About the Chamber

OUR HISTORY Created by local GLBT business and community leaders representing organizational, racial, gender, and sexual orientation diversity, the North Texas GLBT Chamber held its inaugural dinner meeting in March 2005. Building on the accomplishments of the steering committee, the Board and its member volunteers launched the Connections Mixers, Business, the Chamber’s newsletter, and our first website. American Airlines became the Chamber’s first Corporate Member. Several Corporate Members were recruited in 2006 and the Chamber launched the Business Exchange Network referral program. Recognizing the important economic impact of GLBT travelers, in 2006 the Chamber formally partnered with the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau in an effort to sell Dallas as a travel and relocation destination. By 2007 the Chamber had hit its stride. In March the Chamber celebrated its 2nd anniversary and gave its first Business Excellence Awards. A new website was introduced, Business went digital, and the Business Exchange Network was re-tooled and re-launched. In May the Board of Directors’ took the bold step of hiring the Chamber’s first President. 2008 has just begun but already the Chamber has accomplished great things: the re-launch of the website with more content and advertising, the networking mixers held in Tarrant and Denton counties, and the publication of the 2008 Community Resource & Visitors Guide.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Frazier Photography & Video

Welcome to the 2008 “premier” edition of the North Texas GLBT Chamber’s Community Resource & Visitor Guide! With more than 250 members, the list of products and services that our members provide is nearly endless. I urge you to patronize Chamber member businesses for two reasons: because members of the North Texas GLBT Chamber are businesses you can trust to treat you with the respect and dignity that you deserve and secondly, because Chamber members continually contribute their time and services to create an organization that enhances not only the GLBT business community but our community as a whole. We are focused on providing programs, events and opportunities that enhance and strengthen our member businesses, our community, and the area’s economy. Programs like the Connections Mixers, Power Networking, Business Exchange Network and the upcoming “It’s About Life Expo” work to create new business for our members. We are focused on building a solid organization that will serve its members and our community for many years to come. We are dedicated to making certain that the Chamber continues to be professionally managed and financially sound with clear processes and unimpeachable ethics. We are focused on promoting the strength, diversity and economic vitality of the GLBT business community by keeping our members informed on issues that affect how we do business. Our partnerships with local governments, other area chambers of commerce, and the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau underscore the important role that the Chamber and the GLBT community play in supporting our local economy. We are focused on providing to our members and our community quality services and products like our newly re-designed website, the GLBT Job Expo and GLBT Jobs online job posting program, and this Guide. If you are already a Chamber member, thank you. Your support makes everything that we do possible. If you’re not a Chamber member we invite you to join us. In three years we’ve accomplished a great deal. With your membership and support we can do so much more. And remember, when you’re looking for goods and services in North Texas, be sure to reach for the Chamber Guide first. Best wishes,

Sherry Briggs Chairman of the Board

President’s Message

Lisa Means, LM Photography

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE You think you’re pretty smart. I think you are. How do I know? Well, you must be smart because you’ve picked up a copy of the 2008 Community Resource & Visitor Guide.

By selecting a business or service provider in this directory, you are making a wise consumer decision. The businesses in this directory are not just marketing to you; they are all members of the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce. They are known for their integrity, outstanding quality of their services or products, and for having a commitment to giving back to community through their volunteerism and philanthropy. In addition, when you do business with a Chamber Member, you make an investment in the economic well being and financial independence of our community. How empowering in this time of huge multi-national companies to know when you spend your hard earned dollars at a local Chamber Member business, whether small or one of our corporate members, part of the money you spend is reinvested in your own community. It will be reinvested because the business owner, service provider and employee lives, works, shops and does business in many of the same places as you. The buying power of your dollar grows as that same dollar is circulated throughout our community. Quality, integrity, service, investment - and all you did was pick up a copy of a directory and make a decision to contact one of our fine business members. You can make the Chamber even more powerful. If you know of a great business, perhaps even your own, that supports our community, cares about diversity and wants to increase revenue, we’ll happily invite them to join us. Whether a business owner, employee, or professional service provider, the Chamber welcomes you. We welcome your involvement and we invite you to benefit from doing business with our members. If you wish to become part of our community of outstanding, successful, professional leaders, go online to GLBTChamber.org and check us out or give me a call at (214) 821-GLBT (4528) to find out how to get involved. Best wishes,

Tony Vedda President

When the Chamber made it known that it planned to develop the areas’ only interactive job posting program, Texas Instruments answered the call – dedicating personnel and resources to the project. TI programmers worked closely with the Chamber and its current web programmer to develop code that could seamlessly interact with the Chamber’s website and database. For more than 25 years the Crossroads, located at Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton, has been the epicenter of Dallas’ GLBT community. Part of the Oak Lawn neighborhood, the Crossroads is filled with a variety of restaurants, cafés, unique clothing and specialty stores, and a blend of GLBT bars and night clubs. Another popular neighborhood is the Bishop Arts District where arts and dining seamlessly blend, creating a charming and upcoming area. Here you will find an array of art galleries, restaurants and shops situated along one city block. What gives Dallas a real sense of pride are the nonprofit service organizations that strive to educate and offer assistance in the community. From GLBT youth groups to health awareness and support, many proud residents of Dallas work tirelessly to support our GLBT community.

COMMUNITY EVENTS Each September, Dallas celebrates gay pride with events that showcase various elements of our local GLBT community. The pinnacle of Dallas pride is the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, which journeys down Cedar Springs Road with floats in all shades of gay. Dallas Southern Pride includes parties, fellowship, workshops and seminars that build awareness of GLBT pride in Dallas’ community of color. The Oak Lawn Halloween Street Party is one of the most-attended annual events in Dallas. Celebrated along the Cedar Springs strip, a portion of the street is cordoned off, enabling thousands of costumed attendees to mingle among the crowd. For more than 20 years, Easter in the Park has been a day-long event that includes a free concert by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; festival food and a Pooch Parade of costumed dogs. As a tradition, event veterans design outlandish bonnets to wear the day of the event. Don’t forget your blanket and picnic basket. To view the best in new and independent films, Out Takes Dallas and Q Cinema (Fort Worth) present two highly successful GLBT film festivals. Each festival attracts a diverse audience with a common interest in film, fun and community support. GayBingo, a monthly event that benefits the Resource Center of Dallas, is popular in the community. This drag queen-hosted event features live performances. It’s just like your grandmother’s bingo, but with a little twist.

Back in Oak Lawn, there are several restaurants that share the spotlight in their own right. The original Black-Eyed Pea features a menu of home-style country entrees that include catfish and a Texas-sized chicken fried steak dinner. Just down the block you’ll find Café Brazil, a popular late night dining destination on the Cedar Springs strip that is open 24 hours a day - we recommend you try the steak quesadillas! If old-fashioned hamburgers are something you crave, nobody serves them better than Hunky’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers. Hunky’s offers indoor and patio seating right in the heart of the bustling crossroads. If pizza is more to your liking, zip across the street to Zini’s Pizzeria – a popular place to grab a slice after a night out on the town. For down-home meals, check out Lucky’s Café. A popular staple in the GLBT community, Lucky’s has friendly staff and a casual atmosphere that makes for a great meeting place for lunch or dinner. For a little Asian cuisine, Sushi Sapporo Japanese Restaurant has a delectable selection of sushi and other traditional Japanese fare. Thai Nipa is another tasty option that attracts a lot of regulars with its good food and friendly service. After a long night out dancing, many locals stop by Panda’s to rest their feet and enjoy a Po-Po Platter.

With three dining rooms, each with their own atmosphere, Abacus is an upscale restaurant that is very accommodating to your mood and taste buds. Speaking of top chefs and upscale dining—if you wish to lavish in a luxurious meal, make sure to visit Fearing’s, located at The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas. With seven stunning eating environments and a bold selection of American meals on the menu, Fearing’s provides a unique blend of environment and cuisine that prompted Esquire magazine to name Fearing’s as the 2007 “Restaurant of the Year”. Travel downtown and you will find internationally acclaimed chef Stephan Pyles in his namesake restaurant across from the Dallas Museum of Art. Awarded Chef of the Year by Esquire magazine in 2006, Stephan Pyles has been described by The New York Times as being “an absolute genius in the kitchen.” Stephan Pyles features southwestern fare at its finest. Monica’s Aca y Alla, in the artsy Deep Ellum neighborhood, is Monica Greene’s flagship restaurant featuring popular Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. Greene is one of Dallas’ most famous restaurateurs. Great food isn’t the only thing that draws people to Monica’s. Be sure to check out live music on the weekends and the “Best Margarita in Town” as described by the Dallas Observer. As tradition, the locals frequent Monica’s on Wednesdays, where drink specials accompany the famous Tex-Mex fare. A visit to Texas just wouldn’t be complete without sinking your teeth into a mouth-watering steak. For the finest selection of beef, take an elevator ride down below street level in Downtown to Dakota’s. A fine wine is recommended by a superior wait staff for each selection on the menu.
