THE TOP 20 RESTAURANTS in Cayman

The concept for the Cayman Dining Guide is a simple one. Today, people want their information quick, accurate and precise. The modern traveller does not have time to read 130 page magazines, with eighty or more restaurant advertisers, to decide where to have lunch, dinner or just a drink. So our publishing team sat down around the table and debated for days what we felt was the definitive list of the top twenty restaurants in Cayman. Between us, we have well over one hundred years of living on this wonderful island which helps us to know a thing or two about the best places to eat! We made a list of just over twenty restaurants that we felt offered “best in class” food, service and atmosphere. We compiled the list from our own personal experience combined with reference to TripAdvisor (which we all know is not always the most accurate guide!). We were determined to include a broad range of “ best in class” restaurants that we knew you would want to see ... not just the 20 glitziest restaurants but, for example, restaurants that specialised in vegetarian and vegan, local Caymanian and West Indian food, a coffee shop, a casual waterfront bar, a family style restaurant, a Sunday Brunch recommendation ... as well as the traditional seafood, steakhouse, Italian, fine dining and other categories of restaurants. Cayman is often referred to as “The Culinary Capital of the Caribbean”. Many of the restaurants recommended specialise in seafood, as you would expect from an island with such an abundant variety of fish in its waters. But each restaurant has subtle variations in influence that may be French, Italian, Indian, Mediterranean or West Indian. And they all offer both land and sea choices no matter what their specialty. The fact that we recommend a restaurant or restaurants under a particular category on pages 3 and 4 does not mean that the other restaurants in this magazine are not also excellent places for that category as well. We therefore suggest that you read up on each and every restaurant- its description, its menu and wine list highlights and prices, the icons and map locations and the photos … and then decide for yourself ... What we can tell you though is that we as a team were unanimous that we would be more than happy to eat at every one of the places covered by Cayman Dining Guide. Now that we have explained the rationale for Cayman Dining Guide, we invite you to select the restaurants you wish to enjoy. As we have already said, so many of the Top 20 Restaurants transcend the Category for which we recommend them. There is no substitute for studying the information we have provided about each restaurant but if you want us to recommend them by category, then you will find our suggestions below.

FINE DINING

Start with a cocktail in the intimate lounge and then dine in the beautiful outdoor dining room under the stars.

BLUE

Blue, at the Ritz-Carlton in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, is in our view the most luxurious restaurant in the Cayman Islands. It is the only AAA 5-Diamond Star Restaurant in the Caribbean. This is essentially a seafood restaurant with international influences. The famed New York Chef Eric Ripert has created two magnificent tasting menus to complement an exquisite seafoodinspired menu and a choice of over seven hundred wines.

THE WHARF

The Wharf is waterfront dining at its best, where you can watch the magnificent sunsets over Seven Mile Beach. A sister restaurant to the iconic Grand Old House, we love this restaurant for its relaxed ambiance, great food and extensive wine list that has won the Wine Spectator Award fifteen years running. Try their conch fritters, basil and pistachio crusted sea bass or slow roasted rack of lamb.

SEAFOOD

GRAND OLD HOUSE

Possibly, the most iconic restaurant in Cayman. Originally designed as a stately Caribbean Great House on Petra Plantation it was built in 1908 and today provides a choice between an open air, waterfront deck that can seat up to 400 people or five private air-conditioned dining rooms exuding colonial elegance and charm and ideal for those wanting a more intimate evening. The crab cakes are outstanding and you cannot be disappointed if you order the chateaubriand or the bacon wrapped wahoo. Grand Old House is our featured cover restaurant this year.

THE WHITE HOUSE

The White House is a truly unique experience in Cayman. More than a restaurant, more than a beach bar, more than a magnificent house, it is a place where you can relax in total tranquility for the whole day while you are pampered with the finest service and attention to detail while you have lunch, dinner or just a drink and a swim in the sea or the pool. And all in the most beautiful and tranquil setting imaginable. A must.

CALYPSO GRILL

ITALIAN CASANOVA’S BY THE SEA

In town right on the4 water’s edge, this lively Italian restaurant offers inside or outside dining. Everything is made fresh to order and they will even do their best to accommodate off-menu requests. Live music keeps the party going! You can’t go wrong if you order the trifolata di funghi e gamberetti, linguine tutto mare and the tiramisu.

LUCA

This is a very classy restaurant with a compelling ambience. You can sit outside with a close view of the infinity pool and Caribbean Sea or inside in bistro style elegance. The seafood, pasta and meat dishes are all equally excellent and we can particularly recommend the Vitello Tonnato, Red Snapper Fillet and warm apple strudel. Brilliant wine list too and a very cozy bar.

RAGAZZI

Classic Italian restaurant with a truly Italian feel and buzz. A favourite for the locals and great for families. The kids will love the pizzas! Make sure you book in advance …. It is that popular. Every dish is fabulous but the tuna sashimi, mushrooms ravioli and mixed berry crepe are outstanding.

CONTINENTAL CARIBBEAN THE COMMODORE WATERFRONT RESTAURANT & BAR

The Commodore made the Top 20 Restaurants list not only because it has excellent food but because it is one of the most romantic and intimate places to dine in Cayman. If you are looking to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or engagement with your partner, they will feel truly appreciated if you take them to The Commodore on the water’s edge at Morgan’s Harbour.

The fresh fish comes in daily from the dock next door at Morgan’s Harbour and the moment you walk in to Calypso Grill, you think “I love this place”. It just has that ambience about it. Maybe it’s the old-world charm, maybe it’s the warm, friendly welcome from the staff, maybe it’s the sense that this is where the locals like to eat…. so it must be good. Believe us-it is way better than good!

CATCH

One of three excellent restaurants next to each other in Morgan’s Harbour, Catch is the newest, having been open just two years. It has quickly established itself though with its beautiful views of North Sound and daily fresh fish selections. Save room for dessert because the chocolate molten souffle is a real treat among a host of fine dessert choices.

WEST INDIAN / CAYMANIAN

No one should come to Cayman without experiencing Caymanian/ West Indian food. With Cayman being close to Jamaica, there are distinct similarities between the two cuisines. Don’t expect opulent surroundings but do expect to have an unique culinary experience.

PEPPERS BAR AND GRILL

are three venues in one here – Stogies Cigar Lounge, Bar Crudo (live sports shown here) and Guy Harvey’s Island Grill. Head Chef Indika has twice been awarded Cayman’s Chef of the Year. Seafood with a mix of French and Caribbean influences and great sushi and sashimi. Suggestions? the lobster bisque, blackened lionfish and sticky toffee pudding.

LOBSTER POT

The oldest restaurant in Cayman has undergone a complete refurbishment which included a beautiful open air second floor patio deck. A true seafood jewel, Lobster Pot buzzes at lunchtime and dinnertime. Some wonderful signature dishes here too …. We can especially recommend their unique Conch Fritters, their “Cayman Trio” of broiled lobster tail, grilled mahi mahi and garlic shrimp and their “Pot”, a delicious fusion of broiled lobster tail, giant garlic prawns and king crab legs.

STEAK SEVEN

Right on the beach at the RitzCarlton, Seven is the only steakhouse in the Top 20. You have a choice of inside, outside or in one of their beach 4

cabanas (for a small extra charge). Try the texas fried lobster with grits for an appetizer and then the 14oz rib eye steak with a choice of sauce for your main course.

TAPAS BACARO

One of the youngest restaurants in Cayman but already one of the best. An unique dining experience – Northern Italian tapas – nibbles, small plates, medium plates and large plates – order as many as your appetite allows and share them with your dining companions. You will love the chorizo stuffed calamari, crispy lobster bites with scotch bonnet & paprika aioli or the olive oil poached octopus.

VEGETARIAN / VEGAN ISLAND NATURALS

More and more people are eating healthy and Island Naturals is perfect for those who want to maintain that lifestyle – even when on vacation! Try a slice of their award-winning vegan, gluten-free cheesecake which won the Best Dessert at the Taste of Cayman 2015, or their wonderful selection of wraps and smoothies.

Fun, rustic and reasonably priced would be a good description of Peppers Bar and Grill. Live local bands on Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. All your favourite sports shown on TV screens. A strong Jamaican influence with lots of island jerk dishes, island style fish (fire roasted, steamed in coconut sauce, cooked in foil or with an escoveitch sauce), pizzas, pastries and charcoal grilled meat dishes.

FAMILY ANDIAMO

Looking for somewhere to take the kids for the day? Andiamo at the RitzCarlton is the place. Great kid’s menu and, after lunch, the kids can enjoy the Starfish Cay Water Park (you need to book in advance) and watch a movie under the stars at the Harbour Club theatre in the evening while the grown- ups enjoy dinner. A great way to spend an afternoon.

SUNDAY BRUNCH AGUA

Most of the Top 20 restaurants provide what is a staple of Caymanian life –Sunday Brunch. But Agua is a favourite of the locals so take that as a strong hint that it is really good … endless bubbles, five different styles of ‘a la minute egg’, a ceviche bar, hot and cold appetizers, local fish and a dessert buffet that will mean you won’t need to eat for a week!

Town, Camana Bay and Marquee Place (or Marquee Plaza as it is often called) is our coffee shop of choice for four reasons – its three locations, over 80 items to choose from on the menu, its focus on being a true internet coffee house, and most importantly, great coffee and lots of coffee choices.

WATERFRONT BAR BAR CRUDO

You cannot go wrong with Bar Crudo if it is a waterfront bar that you are looking for. Right in town on Hog Sty Bay overlooking the harbour and the cruise ships you will find great cocktails , sushi, tapas or a full dinner menu. Sports fans have two large TVs showing all the latest US sports and live music adds to the atmosphere.
