Wow, how fast is the New Year flying! Another edition of our magazine lies ahead and another activity filled couple of months lie ahead of us. What an amazing start to 2012 though. The club has been so busy on the back of the refurbishments and the television advertising showcasing the new facilities. It has been very encouraging to say the least. A huge thanks to our fantastic staff for their efforts through this time, one or two teething problems as expected but they have coped above and beyond the call! Well done. We’ve received some excellent feedback and rest assured where concerns or queries were raised we take all of those into consideration throughout our operations. Char, our new restaurant has been very well received and has been very popular in its new dining, cook to order format. The addition of the free kids play area has been a welcome addition, open all day, to the restaurant and it has been great to see so many new families from the area utilising the club facilities. Those outdoor dining areas have been so popular and the introduction of the extra lounge areas and separate sports bar lounge have been warmly welcomed and greatly used by so many!

And then we have our ANZAC Day memorial services on Wednesday 25th. The club will be open in the morning for the memorial services with the main club trading from 1pm onwards with entertainment in the auditorium from 1pm with Soul Cutz. Looking ahead with some of the major shows coming up we have our Elvis Tribute with the fabulous Dean Vegas making a welcome return to the club on Saturday 5th May. The Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams show will be here on Saturday 2nd June and, yes you asked for him, the archetypal Aussie Austen Tayshus is here in June on Saturday 16th. The Merchant of Menace will be on stage at Norths with all his classic skits for your enjoyment. Whatever you are looking for, we look forward to seeing you at Norths!

Stephen Gallacher, General Manager

The new gaming room has received great feedback both from our own patrons and within our own industry. It is always nice to receive praise for the work that has been done. In our foyer at the moment of course sits our major prize, the spectacular Toyota Rav 4. Don’t forget the final draw for this is on Sunday 1st April. Your chances to get into the final draw are every Friday evening, and Saturday, Sunday afternoons. This has been one of our most popular promotions of recent times and those keys are being fought over! We will move from the car on 1st April to a cash draw throughout the rest of that month – Spin a Fortune. Your chance to walk away each draw day with some cool hard cash lining your pockets! It’s amazing to think that we seem to have just gotten over Christmas and New Year and yet here we are thinking of Easter, which is really only a matter of weeks away as you read this. Don’t miss out on our spectacular Easter Hamper draws in the run up to Easter itself on Wednesday 4th April.

We ask Aussie’s QLD Mortgage Broker of the Year - What’s with the banks changing rates outside the RBA announcement? “The everyday Australian may find it difficult to understand why the banks are beginning to set their interest rates separately to the RBA’s cash rate. Currently it is estimated that the average cost of the major banks debt funding is about 90 to 100 basis points higher relative to the cash rate, than it was in mid-2007[1]. The end result is a squeeze on margin! While it may not seem fair that the banks are increasing rates when the RBA has held the cash rate, their decision is commercial. On the other end of the equation though, is the need for the banks to be competitive on price to win market share. The banks are trying to balance the need to be price competitive with the need for them to make a margin out of every home loan they write. The discount being offered on the standard variable mortgage rate is the best it has been in

recent times. It is currently around 0.9% where as in late 2008 and throughout 2009 it hovered around 0.1%. The bottom line is that the banks will now more likely base their interest rates on their cost of funding (which varies bank to bank), so it’s never been a more important time for consumers to review their home loan to see if they are getting the best deal for their needs. Let’s face it, is your bank going to tell you that their competitors cost of funding is less than theirs?” – Rochelle Hall (Aussie Strathpine Principle) Contact Rochelle’s personal assistant Sha Anthonisz on 07 38899544 to arrange an obligation free consultation with QLD’s best! Brave Michelle Shaves for a Cure Today 31 Australians will be given the devastating news that they have leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder. That’s more than 11,500 people this year. Although survival rates are improving, blood cancers like these are the second biggest cause of cancer death in Australia. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding, so supporting this event makes our Vision to Cure and Mission to Care possible. My name is Michelle Bone, you have probably seen me at the club working in the restaurant Char. I have been working at Norths for four years and have become very fond of the people and the club.

Your donations and sponsorship will also support families when they need it most, providing leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients with a free homeaway-from-home near hospitals during their treatment. It will also mean they can be transported to appointments and be provided with as much practical assistance and emotional support as possible, all free of charge. Michelle will be doing the shave off at Norths on Saturday 17 March from 12pm. To donate simply go to http://my.leukaemiafoundation. org.au/northleaguesandservicesclub

This year I have taken it upon myself to ‘Shave for a Cure”. I know my hair is long and some people may think cutting it is a shame, but there are a couple of reasons why I am doing this. It will be my 50th birthday soon and I was considering cutting my hair off for a change with my new age. I then decided to take advantage of my long hair for the benefit of others and registered for the ‘shave for a cure’. Having lost two close friends to cancer (Mandy and Joan) I feel without doubt that this is a more than worthy cause that I can contribute to in memory of my friends. I would also like to donate my hair to the cancer foundation as I think it would be much needed and appreciated. Donated hair can make the difference in the experience and confidence of a cancer patient, allowing the foundation to assist in hair regrowth through providing wigs to girls and women who have suffered hair loss as a result of cancer treatments. I would like you all to support this great cause by way of a small donation or sponsorship. Support me and my workmates by colouring or shaving your hair with us. You can colour your hair for a gold coin donation on the day at the club from 11.45am. Thank you to the Norths community for your support and I look forward to this exciting adventure. The money Michelle raises will go towards research, which is needed to find better treatments and cures for leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Andrew Wishart Live at Norths

X-Factors Andrew Wishart will rock Norths Leagues and Services Club on Saturday 21st April.

Andrew Wishart; is a 41 year-old singer from suburban Melbourne Victoria, who against the odds, made it to the recently finished grand final of X-Factor Australia; to be placed eventual runner up in the series. Andrew sang Adele’s “Someone Like You” at his first audition, and was inspired to try out for the show by his four children, who also suggested he should sing that song. This proved to be a challenge as Andrew basically learnt the song in his car during the night before this audition. “I never started along this path for so called fame... I did it to show my children that anything can be done, and that “can’t” is not a word I want to hear from them very often”. Originally from The East Gippsland area of Victoria, Andrew considers the towns of Bruthen and Bairnsdale as his ‘other’ homes, and holidays there regularly with family. The X-Factor proved to be something a whole lot more than what he and his family could ever have imagined..... “All along I told the producers I would be guided by them, as I knew nothing of the TV industry at all; but I remained steadfast in the belief that I just wanted to be ‘real’!” With candid and personal mentoring from Natalie Bassingthwaite, with whom Andrew maintains a solid friendship, remaining humble and ‘real’ was very natural. Andrew struck a chord with Australians, and was the only contestant to never be voted into the bottom two ‘sing for your life’ showdowns; and eventually lost the Grand Final by a meagre 1% of the national votes!

Saturday 21st August 2012

24

Don’t miss your chance to see the hits Andrew performed on the show plus much, much more live in concert. Andrew will be performing at Norths on Saturday 21st of April. Tickets are now on sale from the club’s Reception for $40 per person.

Ever golfed at the Caboolture Golf Club? If so, you’ll see his signs making fun of his weight, so he’s quite into taking the ‘mickey’ out of himself. Putting “Memorial” back into Anzac Avenue

Lines of mango trees along Anzac Avenue opposite North Lakes. When these trees were planted in the 1920s the road was called Anzac Memorial Avenue and these and other avenues form part of the roads memorial heritage.

There are many ways to honour our war hero’s. Amongst the many memorials that have been created over the last 100 years there is one that has been somewhat neglected. It may surprise younger readers to learn that Anzac Avenue used to be called Anzac ‘Memorial’ Avenue. The road which was made in the early 1920’s as a tribute and memorial to those thousands of soldiers from the district who were lost in the Great War. Anzac Memorial Avenue which includes avenues of trees was made and named to represent a lasting reminder of our fallen diggers in the Great War and in wars and conflicts since.

One of the distinctive pillar sculptures in the Centenary Garden which is on Anzac Avenue. The memorial which was created in August 2011 is a tribute to those who served and continue to serve Australia below and above the sea.

There are many specific memorials on the road including the memorial gardens outside Norths Leagues & Services Club, where the second largest dawn service will be held once more on ANZAC Day.

Local Councillor David Dwyer and a committee which includes Council, Main Roads, Heritage Council, Police, Energex and Norths Leagues & Services Club are preparing for the events around the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The committee has a petition where signatures are being collected to be submitted to the Transport & Main Roads to have the word “Memorial” reinstated in Anzac Avenue. (Anzac Memorial Avenue). The Committee would appreciate the name of Anzac Memorial Avenue to be reinstated prior to the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War in 2014. The renaming of Anzac Avenue would be a fitting tribute to honour all those who must never be forgotten so that we are constantly reminded of the sacrifice when we drive along the road named in their honour. If you would like Anzac Avenue to have its original name Anzac Memorial Avenue reinstated you can register your name on the petition at the Norths Leagues & Services Club reception desk. The RAAF Spitfire propeller is a fitting tribute to those who serviced in the RAAF and defended Australia during the wars of the 20th Century. The memorial is on Anzac Avenue in the heart of Kallangur.
