritzker. “We made this gift to honor the memory of my father,

a dedicated philanthropist. We hope to inspire others to contribute as well, so that the Law School can expand these types of public interest initiatives.” The Jay Pritzker Foundation gift is designed to encourage collaboration: it is a challenge gift, in which donors who make a gift of $25,000 in support of post-graduate public interest fellowships will have their gift matched one to one. The Law School is actively seeking match gifts to expand the reach and scope of this program. “So many of our students see the impact that public interest law can have on the well-being of their communities and society,” said Dean Dan Rodriguez. “The Jay Pritzker Foundation’s generous gift to establish this program enables our graduates to immediately begin serving their communities, regardless of financial constraints.” The Jay A. Pritzker Fellowship Program expands and enhances the Northwestern Law Public Interest Fellowships program, created earlier this year to support members of the Class of 2013 who are committed to practicing public interest law. Recipients were chosen based upon projects they designed to provide legal services or advocacy to underrepresented clients at a domestic nonprofit agency. Expanding the Public Interest Fellowships program, as this gift makes possible, will increase access to justice in the community while at the same time offering more Northwestern Law students opportunities to launch careers in the public sector. 27

Julie Lee JD ’13 From student leader to committed young alumna As a recent graduate, Julie Lee puts her legal education to work daily as a first year M&A associate in the New York office of Simpson Thacher & Barlett LLP. Julie is one of more than 400 graduates from the 2013 class to join the esteemed alumni community of Northwestern Law. While at Northwestern, Julie excelled both in and out of the classroom, maintaining a challenging course load while gaining critical hands-on experience working with the Children & Family Justice Center and serving as a student leader. Not only did Julie leave Northwestern Law with the skills to succeed as an attorney, she gained a network of lifetime friends. It’s these relationships with her peers that encouraged her to serve on the Student Bar Association, as well as to co-chair the Class of 2013 Graduating Class Committee. Thanks to the strong leadership of Julie and her co-chair Sam Scarcello, the Class of 2013 exceeded their goal with a record breaking 57% of the class making a gift to the Law School Fund and secured an additional $10,000 challenge gift from Dean Dan Rodriguez and Leslie Oster. A Young Wigmore and proud alumna, Julie’s commitment to Northwestern Law couldn’t be stronger. “I view giving back to Northwestern Law as a small investment with large returns,” said Julie. “I want to see our clinics continue to impact the community, remain connected as an alumna, and ensure future generations of students also benefit from, you know – the Northwestern Difference.”

The Henry and Emma Rogers Society honors and recognizes alumni and friends who have included Northwestern University in their estate plans. Whether it is through a charitable bequest, gift annuity, insurance policy, or other planned gift, members of the Rogers Society have created a lasting legacy of support for students, faculty, research, and programs. Planned gifts create tremendous opportunities for the University and allow Northwestern to transform the lives of future generations.

Olav Eiesland

Northwestern University established the Rogers Society in 1987 in honor and memory of Henry and Emma Rogers. President of Northwestern University from 1890–1900, Henry Wade Rogers was a visionary leader who was instrumental in transforming Northwestern from a small cluster of colleges into a major, nationally recognized university. His wife, Emma Winner Rogers, founded the Northwestern University Settlement Association and was a leader in the suffrage movement. Like Henry and Emma Rogers, our planned giving donors possess a vision for the University’s greatness and have chosen to invest in its future.

Albert Hirsch JD ’50

We are pleased to honor and recognize the following alumni and friends of the University as members of the Henry and Emma Rogers Society. These individuals have named Northwestern University School of Law as a beneficiary of a planned gift, for which we are grateful.
