Well, it is finally upon us! We are putting the final touches to the first stage of our renovation plans and within the next few weeks (mid-July) we should be underway and it’s going to be GREAT! The next few months will see many progressive changes throughout Norths as your club undergoes it’s biggest makeover ever. To say, ‘bigger than Ben Hur’ is understating! Ok, I’ve got your expectations up now but truly, we touch on creating new outdoor areas for relaxation and dining, more space in our inside dining area, new kids play areas, new furnishings throughout the dining and lounge areas, new DOSAs, whole new gaming floor layout, greater privacy around the gaming floor, new change box, new carpets through to the restaurant/lounge area (they themselves get this in the next stage). Importantly as well, the club façade gets a massive makeover not least of all with the new outdoor areas but with some fantastic features to give our club much more street appeal and presence – to make people take far more notice of the club – and down the length of the driveway there will be some lovely shrubbery established to break up this long wall together with some new features to bring much of this area into use within the club. One constant in all of this however will be the continuous high standard of service that our staff provide day in, day out. Some things are just too good to be changed!! We have some great promotions over the next couple of months with more chances to win than ever. There are 24 of the latest 51 inch (yes 51 inch not just 50 – we always go that little bit extra for you) ultra slim plasma screens able to be won throughout July and August. Your chance to win one TV each and every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with tickets carrying over each day into the next day’s draw up to the Sunday. So if you enter on Friday, you can come back with the same numbers on Saturday or Sunday or BOTH and still be in the draw! How’s that for great value and giving you a great chance to win. With the dawning of our refurbishments there will be changes in our entertainment over the next weeks and we hope you will enjoy the fabulous piano entertainment in the main lounge. Many of you will remember the piano entertainment in the Upper Terrace overlooking the entrance which we had over Christmas and New Year and also the piano at the recent “Casino Royale” evening a few weeks ago and this will be very much in that vein (if not the exact same as we have the same pianists lined up!). These blokes are sensational and we have been looking for (and talking to many of you and hearing

2

Norths July–August ’11

what you have been asking for) a difference in our entertainment that you just cannot get anywhere else. There’s so much lined up with entertainment that I can’t cover it all here so please check out our website www.northsleagues.com and the inside pages for more details of what’s on. Peter James’ Treasure Day continues to play every Friday from 10am to 2pm with some sensational acts from all over Australia. This is a great day out with some entertainers that you rarely see. If you haven’t seen Peter’s show then please come on over and check it out. If you’re not sure what it’s all about, please ask – grab me when you see me in the club and I’ll talk your ear off about how good it is!! Lastly, I must take the opportunity to thank all of my hard working management team and their department staff. Your efforts over the last few months have been huge and are greatly appreciated. It’s very rewarding to have a team who get on board and who work tirelessly to make this club run so smoothly and whose enthusiasm is at times inspiring. I look forward to the next few months as I know all of you are! Thank you all. Stephen Gallacher, General Manager

Its-UnAustralian Australians are a pretty relaxed and laid back mob, we also believe in a fair go and we like a punt. Our national anthem starts with the words “Australians all let us rejoice for we are young and free.” Well the current Julia Gillard led government are not behaving like Australians, they want to take away the freedom of club members with a new Law that nobody voted for. The new gaming regulations are only being considered because the minority Gillard government have to keep Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie happy. In trying to suck up to this maverick Tasmanian politician, the Gillard government are putting the entire club industry and thousands of jobs at risk. We spoke to Stephen Gallacher the General Manager at Norths Leagues and Services Club who is extremely concerned about what might happen if these un-Australian laws are passed. “Norths is the single biggest employer in Kallangur with up to 130 people being employed here,” he said. “Clubs do not make a profit in the same way that listed companies do. All surpluses are re-invested back into the

6

Norths July–August ’11

Stephen Gallacher General Manager Norths Leagues Services Club

club and facilities for the benefit of members,” said Stephen. “Norths alone puts just under one million dollars per annum into local community organisations, and Queensland clubs provide around $668 million per year of support to local organisations,” he continued. Stephen believes if the new reforms go through Norths and many other clubs are under real

threat. “The question is, when our Queensland clubs are vindictively destroyed by nonsensical policies, by a government who want to hang onto power at any cost, who in Queensland will replace and provide this level of annual support to our children’s sports, schools and RSLs, to the elderly, and so many other community organisations?” said Stephen.

It is not only Stephen Gallacher who fears the worst from the new rules, here is what Peter Dutton, Federal Member for Dickson and Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing had to say when we asked him to comment. “The handshake deal between Julia Gillard and Tasmanian Independent Andrew Wilkie to introduce a pre-commitment system for poker machines by 2014 will destroy local clubs, kill local jobs and starve our local sporting teams and community groups of much needed funding,” he said.

Hon. Peter Dutton, Federal Member for Dickson and Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing

“I want to make sure that as a community we provide support to problem gamblers. Equally though I don’t want to tell the vast majority of people who play responsibly, how, when and where they should play. “We (the Coalition) do not believe that a mandatory pre-

commitment system for poker machine use will be effective in tackling problem gambling.” “It creates a situation where it’s assumed all Australians are problem gamblers and that is not the right way to approach this issue. Most Australians gamble responsibly,” said Peter. “There is also another reason the new laws are unfair on clubs and the members,” Stephen Gallacher again. “The proposals also impose the need for clubs to update their current gaming machines and replace them with new technology. The cost for Norths alone would be many millions of dollars, added to that would be an ongoing overhead of $250,000 per annum to pay for increased monitoring costs,” he said. So why is the government hell bent on telling us how to punt, and trying to employ big brother tactics on club members when there are no restrictions on how much you can bet on the internet, playing lotto or even a flutter on the horses? It’s a point taken up by local state MP Mary Ann O’Neill. “Perhaps we should focus on unregulated on-line betting, and look at the perils associated with that,” she said. “I know what a great asset to our area Norths Leagues and Services Club is, and the great support it is to our community.” “I would not like to see anything that would diminish the club’s operations here,” said Mary

Mary-Anne O’Neil, Queensland Government Member for Kallangur

Anne. The reality is that the proposed un-Australian regulations on anyone who wants a punt at their club will put Queenslanders out of work and close the doors on many RSL and sporting clubs. So what can be done? Julia Gillard would rather listen to a rogue Tasmanian MP than to the vast majority of Australians, so it’s time to tell your local member and the government what you think. Who voted to cut funds to Junior Sport or our RSL diggers, who voted to put up the price of your beer and who voted to close our clubs. If you didn’t then you should visit the campaign website and say No, visit ITS-UNAUSTRALIAN.COM.AU and have your say or write to your local member. It really is time to save your club.

MYTHbusting the problem gambling deal Following last year’s close Federal election results, Prime Minister Julia Gillard signed an agreement with Tasmanian independent, Andrew Wilkie, in return for his support of her minority government. The agreement requires the government to implement drastic measures, in particular a mandatory precommitment scheme on gaming machines and withdrawal limit of $250 on ATMs located in all gaming venues except casinos. The Prime Minister appointed a Parliamentary Joint Select Committee (PJSC) to assess the effectiveness and to work out how these reforms could be implemented. The PJSC released its first report in May and essentially endorsed the reforms, with a few changes to the timelines and other aspects. This is not surprising, as the whole exercise was to justify and defend the agreement (at any cost).

(RGAC), established by the Queensland Government, is one of the most innovative forums in the world because it includes representatives from the government, industry and the community, who come together and find common ground to address problem gambling.

MYTH: Mandatory pre-commitment system will reduce problem gambling. FACT: Problem gamblers will be able to set an arbitrary and high limit on these “smart cards and continue to gamble. Wilkie refuses to trial mandatory pre-commitment at a broader (and acceptable) level to test its benefits against the recommendations of the Productivity Commission.

MYTH: Recreational gamblers have nothing to fear from the mandatory pre-commitment scheme. FACT: Mandatory pre-commitment scheme captures all players and treats them as problem gamblers by default. As such, people who gamble responsibly (over 99% of the adult population) will be required to obtain a smart card, which is in effect a “licence to gamble”.

MYTH: The gaming industry is not serious about problem gambling. FACT: Queensland’s existing responsible gaming framework is working and has seen the rate of problem gambling in Queensland fall from 0.83% in 2001 to 0.37% of the adult population in 2009, and continues to decline. The Responsible Gambling Advisory Committee

MYTH: Recreational gamblers can play low intensity machines and avoid the mandatory pre-commitment scheme. FACT: There is nothing called a low intensity gaming machine anywhere in Australia. Wilkie is suggesting a two-tier gaming machine environment now, which is technically challenging to say the least and expensive to implement.

Your Jewel of the North

MYTH: Mandatory pre-commitment scheme is a social good. FACT: It is a political deal between Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Andrew Wilkie and binds the Prime Minister to implement it at all costs. It is driven by personal and political interest, not for the benefit of the problem gamblers or the more than 99% of people who gamble responsibly. It creates more problems than it can solve, for instance it impacts player’s privacy and confidentiality (‘big brother provisions’).

MYTH: Norths are a big club, they won’t be hurt by this, it’s just a beat up. FACT: Norths Leagues and Services Club will be hurt very badly if the new laws are passed. As Kallangurs biggest employer, it will damage the local economy. It will also hurt the RSL and Junior Sport, both of whom rely on Norths for support. The hundreds of thousands of dollars that this not-forprofit club give to the community may well completely disappear. MYTH: Australian pokie players are losing in excess of $1,200 an hour. FACT: This is not possible in Queensland. If you were engaged in “extreme play” betting $5 per bet (the maximum allowable) your maximum potential loss/per hour is $450. Note: This extreme play is not relevant to the majority of people who gamble responsibly. MYTH: Australia has 20% of the world’s poker machines. FACT: This is sheer sensationalism. It is just over 2%. MYTH: The industry is opposed to precommitment scheme. FACT: The industry is not opposed to a precommitment scheme. We are opposed to the scheme being mandatory. We believe the mandatory pre-commitment scheme is not the silver bullet (the Productivity Commission agrees with us) and is most effective in a “suite” of responsible gambling measures that complement each other to provide maximum support to problem gamblers. MYTH: Mandatory Pre Commitment will not affect your local not for profit community club. FACT: There is a real risk that many community clubs will simply close their doors, as a

“mandatory” pre-commitment scheme is an expensive technology to implement. Coupled with the revenue hit, this measure could send many clubs bankrupt. MYTH: Community clubs profit from gambling. FACT: Community clubs are not for profit, member driven and community orientated associations of people. They support a wide range of causes, including sporting. No one can personally profit from club operation and any net financial surplus must be returned to members and the local community. THE FACT IS THAT: Queensland’s community clubs generate approximately • 51 million active hours in sport or leisure • Employ 26,900 staff • Give back over $668 million annually • Generate 4.8 million volunteer administration hours and oversee/maintain/enhance $1.77 billion in sporting/welfare/memorial assets To support our cause and the It’s Un-Australian campaign, log onto the website www.its-unaustralian.com.au and sign the petition or call Rachel Bilsborough at Clubs Queensland on 3252 0770

Fashion Parade set the trend

When it comes to fashion the ladies of the Pine Rivers RSL-Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary are certainly setting the trend. On 14th September the fourth Fashion Parade will be held at the Ivy Room, Norths Leagues & Services Club. By all accounts this year’s parade will be bigger and better than ever and the ladies of the women’s auxiliary would like to extend a warm welcome to all club members and friends to come along. Commencing at 10.30am for an 11am start the parade will feature all the latest fashions from the Millers Spring Collection. Anyone who attends the parade can purchase the items on display and there will also be a selection of fashions at discounted prices. The entry fee to the Fashion Parade is only $10.00 and refreshments will be provided as

Pedal Power to help conquer cancer For two days in August thousands of ordinary Australians will saddle up for a 200km ride through Queensland’s scenic countryside. The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer will provide much needed funds to the Queensland Institute of Medial Research. With each rider having to raise a minimum of $2,500 in donations. The girls are registered participants in the ride and have committed to cycle over the course of two days and raise a minimum of $2,500 each to aid the ongoing fight against cancer. One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and we all know someone who has been affected. This is certainly true of Michelle Manson and Jane McDonald who both work at Norths Leagues & Services Club. Both Michelle and Jane have experienced the impact that cancer can have on a family and have stood by as close family and friends have lost their loved ones. “For both of us the hardest part was never being able to do anything,” said Michelle. “Being there wasn’t enough. To us this ride is about the research that may be conducted as a result of the funding raised,” she continued. “If the

Michelle Manson and Jane McDonald hope to raise over $5,000 between them when they ride the Conquer Cancer Event

money we help raise can save one family from going through the pain of watching their loved one suffer, then we have accomplished what we have set out to do.” She said. If you would like to support the girls and donate to their ride simply go to www.conquercancer. org.au and select “donate”. Search for either Michelle Manson or Jane McDonald and once you have found them simply select the “donate online now” button. Any amount would be very much appreciated as both girls would love to reach the specified target of $2,500 which is needed to participate in the ride. Everyone at Norths Leagues & Services Club wish both our girls the very best in their efforts to ride to conquer cancer.
