Roger Moore’s Passing Means No More Confusion With Pierce Brosnan

At the age of 89, British actor Roger Moore passed away, having achieved humanitarian success that surpassed his cinematic career. Moore had the unenviable task of replacing Sean Connery as James Bond, the coolest, suavest secret agent in history. As Bond, Moore vamped the role so obviously that he was never recognized for his acting ability. No one could take Moore seriously as Bond; following the more rugged and worldly appearing Connery, it was a caricature that Moore played. He did star in seven of the genre which tied Connery’s appearances but never received the audience or critical accolades of the originator - which was only right. Moore’s role wasn’t much better than David Niven’s, who couldn’t have fought his way out of a wet paper bag and was ‘way too old to even be considered James Bond. Moore did much better as the British relative of Bart and Bret Maverick and perhaps his best acting series was, “The Saint”, in which he played Simon Templar, the enigmatic action hero who helped put wealthy crooks in jail while absconding with their fortunes. Moore stayed as Bond until he was 58; the aging did not play well with the tongue-in-cheek screen efforts of Moore. Perhaps the most damning criticism came when Pierce Brosnan assumed Moore’s role as Bond. As badly as Moore was at being cast as Bond, Brosnan was worse. An Irish version of Moore, Brosnan did not possess the gravitas of an actor who should play this role. His success on Remington Steele in the 1980’s made him a front and center candidate for the role following Moore’s reign. With similar comedic personna, both Moore and Brosnan were interlinked as the post-Connery faux Bonds, sort of like confusing the late Bill Paxton with Bill Pullman.

Hi Everyone, Hope all is well and you are not too water logged with all the rain we have been having. I am sure it is good for all the gardens that have been planted but, a one day break in between would be nice. But, I guess later this summer we will have many long hot days without rain and we will be wanting it. Oh well! With graduations and dance recitals finally coming to an end for this year, are you focusing more on crafting or anxiously awaiting the day you will finally be leaving for summer vacation. I am thinking crafting and deciding what I will be making for the fall craft shows. This is the time of year I usually start thinking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I know a lot of you are saying, let’s not rush into the holidays. But, as many crafters know you have to start early to make sure things are ready. I can hardly believe we are already in June. Wow! where has the time gone?! In just a few short weeks our grandson, Dion, will be leaving for college. That is something I am not looking forward to. I know I will miss him like crazy! I won’t be going to the bowling alley as much since he won’t be here. Less running on my part. Do you ever wish you could just slow down a little, do less than you have been doing as the years go by? Nah, me either. I will have to find something else to do to fill that void when he leaves. I like having bunches of things to do! By the way, I have decided to teach one class a month, so if you are interested, email me for details. Crafts will vary.

So let’s get to today’s project. I had some flowers left over from the bouquets I had made and decided to make this little center piece. The red, white, and green makes me think holidays!

And this is such a simple piece to make. I had 6 roses. some mini carnations, limonium, and leather leaf fern. I found a small green floral container Carlea’ and I were putting marbles in so I decided to use that. The first thing I did, after soaking and placing the floral foam in it was place my leather leaf into the floral foam, next I added the roses, than mini carnations and finally the limonium. This would be more festive by adding ornaments or plastic candy canes. How about a couple of those glittery gift box picks? The possibilities are endless. Let me know what you would add to yours to make it more festive. With just a little imagination and a few left over items. anything can become your master piece.

Grass-fed beef, as its name implies, comes from animals that eat perennial grasses all their lives.

In contrast, “Grain-fed” beef is what is most commonly sold in supermarkets. While all cattle are grass-fed at some point in their lives, conventionally raised cows spend the majority of their lives feeding on corn and other grains, typically in a confined feedlot. Most beef cattle spend their short life in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), where a thousand or more head of steer are kept in close, concentrated conditions and fattened up for slaughter as quickly as possible. Since the 1950s it has become routine practice to add low levels of antibiotics to the feed or water of healthy poultry, cattle, and swine to promote faster growth and prevent infections that tend to occur when animals are housed in crowded, unsanitary conditions. The practice is now so common that according to the FDA, which regulates the use of antibiotics in food animals, 80 percent, or the lion share of antibiotics used in the United States, are used not in humans but in animals, and most of those - an estimated 83 percent -are given to healthy animals, not to treat the sick ones.

The problem is, as organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) recognize, the “overuse and misuse of antibiotics in food animals” is a major source of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are affecting humans, a major public health crisis. Increasingly, bacteria are resistant to multiple antibiotics, leading to infections that are difficult to treat and sometimes impossible to cure, require longer and more expensive hospital stays, and are more likely to be fatal. At the same time, the development of new antibiotics has slowed to a trickle. In some cases, there are now few or no antibiotics that work to treat drug resistant bacterial infections.

Pastured cattle don’t require the drugs their CAFO’d cousins do. But again, a wise shopper should know that antibiotics are allowed for certain grass-fed certification programs, USDA Process Verified for one, while not for others, such as the American Grassfed Association. Remember: they aren’t munching on monoculture lawn cuttings (let alone soy and corn). They’re eating a wide variety of (often wild) grasses, sedges, rushes, shrubs, and herbs, each with its own nutrient profile. Of course, how nutritious those graminoids are depends on the quality of the soil, or the terroir. If we care about what our food eats, we should also care about what the food that our food eats is eating, right? Grass-fed isn’t just miraculously higher in selenium because of some magic process; it’s higher because grass grown in good wild soil patrolled by plenty of mobile, self-perpetuating organic fertilizer machines contains more selenium than soybeans or corn grown on nutrient deficient land. It should follow that pastured, grain-supplemented beef raised on good soil by good ranchers also contains higher levels of micronutrients when compared to the CAFO cow, albeit not as high as the purely grass-fed.

9. Pastured animals are treated more humanely. Remember, when you eat beef or any CAFO’s animal, you are eating whatever they ate once you eat them.

From a humanitarian perspective, there is yet another advantage to pastured-animal products.

The cruelties of modern factory farming are severe, with livestock cooped up in cages barely larger than their own bodies, or packed together like sardines for months on end, standing kneedeep in their own manure. Pastured livestock are not forced to live in confinement and to endure the miseries of factory farming. But buyer beware: some beef labels have only vague standards regarding animal welfare, while others have detailed rules that ensure animal health and wellbeing in a clean, comfortable environment. 10. Grass-fed is more expensive.

Yes, you read it right, grass-fed beef is more expensive, but maybe as a result, we may eat less of it. This is a good thing, actually, both for our health and for the environment. And honestly, feedlot beef is not really cheaper, not when you add the invisible costs: of antibiotic resistance, environmental degradation, heart disease, E. coli infection, corn subsidies, imported oil and so on. But be advised, while pastured-animal products may have many advantages over factory farm and feedlot products, they are still high in saturated fat (though not as high), still high in cholesterol, and still devoid of fiber and many other essential nutrients. They take less toll on the environment, but the land on which the animals graze still must often be irrigated, thus using up dwindling water resources, and it may be fertilized with petroleum-based fertilizers.

So eat less meat, and when you do, make sure you choose grass-fed, knowing you are supporting a humane, health-promoting, environmentally responsible system of agriculture. Those guys come at you with the unstoppable intent of placing one regulation basketball either in the hoop or in your ear - your choice. The Warriors don’t play Mob basketball; they have no enforcer like the old days and no one is ever going to average double figures on the boards. But all that muscle is sitting at home or in the arenas in Oakland or Cleveland in June watching the two best basketball teams go at each other for the third straight year.

The difference last year is that the Warriors lost Draymond Green for a critical game because of his proclivity to foul most foully. They also didn’t have Andrew Bogut, their answer to post-up muscle, for the 2016 series. Bogut stayed home this year because of injuries as well. This year he is a non-competing Cavalier instead of a non-competing Warrior, having broken his leg mere seconds into his first appearance for the Cavaliers.

Back to Durant. He might have the best three-point shot for a big man EVER in pro basketball.

This, added to the best three-point shooter of all time, Steph Curry and the third best, Klay Thompson, added to defensive and attitude glue man Draymond Green, gives the Warriors so many offensive weapons. But Durant took his game to a different level last week with so many dunks that donuts everywhere were jealous. No opposing player was knocked on their backside when Durant scored but a couple were faked off their feet as the fierceness of the Durant charge took place. 38 points. It’s still a long series, especially remembering last year’s and the other-world presence of James, who remains the best basketball player on the planet, especially mentally and endurance-wise.

But if Durant’s confidence continues this week as it started in Game One and if Klay Thompson starts hitting baskets again, it will be Four Love for Golden State and Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and LeBron James staying home for Cleveland. There is nothing for James to get motivated about as much this year as were the ill-advised comments by Thompson last year. LeBron’s not making the top three vote-getters in the all-NBA voting was motivation weeks ago but it doesn’t have enough legs to sustain James against the likes of the Warrior juggernaut, whom, like the Soviet submarine commander in Red October, “will not make the same mistake twice.”

This story is from 11.05.16 - Captain Hoop’s boat is under repair this week.

I ran 2 days for Mike Jeffcoat of RJ Hunting and fishing. The first day the winds were howling and everybody struggled. The active bull red fishing we had enjoyed the last few weeks was not happening. After reaching the area it was evident the guys were not going to be able to stand and cast easily. One of my guys had knee and hip issues and my goal for the day was to net fish out of the water not people out of the water.

I did manage to get an action shot of the beginning of a power run by a good sized redfish. You can even see the waves in this very sheltered cove. The runs that these fish make are so much fun in shallow water. Give them some canes to get into and the situation gets even more challenging.

I decided to move about 10 miles across open water to an area that would offer us some protection. I had not been that area in months so I had no idea what to expect. The ride to that place was head on waves but with the boat trimmed right and a much slower speed the ride was reasonably comfortable and dry. Our tide was almost low and a slow rise but the wind would hold that tidal rise to an even slower minimum. Looked like the fish gods would be against us.

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

DON’T CATCH FISH WHEN THEY ARE LAZY Notes from Forrest Green’s “Fish Whisperer” seminars in Lacombe every Thursday evening 5-6:30 Mr Green has been studying the wheres and whys of South Louisiana fresh and saltwater fishing for the past 40 years or longer. His success rate has been among the highest in the state and led him to do some competitive fishing for several years on several fishing tours. Mr. Green goes fishing nearly every day. Plan on attending one of Mr. Green’s talks at Bayou Adventure. Bayou Adventure is located 27725 Main Street at Lake Road in Lacombe. It’s just to the left as you come into town from Slidell.

There is something to be said for plain old white bread. Say What ??? Yes, it isn’t healthy, no texture and plain old vanilla. But there are some fun things you can do with white bread.

Kids love to play with their food. Let’s face it parents, School is out for Summer! How can we fill all the empty hours of “I’m bored”? My solution is play with food. A simple star cookie cutter can become the best toy.

The other day I made adorable Flower Power toasts for an adult garden group. But all I kept thinking was,”I can’t wait to let my kids at cooking camp make these.” Then as I started to write this article, I realized the inner me loves cookie cutters because my grandmother had a small star cutter. She would let me make star crackers out of left-over pizza dough. I would sprinkle them with course salt. I loved snacking on my star crackers. I made stars out of her pie crust dough and sprinkled them with sugar.

Now I use cookie cutters to cut watermelon, cut pound cake, brownies and yes, white bread.

Muddy water - not a factor. Fish live in the Mississippi in mud, why not everywhere else? You fish where the strongest fish feed….only the strong survive. Why are the trout in the lake stronger than those down in Delacroix or Shell Beach? Our water on the Northshore flows hard from the rivers. The fish have no place to hide. The fish have to develop muscle. Like a workout device, but done more than fifteen minutes per day and with a higher upside than humans face.

Fish need it to survive. And with less water pressure the farther south you go the fish also have more structure to hide in in these lower areas as well. Compare all seafood. Crabs are sweeter on the Northshore coming from brackish water, not pure salt water.

Fishing with the wind and tide. Cast into the flow and with the wind. Retrieve against the tide.

If the wind and tide are opposite, add a 1/2 ounce weight and cast across the waves. This puts the line on the bottom and you can drag and reel as you go. Bounce and reel continuously.

Keep no slack in the line and move the lure. Look at your lure before each cast to check for grass, lure setting and bait security and how the lure sets on the hook shank. Next time: “fish pants and pretty lures”.

1 pound of softened butter About a cup of flower petals, organic chemical-free Dianthus, marigolds, bee balm, rose petals, chive blossoms, basil blossoms Tarragon blossoms, pineapple sage blossoms, borage flowers, A handful of fresh chives, basil leaves and parsley Fresh cracked pepper In a food processor, place flowers and herb blossoms.

Pulse a few times.

Remove into a bowl with soft butter.

Process herbs and add to butter.

Mash blossoms and herbs into butter. Crack some pepper to taste.

Shape butter into a log. Wrap in parchment paper and chill.

Cut white bread with a flower cutter. Toast in a 350* oven, crisp.

Spread butter on toast. Place a slice of cucumber or radish in the middle to look like the button in the flower.

Tiger Ladies Fail in WCWS Bid; Men Continue On Towards Omaha Later In June The Lady Tigers clawed their way to Oklahoma City for their latest attempt to win what has become a birthright for their male counterparts: The Collegiate Baseball World Series. The ladies ran into a Florida Gator buzzsaw in Game Two after beating a feisty UCLA squad in their opener. Then they were eliminated by the Oregon Ducks on Saturday to end what had become a very good season for them.

All American senior Sahvanna Jaquish plated a run, denied a UCLA run at the plate and helped by her teammate, Constance Quinn, who posted the deciding run in defeating the Bruins, 2-1 on Thursday. Then it was back to reality as the loaded Gators and the long ball hitting Ducks finished the Tigers’ year in OKC. Not so for the men. Trailing both Texas Southern and Southeastern Louisiana during their first two games in the regionals at Alex Box Stadium, theTigers rolled out the long ball and their come-from-behind heritage to sweep past both undermanned squads, which were ranked 4th and 2nd, respectively, in the four-team regional. Now LSU faces Southeastern again for the title after SLU defeated Rice to eliminate the Owls from the tournament. If LSU wins, which they are expected to do, they will host the winner of the Hattiesburg regional, most likely Southern Miss, to determine if they will be one of the eight CWS participants in Omaha in mid-June.

Watching other regional games, it is obvious to me that the overall strength and balance of the Oregon State Beavers will be the Tigers’ main obstacle in winning a seventh national championship. Every other team that looks to make the Super Regionals lacks one or more elements that the Tigers and the Beavers possess.

Oregon State has won two titles this century and a matchup of these teams could be the best we can hope for in Omaha. LSU’s base running speed is second to no one else’s; their outfield speed and defensive prowess is also the nation’s best. They have a solid three starter rotation, two good to very good closers and enough of a bench to fill in where needed. They have a balanced hitting lineup and righty-lefty matchups and one of the three or four best college baseball coaches in the country with Paul Mainieri.

They are senior-led and have the right mental stuff to make Omaha their very reachable location for the Tigers’ Lucky 7th national title. Win in 2017 and a tie with Texas as the number two CWS winningest team gets broken. Even with the incredible decline of their program over the past decade, it would seem almost insurmountable to match or beat the 12 titles won by Southern Cal, starting in the 1960’s and ending with one title in the late 1990’s Their coach was Ron Dedeaux and it is refreshing to know a Cajun coach brought the Trojans their baseball immortality.

Look for the pedigree of the Tigers to kick in for the rest of their run to Omaha. Like I mentioned, it doesn’t look like any other team will pose a fatal threat to the Tigers as they possibly wend their way towards a highly explosive matchup with Oregon State. which is eating up their regional as the host, naturally.

Like Bama football, this is the Tigers’ time of year. It will take more than a TCU, North Carolina, Florida or Louisville to derail LSU. Come to think of it, at least one or two of these four teams might not even make it to Omaha. The Tigers will respect all and fear none. They know Vanderbilt has the pitching to steal a super regional and win it all in Omaha; others have come from the back of the pack to do the same. But the Tigers were smacked at home by last year’s winners, Coastal Carolina. And Carolina didn’t even make the field of 64 to be playing last week. No Miami, no USC. Seems strange. As it has been for the past decade or so, it is up to LSU to carry the collegiate baseball standard in the postseason. Don’t be surprised as this team becomes the embodiment of the 2009 national champion LSU baseball Tigers, which beat the Texas Longhorns to tie them for the runner-up championship spot with six titles.

LDWF to Host WETSHOP 2017 for Teachers July 9-14 at Grand Isle Research Lab April 13, 2017 - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold WETSHOP 2017, a coastal awareness workshop for science, history and social studies teachers, July 9-14 at the LDWF Grand Isle Research Lab. The focus of this six-day workshop will be to provide teachers with an in-depth look at issues related to wetland ecology and coastal land loss in Louisiana. Participating teachers will accrue 55 hours of instruction covering a wide variety of topics, including wetland ecology, fisheries management and coastal restoration. Teachers will also spend a portion of each day in the field learning about maritime forests, barrier island beach ecology, coastal restoration projects, bird life, marsh and swamp habitats and marine organisms.

This year, participants will visit one of the largest coastal restoration projects in the world.

Ornamental pepper plants have been increasing with popularity over the last several years. This definitely makes since in South Louisiana where the pepper plant has been infused with local culture for hundreds of years. Researchers currently agree that the pepper plant originated from Mexico and other areas in Western Central America. This offers a little explanation on why they are seen almost everywhere in here in South Louisiana: because they can take the heat!

Most people think of peppers when growing a vegetable garden but not the case anymore.

Peppers are now being grown for their fruit color, fruit size, and foliage color. They handle the heat like their vegetable counterparts but instead of providing us with food they give us good color and contrast to help add some color to late season flower beds and to add some spice to combination containers. Ornamental peppers will thrive in areas that are well-drained and receive full sunlight. ‘Purple Flash’ produces gorgeous variegated foliage in shades of purple. The ‘Chilly Chilli’ pepper produces 2-4” inch fruit in shades of yellow, green, orange and red. Another popular variety is ‘Black Pearl’. It produces black foliage and a black fruit that turns red when ripe. All are available at local garden centers and plant retailers. See which one looks the best in your landscape!

All participating teachers will receive standards based correlated wetland lessons and many other educational resources from numerous sponsoring agencies and organizations.

Lodging and meals are provided once participants reach the workshop site. Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will receive a $250 stipend. An additional stipend is available during the Academic Year (AY) upon completion of a wetland stewardship project.

Tomato Fruitworm What do the cotton bollworm, corn earworm, and tomato fruitworm all have in common? They are all one in the same. It just depends on what they decide on eating. Helicoverpa zea has been causing both farmers and backyard vegetable growers problems for years. The destructive pest will feed on the pods of tomato, corn, and cotton. In cotton in will greatly reduce yields by destroyed the bud before fiber development begins. In both corn and tomato, they cause severe blemishes that render the fruit to be unusable.

The adult moth of this pest is small, about ½-1 inch in size, and is very bland in appearance.

They make up for appearance in their excellent flying abilities which gives them the ability to spread rather quickly. The caterpillars measure almost 2 inches long when fully grown and may come in several different colors including green, brown, pink, and yellow. In tomato, the immature caterpillar will tunnel its way into the fruit where it feeds on the developing tissue. In corn, the caterpillar feeds on developing corn kernels near the tassel end of the cob.

Control can be tricky with this pest because of the nature of how it feeds on the inside of fruits.

The first thing to consider is destroying any infected fruit before the insect can complete its life cycle, especially on tomato. Some people have found some success in killing young caterpillars on tomatoes with a dusting of diatomaceous earth. The biological pesticide Bt is labeled to kill the caterpillars and can be successful when applied properly. For chemical control, you can use carbaryl. Gov. Edwards Announces Management Pilot Program to Provide More Access to Red Snapper in State, Federal Waters May 25, 2017 - Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Thursday (May 25) that the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) plans to conduct an innovative pilot program designed to help recreational anglers battling short seasons for red snapper in federal waters.

The two-year pilot program will incorporate the use of handheld technology to produce realtime data on what anglers are catching. Additionally, anglers won’t have to fish their limit during a particular season. They will be able chose what days are best for them to go fishing.

Edwards, who has consistently supported state management of Gulf waters, said, “I asked Wildlife and Fisheries to develop a program that could eventually lead to Louisiana controlling red snapper fishing, even in what is determined to be federal waters. This pilot program could not come soon enough as the federal government has limited anglers to just three days to fish red snapper this year.”

LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said, “Just like the governor, we have heard from anglers across Louisiana and it is clear what they want most is the flexibility to fish for red snapper when it makes sense for them and their families. So we are going to test a new way of doing this. Instead of using a season, we are going to try giving fishermen a set number of red snapper that they can catch in federal waters and ask them to record that data on their smartphone.”

The pilot program – to be in operation in 2018-2019 - is the linchpin of LDWF’s Exempted Fishing Permit Application for State Management Pilot Project (or EFP). It has been delivered to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is expected to be deliberated by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council at its next meeting in June.

Here’s how the EFP program will work. There will be 150 study participants selected by random drawing and subsequently contacted by e-mail. They will have the choice of accepting or refusing to participate. If that angler declines, then another one will be chosen at random.

The participants would be able to catch 25,000 pounds of red snapper per year. The anglers would have to abide by the federal size limit. The EFP program would have no daily bag limit and the total limit per EFP participant would be determined by the number of fish allocated to each participant.

What this program is attempting is several fold, Montoucet said. “We are trying to show we can scientifically monitor the red snapper caught in the federal waters, provide anglers with more days of access to the fish and allow them to make larger catches. And most importantly, the state wants to show that we can use state-of-the-art-technology to safely control the red snapper population on our own.”

Participants in the pilot program will be recording the fish they catch and throw back on their smart phone and with that real-time data. Using that information, LDWF will ask the federal government to increase the amount fish allotted to private anglers in the future.

Get Hooked During Free Fishing Weekend in Louisiana The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries invites you to take part in its annual Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11. Louisiana’s Free Fishing Weekend is an opportunity for Louisiana residents and visitors alike to fish Louisiana waters without an otherwise required fishing license. So, leave your cash and credit card at home – the only thing you’ll need for a great time is your lure and line.

“Each year, we designate a weekend of free fishing as an incentive for families and friends to get outside and enjoy our beautiful Sportsman’s Paradise,” explained Secretary Jack Montoucet. “Whether your interest is saltwater or fresh, Louisiana offers some of the best and most diverse fishing opportunities in the world, and we welcome you to become part of the long-standing tradition of Louisiana fishing.

“As a fisherman myself,” Edwards said, “that sounds like a lot better system than squeezing all of my red snapper fishing into June when there might be bad weather or when family obligations can get in the way.”

While a fishing license is not required, all fishing regulations, including size, season, catch limits and gear restrictions will remain in effect.

With the exception of free fishing weekend, anglers 16 and older must possess a Louisiana fishing license when fishing in any Louisiana public waters. Louisianians who decide to continue fishing the remainder of the year are invited to purchase a state fishing license at https://www.la.wildlifelicense.com/start.php.

Our charges will be as follows: $20 for the first 60 words, 25 cents per word additional. Pictures in a one column by 2” setting are $25 each and can be in color.

Additional graphics (logos, insignia, crosses, etc.) in the body of the obituary are $15 each and need to be provided by the person sending the obituary. All pictures and graphics need to be of print quality and mailed material will be returned if sent with a selfaddressed, stamped return envelope.
