TIGER LAIR TO BE RESTRICTED

As this story is being written, I am not sure of my status for the opening game of the LSU football season. Will I be in the press box for the first time ever for an SEC league game, a possibility never offered before the onslaught of Covid-19 and the disappearing footprint of so-called mainstream print media sources? Or will I watch it at home, having opted out of my season tickets for 2020 like three-quarters of the ticket holders who normally inhabit Tiger Stadium during 7 to 8 fall afternoons and evenings.

If I go to the games, I am encouraged to access the press box from outside the elevators which means I’ll be taking several flights of stairs, hopefully close to the elevators.

But if it’s anything like the non-elevator access to the Superdome press box, it will be a Peloton workout for this old man. We are also told we will not be able to “roam” the press area. And all food and drink will be pre-packaged and served at specific times. I can hardly wait to hear the restroom restrictions. We cannot cheer or be loud in the press box and I have always supported that professional standard. This labor of love will call for a stronger sense of commitment in 2020.

I will be curious to see what steps the team takes towards meeting the intense social and political pressures being brought by Black Lives Matter and other groups. My agreement on protesting is like my philosophy on other controversial subjects: do it freely and strongly, but do it up to a point where your protest comes just short of my nose. To me, that means protests take place in the open public marketplace, not in a venue where folks gather on their own nickel to conduct meetings and entertainment. As a child of the 50’s and Californian of the ’60’s, I saw firsthand how protests could enact change without destroying society. My view is when destruction overcomes non-physical protests and discussions, it ceases to be protest and becomes something more dangerous. America has made its share of mistakes but those have been recognized and corrected to a certain degree in most cases. The work continues but it has to be done in the context of keeping this country retaining the goodness that has made it the beacon of the world’s oppressed.

It will also be an eye-opener to see the reaction of the Nanny State as the Big Ten has now reversed itself on football and will play an eight-game, all-league schedule beginning in October. After all, the Nanny State can dis the deplorables in the South all they want; they’ll play havoc trying to do it with a bunch of upper Midwest and Ohio Valley people who are considered almost equals among the effete elite of the Northeast wine and brie belt. And that translates into political backlash as a country tired of trying to sort out the veracity of masking and closures is beginning to reach a tipping point. This isn’t World War II, when our leaders had a clear goal and truthfully advanced our progress towards that goal with clear, unambiguous reports tied into personal sacrifice that lasted years in some cases. That’s not the issue today with many aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic and so its sacrifices are thereby viewed with a more suspicious eye.

Throw a record hurricane season and the recent death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg into the mix and you have an election year that no one will ever want to see again. When it’s sorted out, we’ll see how the skeletal strength of our constitutional Republic handles the strident and radical demands of extremists and Marxists of all ilks. I recently finished reading Das Capital and if you think the shopping channels are boring, you’ve never been treated to this analysis of the only revolutionary volume ever produced by the displaced German racist known as Karl Marx.

Speaking of the “r” word, what ever happened to “Eracism?” Founded by Louis Gossett Jr., similar in support from the Left Coast and East Coast politicians to current BLM doctrine, it seemed to have just faded away. The tool was there; maybe the founders didn’t sell it hard enough. But high pressure sales efforts have been losing favor and have been dying away in the past 40 years; that type of pressure never has the advantage of sustainability.

Just as I don’t want to see my Tiger Lair restricted, I don’t want to see the American Dream shattered by those who view destruction as the new construction. As the pigskin season progresses, I pray the pigheaded voices in this country realize that when you throw the Republic baby out with the bathwater of personal freedom, discourse and rule of representative law, any other type of governmental baby taking its place will not survive in the garden of democracy, no matter how fouled some of the soil may have become. Words to GREAUX by DEAD BRANCHES IN SHADE TREES It is quite common to notice a dead branch in the canopy’s of landscape trees during the late summer months. The second half of a long growing season takes its toll on many of our landscape plants, especially trees.

Because of their large size, trees are considered the “tough guys” in the landscape, but they too can struggle with environmental stresses. There is no one single explanation for a dead branch in the canopy of a tree.

Will Afton Let’s look at a few causes to understand why our landscape trees might develop a dead branch and how to manage it.

The Black Twig Borer (Xylosandrus spp.) is a small beetle with an affinity for your shade trees.

These beetles are so small that they typically go unnoticed until they cause a section of tree branch to turn brown. If you can follow the branch down to where green foliage is present, you will notice hole smaller than 1mm. This is the entry hole for a female Black Twig Borer. Once inside the stem she burrows out a cavity and lays eggs. The young beetles use the hollowed out cavity until they emerge as adults where this process can be repeated. The best way to manage this problem is to apply good tree care practices that encourage tree health and vigor.

Remove dead branches by pruning 3 to 4 inches below the beetle entrance hole. Insecticides may help but they need to be applied early in the year before beetles enter the tree. Permethrin and bifenthrin are labeled for such use on landscape plants. Be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticide.

Lightning strikes can cause dead branches in trees if they don’t bring the tree down entirely.

Each lightning strike produces an electrical charge of 100 million volts and can reach temperatures greater than 50,000°F. When only a small section of a tree’s canopy is damaged from lightning, there is a good chance that the tree will be able to recover. Provide irrigation water and fertilizer to help reduce stress. Corrective pruning should be done to remove damaged wood and to help accelerate recovery. Consult with a certified arborist when it comes to doing work on landscape trees. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry can help with finding a certified arborist.

Wildlife, particularly squirrels, can create problems in landscape trees. When food is scarce squirrels will feed on tree roots, twigs, buds, and inner bark of small limbs. The resulting damage appears as dead branches in the canopy. Open wounds in trees can be entryways for pathogens and lead to more compounding problems later on. Managing squirrels and other wildlife can be tricky. There are several methods available including trapping, use of repellants, birds of prey decoys, and the use of physical barriers like aluminum flashing wrapped around the base of a tree. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) publishes a nuisance wildlife control operator list that can be accessed on their website. It provides a listing of individuals who are licensed by LDWF to control nuisance wildlife. The website can be found at www.wlf. louisiana.gov.

Root zone stress is one of the more popular ways to cause issues in tree limbs and branches.

Its common in new construction but it can affect any landscape tree. Changes in surface drainage and root zone compaction along with physical and mechanical damage by humans are some of the leading ways to cause stress on mature landscape trees. When tree roots become unproductive, the flow of water from the root system to the canopy becomes disrupted.

Portions of the canopy will stop receiving water. Typically, symptoms of root zone stressed trees include leaf dieback at the tips of branches (furthest point from the root system), delayed leaf emergence, whole branch failure, and eventual tree decline. Older trees that have accumulated stress over a longer period do not recover overnight. It is a gradual response to beneficial soil conditions that help these trees recover. Start by not digging in the root zone of a tree and refrain from cutting roots within 10-15 feet of the tree in question. Prune out dead limbs when possible. Passively alleviate soil compaction by providing a layer of organic mulch over the root zone. The organic layer of the forest floor provides habitat for many organisms that live their life in the soil. They help to aerate the soil by digging, burrowing, and feeding. You can create a forest floor for your shade trees by using mulch. Cover the soil with 3-4 inches of any organic mulch product. Fallen leaves from the tree in question make an excellent resource for this purpose. Pull the mulch back 6 inches from the trunk of the tree to allow for air flow at the crown level. These suggestions won’t turn things around overnight, but they will help to reduce stress over time which benefits long-lived plants like trees in our landscapes.
