VatICan CItY (CnS) -- Parents are charged with guarding the faith given to their children at baptism and helping them become true witnesses by example rather than just rules, Pope Francis said. By asking the church for faith for their children through the sacrament of baptism, Christian parents have the task of helping their children to grow so that they "may be witnesses for all of us: also for us priests, bishops, everyone," the pope said during a Mass in the Sistine Chapel. During the Mass Jan. 8, the

feast of the baptism of the Lord, Pope Francis baptized 28 infants -- 15 boys and 13 girls. "Faith is not reciting the 'Creed' on Sunday when we go to Mass: It is not only this," the pope said. "Faith is believing that which is the truth: God the father who has sent his son and the Spirit which gives us life." The pope's brief homily centered on the meaning of faith, which he described as a lifelong journey that "is lived" and leads to becoming a witness of Christ. Parents, he continued, must

also teach through their example that faith "means trusting in God." While the pope spoke, the faint cries of a child echoed throughout the Sistine Chapel, causing a chain reaction of crying infants. "The concert has begun!" the pope said jokingly. "It is because the children are in a place they do not know; they woke up earlier than

usual. One begins with one note and then the others mimic. Some cry simply because another one cried." Acknowledging that some babies might be crying because they are hungry, the pope urged the mothers to not be ashamed to breast-feed their children in the chapel. "Mothers, nurse them without

fear, with all normality, like Our Lady nursed Jesus," he told them. Later, before praying the Angelus with those gathered in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis said the feast of the Lord's baptism helps "us to the rediscover the beauty of being a baptized people." The baptized, he said, are "sincontinued on page 4

Success, well-being at any cost will deceive, disappoint, pope says VatICan CItY (CnS) -- Watch out for the tempting promises and easy rewards of false gods and idols because they always lead to confusion, disappointment and even death, Pope Francis said. "We are tempted to seek even fleeting comfort, which seems to fill the emptiness of solitude and ease the exertion of believing" in God, especially in times of trouble, he said Jan. 11 during his weekly general audience. But the hope and security that come from God "never ever disappoint," he said. "Idols always let you down" since they are figments of the imagination and not "alive and real" like God. The pope continued his series of talks on Christian hope by reflecting on Psalm 115, which warns of the false hopes and securities offered by man-made idols. While the psalmist speaks of statues made of "silver and gold," the pope said idols also include anything people hold up as the ultimate answer to their happiness

and security like money, power, success and false ideologies -- all of which carry "illusions of eternity and omnipotence." Even things like physical beauty and health become idols when a person is willing "to sacrifice everything" in order to obtain or maintain them, he said. "They are all things that confuse the heart and mind and instead of promoting life, they lead to death," he said. As an example of this, he said he once heard a woman speak very nonchalantly about procuring an abortion because the pregnancy would have ruined her figure. "These are idols and they take you down the wrong path. They do not give you happiness," he said. The pope marveled at the huge number of fortunetellers he used to see sitting in a city park in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the lines of people waiting their turn to consult them. The shtick "is always the

same, 'There is a woman in your life,' 'Something dark is coming,'" he said ominously. But the people would pay to hear such things, and this was supposed to make them feel better even though they were putting their trust in a bunch of nonsense, he said. "We buy false hope," which shows how much people cling to it, he said. True hope, the kind Jesus brought freely by "giving his life for us, that kind we don't trust in so much sometimes." Faith in God takes strength and perseverance, and when bad things happen in life, he said, sometimes that faith wavers and people feel they need a different kind of certainty, something easier or more "tangible and concrete." "Sometimes we seek a god that can bend to our wishes and magically intervene to change reality and make it be the way

we want," he said. This is what people love and seek -- a god "that looks like us, understandable, predictable," even though "it can do nothing -- impotent and deceitful." The psalmist says that those who worship or trust in things that cannot speak, see, feel, move or hear, will become like them with nothing to say, "incapable of helping, changing things, smiling, giving oneself and incapable of loving." "Even we, people of the church, run this risk" of becoming worldly, he said. "We need to be in the world, but defend ourselves from the illusions" and idols of the world. But those who persevere and courageously trust and hope in the Lord, they become more and more like him, sharing in his life and blessings, "transforming us continued on page 5

Pope: Jesus amazed because he was humble, helpful, not a hypocrite VatICan CItY (CnS) -- Jesus astonished people with the way he taught and interacted with others because he wasn't aloof, domineering or hypocritical, Pope Francis said in a homily. "Jesus wasn't allergic to people. Touching lepers, the sick did not disgust him," whereas the Pharisees -- who strolled around in fine clothes -- looked down on the people and considered them ignorant, he said at the Mass Jan. 10 in the chapel of his residence. "They were removed from the people, they weren't close," the pope said of the Pharisees. "Jesus was very close to the people and this gave him authority." The pope's homily centered on the day's Gospel reading (Mk 1:21-28) in which people gathered at the synagogue in Capernaum "were astonished" at Jesus' teaching because he displayed an authority that differed so greatly from that of the scribes. The people would listen to and be respectful toward the doctors of the law and the scribes, but the people didn't take what they said "to heart," he said. These teachers felt them-

selves superior, as if to say: "We are the teachers, the princes and we teach you. No service. We command, you obey," the pope said. But Jesus "never passed himself off as a prince. He was always the servant of everyone and this is what gave him authority." The traditional teachers were hypocrites, declaring the truth, but not doing what they preached, Pope Francis said. Jesus "lived what he preached," he said, representing the harmonious union of "what he thought, felt and did." "Jesus, who is humble, who is at the service (of others), who is near, who doesn't despise people and who is consistent, has authority," the pope said. "This is the authority that the people of God sense."

Magi's journey reflects people's longing for god, pope says on epiphany VatICan CItY (CnS) -- The Magi had the courage to set out on a journey in the hope of finding something new, unlike Herod who was full of himself and unwilling to change his ways, Pope Francis said. The Wise Men who set out from the East in search of Jesus personify all those who long for God and reflect "all those who in their lives have let their hearts be anesthetized," the pope said Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany. "The Magi experienced longing; they were tired of the usual fare. They were all too familiar with, and weary of, the Herods of their own day. But there, in Bethlehem, was a promise of newness, of gratuity," he said. Thousands of people were gathered in St. Peter's Basilica as the pope entered to the sounds of the choir singing "Angels we have heard on high" in Latin. Before taking his place in front of the altar, the pope stood in front of a statue of baby Jesus, spending several minutes in veneration before kissing it. The pope said that the Magi adoring the newborn king highlight two specific actions: seeing and worshipping. Seeing the star of Bethlehem did not prompt them to embark on their journey but rather, "they saw the star because they had already set out," he said. "Their hearts were open to the horizon and they could see what the heavens were showing them, for they were guided by an inner restlessness. They were open to something new," the pope said. This restlessness, he continued, awakens a longing for God that exists in the hearts of all believers who know "that the Gospel is not an event of the past but of

the present." It is holy longing for God "that helps us keep alert in the face of every attempt to reduce and impoverish our life. A holy longing for God is the memory of faith, which rebels before all prophets of doom," the pope said. Recalling the biblical figures of Simeon, the prodigal son, and Mary Magdalene, the pope said this longing for God "draws us out of our iron-clad isolation, which makes us think that nothing can change," and helps us seek Christ. However, the figure of King Herod presents a different attitude of bewilderment and fear that, when confronted with something new, "closes in on itself and its own achievements, its knowledge, its successes." The quest of the Magi led them first to Herod's palace that, although it befits the birth of king, is only a sign of "power, outward appearances and superiority. Idols that promise only sorrow and enslavement," he said. "There, in the palace, they did not see the star guiding them to discover a God who wants to be loved. For only under the banner of freedom, not tyranny, is it possible to realize that the gaze of this unknown but desired king does not abase, enslave, or imprison us," the pope said. Unlike the Magi, the pope added, Herod is unable to worship the newborn king because he was unwilling to change his way of thinking and "did not want to stop worshiping himself, believing that everything revolved around him." Christians are called to imitate the wise men who, "weary of the Herods of their own day," set out in search of the promise of something new. "The Magi were able to wor-

ship, because they had the courage to set out. And as they fell to their knees before the small, poor and vulnerable infant, the unexpected and unknown child of Bethlehem, they discovered the glory of God," the pope said. After the Mass, Pope Francis greeted tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square to celebrate the feast of

the Epiphany. A colorful parade led by the sounds of trumpets and drums, people dressed in traditional and festive clothing contributed to the cheerful atmosphere despite the chilly weather. Explaining the significance of the Wise Men who presented their gifts to Christ after adoring him, the pope gave the crowds a gift: a small

booklet of reflections on mercy. The book, entitled "Icons of Mercy," presents "six Gospel episodes that recall the experience of people transformed by Jesus' love: the sinful woman, Zacchaeus, Matthew, the publican, the Samaritan, the good thief and the apostle Peter. Six icons of mercy," the papal almoner's office said.

ners saved by the grace of Christ, truly inserted by the power of the Holy Spirit in the filial relationship of Jesus with the father and welcomed into the womb of mother church" where Christians are ca-

pable of being brothers and sisters with everyone. Noting John the Baptist's feelings of unworthiness in baptizing Jesus, Pope Francis said John was aware "of the great distance between him and Jesus." However, Jesus came into the world to bridge the gap between God and man and "to reunite that which

was divided," he said. After his baptism, Jesus begins his mission of salvation, which is characterized "by the style of a humble and meek servant, armed only with the strength of truth," he said. All Christians, the pope added, are called to follow Jesus' style of proclaiming the Gospel without "shouting or scolding someone." "True mission is never proselytism but rather attraction to Christ. But how? How is attraction to Christ done? With one's own witness that comes from a strong union with him through prayer, adoration and concrete charity, which is service to Jesus present in the least of our brothers," he said. After reciting the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis prayed for the parents and for the children he baptized, as well as for a "young catechumen" he baptized Jan. 7 in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he lives. The Vatican provided no further details about the young person. "I invoke the Holy Spirit upon them and their children so that this sacrament, which is so simple yet at the same time so important, may be lived with faith and joy," the pope said.

Pastoral Planning (Part 5) (Editor’s note: This is the continuation of the series on Pastoral Planning) The next phase in the planning process is to identify the problems which the planning process needs to address. The “problems” are simply the gap between the reality that people experience on a day to day basis and the ideal that is yearned for in the vision of what the community might become. There are two broad approaches that should be taken in this phase of planning. One approach is to identify the felt needs of the community members. Where is the lived experience of the community falling short of the vision that the community has identified? The second approach is a more objective in that it analyzes the trends that the data has revealed and applies them to the realization of the vision of the parish community. The objective approach is not better than the subjective, just different; but both perspectives are necessary. Identifying the felt needs of the community members can be done through “focus groups”. This is jargon for getting a group of people together for a conversation. It is usually best if you have a crosssection of the parish community involved in the conversation. An easy way to do this is ask that at one meeting each of the parish groups and committees that regularly meet spend some time discussing the parish vision and in what ways the parish realizes that vision and in which ways it falls short of realizing that vision. Both the positive and negatives should be considered, as it is important to acknowledge your strengths and achievements, as well as where there is still significant room for improvement. Be sure that someone in each group is responsible for recording the conclusions of the group and passing them on to the pastor, yourself or whoever is responsible for collecting this information.

Success ... continued from page 2

into his children." "In this God, we have hope. This is the God that is not an idol, that never disappoints," and always remembers his people even during their most difficult trials, he said. At the end of the audience in the Vatican's Paul VI audience hall, the pope told people to make sure they never pay for a ticket to see the pope because entry to papal events is always free since "this is a home for everyone." "I found out that there are pretty crafty (people) who charge for tickets," which should have written on them in different languages that they are completely free of charge. "Whoever makes you pay to get you into an audience commits a crime," he said. Tickets for papal Masses also always are free. No tickets are needed for the noon Angelus prayer.

Page - 5 Obviously the results are going to be subjective but subjective data is fine. Humans have a pretty good grasp of when all is well and when there are problems that need attending to. The average person may not be able to attach any particular objective criteria to justify his or her perception of a problem but their subjective feel of the situation usually does a good job of weighing many of the factors at play and sensing the need for improvement. Sometimes it helps to do a simple survey of the parishioners. A short questionnaire can be prepared and placed in the pews one weekend. Before Mass the parishioners can be asked to respond to the questionnaire and deposit it in the collection basket during the Offertory. This is particularly helpful after the focus groups have submitted reports and there is a list of perceived problems that have been identified. The survey can prioritize the identified issues and provide an opportunity to name problems that the focus groups have missed. It doesn’t need to be long or involved. It can be quite short and only have a couple of questions. It is also an opportunity to engage a larger portion of the parish community in the planning process. If any effective response is to be made to the identified needs in the parish, it is necessary to quantify those needs in some objective manner. This is where the data mentioned earlier comes in handy. How big of a problem is it? How many people are impacted? What resources are available? What can be done to remedy the situation? What options are available? What has been tried before? Among the problems to be addressed should be the broad Diocesan issues identified in the Diocesan Pastoral Plan. The parish is part of the Diocese and should contribute to the success of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan. This should be reflected in the parish pastoral plan. The parish pastoral plan brings these broad issues down to a practical level in that parish. Their approach to addressing these problems may be different from their neighboring parish, which is fine if it reflects their particular context. The parish may be directly affected by some of the actions taken by the Diocese in addressing identified problems, such as the declining number of priests and demographic shifts in parishes resulting in the consolidation of parishes. If the parish is to be consolidated in some way with other parishes, there needs to be serious planning for that consolidation and that needs to be worked into the parish pastoral plan. It is also important to address the more general problems identified in the Diocesan Pastoral Plan at the parish level. If the declining number of priests in the Diocese is identified as a serious problem in the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, how is the parish going to help address that problem? Having generated a list of fairly detailed and documented challenges to realizing the parish vision, someone must sit down and organize these issues into a list of problems that can be prioritized and addressed. The parish pastoral council is probably the best group to take on this task

Pope: Vocations require prayers, open doors, big hearts, busy hands VatICan CItY (CnS) -- While God is the one calling people to a vocation, clergy and religious have to cooperate by being inspirational role models, keeping their doors open and giving restless young people constructive things to do, Pope Francis said. Praying for vocations and holding meetings to discuss effective strategies are key, he said, but if those things are done "without making sure that the doors are open, it's useless." The pope made his remarks near the end of a Jan. 3-5 conference on pastoral ministry for vocations, sponsored by the Italian bishops' conference national office for vocations. Setting aside his prepared text,

the pope told his audience it was too early in the day to make them fall back asleep again by reading aloud something they could read later. Instead he wanted to talk to them about the conference theme of the divine command -- "Get up!" The pope recalled how Peter heard this call while he was sleeping, chained in prison awaiting trial. An angel told him, "Get up quickly" and "Put on your cloak and follow me." The angel freed him and led him safely to an alley, but then left him there alone, a bit confused at first, but then excited and eager to find his friends. Unfortunately, the pope said, when Peter got to the home where his friends were praying fervently for him, the door was shut and the

servant didn't think to open it right away when she heard him calling. How often does this happen today, the pope wondered, with so many people praying for vocations and for the Lord to tell people to rise up and be free, but then when those people go out to seek what they are looking for, they find a closed door. This happens when a priest has very limited or inconvenient hours

for receiving the public or for hearing confessions or when the parish has a very unfriendly secretary who "scares the people away. The door is open, but the secretaries show their teeth" like a snarl. "To have vocations, being welcoming is necessary. It's in a home that you welcome" people, he said. The pope said he knows how tiring, frustrating or difficult it can be to do outreach with today's

young people. He said when he was young, he and his friends were happy to go to parish-organized meetings where they just sat around and talked about a particular topic, then went out after to watch a game at the stadium or do some charity work. "We were easygoing" and didn't need so much activity like young people today crave. continued on page 9

Pope to diplomats: Break bad habits of war, injustice VatICan CItY (CnS) -- At the start of a new year, Pope Francis laid out a laundry list of suggested resolutions for religious and political leaders for making a joint commitment toward building peace. No conflict exists that is "a habit impossible to break," the pope said, but he underlined that kicking such a habit requires greater efforts to rectify social injustice, protect religious freedom, jump-start peace talks, end the arms trade and cooperate in responding to climate change and the immigration and refugee crises. In a 45-minute speech Jan. 9 to diplomats accredited to the Vatican, the pope underlined what he saw as the real "enemies of peace" and the best responses that could be made by today's religious and political leaders. "One enemy of peace," he said, is seeing the human person as a means to an end, which "opens the way to the spread of injustice, social inequality and corruption." The waste, "greedy exploita-

tion" and inequitable distribution of the world's resources provoke conflict, he said, and human trafficking, especially the abuse and exploitation of children, cannot be overlooked. Another enemy of peace, the pope said, are ideologies that exploit "social unrest in order to foment contempt and hate" and target others as enemies to be eliminated. "Under the guise of promising great benefits, (such ideologies) instead leave a trail of poverty, division, social tensions, suffering and, not infrequently, death," he said. What peace requires, he said, is "a vision of human beings capable of promoting an integral development respectful of their transcendent dignity" as well as the courage and commitment to seek to build peace together every day. Religions are "called to promote peace," he said, appealing to "all religious authorities to join in reaffirming unequivocally that one can never kill in God's name." VatICan CItY (CnS) -- Mother's Day came early this year at the Vatican. A number of feast days over the Advent and Christmas seasons gave Pope Francis a fresh opportunity to pay homage to the world's mothers and insist further on how and why he wants the entire church to become more maternal. But who is this archetypal mother figure the pope upholds? Pope Francis pointed to a few of his favorite biblical heroines, praising the seemingly contradictory qualities of each: Like Mary, she is silently compliant to God's will; like Rachel, she weeps inconsolably, drawing God's and the world's attention to a reality people would rather ignore; and like the persistent widow, she doesn't let being a nobody stop her from speaking up against injustice, making a fuss and pestering the one who does have power to make things right. So how and why does the church need to be this loving, humble, hard-as-nails champion? Let's count the ways: -- A cold, careless, selfish world thirsts for a tender warm home. Speaking on the feast of Mary, Mother of God, Jan. 1, Pope Fran-

North Star

cis said it's the maternal instinct to hold, hope and help that make up the "strongest antidote" to the selfishness, indifference and intolerance in the world today. He went on to say that God chose to be "knit" inside and born of a woman, so that he could experience a mother's tenderness, hear the cries of and joys of their people, and make everyone his brother and sister in the faith who belong to a family. -- When times get tough, who are you going to call? Everyone, especially the lost, forgotten and marginalized, need a strong-willed, faithful advocate on their side. The pope said Jan. 1 that in his pastoral ministry, he learned so much about the meaning of true unconditional commitment from the mothers he met whose kids were in jail, addicted to drugs or victims of war. Neither cold nor heat nor rain, he said, could stop these women from fighting for something better. Much like the persistent widow, the mothers he met were the ones who were able to offer love and support to their suffering children "without wavering" through thick and thin. Mary shows that humility and tenderness aren't virtues of the weak, he said, but of the strong, and

that we don't have to mistreat others in order to feel important and make a difference. -- To change the world, it starts at home. Speaking on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dec. 12, he again highlighted "those fighting mothers" he knew back in Latin America. Often alone and with no help, they were able to raise their children right, he said. Mary is our "female fighter" facing off a mistrustful, lazy, distracted world -- "a woman who fights to strengthen the joy of the Gospel, give flesh to the Gospel" in the world. -- To help people, you must be in touch with a hard reality. In a letter to the world's bishops marking the feast of the Holy

Page - 7

Innocents Dec. 28, the pope said they must listen for the sobbing of today's mothers because there are so many new Herods today, killing the young with their tyranny and "unbridled thirst for power." Listen to where the cries are coming from, he said; they are not to be ignored or silenced. It's going to take courage to first acknowledge this difficult reality and work to ensure "the bare minimum needed so that their dignity as God's children will not only be respected but, above all, defended." -- Sometimes the best answer is no answer. Pope Francis again advocated the importance of using the heart over the head, and the church's need to be more sensi-

tive to another's pain in order to bring God's hope and compassion. During his general audience Jan. 4, he talked about Rachel's tears being seeds of hope and the futility of trite or insensitive speeches. Rachel's refusal to be consoled shows how delicately one must approach a person in pain, the pope said. When people are hurting, "it is necessary to share in their desperation. In order to dry the tears from the face of those who suffer, we must join our weeping with theirs. This is the only way our words may truly be able to offer a bit of hope," he said. Often it's only tears that can open one's eyes to the realities of life that need attention, he said.

Pope asks for warm hearts to help homeless deal with the cold VatICan CItY (CnS) -- Looking out over St. Peter's Square where icicles hung from usually bubbling fountains, Pope Francis prayed for the homeless. The freeze in Rome, subzero temperatures in large parts of Europe and heavy snowfalls in many areas in early January forced the closure of roads and schools and were blamed for at least a dozen deaths. "In these very cold days, I think and I invite you to think of the people who live on the streets, struck by the cold and, many times, by indifference," Pope Francis told people in St. Peter's Square Jan. 8. "Unfortunately, some have not survived," the pope told people who had bundled up against the midday chill to recite the Angelus prayer with him. "Let us pray for them and ask the Lord to warm our hearts so that we can help them." Because of the cold weather, the papal charities office instituted a 24-hour open-door policy at the shelters it runs with the Missionaries of Charity for homeless men and homeless women. Usually the shelters open in the evening and close in the morning. Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner and point man for Pope Francis' aid to the

homeless around the Vatican, was unavailable for comment Jan. 9. However, Italian media reported that he left a van and another automobile from his office unlocked and parked outside the Vatican over the weekend so the homeless could take turns using it for shelter.

VatICan CItY (CnS) -- The Catholic Church is "very far" from a situation in which the pope is in need of "fraternal correction" because he has not put the faith and church teaching in danger, said Cardinal Gerhard Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Interviewed Jan. 9 on the Italian all-news channel, TGCom24, Cardinal Muller said Pope Francis' document on the family, "Amoris Laetitia," was "very clear" in its teaching. In the document, the cardinal said, Pope Francis asks priests "to discern the situation of these persons living in an irregular union -- that is, not in accordance with the

doctrine of the church on marriage -- and asks for help for these people to find a path for a new integration into the church according to the condition of the sacraments (and) the Christian message on matrimony." In the papal document, he said, "I do not see any opposition: On one side we have the clear doctrine on matrimony, and on the other the obligation of the church to care for these people in difficulty." The cardinal was interviewed about a formal request to Pope Francis for clarification about "Amoris Laetitia" and particularly its call for the pastoral accompaniment of people who are divorced

and civilly remarried or who are living together without marriage. The request, called a "dubia," was written in September by U.S. Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, patron of the Knights of Malta, and three other cardinals. They published the letter in November after Pope Francis did not respond. In an interview later, Cardinal Burke said the pope must respond to the "dubia" because they directly impact the faith and the teaching of the church. If there is no response, he said, a formal "correction of the pope" would be in order. Cardinal Muller told the Italian television that "a possible fraternal correction of the pope seems very remote at this time because it does

not concern a danger for the faith," which is the situation St. Thomas Aquinas described for fraternal correction. "It harms the church" for cardinals to so publicly challenge the pope, he said. In his letter on the family, Pope Francis affirmed church teaching on the indissolubility of marriage, but he also urged pastors to provide spiritual guidance and assistance with discernment to Catholics who have married civilly without an annulment of their church marriage. A process of discernment, he has said, might eventually lead to a determination that access to the sacraments is possible. The possibility reflects a change in church teaching on the

indissolubility of marriage and the sinfulness of sexual relations outside a valid marriage, in the view of the document written by Cardinals Burke; Walter Brandmuller, a German and former president of the Pontifical Commission for Historical Sciences; Carlo Caffarra, retired archbishop of Bologna, Italy; and Joachim Meisner, retired archbishop of Cologne, Germany. In the TGCom24 interview, Cardinal Muller said, "everyone, especially cardinals of the Roman church, have the right to write a letter to the pope. However, I was astonished that this became public, almost forcing the pope to say 'yes' or 'no'" to the cardinals' questions about what exactly the pope meant in "Amoris Laetitia."

WaSHInGton (CnS) -- Urging Americans to look at their families for stories of immigration, the president and vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called attention to the hardships and contributions of immigrants to American society as the U.S. church prepared to observe National Migration Week. Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles also said in a Jan. 6 statement that the week is "an opportunity to embrace the important work of continuing to secure the border, to welcome the stranger and serve the most vulnerable" as components of "a humane immigration policy." National Migration Week was to be observed Jan. 8-14. "This year, we are invited to create a culture of encounter where citizens old and new, alongside immigrants recent and long-standing, can share with one another their hopes for a better life," said the statement marking the observance, which began 25 years ago as a way to reflect on how immigrants and refugees have contributed to the church. "Jesus, Mary and Joseph knew life as refugees, so let us also begin this encounter within our very own families." The prelates said migration is "an act of great hope" and those who are forced leave their homelands "suffer devastating family separation and most often face dire economic conditions to the point they cannot maintain a very basic level of living." War and persecution force refugees to leave their homelands, they said. They urged Catholics to seek stories from their families about how their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents left their homelands.

young adult's 'dark past' becomes asset in ministry to recovering addicts San DIeGo (CnS) -- By any measure, Scott Weeman seems contented. All of the pieces of his life seem to have fallen into place. The 31-year-old is a newlywed, married in September to his wife, Jacqueline. He enjoys the love of his family and a supportive community of friends. He has found fulfillment in a rewarding ministry. And he recently finished his first book, which will be published in late 2017. What a difference five years makes. Flashback to Oct. 9, 2011, when Weeman had hit bottom and, in a long-distance call to his parents and a few remaining close friends, admitted that he needed help. He had gone through "nine years of darkness," enslaved by an alcohol and drug addiction that damaged some of his closest relationships, cost him a full-tuition college scholarship and resulted in two driving under the influence charges and several underage drinking citations. Even after making the decision to sober up, he doubted whether he would ever be able to make up all the years he had wasted. "What's funny is that ... I thought that my life was over at the young age of 26 ... and that really the rest of my life would be playing catch-up," he said. But, as it turned out, that wasn't the case at all. "God has awoken me to believe ... that I can use my dark past as a great asset to help others," said Weeman, founder of the nonprofit organization Catholic in Recovery. Started in spring 2015 as nothing more than a blog, it received its nonprofit status in April. The organization's roots can be traced back to a discovery that Weeman made shortly after embracing sobriety, when he began attending meetings for recovering alcoholics and simultaneously getting more actively involved in the church. He said he found that the spiritual principles that were the foundation of both the church and addiction recovery programs "were really the same tenets." Catholic in Recovery offers addiction recovery resources within the context of Catholic spirituality and "the life-giving sacraments of the church," he explained. The organization has collaborated with parishes and schools, enabling them to improve their outreach to those struggling with any form of addiction, whether alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, gambling or food. The website CatholicInRecovery.com is home to a blog as well as a host of resources for those seeking help and encouragement on their path to recovery. Weeman also speaks at parishes throughout the Diocese of San Diego. In October, he addressed

a school assembly at Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley, as well as speaking at the Diocese of Fresno's annual congress. In January, Catholic in Recovery was to begin hosting twicemonthly meetings at San Diego's St. Joseph Cathedral for anyone whose life has been impacted by addiction. Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin, Weeman was 17 when he had his first drink. He soon began taking drugs, beginning with marijuana. After moving to New York City for college, he transitioned from social drinking and recreational drug use to addiction. He was using alcohol or drugs -- "usually both" -- on a daily basis, and he found himself needing more and harder drugs, including cocaine, to reach the same high. He even began selling marijuana. In 2010, Weeman moved to San Diego. He was still drinking excessively and using drugs at the time, but sobriety was just around the corner. "By the grace of God, about a year later, I had reached my bottom, lost practically everything that I had, minus some close friendships that I had back home (and) the unconditional love of my family, and called for help," he said. After that long-distance phone call, Weeman entered a substance abuse recovery program and also got involved with the young adult community at St. Brigid Parish in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego. Through his addiction, Weeman said, he was "humbled" to the point that he was willing "to give a personal relationship with God a chance." He ultimately came to accept "how much (God) loves me and how much he was willing to pursue me, even when I was hiding from him as much as I could." Though it has taken time, Weeman has rebuilt his life. He has repaired many of the relationships that that were damaged by his addiction. After several semesters at a local community college, where he worked to improve his grades, he was accepted into Point Loma Nazarene University and is set to graduate in May. Weeman remembers being told five years ago that "the key component" in his own recovery would be to take "the great gift" of freedom and hope that he had received and to share it with others. He still believes that, and that's what he hopes to accomplish through Catholic in Recovery. By ministering to those still in the throes of addiction or in the process of recovery, Weeman said, he is constantly reminded of the darkness he experienced and through which he passed.

u.S. bishops say that prayer, local dialogue key to bringing peace WaSHInGton (CnS) -- The Catholic Church has a "tremendous responsibility to bring people together in prayer and dialogue, to begin anew the vital work of fostering healing and lasting peace," said a report by a U.S. bishops' task force released Jan. 5 in the wake of last year's incidents of violence and racial tensions. The work to "root out racism and create healthy dynamics in our neighborhoods" is a long-term project, but the scope of it should not cause fear or intimidation, wrote Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta, chairman of the Task Force to Promote Peace in Our Communities, in the report's introduction. He also said "the church is at her absolute best when she is a bold and prophetic voice for the power of the love upon which our faith is based, the love of Jesus Christ." The task force is taking on a broad issue, but in its report, it breaks down what needs to be done into a few recommendations to the U.S. bishops, urging them to focus on: -- Prayer: Masses, rosaries, prayer services during the year. -- Local dialogues: conversations on race and dialogues hosted by parishes or dioceses. -- Parish and diocesan training: intercultural competence training for staff and parishioners. -- Opportunities for encounter: providing forums for people to examine local challenges firsthand. -- Support of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, which funds

terrorism" that has been killing so many innocent people the past year is "a homicidal madness which misuses God's name in order to disseminate death in a play for domination and power." Fundamentalist terrorism is the fruit of deep "spiritual poverty" that does not connect a pious fear of God with the mandate to love one's neighbor. Often it also is linked to deep social poverty, which demands action including on the part of government leaders. Political leaders must guarantee "in the public forum the right to religious freedom" and recognize the positive contribution religious values make in society, he said. They must promote social policies aimed at fighting poverty and promoting the family as well as invest heavily in education and culture so as to eliminate the sort of "terrain" that spreads fundamentalism. Christians, whose divisions "have endured too long," also must heal past wounds and journey forward together with common goals since many of those conflicts have threatened social harmony and peace, the pope said. Peace, he said, entails greater justice and mercy in the world, especially toward foreigners, migrants and refugees. "A common commitment is needed, one focused on offering them a dignified welcome," he said. It means recognizing people have a right to emigrate and take up a new residence without feeling their security and cultural identity are being threatened. Immigrants, however, also must respect local laws and cultures, he added. Handling today's waves of migration

group that address concerns about race, poverty and violence. The group also recommended that the National Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities be an annual observance, urged U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop committees to provide resources for racial healing and stressed that a statement on racism from the bishops was "more important than ever." A summary of the findings of the task force -- convened last year by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, then president of the USCCB -- was presented to the U.S. bishops in November at their fall assembly in Baltimore. The full report -- online at http://bit. ly/2iMX8rS -- highlights some of the activities promoted by the task force last year, including the nationwide celebration of a Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities Sept. 9 and listening sessions and interviews between members of the task force and community members. In describing some of the discussions that took place among task force members -- both bishops and lay leaders -- the report notes that there is not a one-time solution for overcoming racism and violence. In stressing the work ahead, the task force praised previous bishops' statements on racism, but said they were "not sufficient to address the difficulties of the moment." It also urged Catholics to look at where they might be contributing to race issues "from hiring practices to parish and school closures." The group stressed that the church should continue to pray for the challenges facing communities not just "in the heat of a tragic moment" but throughout the year. demands global responsibility and cooperation so that the "burden of humanitarian assistance" is not left to just a few nations at enormous cost and hardship. Peace also demands an end to the "deplorable arms trade" and a ban on nuclear weapons, he said. Easy access to firearms "not only aggravates various conflicts, but also generates a widespread sense of insecurity and fear." He called on the world community to do everything to encourage "serious negotiations" for an end to the war in Syria, the protection of civilians and delivery of the aid needed to address the "genuine human catastrophe" unfolding there. He urgently appealed for the resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians in order to guarantee "the peaceful coexistence of two states within internationally recognized borders." "No conflict can become a habit impossible to break," he said, underlining the urgent need for peace in the whole Middle East. The pope praised the church's efforts -- inspired by "mercy and solidarity" -- to avert conflict through negotiated solutions. He thanked the many individuals who followed this path of actively working for peace, resulting in the rapprochement between Cuba and the United States, and the end to conflict in Colombia. Lastly, peace also requires a common commitment to care for creation, he said. Pope Francis said he hoped that after the recent Paris Agreement, there would be increased cooperation by everyone in response to climate change. Because, he said, "the earth is our common home and we need to realize that the choices of each have consequences for all."

woman who survived abortion attempt to speak at walk for Life west coast San FranCISCo (CnS) -- Melissa Ohden was delivered during a saline infusion abortion, a 2-pound, 14-ounce baby suffering jaundice and respiratory distress after undergoing five days of inhaling toxic salt and Pitocin-laced amniotic fluid. An adopted child, she did not learn the facts of her birth until she was 14 during a childhood argument with her sister. It wasn't until last year that Ohden met her birth mother. She learned that her birth mother was forced to undergo the abortion procedure and that her mother's twin sister -- Melissa's aunt -- tried to help the pregnant 19-year-old escape from the hospital during the procedure in Sioux City, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1977. "It was literally forced upon her. She was given no other choice. We know that is representative of so many women," said Ohden, who will speak Jan. 21 at the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco. Ohden, who is now based in Kansas City, founded the Abortion Survivors Network, online at theabortionsurvivors.com. She counts 210 people who were born alive during an abortion. She said there may be many more. Those are only the ones who have contacted her. "I appeared to have a bleak future, but I was alive," Ohden wrote in an account in 2007 for The American Feminist. She was adopted by parents who knew "full well that as they opened their hearts and their home to me, they took a chance on raising a child who would quite probably not live past her infancy. If I did survive, I would more than likely be disabled." For years, Ohden "struggled with strong feelings of guilt for being physically, mentally and emotionally able. I know full well that millions of babies each year are not as lucky as I was." Today, Ohden told Catholic San Francisco, newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, that her experience and that of her mother highlight another often disregarded aspect of abortion. "As a woman, we often hear about abortion being a right. As a woman who survived an abortion, where is my right in that? Certainly the other piece of that is the rights of my biological mother. I spent years thinking she chose to abort me. It was literally forced upon her, she was given

no other choice," Ohden said. For 39 years, her birth mother believed Melissa had died in the abortion, as Melissa's adoption was arranged without her knowledge, Ohden said. To learn her child was alive, married, with two children and a successful career, was like a dream. Ohden has written a book, "You Carried Me: A Daughter's Memoir," which was published in early January. Her birth father

died before she could contact him. "I not only share my survival and my search for my biological family, I ultimately get to share how I've been united with her. It is honestly like nothing I could ever imagine," Ohden said. "I met her face to face for the first time just late last spring. What I love about the book is that it not only shares my story, but her story." "I was scared to write the

book because I wanted to protect her. When I finally sent it off to her, her response was she loved it," said Ohden, who first met her mother in person at a zoo with her half-sister and her children -- where the little cousins immediately took each other's hands. "It is the way God wanted the story to end. Who could have imagined 39 years ago? A forced abortion. The baby was meant to die and no one would ever know," Ohden said. Today

there is "love, forgiveness. We're part of each other's lives. We're committed to each other." For her adoptive mother and father, the story has been challenging too, because her parents did not know her birth mother was forced into the abortion and did not even know Melissa was alive. "My birth mother is thankful for my adoptive parents. There is so much love and respect on both sides."
